Great video! There was a small part during the butt dyno portion where you mentioned the Enduro mode with the GET having level 10 traction control being the best mode ever. Did it automatically have the traction control on? And this was prior to changing the exhaust out? I live near Phoenix and our terrain looks very similar. After watching your videos I am sure I want the Honda. Test road a Husq FE501s, it felt very skinny and light and unstable on the pavement. It got head shakes intermittently and I wasn't even going over rough roads or highway speeds. Have you experienced this?
The Athena GET in mode 2 comes with level 10 TC on it I would suggest to add the GET TC knob so you can adjust it perfectly to the conditions The mode is absolutely amazing but in a few cases I would like to have a little less TC Like here in the SW desert after a rain those rocks get slick and rutted and I would like a little more feel

hello Doug amazing video queastion: do you have to reset you TPS-throttle position sensor.. after instaling any of those units? or just plug and goo? I have 2023 KTM 500 EXF-C thank you
So for the butt dyno and wheelies I know you say the AIM is the way to go, but you put the GET as having more power bottom end anyway. Is the AIM better due to the surge of power specifically or does it actually have some more grunt down low than the GET?
The AiM has about as much down low as the GET but the GET delivers it way smoother if that makes sense Also the GET powerband is longer so when you are shifting into second on the AiM you are still in first on the GET.I bought the AiM for myself and I love it but I ride a lot of singletrack and the GET is easier to ride because of its power. If I was racing supermoto or canyon riding I would go with the AiM
Outstanding video series…but… I have a 2021 CRF450RL. I immediately bought a Yoshi pipe/header and a Vortex. The improvement was immediate and dramatic from stock, but I still felt the throttle was to abrupt off the bottom for trail riding, the fuel economy took a big hit, and I got the phantom engine dieing issue that is known with the Vortex. I called Tokyo Mods looking to get their recommendation on which ECU I should switch to, the GET or the AiM. To my surprise, Justin at Tokyo Mods said the Vortex is hands down the best ECU for the CRF and I just needed updated mapping. I was stunned since pretty much everyone doing reviews came to a different conclusion. Perhaps the latest mapping for the Vortex is just that much better than the versions from a year ago?
Simple (ish) - with the Vortex and the Yoshimura you have about 2 power maps (trail and dyno) a traction map (enduro) and a torque map (heavy sand). I thinkk that last map is the fuel guzzler. And a stock map. The other maps are duplicates for the fmf pipe. All that woffle about chip sets misses the point about what an ecu needs to do. The fuel trim options? well the standard mid settting is 5,5,5. All ECUs, when they have an exhaust oxygen sensor can cope with altitude changes AFAIK. I think the person's style of riding will also dictate what you want from an ECU/pipe. I've just picked up a crf450L with fmf pipe and Vortex ecu. It was set to 8 (heavy - sand) but on the stand I put it on power 1 Tail (setting 6) and the throttle response is very snappy. I've got to do some work on the bike but I will try map 7 (traction enduro) just to test the throttle response on the stand. To be honest I do want a more mellow throttle response - I used to have the KTM 400 EXC and loved its rideability. I don't need a weapon. I want to chug up big hills and get to the top and enjoy the view 🙂
Great video .. loved watching it. Question: Im leaning more towards the GET ecu. I guess this comes with two maps, what are the maps it comes with .. Enduro?, racing?, etc.
That's horrible you had to wait 25 weeks to only cancel the Vortex ECU, nothing should take that long in our industry. I personally had trouble getting Vortex from one US supplier, but the other suppliers willing sent 5-10 at a time every few weeks when available. GET & AIM got a lot of traction this past year due to the supply crisis that Vortex is working through. I've sold several hundred Vortex units (YFZ,CRF,KTM) over the years and can count on one hand how many times we had to help out an end user. I sold less than 50 controllers combined from AIM/GET, and the support calls are through the roof. The bugs will eventually iron out on the two new units, and it may keep Vortex from another price hike. :) Who remembers when the Vortex ECU was 699+50$ for the map switch? Now they're 799 w/o map switch! Luckily, I stopped using the map switch after the new wore off, so I'd likely not buy another one for a future build. I simply don't cycle through maps once I get use to one. In any case, Vortex has proven to be very durable without question over the years in my experience. I know it's not the latest controller on the market, but it's still the greatest to date. I believe small dealer margins, supply chain issue, and price hikes are creating the perfect storm for AIM and Athena's GET ECU. I'd love to revisit this comment in two years to see how everything played out. I really like those cabinets in the background! I need a whole wall of them in white! haha
Best review i saw till now. This bike also need a better lower first gear and a higher six gear then he can be a real unicorn. I love mine but cant invest the money to actually make it a unicorn
Thanks for making the video. I ride a 2018 Ktm 500 EXCF. If I want to keep as much of the stock excellent fuel milage for highway traveling and with a flip of a switch completely stop flameouts and have a great do it all power band for off road which ECU will do that?
The AiM can do that if you take Map 3, which is a fuel economy mode The mode though on my Honda was surging at 50+ MPH so I adjusted the fueling up to 5, which you can easily do with the switch but you have a KTM so maybe different If you buy the AiM and need help shoot me an email a bornagoon@gmail.com and I can help you tweak it
I just bought your exact bike - a used 2022 CRF450RL. My heart sank as I watched some of your earlier videos about regrets and problems. Questions: 1. Did your new after market ECUs solve the jerking and stalling on single tracks? Do you still have regrets for off road after installing the non-factory ECU? 2. My bike came with 900 miles and a decent price, but it also came without a manual. I cannot find anywhere an explanation of the procedure for activating the torque control on the RL. Can you provide the steps necessary to activate the Select Torque (traction) control for the RL (the L, the X, etc seem to have different procedures). 3. After installing a different ECU, is the activation of torque control a different procedure or the same as the non-modified RL?
1 - Yes the ECU was the best upgrade ever No off road problems at all now 2. I have no idea how to do that 3. With the GET ECU everything is adjustable through the wifi app TPS, fueling, rpms etc it can all be adjusted
@@BornAGoon 2. Torque control is same as traction control. The reason you dont know how to activate it is because the RL does not have it. My bad. I thought it did because the the 450X, the 450R have it so I just assumed the RL had it. It doesn't. My mistake. I don't think I want it anyway.

