All these companies will regret discontinuing their budget cars when the economy takes a dive. People will stop buying these $45k+ SUVs unless there are DEEP incentives. Nissan should just go out of business already.
Budget SUVs exist though. Chevy Trax is like 20k.
Sure but the smallest SUVs from the American brands are the biggest pieces of junk in the road. Ecosport, trak, renegade, etc barely make it through their warranty period before they break. People are going to need affordable, reliable and less complex cars once the country takes a nose dive.
These companies are in for a world of pain.. 70k for trucks.. 38k for sedans .. 35k- infinite for SUVs. Sitting in lots for more than 200 days a year now. Deep discounts are gonna be needed at the cost of massive layoffs.
Nobody will care if Nissan goes out of business
It's also annoying when base models of the various affordable cars get dropped. It shouldn't be hard to buy a Civic LX, and they should bring back a DX trim. The Corolla LE better never go away either.
Wal-Mart parking lots will look SO different without tons of Altimas!! (with various body damage, broken taillights, etc). 🤷🏼♂️🤔
I don't notice damaged Altima's more than any other car in Walmart or other retail shopping parking lots.
That won't take effect for a couple of years though because all those cars at Walmart-Mart have 150,000+ miles.
@@ivanlowjones I don't think I've ever seen an Altima that didn't have major body damage or mismatched panels.
@Enthusiastlist you looking at all the old atlimas 😂 ... i see plenty of new ones with no damage
Teslas are the new Altima’s
How perfect would it be to see Matt in a dark green GR86? Great combo of past cars!
As manufacturers get rid of coupes, they also get rid of my interest in ever purchasing a product from them. I loved nissan altimas until they deleted their coupe. I liked the elantra coupe. The genesis coupe. The kia forte koup. The G35/37. The Cobalt coupe.... on and on. I don't have kids and don't need four doors or a big suv. I'm 39 and free. EVs and carbon credits are the death of car culture in the US. I'm lucky enough to have lived through the original fun coupes, like the eclipse gsx, supras, 240/270 and 300zs... firebirds, thunderbirds, TAs, vipers... I guess I've lived too long.
Church. Coupes are the shit.
I'm with you except for the EV comments. If anything EVs are the way that coupes could be brought back. The problem is car makers have pushed consumers into thinking they want SUVs because it allowed them to get away with producing crappier fuel economy vehicles via the loopholes that were added into the law by lobbyists. The end of enthusiast car culture started a long time before EV's were a thing.
@@falxonPSN Even if less stringent standards were the reason manufacturers pushed SUVs, we can clearly see consumers love the idea, and why would consumers change their mind when it comes to EV? Again, people were fine with SUV fuel consumption, so why would they care if an ESUV is less energy efficient than an E-sedan?
Fun fact: because Euro 7 would have meant the new M5 would have less power than the predecesor and BMW didn't want to have their flagship with 500-something horsepower go against the plug-in hybrid E-Class and A6 with over 700 horsepower they decided to go with the hybrid.
If they drop the Versa, they need to bring back the manual for the Sentra and they should do a Sentra hatch.
Subaru is trolling us with that wing lol...
I heard that the 2025 GR 86 has made an improvement to the automatic transmission that will let the driver downshift closer to the redline or allow the revs to go higher than the 2024.
If the Hybrid CX-50 is a RAV4 Prime with Mazda's suspension and driving tuning, then I think it's a compelling vehicle.
It’s actually a regular RAV4 hybrid with a Mazda shell, not a Prime.
Don't worry, it'll start at 60k 😅
A coworker's neice was killed doing 115 in an Altima recently....the stereotype is real....I see so many of them smashed up.
Ive said Ford made the wrong move abandoning sedans and small hatches since 2018! When they made the decision. It gives me great pleasure to say "I told you so" now 😂
great video, Matt! love the golden hour lighting… i see what ya did there. looks great. Love the auto news updates and rumors
I was already a member! But my credit card got stolen so I re subscribed
Wish that Toyota would bring the Yaris SE hatch back to the USA. Same with Mazda & the Mazda2. I've always preferred smaller, practical-but-fun cars in a decent, sporty trim level.
Subcompact car is dead in the US once Versa and Mirage are dead by next year and the Crown is just there to keep the large sedan from dying out completely

Always enjoy the weekly updates!
Throttle response for rev matching is most benefited by a lighter flywheel. While a non-linear throttle map or an ECU identifier to "see" a blip while the clutch is depressed and force a hard rev can help, a low rotating mass is the biggest benefit for revs, shifting, and heel-toe. The only counter you really need is just a slightly higher idle rpm to keep the engine rotating energy similar to a traditionally heavier flywheel. I hope they're not just making a more non-linear map.
