You need the stage 1 ecu upgrade/tune first for any real power gain. This takes you to around 275hp/420nm. Once you've done that, yes go for a 3" turbo back exhaust which ensures there's no restriction on the exhaust side. Ideally you want a slimline mid box so the car doesn't drone at freeway speeds. Or if you have the cash, get an active exhaust i.e. actuated flap in the rear box for the best of both worlds. Air intake you can do any time, it'll sound better, but this is forced induction so really it's not going to give you any extra hp/nm which once again is governed by the tune, maybe like 1hp but who cares. The next restriction is the stock intercooler, which you'll need (plus a 3.5 bar fpr) to go up to a stage 3 ecu map/tune. This takes you to 295hp/450nm on a pre 2006 phase 2 95 Aero, or 300hp/450nm on a dame phase 3. Here you are very close to the limit for the stock pistons (circa 310-320hp, yes some people run stock pistons at 350hp but in most saab tuner's opinion this is super risky and only a matter of time before you cook a piston). So if you want to go higher in power you are looking at a lot of work and money: Pistons, Turbo, fuel pump, injectors, clutch, gearbox strengthening, custom map the list goes on and on. A lot of people go for a post '94 b234r 9000 Aero T5 engine or bottom end with T7 head at this point, if you can find one (these pistons can take a lot more power). With the right turbo you can easily run 450+ hp but you still have to invest a lot of cash in turbo, injectors, clutch etc etc. As a daily driver, a lot of people say the stage 3 is the sweet spot for these cars. Ps, get some decent suspension such as bilstein shocks and eibach springs, to really put the car on rails in the corners. And a weak spot for these cars, the brakes. Because these cars are heavy, really you need 4 pots or better for the best stopping power. Even the single pot 345mm brakes from the 9-3 can only do so much, although some DS2500 brake pads (expensive) will help you out quite a way. Also run the car on the highest octane / best AKI fuel you can get, for obvious reasons.

A chip tune is the quickest way gain any meaningful performance. Opening the intake gives you a better sound, but you probably loses a few horsepowers there by doing so. Changing the exhaust won't give any power gain either unless you're deleting the CAT. I will focus on getting a tune, and upgrading suspension and bushings to improve handling.
Any tips on attaching the pcv oil trap hose on? I got a 2005 saab 9-5 and i cant get new hose to clip on. It has the 2 grey tabs on the connector and its suppose to slide in but im having a really tough time getting it on.
Its easier to get a grip if you goin under the car and reach. i usually cut the old hose out of way to make life easier. the reinstallation is a breeze from there.

I don't got much money so you think I'd be fine doing something like a Maptun Stage 1 tune, Muffler/(maybe resonator? Stupid CA exhaust law) delete, and a simple drop in K&N filter (just for more turbo sounds)?
Oooohh lots to think about. Thanks Kyle. It all seems much more expensive down in New Zealand. Will check it out though - as letting an engine breathe is definitely the way to go. I see you have your hands full with the light blue convertible. But remain hopeful & optimistic the black convertible with the bad engine will find its way onto your channel!! 🤙🤙🤙
Don't put a after market air filter on the 9-5 please. Just get a diesel snorkel they are good for about 500hp. You already have one if your car is from 2005 or later
I will say im on maptun stage 2 and tbh deleting my cats and giving my 2002 9-5 aero a full exhaust was all i needed the chassis is so rigid you dont need anything other than some wider tires and some wheel spacers after an exhaust and a tune, just hit the dyno making 272 wheel and 311ft/lbs of torque

Im a mechanical engineer, not a mechanic, but i specialise in modifying cars specifically drag and drift cars, and tuning is my bread and butter, everything you said about tuning is the stuff i say to customers who just dont have a clue what im doing to their car and arent capable of understanding if i explain it... So we give them buzzwords, like stage 1 2 3 😂 ... I found this because im currentlybuilding a saab 9-3 turbo 2.0l 2005 model.. and i want to find guys who have actually tuned a saab , like really tuned it, and not just uploaded a base map from the net that isnt even mapped off my own engine, thus wont match efficiency's as my cars rings and valves and cams will not have identical wear or lift or compression or valve spring pressure, or even the same timing to a fraction of a degree, our timing wont be