Considering ditching my CRF250L for the 450RL & have watched a lot of vids on 450 problems & mods. The one thing I haven't seen anywhere, is a video that compares the original Honda ECU to any of the aftermarket options. Many people mention issues with the OEM parts, but I haven't found one vid that shows them. Need to see the baseline data.
because the stock ecu is trash It is the worst ecu I have riden on in the modern era It is unrideable on anthing more technical than a fire road It really is bad
@@BornAGoon the salesman at my Honda dealership mentioned having the ecu "reflashed". This was before I started researching the 450. It must be pretty bad.

Just call taco moto tell them what bike you have and exhaust and they will flash it for you When you get just plug it in and go You don’t have to adjust anything it’s good as a plug and play
Hello Doug. Great comparison. I have a 2023 450RL that I would like to leave the exhaust system alone for now. I like to keep as quiet as possible when woods riding. So in saying that , would you still recommend your shootout winner for a mostly stock bike that can be lugged around in tight stuff and still perform well on flat out roads and highway ? Thanks for any info.
Yes hands down I would use the Athena GET I have them both and 5 months later and 6 different exhaust combos etc I havent changed my mind The GET stays in my bike 95% of the time now it runs so good with it
Regarding your GET WiFi take. I don't have a GET. But the way small wifi doo-dads usually work, is they broadcast their own network, that you connect your phone to. Then the phone app talks to the device. You don't need "a wifi;" it doesn't connect through your home wifi or Starbucks, etc.
The most informative hour ever! Now you have choices for the honda. And depending on you skill and wants you have a path. I wander why honda makes such a bad map in the first place? A premium bike that is not fully exposed to its potential at this price point is sad.
So when you receive the get ecu from taco Moto, it’s already programmed with their custom maps and all you got to do is plug and play?, if I order the one without Wi-Fi that is?
Yes its plug and play I havent had to use the wifi for any adjustments yet and I now ride without it If you can afford it go for it but if not its not a big deal

