For me sub $1000 watch for this year is MIDO Ocean Star 39 with ETA2892-A2 tuned movement like L888 from Longines. Extraordinary dial, best movement at this price point, swiss made, sapphire crystal. Can't go wrong. That is my opinion ofc. Mentionet Maen is also a great watch.

I got the Citizen Zenshin green dial , and I absolutely love it. The texture on the dial is very cool. Don’t like the clasp, but otherwise it’s an absolute win! Maen moonphase or manhattan are definitely on my list as well!

Great choices! I only take issue with you crediting TAG/Heuer as the inventors of the automatic chronograph. That honor goes to our friends at Seiko, who had their speedtimers on shelves months before Heuer/Breitling/Hamilton managed to get the Caliber 11s out the door...and the Caliber 11 movement was such a mess that even the companies that developed it ended up switching over to Valjouxs within a few years...

A great alternative to that ancient pretty cheap(?) ($155 on Amazon) (+ the cost of a bracelet or strap) 5 series Seiko is the $120 Watchdives WD1016 Explorer type mecha quartz 100WR sapphire crystal applied markers BGW9 lume monster category killer. I have reverence for the Seiko 5 series, and if you don’t have one, that one is a good one. But I have one already and I’m not in a collect-em-all mood. One and done. Time to move on to something that is leaps and bounds beyond.

Above $5k subjective characteristics become more important. That’s why a Tudor will usually beat out more expensive watche brands. Longines vs Tudor is a same cost class comparison. Omega vs Tudor is not and the subjective characteristics become more important for the Omega.
FFS land mechanical $1500 for a seiko CALLER GMT?! There are so many micro GMT using miyota 9075 for that or less. Separately I love my original 6306 and modern Turtle but agree with Jony #JustOnMoreWatch about Seiko #1 worst of 2024.

For $100 or less I recommend the Casio Edifice EFB, Seiko VX43E Quartz, and is a really good alternative to Tissot’s PRX Quartz. Hits every marker.
