I'm an exception to the rule. My wife and I were friends on Facebook and texted each other every day for close to 3 years. Finally I came here with the intention to marry her. I bought her a ring before I booked my flight. We got married and I went back to the US and started the process to bring her to the US. It took close to 2 years to bring her home. We both worked hard and saved our money for 7 years in the US and built our house here In Cavite where we are retired and where we now live happily ever after. I knew she was the one before we ever met in person and we have been happily married for 10 years. My friends thought I was crazy, but I had no doubts. We make a great team. I hit the jackpot 😀

We did it in a similar fashion. Talked on FB Messenger for 3 years, then I finally took my first plane ride and visited for a week or so, then came back the next year for a month and got married, worked on her immigration and now we have been married 5 years. 3 and a half of those have been together in the US, and we plan on retiring back to Philippines in maybe 15 years hopefully.

You sure got a gem there, Mike. I am of course thinking of your lovely companion, Janet. Nice to take another look at that lovely country of yours. The people there are great, but the poverty is so staggering that I really can feel depressed about it. I hope that the government are able to turn this around and make the country more profitable for the majority of the people, so that there are less really poor people and that their social care system gets better. We live in a country where nobody really needs to sleep in the streets anymore, but there are still a few that seems not to be okay with letting others dictate where and how they should spend their day or nights, and they refuse to take on the help that is offered to them.

Traveling back and forth???? At first, yes, (2010) 4 weeks vacation, Boracay, Bohol, Coron, Makati, then 2 months here, then 6 months here, but every absence from my real estate career in Vancouver was hurting me more and more. I bought a white sand beach property here on Guimaras island province subject to the sale of my ocean view home outside Vancouver. And when that sold and I completed on my sale here I spent 22 months here in Philippines, my longest stay so far. The next trip back to Vancouver was my final trip, loading up some valuables in to a storage container getting rid of the rental house and moving here full-time. Now at 65, still healthy, a new relationship and happier than ever. Offering FOR SALE, 1 of our beach 🏖 lots and living / developing the other beach lot, keeping busy. A great place to retire and stay active! More fun in the Philippines 🇵🇭

Did I get lucky? Met my wife online, talked to her for almost two (2) years, went over to the Phils to meet her and her family, got to learn some of the habits of the local culture/ people, joined the local church and became a member of the community over time, learned to get around by myself and with the help of others...married now for 11 years (almost 12) and we do plan to make the philippines our permenent home in the near future....

Nice interview, you can't go far wrong with Paul, he's a wise 'Old Dog' . You made a good point in that interview about relationships l had not heard before Mike. You have to like and be happy living in the Philippines for any relationship to work out, so very true, it's about embracing and accepting the culture.

We have a house that we have family that lives there, so we always have our place. Shout out to Paul, we met him on his visit to Palm Desert last year! Hopefully we can visit Negros before we head home.

My wife and I were friends for about 3 years on Facebook. One day we realized we wanted to be more than just "pen pals". I bought my plane ticket and came here and had no doubt she was the one before we physically met. We got married and I returned back to the US to work and save to bring her to the US. We were apart for almost 2 years after we were married while dealing with the immigration requirements. Finally I got her home. We've been happily married for 10 years now. We both worked and saved to build a home in Cavite where we now are living and enjoying our retirement. My wife has close family ties as do most Filipinas and that is the main reason we are here, but the cheap cost of living and tropical climate are also a big plus.

Regarding brining someone to the USA - Our experience in 2019 - started K1 Visa and had the visa 5 months later; there is a lot of paperwork and you need to meet in person at least once. We used a company that helped to put together the paperwork. At the time they charged about $400 and the service was great. I can pass on their info to anyone that needs it. My wife has been with me in Los Angeles 3 years now and we expect to retire in 5 years and spend 1/2 time in the US and 1/3 in the Phils. We both love the US and Philippines.

I did the online GF thing in 2013 and found a good one. Flew over to Philippines and spent 21 days with her and her family, When I returned home, I filed the K1 Visa took over a year to get her to the USA and had 90 days to get married. Let me tell you it was like a rush thing not enough time to get to know a person. But we got married and still going strong.