The Vortex's have problems. With the first, my bike would not start. With the second, it starts but has cold start problems and takes 4 to 5 times before starting. Be careful
I had cold starting issues with my Vortex until I quit pulling the choke for cold starts. If I pull the choke it’ll die 4-5 times before it will idle. If I don’t pull the choke and just hit the starter it starts and idles every time.
Vortex is not hard to get, order thru them,Australia to Oklahoma in 8 days. How i see it the other options have been hard to get up untill the last month or so. We still need a independent test were the ecu wasnt provided by a company pushing a certain ecu.Plus lets see the dyno data.
Well I did say in the vid that you have to order direct as Vortex isn't shipping to distributors and explained why. However, this is an independent test and one that was done fairly based on what was in front of me. While the Vortex is an awesome unit that will fix the 450RL issues, it falls short compared to the other 2 units. Regardless of who supplied the units, my job is to tell the truth about them, which I did. In the end, the GET ECU gives you the best usable power out of all of them Dyno results will not show useability
For full disclosure - Taco Moto provided a loaner Vortex and GET for the purposes of Doug’s testing, he’d prev purchased an AIM at full cost for his own use. While we’ve loaned the hardware being tested we have no stake or claim in the content or how it is presented here. All opinions and conclusions are those of the test rider and video creator. This may be the only video of its kind testing and reviewing all three available ecu units and it’s clear he’s done his homework and prepared a well considered editorial opinion here.
Dyno graphs really don't mean anything besides who has a highest peak hp. To some that's all that matters but I and probably most others want to know how they feel on the "but Dyno"
It’s not uncommon in in the world of social media nor do we hide the fact that companies loan or discount components for testing and evaluation and Doug disclosed these facts where applicable
technically you could if you re-pinned the plug on the ecu because the pin layout is different. From what I've read the 450x experiences the same issues the L and RL so no real point in running an X ecu.
@@lancerambert The bike has to emissions nationwide. Honda is not going to make a model specifically to meet CA emissions specs. Therefore the same ECM is on all of their bikes. If it runs shitty in CA, it’s going to run shitty everywhere.

Thanks for the reply! I put a deposit down on the bike yesterday. My dealer is expecting 4 to be delivered between now and the end of February. STOKED!
hello Doug amazing video
queastion: do you have to reset you TPS-throttle position sensor.. after instaling any of those units?
or just plug and goo?
I have 2023 KTM 500 EXF-C
thank you
Always recommended to do the tps calibration on any ecu
Map 1 is full power and map 2 is enduro, If you get the traction control knob you can adjust TC in the maps
Espectacularrrrrr graciass
Thank you
That's horrible you had to wait 25 weeks to only cancel the Vortex ECU, nothing should take that long in our industry. I need a whole wall of them in white! haha
I went with the GET just use map 1 so far love the bike and no issues
Questions:
Love your videos I'm down the dual sport rabbit hole looking to dump my old bike and get another one with more zip, so yeah… You're pretty much the channel to feed this particular addiction😂

