Assassin's Creed: Rogue - The Ultimate Critique - Luke Stephens

  • Assassin's Creed: Rogue is a standout title for many reasons. While it tried flipping the formula on its head by giving you control of a Templar, it fails to stick the landing. Partly because the game released alongside Unity and partly because it was essentially an expansion to Black Flag, it simply did not stand out and was forgotten as a result. Today we look at the game and franchise and we'll try to determine what the game meant for Assassins Creed moving forward.

    I remember I was walking past a civilian who was sitting down and I pressed square to see if Shay hits his fists together like Connor did in ac3 cause I used to love walking around doing that and feelings like a tough guy so when I did it in this game. Shay kicked the civilian in the face instantly and I died laughing because it was so unnecessarily brutal and I didn't even get a warning about shay not killing civilians

      Because Shay is a Templar

    • @meurer13daniel
      @meurer13daniel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +127

      That's the most confusing part about Rogue.
      Shay left the Assassin's because the Creed was sacrificing innocent civilians for their behalf, but you can kill them in the gameplay without the warning. The only thing that happens is that you gain a notority and bounty hunters come after you. But that's about it, it's a normal thing to expect when you kill civilians, btw.
      Also, saying he is a Templar is not a good excuse. Again, he left the order because innocents were dying.

    • @shriyut
      @shriyut 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe it's the power of their truest belief in their cause. Both passionately believe they're in the right and the other is wrong. This theme is present in every single conversation that you have as a member of the Creed or a Templar. It's something really wonderful, and perhaps the most important reason why subconsciously everyone's so involved and intrigued in the story despite a lot of missteps.
      Sorry for the late reply 😂

  • @LionofDawn

    If Rogue is a "cash grab". Then i guess so is Brotherhood and Revelations.
    Rogue was not perfect. But you missed the whole point of its story. It wasn't supposed to give you a perspective of the Templars and how their ways of going about things are wrong but understandable. It was about showing how different eras, different times, are what shapes people. In this time the Assassin's are arrogant idiots, and many of them no different than thugs as they make life difficult for people in New York. And meanwhile the Templars were the heroes. Because the times demanded this of them. They still wanted power underneath it all. As shown in the ending how Haytham commands Shay to recover the box.
    This basically shows us that it is the individual that defines the Templar Order, or the Assassin's Creed. They represent an equilibrium: Peace comes at a cost, and too much peace can bring chaos because people demand freedom. And too much freedom destroys peace.

    • @titanicww2345
      @titanicww2345 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Yeah actually Shay was more a pragmatist. The Assassins disrespected and disregarded his assertions on the whole artifacts being dangerous. The Templar's saved him and believed him right off the bat. It is funny in Ezio trilogy the Assassins worked with mercenaries and thieves who hurt the people just the player was not shown the harm. Rogue lays it all out to the players, the Assassins are terrorists(Kessegowase burning Albany, Ezio starting a riot in the Constantinople Arsenal, ) who support chemical weapons( New York), extortion and smuggling ( everywhere). Also they show preference to France for some reason.

    I think playing Rogue before Black Flag really changed my perspective of this game. Rogue was and still is a personal favorite of mine. Shay's experience of switching sides seemed so intense that I was engrossed in the storyline and loved it past the very end. I understand that it's kind of a cookie cutter mold for an Assassin's Creed title within the dialogue switched around, but that wasn't enough to turn me away from the game overall. I also thought that Rogue took full advantage of the last gen consoles' abilities. In the end, what was your overall opinion of Shay's character? He was a major contributor to my personal love for the game. Great critique!

