  • Black walnut is a great wood to turn. It turns well and is beautiful. A few cracks along the way are taken care of with Standbond CA glue.

    Hey Peggy! Absolutely please keep showing your progress by stopping and starting! I don’t understand other channels that hardly ever stop or never stop, why they think it’s interesting to watch somebody generating a huge pile of wood shavings is beyond me…

    I think this is one of my pet hates when turning a solid piece of wood, the amount of wood which is wasted ... but that's part of the price to get the piece you want out of the wood you have!
    Some pretty serious cracks there, but what a beautiful bowl it turned out to be .... oooh, love those cutting boards, the wood and colours of the resin are fantastic .... PLEASE show us the process of making them👍

    I enjoy each video you do thank you.. I been turning for 56 years and I go around and find folks cutting a tree on their property.. I find all kinds of green wood.. I never like turning dry firewood or drift wood.. But for years I have use watering troughs and old washtubs to soak my greenwood in.. some I have kept for two years before I got around to turning them..I have soaked live oak, walnut, maple, mesquite, you name it.. But at least if I get a crack it’s because it was drying after I turned it the first time..I like paste wax and shrink wrap these days to slow drying and keep weighing them so I know when to put them in the attic.. The attic soars to 140 degrees here in the summer and very seldom get a bowl that’s been turn once to crack.. Fruit woods are the hardest to keep from cracking.. I hope you try to keep your wood wet till turning.. I don’t buy much wood unless it’s part of a resin type bowl. Have fun and keep going. You are fun to watch..

    Good to see another video. I have lots of walnut blanks and they have all cracked. Even after cuting the wood in the field, sealing with anchorseal, then rough turning to 1 in thick and reseal immediatley they crack. Mahoney who sells the walnut oil , uses tons of walnut and has no cracks . Just not sure what I am doing wrong. Keep up the good work and make a video making your boards!

  • @SpunbyGreenJeans
    @SpunbyGreenJeans ปีที่แล้ว

    Peggy, I have the One way coring system. I have cored out dry ash blanks and it cut those well. Cuts real nice on wet wood. Only thing is the cored blanks get cut the way the knives are shaped. You can't change that shape. If you leave extra thickness, you can then shape the way you want.

    Walnut makes a beautiful bowl! I especially like the use of dark brown Starbond instead of black for crack repair. In my opinion it blends with the wood much better. It seems like “everybody” who turns and repairs cracks just grabs the black. Not always the best choice, I think.

    Re bowlsaver, I have the woodcut system #4 I believe. It’s is great, but bowlsaver work best when the wood is still a bit wet. I have cored dry ash, but it is very slow, tedious and a bit dangerous. I have also used Oneway, the older system that did not have tailstock support, and did not like it at all.