Great video and info 👌🏻
Did you have the g2 throttle tamer on for the testing ?
Yes I did
Just installed the GET unit programmed by Slavens. Installed easily and normally makes the bike run great. It was 110f today and when the bike got hot running in deep sand it stalled out a lot more. I need to get my phone out and see about adding some fuel when it's really hot out.
Just got a 450rl! Whoop whoop! Anyone know how the GET compares to the ‘550 performance’ stock ECU flash for $200?
B a g love the gear riding gear you have in your adventure video I'm like 270 hard to find good light duty stuff what brand if you don't mind is that look like grayish camouflage very nice thank you
Yes, it's greyish camo. It's a Shift Camo 3/4 sleeve mesh jersey. It's very old, and I am not sure they make it anymore or maybe they replaced it with something else The pants are the Moose Qualifier.
Right on in the 90s early 2000s I wore local boys gear the baggie stuff was all over the place hard to find nowadays still have my jersey look n good out there thanks for your reply
Great video, long time get user but gonna try the AIM for my EX450F, will be using it for MX and High-Speed single track. Have the GET on my 22 500, 3rd one I have used in 2 and 4 strokes, this 22 is an amazing machine with this get and graves, it's like it's an electric bike torque-wise, just amazing. Will try this AIM from Mike (Taco) and see how it compares on my 450.
You will love it
Considering ditching my CRF250L for the 450RL & have watched a lot of vids on 450 problems & mods.
Why didn't you test the JD Jetting Power Surge Tuner? I generally don't ever see anything about this one.
I wasnt provided one for this test The JD doesnt have the same features although it gets the job done Maybe in the near future
@@BornAGoon
I bought one for my rl recently and have only messed with it a couple times so far, and so far I haven't noticed any change at all. Doesn't feel any different and the on / off switch feel from idle is still there. So far not happy with it.
26:10 When riding trails on my 450, I do tend to short-shift at 9k, instead of 10k... lol
Soooo - for those of us with Vortex’s from when they were the only option on the market - sell and get the GET???
If you have the money I would but if your Vortex is working well keep it I had a good experience with the Vortex but the GET was just better. You can also try out the GET and send it back if you dont like it and if you do you can sell the Vortex easily.
I am building a 23 KTM EXC-F 500 Dual Sport and trying to figure out which Tuner to purchase. I expected the GET to win from all I have seen and read. You talked about GET almost figures out what you need. To be clear it DOES NOT dynamically change settings to adapt to what you need. Correct?! You have to change the map for different attributes???
Just call taco moto tell them what bike you have and exhaust and they will flash it for you When you get just plug it in and go You don’t have to adjust anything it’s good as a plug and play
Hello Doug. Great comparison. I have a 2023 450RL that I would like to leave the exhaust system alone for now. I like to keep as quiet as possible when woods riding. So in saying that , would you still recommend your shootout winner for a mostly stock bike that can be lugged around in tight stuff and still perform well on flat out roads and highway ? Thanks for any info.
Yes hands down I would use the Athena GET I have them both and 5 months later and 6 different exhaust combos etc I havent changed my mind The GET stays in my bike 95% of the time now it runs so good with it
@@BornAGoon What is the best highway MPG you have gotten with the GET? Just wondering what I could expect if I went on a weekend trip. Thanks a lot!
The wifi usually works but it failed on me twice Think it had something to do with the location I put it in
Correctly noted. The Wi-Fi link is between the bike and the phone and besides downloading the app on initial set up no internet connection is needed
The most informative hour ever! Now you have choices for the honda. And depending on you skill and wants you have a path. I wander why honda makes such a bad map in the first place? A premium bike that is not fully exposed to its potential at this price point is sad.
Can we get a 2023 update?
Sounds like the AIm has lean spots, and surging.. So many have had big issues with the Green Gets. Sounds like you got lucky.
What big issues
So when you receive the get ecu from taco Moto, it’s already programmed with their custom maps and all you got to do is plug and play?, if I order the one without Wi-Fi that is?
Yes its plug and play I havent had to use the wifi for any adjustments yet and I now ride without it If you can afford it go for it but if not its not a big deal
@@BornAGoon I currently have the aim and I’m just wondering if I should upgrade, I do mainly street riding with wheeling and high speeds (top end)
@@BornAGoon between the 2 maps which one would you say is the most power all through out?
@@landondupont3220 Map 1 does Its full power Map 2 is a detunned Enduro mode
@@landondupont3220 If you have the latest AiM map I would keep that I think those issued after May 2022 have the new map If not Taco will remap them for free I been running the AiM all week with the Graves and FMF exhausts That low end beef is addicting
Is EJK no longer in the game?
some people still use those but these ECUs are so much more advanced and user friendly
Would a GET on a ktm 450 make it a ridoculous amount of power? These are already quick bikes
Is there any power numbers? Anything?
I think leaving the stock exhaust is important. An aftermarket header and exhaust that takes away most of the backpressure is a mistake.
I dont find the backpressure loss that bad The difference in performance is worth it on the exhaust Thanks for watching
Stock exhaust is good for sound abatement but not for power
Can you still do good wheelies with the Athena GET like you said with the AIM i want what’s best all around but I mainly just wheelie and do street riding but want something I can trust in any kind of situation
Yes you can easily wheelie with the GET
If I order the Athena get for a stock exhaust I can change it in the settings later for a full gravesTi ?
Yes you can but if you can wait a month the new GET will be available I just got the pre launch version for final testing I think its way better
Great video. Helped me choose which ECU to buy for my flameout 450! But, please say “uh-crop’-of-itch”. Not “akra-poe-vick”. Made in Slovenia. Many Slovenian last names end in “vic”. Ivanovic, popovic, akrapovic. The vic is pronounced vitch. Thanks!!
Hey everyone. I'm looking to get the FMF Q4 and Mega Bomb header for my 2020 CRF 450L but I'm not sure what part numbers to order. Do I order a Q4 for a 2020 CRF 450X and a mega bomb header for a 2020 CRF 450RX?
There should be a specific part for the 450rl I would also look into the graves full titanium if you haven’t already
Thanks
I want the IAM
Good choice you will love it
Still waiting for an automotive style ecu that can be connected to a laptop so you can see what the O2 sensor is reading and use that to tune fuel/air mixture. Seat of the pants tuning is too subjective and possibly destructive.
me too
Power Commander is the closest thing, so far. Not an ECU, unfortunately.
This is possible using the AiM Taipan ECU and if you also have the Data Logger the Solo 2 DL and it's expansion module the LCU-ONE (AFR unit)
bougth me an AIM with HB Switch and User Bridge Connector to PC May.22. Had a Lot of Software issues. AIM is just learning. at first All Maps were eaquzal !!
For Launch and Traction Control enabled they want additional Money!!!!
At August 22 right before Your Video they launched a new Base Map with different Named Maps. Currently mine is back at AIM right now the second time for Software Repair of HB Switch after update to 0.0.14. AIM feels like a green Banana. I didn't get any Feedback from AIM. it doesn't feel like working together. Your Comment about the Usability of HB Switch while riding with gloves is extremly super friendly. i would suggest to to use something else than AIM
Where did you get the AiM from? I havent had any issues
@@BornAGoon A german Dealer / honda Racing team. that wasn't familiar with the Stuff them selves. today they stated to Refound the Money. so i will spend some extra money for the GET Unit.