    I don't agree with this critique to be honest.
    I love Rogue because for me, it fixes everything that made me hate Black Flag. It's more in line, feeling and gameplay wise, with AC3 than Black Flag, even though it's basically all the systems from Black Flag upgraded in one way of another (minus the diving bell sections)
    And it's really possible to really like Black Flag and to hate Rogue.
    There is no correlation between the two to be honest when it comes to showing "mathematically" if a person likes "a, they will also like b", because Black Flag and Rogue are vastly different in quite a lot of aspects

    What I liked about Rogue is the way they approached islands, in BF they boasted about having the largest map yet, but every island location is just a small zone, yes you have all of Cuba, but you can actually go to like 3 spots in there, while in Rogue (Mostly in the River Valley) you get to a town and you can cross to the other side of the island, or even explore the whole island, you get a full frontier with many locations

In fact I think the only lackluster thing about this game is the main story was so short. But i think it took everything from black flag and improved on it. The graphic improvement is really good. The environments are fantastically done! I still do like black flag a bit better just cause I found the story a bit better but I would still put this one number 3 behind Black flag and brotherhood. Hey Luke, I personally, contradictory to your verdict, thought that the narrative was the least of Rogue's accomplishments. In my honest opinion Rogue's true value comes from its improvement of Black flag's more lackluster elements such as truly appreciable visual variety between environments, enjoyable "stalking" missions, a mood setting background score, bespoke fortresses and finely tuned naval combat. Rogue was more "fun" (as hard as that term is to objectively define) than Black Flag as I experienced it and I often recommend it to friends as the Black Flag experience they don't know they need. If anything, it was the unconvincing screenplay and abruptly shifting character motivations in Rogue that held it back imo. Anyway, great review as always, keep up the good work!

  • @LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor
    @LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'll be honest here. Of all the narratives each Assassin's Creed game had, Black Flag's was the one that stood out the most, at least to me. Whereas most of the other games revolved around the main character being an Assassin motivated by justice or revenge against the Templars (Altair, Ezio, Connor, Arno, etc.), Black Flag revolved around the main character being a privateer motivated by money, wealth, and easy-living, and he didn't consider joining the Assassins until the very climax of the game.
    To me, this is actually an interesting change of narrative pace, and as a result, it makes Edward Kenway stand out as a unique protagonist of the franchise. Compared to Altair, Ezio, Connor, and Arno, who felt like characters whose characterizations served the story, Edward felt like a character who made the story serve him. The other protagonists were written to be brave and noble, whereas Edward was written to be human.
    Make no mistake, though. This isn't to take away from how the other protagonists were portrayed in their respective games. I'll always have a special place for Ezio in my heart, and I did enjoy Connor's arc throughout AC3. However, when you look at their stories from a bare-bones lens, you have to admit that they do rely on some narrative tropes that are common in most media. Edward, by comparison, doesn't seem to fit that mold, and that's a good thing.

You say that this game missed the opportunity to flesh out the templars and that you could just change the title "templar" for "assassin", and/or vice versa, and still have the same result; you criticize that there are no major differences in the way assassins and templars operate. I believe that that right there is actually the point of the game. To explicitly show that the difference between both organizations is, in essence, only ideological rather than operational. Who knows, maybe I'm giving the writers too much credit for their laziness, but I am convinced that is what they were trying to show us. That in the end, the rivalry between Assassins and Templars boils down to a difference in opinion, and that the way both organizations work is the same; there is no right or wrong side here. Both organizations are working for the good on mankind and societies, as inspired by their beliefs. And both organizations have been full of both good and bad people throughout history. It makes so much sense to me.

    One detail I love about Rogue is when entering a restricted area when Assassin's normally pull up their Hoods, Shay pulls up the Collar of his Trench Coat (I don't know if his Templar Outfit is actually a Trench Coat but I call it that simple because it's so damn cool) also I love the Outfits in the game, best in the series in my opinion, personal favs are Assassin Killer, Templar Outfit, Templar Master, and Sir James Gunn armor.