Hi Paul and Mike, I am just now watching this video and I have a few comments on what you say about LDR, I have now been in a LDR relationship since 2020 with a girl from Bais not far from Dumaguete, I have been down and visit her for 2 months in November and December 2023, and down the road I can follow what you mean by LDR relationships not lasting, BUT ours has now done that for 4 years. I think this is because we both have a bad relationship behind us and that we have respect for each other. We respect each other and always speak nicely to each other and we have never argued about things, we solve it by talking about it. I just have to say that I have been married twice before to Filipinas, my first wife (in 1989) I was married to for 21 years in Denmark and the second for 10 years in Sweden, I have no intention of moving to Bais or Dumaguete, but I have to get them up here to Sweden because I don't have enough money in my pension, so it will be later. I also have a little boy of 10 years in Sweden who I cannot leave right now. Greetings from Gert Denmark/Sweden

Im 56 and semi-retired RN and plan to live 30/70 PH/USA because I have a seasonal side hustle in USA that I can make enough to support me the rest of the year in PH. My roommates take care of my home and auto shop in the USA and they pay the utils, so it don't cost me anything to live in the USA as far as that goes. If my future wife wants to go to USA to work and help support her family that's OK with me but that will take at least 2 years for her to get a USA VISA, so I can at least try it for 2+ years before that happens. I also enjoy going back home and playing with my toys and friends. And I will never sell my house there because its a safety net if my health fails. Bottom line is life is dynamic and we are all different. This is my second time around with a Filipina and I cant go back to American women. The first one last 24 years and we still friends just wanted different things and grew apart. She is a RN too. I've known hundreds of Americans successfully married to Filipina they met online and came to PH for just a vacation before either marrying them or fiancé visa and 90% worked out fine. On my first one there was no internet. we did letters and phone.

I bought a Bajaj 3 wheeler at Emcor 4 years ago.
I like the protection ( at least from two wheelers)that the extra metal provides, as well as the seating capacity, cargo space( we added a roof rack), and fully functional lights!
The downside is mine is a tad underpowered on grades( newer models have 50cc more).
Also, the bias ply tires, and trike configuration, have a bit of a learning curve, getting used to the way the machine corners especially...
I'm looking at a Mahindra Enforcer on our next visit. Mitsubishi Diesel powered, and looks like a Jeep pickup

I really like what Mike said - visit the Philippines and decide if you want to live here, chose where you want to live then find a local girl in that area. It is too tempting to check online profiles and once you see these lovely ladies it's hard to not want to reach out to them then you will want to meet them where they live. I was teasing my wife recently and told her you know if I had to this again I would have chosen Baguio for the cooler temps and better soil that where we are now - which implies we would have different partners :O

Good to see guys like y'all who have such pragmatic common sense. I tend to identify with that type. Yeah, the trikes (public trans) it's not a big deal but it can just tire your mind out having to think about having the cash and then the tip and then the communications with the driver, the waiting, the noise...To ride motorbike/scooter is a tough decision... moped is so freeing and so ideal BUT yeah like Paul mentioned....a dog might actually be attracted to the bike and jet right into you. Know a guy that died on his motorcycle when a deer jumped in front of him. I guess I would probably agree with Paul and ixnay on the motorbike out of precaution. Thanks for sharing!

  • @michaelatoz580

On my visits I found a reliable trike driver I use for exclusive use. I will ride the Jeepney into the big town have him pick us up at bus station do our shopping, eating and pay him to drive us back home. I would pay between 600 and 1000 peso for this service. Granted I could have paid less but we are vacation and the convince that this gives us in priceless. This is only once a week for 3 to 4 weeks. Plus, it's nice to give a hard-working person a little extra. Also, I have a friend I'm trying to talk into coming with me when I retire in the next few years to the Philippines to come for 5 to 6 months for the winter. Rent in Florida is $2000 plus a month for a winter get away. I told him he can rent a place the whole year for 2 months rent in Florida in a province and just leave your stuff behind. What I'm saying if you want to be a snowbird its way cheaper then Florida or Arizonia.

Paul, I like what you mentioned about your friend having an apartment for 6 months (or more) & the apartment place keeps his stuff in storage for the months he's not there until he returns. This sounds a lot like what I would like to do as I travel around SE Asia or visit back in America.

I've been laying the ground work for retirement there. Watch out for dogs riding your scooter south of Dumaguete. Bacong to Zanboanguite is a nightmare with the dogs running in the road.

I would really like to see someone discuss at length what it's like there during the rainy months. How much & how often does it actually rain in various months? How often are you cooped up in the house for days? How much of the year are the beaches not doable? What happens when you live outside of town, only own a motorbike & it rains for days? Etc...