What are you yapping about. Flexing that mechanical engineering skills?
@@drippgxd so are you just commenting to everyone with trolling remarks or what? Slow Friday for you?
I actually don't have a problem blipping heel and toe (current BRZ) but interesting update either way.
@@MKu64 They heel-toe just fine. It's just a low rotating mass makes it a good bit better. It's mostly a time problem, aka how long you have to hold down the throttle pedal to get the revs up. I've you're barreling into a tight 180 and need to bake in rev time into your actions, it's kind of annoying. The difference is a quick stab versus push and hold for a second or so until the rpms fiiiiinaly get up there.
@@Xmvw2X Yes I understand of course - was just saying that currently I don't really find it an issue - but it doesn't mean I would be against an improvement for sure. Pity I would need to buy a new car to experience it though 😂
Great update as always. Thanks Matt!
I'd actually love to see a LESS responsive and more linear throttle map like the BRZ has. The tip in is too aggressive and makes smooth throttle application more difficult than it should be on track.
Another banger Matt!
It’s about time you got this video out, I was worried sick! I thought maybe something happened! I had to take some anti-anxiety medicine!😂🚗
What the sigma 💀
Great video as always
0:40 if only we could get that color combo on the Miata
Great update
24:13 I never thought I’d hear Matt say Grand Admiral Thrawn!🤣🤣👏🏻 Great video as always Matt, thank you for the updates!🙌🏻
Woooooo! Another great video
I own a 24 GR86 and rev match downshifting is a piece of cake on this car without any throttle map changes.
The Ford Capri is interesting as that interior is pretty nice, hopefully this makes its way into some of the other Ford SUVs.
GM trim/package changes are a joke 😂😂 who at the marketing department decided that
GR 86 is fun car, can't wait till the MR2 and celica
The Capri was a sporty coupe. Now another SUV. Hate that. At least it is not Chinese.
I'm surprised Nissan didn't give up on sedans sooner. Their SUVs/pickups and sports cars are good, for the price, and they are pretty easy to work on. They must still have some contracts in play that's forcing them to keep making sedans. They just need to drop the CVT for a few years in their CUVs, or go to a full hybrid sun gear set like the old Chevy Volt had and a lot of the new JDM hybrid systems are using. There's no need to change the Z much for the price, the updated Z34 chassis is solid and the aftermarket is pretty ripe to modify/upgrade it however you like since a lot of the Q60 and 370Z parts transfer over (oil pump, diff, cooling, subframe bushings), unless they are going to start making it lighter, that would be pretty awesome.
A real hshift track Z with solid subframe bushings would be nice also, call it the R-Spec or something! What a lot of sports cars makers are discovering is for pure ICE sports cars it's all about the natural driving feel and connectedness, not lap times any more because real car people want a relationship with their car and to build it over time with the parts they want, and soulless BEVs are setting the new lap records anyway. If I want to go fast and not shift, I have an EV commuting appliance, if I want to be connected to a vehicle with a soul, I drive my old G35 track day car I've put many years of work into, tore it down and rebuilt (wow just dawned on me it's 20 years old and still a blast to drive!). I do want more power so I'll probably get the new Z in a year or so and start the build process over again.
Let's hope the GR86 and BRZ got a better oil pan...
The new accord is ugly and slow I’ll pick the Altima with the turbo any day. Plus it’s not ugly
I did not want an Altima as a rental last year. I got one anyway. It turned out to be smooth, good handling, useable acceleration and it was lower to the ground. In general, i was impressed.
Those remaining sedans won't pick up sales. Compact crossovers will.
Certainly a lot of news stories from opposite ends of the spectrum this week. I'm looking forward to hearing more about that wild Red Bull RB17! 😎😁
If CX50 uses Toyota hybrid and Subaru also uses Toyota hybrid, then…we have 3 cars that have exactly the same hybrid system.
Matt.....any news on the 2025 nissan pathfinder? Infiniti qx60? Will it be a carry over with v6?. I hope sooo
I’m wondering why Subaru isn’t doing any special editions for their brz? They did do em for the 1st gen…
Porsche is the only car company that seems to increase the value of their previous models with each subsequent generation.
They repeatedly rank among the top manufacturers for "Vehicles with the least depreciation". Seems like every time we get close to acquiring a new Porsche (either 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 or 911 Carrera T (992) in Shark Blue), they [Porsche] decide it is time for a change.
The latter of which is important because Porsche has stopped offering the Shark Blue paint code which was the closest thing you could get to a Paint-To-Sample color. Now PTS is only available on their GT and Specialty models.
I swear, being a Porschephile is a rabbit hole in itself.
Nevertheless, I *_always_* appreciate these Weekly Updates, Matt. Thank you for your continual dedication to the channel. I look forward to the video covering your trip to Maranello, Italy. What an honor!