    Hey man! Great analysis you have here! I am a big fan of the Assassin's Creed Series and I really enjoy high analysis game videos so your channel has definitely been a welcome surprise for me when I came across it! I do feel, however, that you tend to spend good chunks of the video merely summarizing the events of the game, which is kind of pointless to some degree since most people who have seen the video have already played the game anyway. I know that the focus of the analysis is the story (and when you add on story that is not from the game- such as the excellent story prologue of Edward Kenway's life that you put in your AC4 critique- it makes it more worthwhile to watch) so I just personally feel that minimizing the emphasis on plot summary may make the video flow better and my make it more relevant for those who have already played the game. Hope you continue what you're doing as it is a very entertaining watch indeed for a fan such as myself :)))

    I played AC4 for around 300 hours. So I liked it a wee bit! However I played rogue for over 450 hours. It is superior in one way only...they don't keep shoving those damn ease dropping missions through a heavily populated fort down your throat. AC4 was better graphically as well as mechanically, BUT Rogue has better game-play. I didn't like the Ass Creed part of Black flag, so this was a welcome change.
    On a side note- Because of AC4 I went back and played, 3, Syndicate as well as revelations. These games brought me into the series. I am thankful for that.

    With this game and AC4 (with DLC) launching together as one game (60 dollars) on the Switch , I am trying to learn a bit from both. Which should I play first guys? Rogue or Black Flag? I know Rogue was the latter to come but I am just wondering if playing it chronologically may affect my experience negatively . Perhaps playing Rogue (the "worst one" for the majority) and they BF might be better? I want some feedback please :)

I dislike the pirate theme, I dislike the overabundance on ship missions and ship combat and I hate that all the assassin missions are "follow guy, don't be detected" and Rogue combines what worked in 3 with what worked in 4 and I don't even mind the ship stuff in that one as it wasn't so much ship stuff^^

      Much of the same case for me. I didn't even play black flag because of the pirate theme. Not a fan of the ships aswell but there wasn't a lot of it in rogue and it was not annoying. What sticks to me the most is the connection between rogue and unity. Goddam I loved it when I recognized the palace. One question though, have I missed out on much by not playing black flag? Since I have the oppurtunity to play it, because I got it on the ubi birthday shit.

    I don't think we played the same game. I feel that AC as a series can have bland adversaries. It's like you said, with Rouge it feels like we swapped bad guys in red with bad guys in blue and it was more of the same. Im sure the budget for this game was a lot smaller than a main line title and for that reason they could have taken some risks. It's dissapointing that they took so few.

    Damn, I need to reinstall Rogue and start up another new game again man, I remember that I loved this version just because it had this darker Free Masonry/Illuminati/Templar feel to it, and you were basically an assassin who hunted other assassins which is the dopest sh*t I ever heard of lol as far as making a gamer feel like an elite badass. Then most of the map felt like Alaska or something with its cold harsh Skyrim like setting, and I was fully sold on this game after I played that first artifact retrieval mission that had you entering a small city to grab some underground secret artifact or something, which ends up triggering the world's craziest booby trap as the entire damn city starts collapsing in on itself. You end up sprinting and jumping from crumbling building to building trying to outrun all the collapsing mayhem, and eventually the street below you heaves upwards, cracks apart, and reveals a hidden hallway/space below ground level with black and white tiled floors all the way down the hallway that you then need to sprint all the way down etc. etc. (black and white tiling is a nod to Free Masonry in the game). I love conspiracy theory type documentaries online about Free Masons, Illuminati, and all that jazz so once the game started including those vibes I was like yuuuuuup this is my jam fo sho. Never beat this game though, so I def. need to revisit this bad boy.

  • @ElectroTherapyFTSoul

    I haven't finished the series, but I will go ahead and say that the Americas Saga (including Liberation) is my favorite era in the series. Yes, they expanded the god-awful optional objectives bullshit that irks my 100% playthrough obsession, but these games have one thing that make them superior to me over the others: all of that nature! I'm more of a loner nature person than I am a bustling city guy, so I prefer to dick around in forests, swamps, and caverns than twisting city streets. I often come to Assassin's Creed to blow off steam and muck around the world rather than stress myself out in main story mission. These four games delivered lots of wilderness exploration for me, so I'm super happy with them.
    You might not be surprised that Revelations is my least favorite. Constantinople is basically all city from one end of the map to the other with barely any break. It's too claustrophobic. I frequently played the Desmond and Clay journeys, not just because I liked them, but because I NEEDED a break in scenery that Constantinople couldn't provide. (Rome made MUCH better use of the singular overworld map; it's probably my favorite Ezio game, too, because of it.)

    i agree with your comment that if you enjoy Black Flag youll enjoy Rogue, my only issue is; that Black Flag was available on current gen consoles while Rogue was only on PS3 and X360. so while they did add some extra new new mechanics it felt really bad to have the series going backwards in terms of smoothness and graphics. eventually il get around to replaying Rogue but its never been a priority.

