After finding out on Monday I had 4 hernias, I went into surgery and must do nothing for 3 days now. What else to do but learn from a master before I go back to my workshop. I’m gagging to get back after watching Phil. I love the pig. 👍🏻

On the outside, two holes make the pig's eyes but on the inside those holes and the grain in between make a nice smile!! It is beautiful, wonderful work!! Happy birthday to your daughter! 🙂👍💖

An aromatic piggy, how apt! And what a beautiful piggy it is. The colors are so rich and I love the patterns they make. Shenanigans is a great place to get up to on your birthday! I hope your daughter has a wonderful time. I've meant to tell you that I grew up in Des Moines, Washington, not too terribly far from where you are, went to Mt. Rainier HS in the early 70's. A favorite destination with friends was Lake Tapps. Of course the world was pretty different back then. I haven't been back to the old stomping grounds for at least 20 years.
Take care, and thank you for sharing this beautiful bowl!

Phil, you have definitely NOT lost your touch. This a great piece of woodturning on a lovely piece of Red Cedar as it turned out. I am so glad that there was some decent sap wood as you got down into it because it produced some wonderful contrast to the well known red colouring of the cedar. I also think the 'pig' is quite adorable. I still love the way you virtually hold a 'quiet conversation' with each piece of wood you turn, almost as though you are 'seeking guidance from the piece of wood as to how it wants to have its inner beauty displayed', as you say, "for all to see". Thank you for sharing this my friend. Stay safe & well & keep sharing your brilliant talent with ALL your viewers. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

Borer bees! Or carpenter bees are what made that hole. They are common around here and the bore into wood along the grain to nest. Even pressure treated. Beautiful bowl Phil. That was a bonus peice I sent and I'm glad you put your personal touch on it. Turned out really great. That peice was from my front yard and had been cut for about 6 years. I have a great deal of cedar already cut here so if you would like more, sat the word. I'm sorry I shortened your gouge. Happy birthday to Stephanie at half century!

This is my first time watching your channel, and I really enjoyed it. What I love the most about this piece, is how much effort you put in to preserve the unique deformities, problems, and damage done to the piece of wood before turning it. The fact that you both respect and love how these differences, these non-conforming aspects of the wood is what makes the piece both unique and beautiful. And you did all you could bring it out that uniqueness and to preserve it. That’s what a true artist does. You do have an artist’s eye and I wanted to say, as a fellow artist, how much I appreciate it and I absolutely love that bowl.

I'm glad it sanded up as nicely as it did for you Phil. Given how quickly it would dull your tools, and I saw how quickly it happened, I'm a bit surprised how easily it surrendered to the sanding paper.

It looks like a challenge to turn, and a bugger with all of the silica to keep a (dull) edge on your gouges. I've said this before: we use silica to sharpen our tools, and silica dulls our tools. How does it know what to do, and when? 🙂 Nice finished product, Phil! I'll bet your shop is aromatic now, too.