identical due to stretch and wear, So anyone telling you, get a stage something tune uploaded !!... has no idea what tuning even is, and has no place telling people to tune a car 😂.. Why are saab guys like this? I have watched every tuning vid on saabs and not one has actually put a haltec or motec or fueltech ecu or similar and none have done actual dyno tuning and fuel/timing map building, or tuned a map on a dyno and flashed that fuel/timing map onto the saab ecu.. Not one has done this.... Why? Are all saab guys just 100% mechanically illiterate? Are they dodgy bodgy people who cut corners? Or are they purists that dont want anything changed? Please explain this too me... Also im happy to answer actually mechanical/tuning enquiries if any of you saab guys are interested in doing it properly and understanding actual tuning... please answer me!!.. i really need to know.. Oh and im about to put a haltec ecu on my saab so i can control the engine and accessories100% independent, and run aftermarket electronics like subaru or gm throttlebodies and so forth, my saab will be stock parts with a haltec ecu at first, and i will get over 300hp atw as it is factory, might just need fuel pressure regulator upgrade maybe injectors, but ill see where they both max out first... Give me intel, and ill give you my intel... especially if you have swapped in an aftermarket ecu and dyno tuned your saab please... ❤❤❤
My ‘99 9-3 has a hole in the pipe from manifold to the cat. I don’t wanna put $300 for new cat since I only paid under a grand for the car. How do I do a cat delete and what do I do with the 02 sensor? Any links? Whole damn car needs a new exhaust.
I have a 06 9⁵ and planning to upgrade to a stage 1. I have an extra ECU on hand and also a tech 2 clone. What are the steps in upgrading. Do I have to marry the spare ECU to the car before sending off ECU to tuner or can it be tuned just as is.

Hi Kyle, If you could do a tune to a 2011 9-3 2.0 turbo would that make it preferable to your 9-5? Or is there a reason you prefer the 9-5? I like them both, preferring the power of the 9-5. But if I had more power from the 9-3, I prefer the newness of the 9-3 and better seeming reliability scores on kbb and us news. If your answer is the 9-5, which one 2005 or 2007 and why? Thanks! I have a Volvo V50 I like very much but always wished I had a Saab since I was a teen. Just worry about their reliability compared to the Volvo which will go a million miles with no turbo.
Drove a stock 2.3 9-5 previously, and now have a Viggen that was setup already so the difference is amazing. She is St3 with Genuinesaab basically throwing the book at her. injectors, pump, exhaust, tune, LSD, shortshifter, bracing, sways, but still totally stock intake. You have to feather throttle all the way through 1st and 2nd, or she just spins them into a bam bam bam wheel-hopping dash-rattling mess. She will break both fronts loose in second at any speed up to 45mph with just a roll-on the pedal, with no clutch pedal input. Still thinking about an intake, but it is really amazing as it sits, and breathes great, pulling hard all the way to 6k rev limit. Pulls so much harder than my 08 Aero 9-3. Can't wait to run the 1/4 with it. That being said, you could save a bit by skipping the intake piping upgrades until you want to go past st3, by which time you will want to save up for transmissions... XD Love these cars

Yeah i know it dosent add HP unless you make a tune. In Sweden we call that a stage 2 Tune, that is changing the stock downpipe for a 3 inch downpipe and change the catalysator to a race/sport catalysator and add a tuning software to it. Probbaly the same in the states. Just changing the complete exhaust would only give a little more throttle response, and also lets the engine breath more which lowers exhaust pressure and temperatures, which then gives headroom for more HP (and then you would need a tune aswell). Changing the intake dosent add HP on a stock engine. A much better mod is to change the stock intercooler for a performance one, as the stock one is not quite enough for the 250 hp aero. That difference you will notice, especially if you put on a stage 1 tune.

Those should b my priority list to make it a perfect daily lol
Once the clutch goes, all the fun stuff are gonna get fixed - dog legs and subframe bushings.
By the time COVID is over, my 04 aero should b running like new!
amazing work! keep it up!
Always start with suspension, then brake and lastly more power.
3:38 you'r welcome
I have done 2 out of 3 om my 9-5 Aero. Exhaust (3 inch, sport cat back) and tuning (stage 1, ethanol konv.) Runs like hell 😁👍 Good tips that really changes the car! (In a good way)
amazing!
