- Finally, we are doing Kia Optima verses Hyundai Sonata comparison review! Maybe wanted me to compare the all new Kia Optima against the all new Hyundai Sonata. Actually the Hyundai Sonata is a rental car, because it was nearly impossible to find a date to get both of them as press cars. So, comparison review coming right up!

Both are not Elegant but Sporty in My Opinion
But Older Sonata are deserved to be called Elegant
That's because this is base Hyundai. Sonata Ultimate looks more sporty than loaded Optima
Caddilac Wong certainly. Sonata caused my breakfast to come out the same hole it came into me but this time a lot faster. Kia looks more like dogshit - so something without even gram of taste. Why Koreans simply do not copy germans. Take passat B8 or Audi A4 and make a copy of it. Take everything: design, engines, DSG, infotainment, systems, handling, and maybe some day sales too. But for now? Thanks, no.

I don't like the odd ugly looking front end of the Sonata. It looks like a return to old school. Otherwise, pretty nice. I like the back on the Sonata better than the Optima. I like the Optima better overall. I guess I like it much better than the Sonata. In 2015 model year version the Sonata was the best then.

It’s the Optima hands down! Better in every category. We already see the new Sonatas here in the US. I think they look cumbersome and almost freakish. For me, I like the looks of the outgoing models more than the new designs.

Easily the Optima, though this isn’t an apples to apples trim comparison.
When it gets here to the U.S. it will eventually offer 2.5 liter turbo and all-wheel drive. KIA did a great job on the front design. It looks more luxurious and engineered. In fact that body color on the Optima looks very sharp.

Favoring the K5/Optima overall. Its styling looks more aggressive next to the Sonata and from the side it kinda gives me baby Kia Stinger vibes. That extra sound dampening probably makes the Optima feel more like a luxury car, even though the Hyundai looks more the part.
Now I just have to wait for the Optima to come out in the US.

Yes, the all new Kia Optima handles pretty nicely, but like i said, i just like Hyundai Sonata's handling capability a bit better. Thank you.
Love my 2016 Optima SX. Swapped out entire suspension for aftermarket. Threw in a front strut tower brace and upgraded rear sway bar. Now feels as sporty as it looks. 60,000 miles and still runs and looks like new. Does burn 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles though.

They both look great. Korean cars have come a long way. My very first car I bought was an 2006 Hyundai Tiburon V6. I never had a problem with the car. The only issues I had which was not the cars fault, is that the potholes here are so bad and with the sport tires, I kept getting bubbles in them from hitting these potholes. My mother also bought I think it was an 1999 Hyundai Sonata. After that she got I believe year 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. Then in 2013 I got the 2014 Hyundai Sonata Limited trading my Tiburon in. My mother also around 2014 got the Hyundai Elantra. I plan on this year getting the 2020 Hyundai Sonata limited in Stormy Blue color with the beige interior.
Never had an issue with Hyundai cars and I'll continue to stay with them. I'll even look at the Optima since Hyundai & Kia are the same company. I went to the dealership to test drive the Sonata about 2 months ago and my friend came with me, he was blown away by the technology in the Sonata Limited. I was too and I did a little bit of reading and watching videos beforehand. People used to make fun of Hyundai and the same thing with KIA, not anymore!

It’s amazing how some brands like Dodge, Toyota, Chevy... etc, provide so many features on their base models, while other companies consider the daylight running LED and the start/stop push button features that are limited to higher trim levels

Optima! Looks better and performs better but I just can't get over how both got rid of traditional shifter and replaced with button/dial. I usually put my right hand on the shifter and left hand on steering wheel when I drive (especially on highway), the lack of shifter is bothering me a bit..

Here in Canada, they just launched the new Sonata. Our base model is the 2.5L with so many base features, for such a low price. It is unbelievable. No Sonata N-Line yet. Also, Kia has not announced the new Optima yet. I'm very excited for the Kia Optima GT when it comes to Canada!

Well, we don't have 2.5L on the either Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima, but 1.6L turbo is more fuel efficient compare to 2.0L MPi. Thank you.

It's odd, I think the exact opposite.
I saw the 2021 K5 (Optima) in person in Fairbanks, AK. It looks 10 times better in person then in the video and that's saying a lot given that it looks amazing on camera.
I like them both, however I was at the auto show and the Sonata fully loaded was beautiful and felt like a big roomy sedan. The Optima favors the big brother the Stinger, but favors similar cars such as the Audi A4 and the VW Arteon, but it's very narrow inside within width in the cockpit sitting next to the passenger. In my opinion I like the Opitma..The French dosen't like this (Renault)..😇

I just purchased a Telluride SX for myself (i love it) and a 2020 Optima for my wife. I wanted her to wait until August so that she could test drive the new model design but once she saw the the picture's she decided she she wanted the old body style. Having said that I like the Kia. The Sonata's lines give the allusion that the car is closer to the ground then it actual is. The Kia's lines point up, especially in the rear. Both interiors look equally good however. Also, my wife's limited edition Optima has a 60 / 40 rear fold down seat...not a pass through slot.

You probably can go to Hyundai / Kia Korea website and see how much they offer on their local market. You can spec it with interior that looks like a Bentley if you want to

Both cars individually look awesome in their own right, but side by side, I find the Kia has got a more killer look both from front and side, certainly both look so much better than some Japanese makes.

...as a subscriber, thanks again for all your interesting and well-made early and (first ) reviews from Korea...Optima obviously has the much more elegant nose and tail design, by far...but Optima could have also used a rear hatch...as well as a more nicely-spaced stretched-out Optima name on the rear, instead of the simple Korea-only K5 insignia ...such a beautiful car

I wish they would give us the digital gauge cluster with the Blind Spot View Monitor in the U.S. Or at least give us a 7" center display to accomodate the Blind Spot View Monitor video feed in the gauge cluster. I mean this would make the K5 with the GT1 package perfect

I'm definitely waiting for the sonata N-line turbo engine dual exhaust.. fully loaded that's what a 2020 sonata should look like.. anything apart from n-line should be recalled for further testing and upgrade

Over the years, Kia has really stepped up to the next level in making quality great cars. Thanks to its Hyundai counter part. With these two cars, I opt for the Optima that is more aggressive, sophisticated and more stylish than oddly looking Sonata.

I like the front of the Optima better. The funny thing though is that I like the grill on the base Sonata better than the grill on the higher trim levels. I'm not wild about the rear end on either car. The Sonata is the lesser of two evils. I prefer the rear end of the 2020 Optima over the 2020 Sonata and 2021 Optima. I did test drive a 2020 Sonata SEL a couple of weeks ago and found the seats to be extremely comfortable - more comfortable that any of the other cars I have test driven. The next best was the 2020 Subaru Legacy and the most uncomfortable seats were on the 2020 Mazda 6.

That SPECIFIC Sonata looks better from the front, BUT......I think the Ootima looks better from the front than the Non Hybrid model Sonata. Arguably between these 2 are the best cars in their class, not a bad thing for Hyundai. Interior some design elements look better in Optima, some look better in the Sonata
