Volk is hands down one of the most skilled, well rounded and ruthless competitors we have EVER seen. A game more rounded than GSP, a gas tank superior to Max Holloway, balls bigger than Francis. What a fierce competitor he is, absolutely phenomenal

Yair was an absolute joy to watch. So much physical talent and dazzling creativity, coupled with pure brutality. Amazing performance.
Him and Moreno are the only Mexican fighter that do them true justice we need more of them from that part of the world and they should have a card their man their special talents!

Volk ending the fight in such a dominant position really is what makes it “feel” like he won. He was dragging Islam into the deep water, just didn’t have enough time to finish the job. But round by round, Islam won 3 rounds.

Islam had everything to lose, went to Volk’s backyard, put his title on the line, no Khabib, against a featherweight who he’s “supposed to beat” and beat him at his own game in the standup.
He’s beaten P4P no.1 and no.3 in 4 months. That’s never been done before, put some respect on his name.
Islam was a -400 heading into this fight, I was expecting a KO or sub within 3 rounds and.. he scrapes a decision against a smaller guy? How did this guy even beat anyone in the UFC, he doesn't belong.
Almost passed out multiple times after fight. Volk could have went 5 more rounds, and if the so, Volk wins the fight.

Volk surprised me, I’ve never seen someone defend so well against the Dagestan wrestling. On the other hand Islam striking against one of the best was amazing. Both unlocked new skills and the Yair fight was also technically elite 🔥👏🔥
Volk is shorter, but definitely not a smaller guy for LW. He used to compete at WW before he went down to LW then FW.
if there is a debate about who won because the fight was so close, there should be an immediate rematch, especially when it was that entertaining.

Islam won the first 2 rounds through better strikes (who would have thought) and take downs, round 3 was close but could be given to Volk. Round 4 was Islam’s again for the same reasons as above and control. Round 5 Volk dominated the final minute soo won the round convincingly but overall Islam was the better fighter on the night and would win more convincing under different circumstances like Dubai. Both fighters are absolutely elite and definitely the best two in the world! 👏🏽 👏🏽
If Islam wins a couple more and volkanovski does they should rematch
the way I see it, Volk doesn't lose p4p status... Volk wasn't finished, he wasn't dominated and if he was awarded the decision, people would be saying the same about Islam, as they are saying right now about Volk. Great fight, to witness such talent was a blessing.

I understand this sentiment, but... consider... what does the WWE do so well? They let the tension simmer and build. Let both men defend their titles once before making this rematch. That could still be as little as a 10-12 month follow-up.

The optics of final moments spread all the confusion. It was a comfortable unanimous decision for Makhachev and Islam was clearly the better all round fighter with not only better grappling but also striking.
The only argument was ... should the score be 48,47 or 49,46 for him .
Islaom only mistake is not to finish Volk when he had the right position & time. It may have Something to do with Volk's awkward body structure.

People don't understand how a significant strike is scored on paper. All strikes from distance no matter if its just a faint touch to body is considered significant strike.
Islam had the more precise and damaging strikes while volk most of the time was reckless & hurling punches in the air.

Because everyone was so shocked that burns the number 2 guy didn’t get ran over by khamzat so khamzat can’t be champ may e he’s not that good. He still won and has beaten everyone else. Khamzat and Islam found they’re cryptonite yet still one.
It’s very similar because I and a lot of fans think burns won that fight. It’s similar too because it’s not a robbery just a close fight, but because of weight and other disadvantages it feels like he should’ve gotten the nod!

Volk is being given too much credit which slightly feels wrong cause at the end of the day he is a fighter that fought on the same weight as Islam and he had the crowd behind him which gives him more advantage. Volk impressed everyone, and showed his best form, Islam was forced to bring out his best and Islam jus barely snuck out 3 rounds to 2.. But Volk took less damage, and was the fresher guy at the end, cuz he drained Islam right to the bell. Was a pleasure to witness.

Volkanovski proved himself that he can bang. He can defend against the grapple. He took on the vice grip of Islam and was able to counter him. This is a fight the mma community would pay to watch again. Volk is tough.

The pound for pound question isn’t clear I personally think. The reason being that Volk went up and Islam stayed at his natural weight class. With it being so close the only equivalent for Islam is that if he went up a weight class and won or was wishing 1 round of winning. Volk had the bigger challenge so shows he’s good enough to span weight classes, Islam has not shown that yet. Not saying he can’t as he is amazing but Volk currently has done more for pound for pound than Islam. Either way amazing fight but I’m just not sure at the p4p bit
I just found out that Islam was recovering not 36 hours, but 24. Because of the Australian time, they had a fight in the morning. And the Wolf, on the contrary, almost did not recover. It was the only chance to snatch victory, Alexander will not have such a chance in the rematch. It is better for Islam not to travel so far, it is better in America or Abu Dhabi.
