  • This is a fan requested comparison between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mike Mentzer. Normally I would say Mike is not in Arnold's league, but we will be using the 1980 Olympia versions of each man.

I remember that Olympia vividly. I owned a bodybuilding gym at the time. The controversy was not so much that Arnold beat Mentzer. It was that Arnold won, PERIOD! Most thought that there were 3 or 4 competitors that should have beaten him. The 2nd controversy was that Mentzer placed 5th! That was outrageous!

Mentzer actually tied for 4th in points (280) with Boyer Coe. I met Mike in early 1979 (8 months before the Olympia) and he thought he'd beat Zane (placing 2nd). Then in 1980 out of the woodwork comes Arnold promoting the Conan movie. Bogus in 1980 and then bogus for his friend Franco in 1981.

@Azathoth Hastur abs and calves beat mentzer? You got to be kidding. The only thing arnold had over Mike was chest and rear double bicep pose. Mike crushed him in every thing else. Let's be real here. And being tall doesn't mean anything, lets not insult people's intelligence. Arnold is awesome, no doubt but to objectively say that he beat Mike blows me away. I've watched all the videos and most who were there will tell you, Mike won. Hand down. They didn't want him to win because he was an iconoclast and at the time that wasn't good for the promotion of the sport.

Bro you can’t expect people not to be upset when the contest was clearly rigged before it started. Mentzer and others took the whole year off to train for a contest that was no contest at all. Fans booed Arnold’s speech and left the opera house yelling “rigged”. Then the ifbb had the ordasity to rub our faces in it again by showing us they can do what they want and give it to Arnold’s mate the very next year. What a class act the ifbb are.

I disagree with your final point. It was the IFBB that was behaving unprofessionally. All of the judges were Arnold's friends. They let him in the contest with only two weeks notice, a violation of the rules that was not extended to anyone else. The other competitors were given no advance notice that they would be facing a returning Arnold. Also from the judges perspective they were probably conflicted with the fact that Arnold brought more attention to bodybuilding and made more money for the Weiders than anyone has or ever will. What would be the ramifications if the famous Arnold lost an Olympia? Arnold should have done a guest positing routine, perhaps to the soundtrack of Conan (the movie he was trying to promote), and it would have made everyone happy. This Olympia was filmed to be televised, but after the controversial ending they decided not to air it. So the IFBB shot themselves in the foot in a way. It does hurt a competitor's rep to lose so it was understandable why some of them would boycott the next year's contest. How else could they protest the judges clear willingness to violate their own rules? It turned out to be a wise decision as the next year's contest was even more overtly rigged to favor Franco Colombu.

Bill Pearl was scheduled to be a judge at the 1980 Mr. Olympia. He withdrew himself from the judging Panel, because he had helped Chris Dickerson prepare himself for the show. After the show, when asked by CBS, where he would have placed Arnold. Pearl, quickly replied without hesitation "Fifth". Months later, Arnold goes on to be a Box office smash starting with "Conan the Barbarian ." Then on October 7, 2003 Governor of California. The next day after the 1980 Mr. Olympia show, CBS immediately cancelled it's contract to film the 1981 Mr. Olympia show, and never televised another Olympia again. Wow. To think this was over 40 years ago. I was a young 20 year old and was at this Olympia. I just felt privileged to see all these bodybuilders in the flesh. Tom Platz’s legs still amaze me. Whether it was me seeing Arnold in the flesh for the first time or the way he strutted around on the stage like he owned it (poor Roger Walker copped a hard time off Arnold standing next to him during the compulsory posing. Arnold would deliberately do the wrong pose until all eyes were on him, then do the correct pose after everyone else was fatigued), but I went home thinking he was the best on the night. I’m glad I wasn’t a judge.

The thing about the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest is that it was held during a time where bodybuilding was aiming to be very mainstream. Contracts were being made in the industry, bodybuilders were going to television and Arnold Schwarzenegger was the face of the sport, to the eye of the average american citizen, at least. Not only was Arnold the star who had been the winner 6 times in a row, he was also the upcoming hollywood star that wanted to make it big in the screen. That being said, at the time, Arnold was considered a mediocre actor, with his first critics being very harsh on him, so his muscles, his physique was his main product to sell him as good choice for starring in a movie. So you take that, and you have the sport's biggest name making a comeback during a time he wanted to get big in hollywood: how would it look for Arnold if he lost the 1980 Olympia? Why would anyone in hollywood cast him, a mediocre actor, with a strongh accent whose main thing were his muscles and those muscles didn't even win the Mr. Olympia contest? It would be a disaster for Arnold's career. Then, you add that to the fact that Arnold and Weider were fierce advocates for high volume training and supplements. That made them very good money, and at the time, with very little information around, people believed it. However, there was one specific individual that defied that. One man that went on the opposite direction and said that you actually needed much less training than Arnold and Weider advocated. Not only that, you didn't need the much talked about supplements the industry was selling. That man was Mike Mentzer, the first bodybuilder to ever earn a perfect score. A 5'8 man that held over 100kg of lean mass on stage, a weight that was only matched by prime Schwarzenegger, a man 6 inches taller. Mike Mentzer said Arnold Schwarzenegger and Weider were wrong and he proved it with his very own physique. Who could argue with that? So then you see, the 1980 Mr Olympia was rigged from the beginning. Not only that, the rigging began in 1979, when Zane, a 5'9 bodybuilder beat Mentzer, who was an inch shorter and 45 pounds heavier. You don't hear much about 1979 because it wasn't as outrageous as 1980, but Mike Mentzer should have won in 1979. They made him second because the guy that dared to challenge the norm in the IFBB could never be awarded. That would be the same as admitting they were wrong. And Weider and Schwarzenegger would never do that. But the people caught on and called them out on that. How could the perfect score, heaviest bodybuilder on stage be second? So, in 1980, they put Mike Mentzer at 4th place, tied with Boyer Coe, so that when people would point out Mentzer should have won, there would be 3 men between him and Schwarzenegger. Mike Mentzer is the true 1980 Mr. Olympia and 1979 Mr. Olympia.