Just bought mine
I don't got much money so you think I'd be fine doing something like a Maptun Stage 1 tune, Muffler/(maybe resonator? Stupid CA exhaust law) delete, and a simple drop in K&N filter (just for more turbo sounds)?
yes! sorry that your in CA 😂
Kyle mate I see that Alpine unit in that 9-5 and she just screams for the proper dash bezel kit. ConnectS2 CT24SA07 :)
haha i know! i gotta get one
If you live in warmer climates a bigger intercooler would be ideal for combating heat soak.
Whoah I want that Alpine system. Kyle do you have a vid on it or which unit that is?
Don't put a after market air filter on the 9-5 please. Just get a diesel snorkel they are good for about 500hp. You already have one if your car is from 2005 or later
were would you find the snorkel
Mine have 220.000 miles and the engine it's like new.Everthing depends how the owner treats the car.
like the convertible at the end I have one with 32.000 miles on the clock she's beautiful
Had Saab’s years ago… looking to get another! Where is everyone getting parts these days??
hi i just go a 95 2002 when the head light are off and i hit the brakes the head lights come on is that normal
no, sounds like a faulty switch somewhere..perhaps the brake switch
I will say im on maptun stage 2 and tbh deleting my cats and giving my 2002 9-5 aero a full exhaust was all i needed the chassis is so rigid you dont need anything other than some wider tires and some wheel spacers after an exhaust and a tune, just hit the dyno making 272 wheel and 311ft/lbs of torque
Random question I have a radio code on my radio currently. How can I clear it.
tech2
Tech2, takes 2 minutes
Thanks!!
F
Took me months to find someone with the saab software for tech2 in Toronto area (saab club of Canada if anyone needs)
I just missed out on a deal for a 2008 face- lifted 9-3 cabrio, but might've been a blessing in disguise, the 2.0T intake valve issue has me concerned. I guess it's not a problem with the 2.8? Thx for your content👍
pleasure! no 2.8 wont have those issue!
Mine has about 195k miles (2009 9-3 sedan) 2.0T) and still cold starts just fine, to my knowlage the issue is only on cold starts until the engine warms up then you don’t notice it? Definitely something to watch out for though. I wouldn’t buy one without listening to a cold start on it.
Now this should not work. I have a 2003 185 Bhp 9-5. Manual. My friend is a Saab specialist and had a spare 230bhp Aero auto ecu. We put in my motor did the tech 2 majic and hey presto...the car drives great with no over boost and lots more power. The turbo is a 6000 mile GT17 but I will swap that out for a Td04 asap. Strange thing is that many people say these ecus are not interchangeable.
Kyle, I like your channel. Ive had varios Saabs. Right now I have one, its a 2003 convertible and its my toy. If someday I need a certain part, could I get it through you? I speak Spanish but my wife translates for me.
.
I find lots of euro sites for parts.
I use RockAuto dot com cause they ship to Canada.
where are you located in NJ , i have a tech 2 with tis 2000 if you need help with the vert.
Do you know how to turn off daytime running lights?
@@mdcEVO8 did you figure out your DRLs?
@@samipetkannen2226 Hey Sami, No I did not ever get the DLRs done. I live in Jackson out near Great Adventure and I work in New Brunswick but I could also travel.
I tried going to a SAAB shop in Cherry Hill a few years ago hoping he could do it but I think I may have brought the older outdated instruction, Pre-Tech2 Update.
I just Restored my headlights and put in fresh Xenon bulbs and did the Ice Block tail light swap so getting the lights to work how I want would be a great finish to all that.
2004-2005 Saab 9-5 Aero 🏁🏁🏁🥇👍
Im a mechanical engineer, not a mechanic, but i specialise in modifying cars specifically drag and drift cars, and tuning is my bread and butter, everything you said about tuning is the stuff i say to customers who just dont have a clue what im doing to their car and arent capable of understanding if i explain it...
So we give them buzzwords, like stage 1 2 3 😂 ...
I found this because im currentlybuilding a saab 9-3 turbo 2.0l 2005 model.. and i want to find guys who have actually tuned a saab , like really tuned it, and not just uploaded a base map from the net that isnt even mapped off my own engine, thus wont match efficiency's as my cars rings and valves and cams will not have identical wear or lift or compression or valve spring pressure, or even the same timing to a fraction of a degree, our timing wont be identical due to stretch and wear,
So anyone telling you, get a stage something tune uploaded !!... has no idea what tuning even is, and has no place telling people to tune a car 😂..