Stay classy my friend.
The way companies are doing packages and trims these days makes no sense and is also often more expensive. The weird naming for Chevy, Ford and how the revamped the 2024+ F150 packages. I own a 2016 F150 and the way the new packages and trims are made it astronomically more expensive from 2023 to 2024 when I was spec'ing one out online. As if prices and interest rates aren't high enough let's make it more expensive to option things the way you want it. I used to own a few civic Si's and a 2020 wrx performance package, strongly considering a new premium trim wrx. They're selling near me for 32-35k and a few dealers have low interest rates.
The cx50 white on red with that power train will be a great vehicle. Nice job Mazda.
CX-50 Hybrid might start to take away Outback sales...their silhouettes are actually very similar in terms of both looking ALMOST like wagons and not SUVs. I would consider moving over to a hybrid CX-50 when I pay off my Outback.
For those wondering, the "Audi A5 family" will consist of the A5 Sportback (sedan/coupe-styled hatchback) and the A5 Avant (wagon). There will be no 2-door variants (at least not at the onset) nor will there be a traditional sedan like the A4 (rumor is China may get an exclusive sedan body style but this is yet to be seen in testing). That means the sedan, coupe, cabriolet, and allroad (wagon with plastic cladding and a lift) are all discontinued. The RS5 will be a PHEV with the same engine from last gen, in both Avant and Sportback forms, and the S5 will be a 48V mild-hybrid with a very small power bump on a new version of the previous gen petrol 3.0T. Unfortunately it is not known for sure if the Avant variants will be coming to the US, but I am personally somewhat optimistic.
Love the hakone edition GR86 looks so good!
How is Nissan still in business with all these poor business decisions.
so is this like the brz ts treatment?
Loving the Hakone edition! Throw on some bronze TE37s and you're good to go. With the Altima likely to get more expensive as an EV it looks like we'll be embracing Big Sentra energy going forward.
In Further News...Audi announces that, in addition to discontinuing coupes and convertibles, they are also discontinuing turn signals and low beams. "Our customers don't buy them or use them, so F*** everybody else".
BMW drivers are the ones that don't know how to use turn signals. 😉
Porsche wants that mercedes treatment, and they'll get it
A few classic example of Chevy doing a emergency redesign or refresh within a year.
1.) 2013 to 2014 Chevy Malibu. It seems a larger front grille, new bumper , and more rear seat leg room. (How I have no idea… but that’s engineering magic).
2.) the Camaro front end
3.) the equinox EV.
Mazda’s 2.5L is so superior to toyotas, i feel. I guess no hybrid yet. Mazda 6 2.5 hybrid all japan mazda made would be nice
Build upon this effort and up the n/an engine again to a 3.0 liter
Ill pick up the equinox EV off a lease in a few years... too expensive for what it is for now.
I had missed that the cx-70 was baking amazon alexa into it, and now in the cx-50 hybrid.. ridiculous nonsense.
Does anyone think the Capri looks like it belongs on the movie Despicable Me? 😂😂
dropping the gas 718 will bite them bad unless theyvare gonna bring back the gas version with a new name
The worst thing about Cayman/Boxster going full EV is: what are the chances they'll add simulated manual-shifted transmission and engine sounds in there? I bet Porsche is in the same place Jason Camissa was BEFORE he tried the new Kia EV N model: "simulated shifts in an EV? What for?? It's totally pointless! it's anti-progress!"
Wunderbar! Another Episode of the Matt Maran Friday Night Car News Show - with a big list of topics again. Wishing every Viewer here a great day and a fantastic weekend, Enjoy the News!
YEE
How much of discontinuing the Altima has to do with all the memes? 😂
They underestimate the backlash using the Capri name to phone in another electric SUV. Pathetic😡
Mercedes would be foolish not to be pushing out as many variations of the c class coupe as possible given that fantastic profit margin
Redbull car is a bit pointless. I have some money (not that yet) but what the fuck for not being street legal?
I would love a small displacement V6 Maxima 6 speed auto. Put it in the mid size category. It amazes me how Nissan chooses to work against itself and build junk.
I agree!
Nissan should of put an automatic in the maxima and altima!
Sales would be better I think!
Even sentra!!
Maxima needs to go back to it's roots, and have a rwd drivetrain.
I pour one out for each sub-$30k car that keeps getting discontinued. I refuse to believe people aren't buying them. If they aren't, they should. Choosing a $40k vehicle when your budget wants a $25k vehicle is a bad form of chosen bankruptcy that will follow you for many years. There's nothing wrong with driving a hatchback or sedan instead of a ubiquitous SUV/pickup truck.
