Haha - excellent! We had a drop of snow in the UK a couple of days ago, the way our media responded you'd think a mighty blizzard had swamped the country in six feet of the stuff. I don't have a bicycle with a coaster brake, it's a situation I need to remedy. Cheers👍🏼
Yeah coaster brakes are fun for casual riding :) oh it would be cool to compare snow warnings around the world. We had cars flipping over and entire highways are shut down today, but it’s all a part of the normal :)
Every cyclist needs a coaster brake bicycle that they find in their adult life to rekindle the simplicity. Trash Bike is like a best friend. I think the slow reaction coaster engagement has to do with the washers in the brake mechanism. As far as it being intermittent, that I don't know.
1:54 The biggest enemy is snow, not ice. Particularly partially compacted snow. Traction on ice is solved entirely with a set of studded tires, but until the roads are ploughed, there's nothing can do about the snow. Virgin snow is OK, but when cars pack it down unevenly it gets treacherous.
Sure, I understand what you mean. I wouldn’t ride on snowy car roads. But if you have to, that’s sketchy as heck. And I also don’t have studded tires, so we have different perspectives. Happy and safe winter riding!
Dude I already left comments but I love your videos, they are so relaxing and they always seem to make me smile as well, also your English is literally perfect (I am assuming it’s a second language!) I love riding in the cold and snow!
Great video man! You're really motivating me out, you're underrated but the video quality you give us is something else! I really agree with your saying that "your worst enemy is ice" because i know it might pierce into your wheels and will leave you stranded.
I train indoors in the winter, but I still commute. The best investment I ever made was snow gear. Pants, jacket, and gloves. Neoprene type material for stretch and insulation, zippered armpits for ventilation, and so far they've been wind and waterproof.
I have never seen snow, I think I would die trying to ride it with a skinny road tire bike on it whilst filming with one hand. Look foward to shreks unveling as a princess bike, hope your winter isnt too long.
Haha, yeah I have fallen and crashed many times in my life. Never anything serious though, but we all have to learn the hard way that the front wheel is a different beast in winter :)
The ice is what really makes my bike rides suffer, the council doesn’t put much effort (I.E any) into salting the cycle paths so it’s either risk falling over or ride on a busy city road and nearly get run over.
@@weezersthebluealbum9479 i use studded tires and those work great on ice. Before u get them make sure they are legal where u live. They aren't allowed in some places.
@@cmmartti i have no idea. I guess i am just making sure that people don't get into trouble because i don't know the laws of every country and it would not suprice if there was a country where studded tires were completely illegal.
I should get out my Huffy step through bike. Been a long time since I've ridden it. Been practicing on my Fixed Gear bike, mostly, since finishing it. The step through Huffy frame was found in a dumpster. No wheels, just frame and fork and rear fender. I'll have to make a video on it.
The coaster brake I had on my bicycle in the winter of 2022-2023 started losing function at around -25C because the grease inside of it froze up. Keep that in mind so that you don't get trouble braking in cold weather.
@@addvurtbikes changing the grease for a cold-resistant one should help. And having additional brakes, even simple rim brakes. Mudguards would be quite nice to have too, actually. Though, my first city bicycle had them so close to the wheels that snow clumped up inside.
Man I'm so spoiled with great weather here in Brisbane, Australia. Here the summer is on the bad end of the spectrum though. I've mountain biked in humid 38C and was dehydrated and wrecked for ages... But it was the only time I had free to go! A friends friend died on a similar day from some heat related heart attack.. so it's legit serious. At least with cold you can manage layers! Anyway I don't know where I'm going with this. Have a great winter and do what I can't locally... splitboarding :)
Spoiled with lots of great weather but challenged with lots of scary spiders :D Oh yeah, heat is dangerous. You Australians certainly know that better than most people in the "western" world.
We had an initial snow this week here in MN. And it was super satisfying to go on a night ride and see the flakes showing up in the headlight. But I'd still like to see that chain video....
I only rode occasionally in the snow the last few years but this fall I started biking to the local 7-11 a mile away to get my morning caffeine. I continued as the snow came, being careful to judge the surfaces. Here it is not unusual to get short thaws followed by overnight cold resulting in ice, then that gets covered by snow, a deadly combination. So far so good!
no issue. just need proper equipment. i use ice spiker pro tires during winter + kmc ept chain + winter specific chain lubricant. those couple thing makes riding during winter much better.
Yeah there is a lot of very good winter equipment. But I only really ride for fun or very short distances, so I never really bother with buying any of it. I’m a bit lazy too, don’t want to NEED to rebuild my bikes for winter. But that’s just me :)
@@addvurtbikes yes for shorter trips they are okay. I just like to go everywhere by bike so it is important to have good bike for that and if you have two wheelset it's not too hard to do that stuff.
@ yeah when I worked I seen it took 26 minute walking to my job or driving. I took that as a challenge. My first week I got it to 23. Then one week and a day. 21. It was great to challenge myself but I rode in bitter cold. Freezing rain then little snow. Street were good no ice no snow I rode til it was bad then. I started my own journey working my own practice now I work out of home I ride just because I’m free when when I ride my bikes
Man extreme weather is much more fun in the north. I mean, not complaining, I can go anywhere in the winter by bike without ice or snow, but riding when it's 40ºC outside isn't as fun as riding in the snow...
Yeah, I personally am terrible at handling heat, so I probably wouldn't trade what I have for most of the world's climates. The ideal solution would be to just migrate south in the winter and north in the summer :) By bike, of course!
riding my mountain bike on a completely snow covered trail last year was some of the most fun i had in winter since i was a kid
That sounds absolutely amazing! Huge tires and a slight downhill angle? Dream!
Another great video; the essence of cycling; just go, explore, take what comes, enjoy.
Thank you my friend! Yeah, it’s always a good time to:)

Yeah! Coaster brake or fixed gear, whichever compels you! Washers in the brake mechanism sounds like a hard time to fix…
No wrong weather, only wrong gear/strategies. Just got back from taking the fat tire bike up some fire roads in our first big downpour of the season.
Sounds like a lovely time! Are you Scandinavian by the way? Your first sentence is basically our equivalent of “live laugh love” 😅

Anxiously awaiting to ride in the snow in Canada as well, I'm pretty sick of the cold rain.
Yeah, rain is worse than snow at some point. I hope you get it soon then!