I can only tell you my experience from living here on Samal Island for the last year.
I and my fiancee own our own house so we don't rent, we use the money we would rent with to take day trips to different resorts for swimming and lunch here on the island.
We don't let the weather stop us from doing anything.
I bought a Suzuki Swift the same month I got here, we use that for long distance travel and to the big city of Davao.
After the car we bought 2 Scooters my wife likes her Yamaha i125s Mio and I like my Suzuki Burgman, we use them when the weather's nice. But I found we couldn't carry all our groceries on the scooters and finding parking down town with our car was a pain in the Ass having to park 2 or 3 blocks away then having to walk to the supermarket and back. So I bought a TVS 3 wheel Tuk Tuk and finding parking near the stores and smallet local shops is easier.
We found the water and beaches to be beautiful year round. When I got here my wife didn't know how to swim now I can't get her out of the water to eat lunch.
I'm on Facebook Bud Marlin if you are interested in seeing what life is like here on Samal Island Garden City Davao.

So fun to watch 2 guys I watch regularly do a video together :) Thanks for the info. Even though my husband and I are still young we would enjoy help at home when we move there, because we plan on being busy with life :) I love the 3-wheeled vehicles, I think they are so cute, but not sure what we would do for transportation yet. I already don't like driving in America already! So I will probably be a professional passenger. Thanks for the fun video! It put a lot of pictures in my mind :) Hey there's like a 90-year-old guy in my neighborhood who rides his bike every day, dodging the stray dogs and tumbleweeds - you guys are my heroes! I've started vlogging about my efforts to move there, I hope you'll stop by my channel.

I found that for me was to make friends with the people/women in church. You can learn who is who, their thoughts of dating an American, how serious they are about relations over the long term, how their families feel about foreighn men, what kind of life they have now and what they expect in the future from you.....

Amazingly timely AGAIN! I will be there in next month to try to get the lot to build on. One of my biggest concerns is riding a bike as it seems like it will be a bit of a challenge for me as I am not used to it and like to relax while driving. I loved mini-trucks when I visited there last. Maybe @BudBrown will sell me his on his way out 😁 LOL

To be fair, Paul lets his wife's girls plug in their YT or social media name so they can make contact directly. I'm also with Paul on LDR is nonsense and laziness. Just hop on plane and go there directly. I don't think i would like to live there as I've been there a few times, great for 2 week - 1 month visit. The beautiful thing about Philippines is there are many countries to visit or hop around to. Married to my filipina who I met in China, we will retire in PI, but hop to other countries to keep things fresh and to avoid too much family or local drama chismis nonsense.

Mike, i have inquired about the Home Care topic with my co workers who are Filipinos, they would often tell me that, Patient Rights are very different there, meaning, patient dont have a lot of Rights, answers i got is that people get treated very poorly in those environment, so if an elder Foreigner end up in those homes, and gets mistreated, there's very little Recourse, and over there, as u know, they're very few people one can lean on to look after their interest, there's no family circle to fall back. Hence, if one can afford hiring a nurse or Nurse student, better do it that way.

It's the best of both worlds.
I keep my duplex in American and my truck.
Spend 2 months a year vacationing visiting family and friends in America and 10 months a year with my soon to be wife here in Samal Island Garden City Davao.
    We own our home here.
    Have our own transportation here.
We bought a car when I got here, then our 2 scooters, and a TVS 3 wheel Tuk Tuk
We use our scooters when the weather's nice near home away from home we use the car for long distance to 3 day stays at resorts here on the Island and trips to the big city of Davao. The TVS 3 wheel to bring boxes home from the Supermarket once a week, much easier to find parking then our car.
Have had 3 Filipina girlfriends, 2 I got fiancee visa's for and found out both were cheating on me. I agree it's best to just come here and live. The first year is always the hardest living together anyway.
My 3rd girlfriend an i talked online during the pandemic for 2 an a half years i then came here to live last March 2022 and we've been together ever since and are now planning to get married in June.
    Good video guys.

I have "0" ties, here in The U.S., and I've already sold everything, except my car (and my furniture, which I'll give away) and I won't be
"semi-retiring" in Davao City until 4/2024. I had planned on leaving in 6/23 but my boss "begged" me to stay (and made it worth my
while) so I've reschedule my escape. The other good thing about postponing my "exit" is that I'll save another $30,000, so I really can't
complain about that. I'll be "loaded", but I will not buy any vehicle, as I have NO desire to enter the P.I. Demolition Derby, and I'll just
use taxis, and save all the risk, stress and hassle (and) the public transportation in Davao is very good, so no worries.

just trying to "get some" ? thats when the professional GF is for temporarily..