Can people just buy a used car? Why do you pretend that used cars don’t exist? For example I couldn’t buy a new Chevy suburban because those start at $60k but guess what? I could buy a 2010 or 2015 suburban for like less then $20k!
@@drippgxd assuming someone wants a 15 year old car that will most likely have problems or rusting apart.
@@drippgxd some people want an affordable NEW car. There's LOTS of reasons you'd want that. Maybe I want to spend $25k on a car that I know will go 10+ years without a repair. That's not possible used. A 2015 Suburban isn't going to guarantee you a decade of perfect service. Used cars are not a solution to everything. And if $25k new cars exist, that leads to more sub-$20k and sub-$10k used cars also existing.
This is one of the reasons so many countries are worried about cheap Chinese BEVs and EREVs flooding their market, they will shut down their native auto industry's push to put more customers in vehicles they can barely afford. I mean what are loans out to now, eight years in some cases? Now they are talking about subscription services if you even want to use the vehicle's infotainment that you paid for. I didn't feel like it at the time but I'm one of the lucky ones who's dad made me go out and help with working on the cars. Those lessons saved me thousands over the years, included being comfortable with used cars as my commuters.
But yeah totally agreed, if certain car manufacturers don't want to sell affordable cars because the margins are "too thin", then let others import them for folks to buy.
@@drippgxdboy everybody not into that use bullshit you named 😂😂 ppl want affordable new and a warranty... all those used up under serviced ass cars and trucks ... they lie about the car facts ,damn thing had 3 or 4 owners that didn't do shit to the car 😂😂😂
I can’t wait to see how badly the Macan sales plummet when it’s only an EV
Also, the model 3 got a new trim that’s costs 35K after tax credit.
Nice!
Porsche needs to be humbled
The end of BAE? Oh no... Anyways
Mercedes needs to chill with the GT's. The GT43 is anywhere from 98k-120k for 369 Horsepower! What garbage, lmao.
Not enough baby mommas buying Altimas. Fortunately, an Altima EV already exists and it's called the Tesla Model 3.
GM Logic: overly verbose trim packages = more better
You praise ev vehicles. Do you have one yet?
He owns a mustang mach e
🙂👍
Porsche is killing itself. I'll never buy an electric car. And I'm not the only one.
Wondering if they still will make one more year of trueno edition 2025
That EV slowdown is not what people think it is. I think that Porsche knows this. EV sales are steadily increasing even though its not explosive like it was in the beginning. Affordable EVs are slowly coming into play as battery prices fall and sales are reigniting as a result.
Give us an RS5 Avant please
Audi please bring back the TTrs
Nope never ever gonna happen. You could still buy one used though
A TTRS cabriolet with a manual. I would instantly buy. Audi is losing a sale here and I know many people who would also buy this.
Porsche is in the business of selling cars, so their success is necessarily defined by sales. Not sure who they’re fooling by suggesting they’re measuring success some way other than sales.
Welp, discontinuing the gas 718 is supported by its sales, very nearly their lowest selling vehicle and likely the one with the worst margins, which probably poaches more profitable 911 sales anyway.
@@thatoneotherotherguy it’s almost like people don’t want a crappy Subaru engine in their 100k sports car
@@Accost2u The 4.0L exists (but it's a flat six, also a thing Subaru made until five years ago), but it's not enough to save the lineup. To be pedantic, the Cayman starts at $73k. Virtual zero base Caymans without options are sold though lol
@@thatoneotherotherguy yea true, I think Porsche let the ship sail on the boxster / cayman a while ago and the 6 cylinder cars were just a consolation prize. And you’re right, finding a base or even ‘S’ model sub 90k is essentially impossible but they also increased the base price by over 10k since 2020 without changing a thing.
porsche is in for a reckoning - nobody is ready for a full electric transition. They needed to go to hybrid. Period.
Although the rich buy Porsche and they can all charge at home.
Porsche isn't on track for a lineup-wide "full electric transition" anytime soon. The gasoline Cayenne and 911 have long futures ahead of them. The 718 (which is one of their lowest sellers and probably poaches some 911 sales) and the Macan going electric is not going to harm their bottom line. They're getting to a pretty impressive point in their tech. The Macan EV has good specs and is going to print them money. Their clientele is basically exclusively people who can easily home charge.
Broke Nick
@@davidmccarthy6061do the rich people also buy a used Porsche too? Excluding the older 911s and I’m talking about cayenne/boxster?
Many of these German companies were virtue signaling or trying to please regulators who probably want people to just not drive at all. There are people who hate the German people who are running the show.
Porsche sucks
In Further News...Nissan announces they're leaving the the North American market. "We know the cars sell themselves, and our buyers would otherwise be at a Buy Here Pay Here used car lot, but we're idiots, so we're just going to leave and continue to hide under a rock".
