I couldn't help but tap on this video even though I knew I'd be crying the whole way through. It was the song that my wife and I danced to at our wedding. In my opinion Sebastian Bach has one of the most underrated voices. In pure quality and control I believe it's one of the best male singing voices in the past couple of decades.

    • @skelatorus
      @skelatorus 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

His problem was singing live. He's like Axl Rose, gives it too much too early and loses his voice away too quickly. And back in the 80s he was always wasted on stage. I saw them once in '92 and they were good but a bit of a let down.

One of the most underrated to come from the hair metal scene. Many knew his talent, sadly the short longevity and lack of consistency of hits after their first release banished them to tour openers rather than Top Guys. I recall at the Moscow Music Peace Festival Crew, Row, Zack Wylde, and Jason Bonham covered "Rock & Roll" with Bach and Vince going back and forth and Bach just simply destroyed him on stage. Not too surprising now the way we know Vince turned out. But back then you immediately knew this dude (Bach) had chops for days with Crew being one of the biggest acts at that show and Row being relative new comers.

The best way I can describe Sebastian Bach.
He is a well trained war horse. There is a massive amount of power in him. He can make it prance, canter, walk, gallop and full out power run. He knows how to and when to hold back. Yet even when gentle you can feel the power there.
Like petting a giant work horse. You can feel the power underneath the surface, you know that horse could hurt you but they can hold it in and be so sweet and gentle.
That is Sebastian, his voice can be so sweet and gentle. But he can turn that power on whenever he pleases. It is always impressive.

‘Monkey Business’ is the Skid Row you thought you were getting. Most of the band did not even want to record this song, but Bach wanted too (He was in charge of exactly nothing at the time), and Doc McGee (who was their manager - and KISS’s manager, and Bon Jovi’s manager, listened to the rough version, sided with Bach and forced them to do it. Everyone’s telling you to do ‘Wasted Time’ but you need to do the harder stuff that the band actually wanted to do - like ‘Slave to the Grind’ or the aforementioned ‘Monkey Business’ or even ‘18 and Life’ also a power ballad.

I've yet to see a vocal analyst on YT give enough credit to Sebastian's dirty/distorted screams. That's where his emotional delivery really shines and he's just on another level with it. It's really difficult to figure out how do that without wrecking your voice for the rest of the song. And it's even more difficult to scream on-pitch while walking up and down scales. Now start clean, transition to a dirty scream, then back to clean again like he does in this song. It's simply amazing, and yet too often (IMO) tragically overlooked and underrated.

This is an outstanding breakdown, and I'm not even done listening to it yet.
This is a song I am working on to sing along to solo acoustic accompaniment. The absolute most important thing that I learned doing this song is what you pointed out at the beginning of this video. If I can sing this as just a part of my natural breathing, taking deep breaths that are timed just before each line, I can make it most of the way through the song. But I struggle with PND, and there is always a fear that I'm going to cough if I take a deep breath right before a line, so I'm only able to keep that up for so long before my discipline breaks. In most songs, there are breaks here and there where I can collect myself, but Bach is doing this the whole freaking song except for the solo. Every single moment of this song outside of the solo is dedicated to some kind of action that gets ready for the next line, and if I miss one of those, the entire rest of the song is kaput.
I don't struggle with hitting the notes, per se. I struggle hitting the notes because, quite frankly, I'm winded by the time we get to the tough ones.

In fact a lot of guys with bigger noses are really good high pitched singers,,,, think of Steve Perry. Getty Lee. Does the nose have anything to do with it?....

Fun fact about this song: the one line at the end of the song that has the extra harmony you noticed on "I remember...", that harmony is sung by Jon Bon Jovi. He heard the song and said "I gotta be on this" so they hid him in there uncredited.
In a Darkened Room by Skid Row is my favorite song in the entire world. I have it tattooed on me. It makes me emotional, and Sebastian's voice on that song is unbelievable. Please review that one!! They have been my favorite band since i was a little kid, they mean the world to me. Scotti Hill is hands down my favorite guitar player on earth (who i was lucky enough to meet a few weeks ago and is a truly wonderful person) and he is known for his highly emotive guitar solos, especially on their ballads.

I was 13 years old when Skid Row's debut album came out and I immediately fell in love with Sebastian Bach. I had posters of him and the band all over my room. It was clear that he was something special and he stood out from the rest of the rock stars of the time. I remember sitting in front of my TV and watching this video over and over. I still get goosebumps when I hear this song. It's so beautiful.
I really enjoyed your analysis because after all these years and hundreds of times I've heard it, you've made me hear it in a way I never did before. Like other commenters have said, you should definitely do an analysis of Wasted Time and In a Darkened Room.
A few things to know about Sebastian - he began singing pretty early in his childhood and was a natural performer. When he told his father that he wanted to be a rock star his dad said that he would support him and get him the proper training to do it if he was really serious so he did go through professional vocal training. Sebastian's last name isn't really Bach. It's Bierk and his father David was an artist. One of the things he painted was the cover of Skid Row's 2nd album, Slave to the Grind.
Sebastian also was on Broadway in Jekyll & Hyde, The Rocky Horror Show, and Jesus Christ Superstar. I was lucky enough to see him in Jekyll & Hyde and The Rocky Horror Show. He was amazing. He also had a role on Gilmore Girls. Sebastian's still going strong and he's one of the only rock guys from the late 80s/90s who still tries to keep that kind of music alive.
I think it's so funny that people in the comments here are saying that he's an underrated singer. He absolutely is not. He's known for being one of the best rock vocalists in history. The people who say this must be really young. Just because you've never heard of someone or something doesn't mean that it's underrated. At the time Skid Row's album came out, this kind of music was incredibly popular. Anyway, those of you who want to know more about him should just Google him. There's plenty that you'll find that'll show you that he's far from underrated. There's also a semi-decent A&E Biography that was recently made about him.

80’s music still gives me butterflies because it reminds me of such an amazing time to grow up. There’s a movie that plays in my head of riding in truck beds to the river and everyone singing at the top of their lungs or cruising up and down main street in my Trans Am with the t-tops off and everyone having their music blasting or jumping off cliffs into old coal pits and someone’s car radio blaring in the background. Growing up in the country we didn’t have much so everything revolved around music. I’d go back if I could. I’m still grieving 🤣

That ending of the first chorus is one of my favorite parts of this whole song, along with the very end of the song. It's just SO hauntingly beautiful. I've loved this song since the day I first heard it in 1988 or 89. It was on my "Love Songs" mixtape that my teenage friends and I would play, chilling in the woods around a bonfire at night, underage drinking, and slow dancing with the girls. Such wonderful memories and such a wonderful song.

Sebastian Bach learned to sing in a church choir if I'm not mistaken, and I remember when I first listened to Skid Row and thinking his voice sounded like lightning. He has such a powerful and underrated voice. I really recommend you to hear In a Darkened Room, from their second album, to have an idea of how powerful his voice can be.