I know this is old but what size pipe for the intake
My ‘99 9-3 has a hole in the pipe from manifold to the cat. I don’t wanna put $300 for new cat since I only paid under a grand for the car. How do I do a cat delete and what do I do with the 02 sensor? Any links? Whole damn car needs a new exhaust.
I have a 06 9⁵ and planning to upgrade to a stage 1. I have an extra ECU on hand and also a tech 2 clone. What are the steps in upgrading. Do I have to marry the spare ECU to the car before sending off ECU to tuner or can it be tuned just as is.
Hey Kyle how are you? I have 2002 and 2003 Saab 9-5 linear, key fobs are the exact same fcc id number both fobs look identical. Trying to buy a replacement for both cars but the one depicted online for 2003 has a groove or line up the middle of the key and mine has no groove. So my question to you is do you think my 2003 has a 2002 ignition switch??? And should I buy two 2002 fobs?
I'm really curious how do you like your new audio system and wondering the model of yours. And after yoy install that, are you still able to use night panel?
I used alpine. Night panel doesn't include radio. But the radio has its own power off options!
@@KylePancis oh no. I love night panel of saab. I'm trying to find a solution to have back up camera and Bluetooth on my 2003 saab 95 without changing too much from oem.
@@kingkong2598 have you solved it?
I am buying a 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero tomorrow as a second daily/tinker toy. What do I need to know?? please feel free to be specific if there is anything you recommend i immediately change or upgrade or whatever.
Hey brother, I have an 07 9⁵ Aero. I want to add a few little things for performance. What do you think I need for a stage 1 or stage 2?
I have a 2005 9-5 Saab 2.2tid 120hp and 280nm, so it's not Aero. If i upgrade the exaust and intake like you said in the video, do you think i will get an extra 20hp?
At 14 fahrenheit (-10 °C) every single car should "start right up". My 9-5 starts to struggle after -25°C (-13 fahrenheit)
You got a blue vert aero
XD Love these cars
hahaha that viggen sounds incredible. how many miles on it?
@@KylePancis 85k. Dropped the pan and did the o-rings 2k ago per your video. They were trashed. Gained 7 psi oil at idle. Thx!
@@MassiveTrackHunter thats amazing!! saving your saab ahead of time haha
@@KylePancis yep. It was dropping down to 10-12psi at idle, even at this mileage and even though all bearings plastigauged within a hair of new-spec. Just with those two o-rings it now stays around 20psi at idle, for hours. Your videos tipped me off to that issue. Thanks!
Next will be an oil pump check as I have heard the housing tends to get worn and even damaged, contributing to this issue.
@@MassiveTrackHunter yes! Easy job to do as well
You know how to grab my attention
Hi Kyle, thinking about opening up my intake on my 2006 95. Do you worry about water with the intake being exposed and close to ground level?
i wonder the same thing about mine, i cut the top of the airbox off and use it as a water shield on mine
@@_lowered.p7b do you feel confident driving with it like that? Or a better question would be would you do it again if given a second chance?
@@user-bx5zi1mv5t I haven't noticed the filter getting wet at all but I also don't drive it for long distances, I put a small pipe to get the filter to sit lower and actually in the box and drilled a few small holes for water to drain if it did get in the box
@@_lowered.p7b ahh i see. Thanks for responding. I appreciate it
I just hope I can get mine ruining. It's been a little frustrating but I haven't given up yet.
You live in USA?
@@MrTeatreeoil yes, in Tennessee
Saab’s always blow so much smoke on the cold starts lol
Brother you have no idea, I had an 01 9-5 Aero with coolant in the oil. Looked like it would roll coal on any start haha
I just got told they don't make they any more and hard to find parts
Whats the info for the intake?
K&n open air filter
Mines blue
Boring cars often go really far. Because there's no flava, no xtra, just works, uses plenty of petrol and are not sporty and are driven from ahb nby enthusiastic owners. And once you mess with it and deviate from factory state, you wreck it
Turbo is shot bro. Trust me, i'm a Swede.
Intake upgrade is a waste of money. The stock 9-5 intake is built for up to 425hp
What years?
30hp by changing exhaust? 🤣🤣🤣
I lost you in the first five minutes. You repeat a lot.