  • @Killicon93
    @Killicon93 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I recently started replaying rogue and I found out that the game gets an amazing layer of challenge by removing the minimap, instead having to rely almost entirely on the in-game graphics.
    The eagle vision became a useful tool on keeping tabs on enemies and targets, that wasn't overpowered since it would un-tag enemies who strayed too far.
    With Black Flag I tried to up the challenge by playing without the SSI (Screen Space Indicator), thinking that it was what made the game too easy. But it broke the game in some ways (ship weakspots for example).
    But back then I naively didn't consider that the mini-map was showing me too much information. A prime example being that it would show me whichever way enemies were facing, essentially working like a superior soliton radar, but without a lore reason being there.
    Or when sailing in storms I would rather look at my minimap to spot water devils or rogue waves.
    Disregarding the artistry of hundreds of artists working on the game.
    Mini-maps are a disgrace to gaming.
    They make players look away from amazing artistry, worsen the modern population's navigational retardation, make players dumber and make game designers lazy.

    The Assassin’s aren’t terrorists, and the AC game’s give a reason to side with them over the Templar’s.
    The game’s show corruption in some of the Templar’s.
    There is some nuance, but generally AC is more pro assassin.
    I think it’s an interesting idea to see things from the Templar’s perspective, though Rogue doesn’t always do the best jobs and given how they are shown in other games there’s only so much they can do.

    I remember being grateful for this title as I hadnt leveled up to a current gen console yet. U might even call this the last traditional AC gameW/all of the best mechanics roled into one last ride. The gorgeous but abandoned Unity& underappreciated Syndicate appear as experiments before abandoning the formula almost entirely. Origins&Odyssy feel more like spiritual successors than prequels. And when is it, I wonder, that Ubisoft finally reveals that yeah, weve been playing as the villains the whole time or that both orders are totally fuct?

I get why they made it so he went with the templars because it’d be easy to give him the “cool buddies” almost every game has done so far, but I feel they could still pull off supporting roles that were on neither side also.

    I strongly disagree. I think in some ways Rogue is better than AC4
    Not in any grand ways but in the subtle ones.
    Because the factions are interchangeable and the assassins are willing to kill innocent to further their cause it adds to the moral grayness.
    The Templar role change adds meaning to feature bloat. AC games are stuffed
    with features.
    As a lone wolf assassin they made no sense, but as a templar working to gentrify a nation and build an empire. The money gathering, base libration, property renovation stuff works in that narative.
    It humonized the templars a bit, they often felt like endless leagues of menichal bad guys, but in rouge there is subtle stuff about how the templars want to build a prosperous colony with laws and rules and safety.

  • @BRISTOLFILMERS
    @BRISTOLFILMERS ปีที่แล้ว

    The main critique of rogue is that it didnt focus on being a templar enough. Thats its biggest set back, it had a great opportunity to explore thinking on the otherside of thr coin. I was expecting cool templar bases and inductions, more questionable actions, a bittersweet ending. What we got was essentially the creed and the templars swapped, if we werent told we were a templar we mever would have known. Imagine the new templar game mechanics it could have explored as well.

  • @CMTechnica

    Personal favorite game in the series. Favorite character I can sympathize with, a different story, one that's about revenge, yet not on the level of Watch Dogs.
    One thing I disagree with is the story: you said it's the same as other games, and sure, it's similar, but not the same. Much as I like the Templars, overall, meaning every Templar group from the series, I don't sympathize with them. Shay really only joined the Templars because the Assassins decided that hundreds of lives, knowing they'd die, was better than letting the enemy get the artifact, and Shay disagreed with that