I run the Vortex (only choice out)and I’ve experienced the engine death about 5 times now I’m really disappointed.Do you know off hand can mike Tacomoto remap the vortex?
Keep up the great content
I dont know if he can re map them Give them a call and see if they can help
Call XPR Engines in Murrieta, CA, and Chad & Leah Braun can assist you with remapping the Vortex - it costs $300.00 for re-mapping, but he is one of the best in the business as he sponsors a few factory teams in engine building and mapping.

450x.. With about a grand to burn…. Put on exhaust or ECU ?
Ecu no doubt Exhaust won’t do much the ecu turns it into a whole different bike
The Vortex's have problems. With the first, my bike would not start. With the second, it starts but has cold start problems and takes 4 to 5 times before starting. Be careful
Ive heard some batches were defective Maybe worth an upgrade
It took them a couple of years to iron out KTM 500 maps.
I had cold starting issues with my Vortex until I quit pulling the choke for cold starts. If I pull the choke it’ll die 4-5 times before it will idle. If I don’t pull the choke and just hit the starter it starts and idles every time.
all of that about max 3hp difference. I am wondering who can actually feel 2% difference
Hopefully your Taco moto discount comes through for you video.
It’s not uncommon in in the world of social media nor do we hide the fact that companies loan or discount components for testing and evaluation and Doug disclosed these facts where applicable
I didn’t get a discount I bought the AiM with my own money at full price Taco was nice enough to let me borrow the other ecu units for the test
Anyone want to buy my vortex or jd power tuner? PM if so
Can we put a 450X ecu on the RL ? if not, why the fuck not???? Joe dirt out.....
technically you could if you re-pinned the plug on the ecu because the pin layout is different. From what I've read the 450x experiences the same issues the L and RL so no real point in running an X ecu.
Joe Dirt you know that doesnt work Might as well ask why is a tree good? Why’s a sunset good? Why are boobs good?

Why do people buy these things?
The bike or the ecu?
@@BornAGoon the ECU. But you pretty much answered that question towards the end of the video.
If I had to replace my ECM on a new bike, I would never buy it

@@lancerambert The bike has to emissions nationwide. Honda is not going to make a model specifically to meet CA emissions specs. Therefore the same ECM is on all of their bikes. If it runs shitty in CA, it’s going to run shitty everywhere.