    Great work Mark, very perceptive.
A lot of stuff has been said about the '80 Olympia and videos made.
To really understand what was going on, that contest has to be seen in context.
Think of MotoGp and the dominant years of Marc Marquez 2013-19 inclusively. Race after race, the rest of the field were racing for second place and a paycheck. Then when MM was out through injury (eg 2015), the rest of the field got reinvigorated because they could race for the glory of winning, which after all, is what they were there for.
Many of the guys lined up at the 1980 Olympia, had spent years in placings behind Arnold. Then they had four years without Arnold competing, but only two men had capitalised on Arnold's absence. Others knew their time was running out, and were devastated at the news of Arnold returning. A controversy was built around whether Arnold was out of time to enter, but in truth no one else competing wanted him there!
As for the outcome, judges are selected for their knowledge and impartiality. They are given the best seats in the house. No issues with camera angles etc, the judges can see everything at only a few yards from the competitors.
They said Arnold won in 1980 and that should be decisive.
Nonetheless videos such as this are entertaining viewing! 👍

    • @jaymcbakerk
      @jaymcbakerk 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Except the judges were Arnold’s friends, and they weren’t scoring the contest impartially. Judge Albert Busek was one of Arnold’s oldest and dearest bodybuilding friends. Judge Brendan Ryan was in Arnold’s circle of Australian friends through Paul Graham, who was the local organiser of the 1980 Olympia. And Mits Kawashima and REG PARK FFS….the panel weren’t just friends of Arnold’s, they were some of his closest and most loyal friends

@jaytanner1696 Most conspiracy theories can look convincing if carefully crafted and well presented. Yours is no different. But you have offered no evidence about who the judges were in 1980 or regarding any alleged connection they each might have had with Arnold. Logically, they might have known others on the stage too, so your theory that they were all biased for Arnold over Mentzer is full of holes.
If, for arguments sake, you were right that Mentzer was best, but the judges chose Arnold out of bias, how come Mentzer didn't come second? How do you account for three other guys additional to Arnold, placing ahead of Mentzer?

If Arnold 1974 or Arnold 1975 had shown up, there would have been few critics of this particular contest.
Arnold rarely made big mistakes in dialing in his competition shape, but his one big error was training ( according to Arnold ) for only eight weeks. If he had 18-16 weeks of fine tuning his conditioning, to grow into the show, he could have blown away the competition.

Arnold isn’t known for his back poses. He’s always been known for his chest and biceps. It’s really amazing to see how good his whole backside is in this photo. Even his calves and glutes have distinct muscle bellies that look full and distinct. Mike’s whole back is asymmetrical, undefined, and his glutes and hamstrings look frumpy.

I still prefer Arnold over the others in this Olympia. His symmetry, structure, and asthetics were much better than the others.

Muscle size edge?? What the heck does that even mean? Mike was harder, tiny waist, better vtaper, better symmetry, better poser, etc. He was more muscular, more symmetrical, end of story. The muscle size edge was to Mike. Height don't mean crap in bodybuilding. The only two guys who could match Mike in condition that day were Chris and Boyer and they have just one too many flaws compared to Mike. Zane was smaller and off from 1979 and no way should have finished ahead of Mike.

The sport is called Bodybuilding, not Conditionbuilding.

I definitely disagree about the muscularity comment. Look at the back double pictures. Arnold is out-massing the crap out of Mentzer. The only area where Mike was bigger was in the quads and the gut! Their conditioning were pretty comparable to each other but Arnold has better structure and more size so I would chose Arnie to come out on top.

Where did you get these pics from? Because if they are from the video The Comeback, then those pics are doctored. They actually shrunk Mike in comparison.

@@errrrrr5545 You make an excellent point. The thing is, with genetic predisposition toward heart disease, one is in an especially precarious situation. Life choices become even more important when facing those odds.
