@@yeahsure9759 Read your comment, man. It's completely irrelevant. It's equivalent to saying that the Rock was a better wrestler than John Cena because he was in more movies. Additionally, recordings have been released proving Weider's corruptness in the bodybuilding industry. Also, Arnold was a kiss a** personally meddling with the federation. I'm not saying that Mentzer should have won, but there's many reasons why this very situation is a controversy. In the 1980 competition in particular, Arnold came out of retirement with a poor physique compared to his past self and won. Mentzer was not the only bodybuilder who should have beaten Arnold that day.

I have been a devotee of Arnold and his training philosophy. Now that I've got that out of the way, I believe his best showings were '72,'74, and '75. In 1980, he looked like a shadow of himself. He was in Hollywood shape, but not competition shape. He wasn't ready. He allegedly trained for eight weeks for the contest. This is after a five year retirement. Eight weeks? I don't think so.
He pulled out all the stops, the judges were also good friends of Arnold. I don't recall if he had a had in promotion as well. Let's face it, Mentzer was the best physique that day, not Arnold.

Arnold was a guy who just wanted it all.. He said he was gonna retire after the 1975 Olympia and he should've done so.. It wasn't enough that he was on his way to being a box office Hollywood movie star but he had to come back to the Olympia to and steal the spotlight from the other bodybuilders.. In my opinion he didn't deserve to win the 80 Mr Olympia.. But I would still rather have Arnold's 1980 physique than anybody else's onstage that year just because of his sheer physical size and height.. In many ways he still did look like a true champion despite his condition being off..

I have a picture with Arnold Schwarzenegger. My father, brother and myself played a round of golf with him in Sun Valley Idaho. This was in the summer of 2000 and was completely unplanned and unexpected. My brother and I (15 and 17 years old) were absolutely star struck and could not believe what was happening for the hours that we experienced with Arnold. At the end of it Arnold took a picture with us.
That picture really doesn’t mean anything to be anymore. Arnold has tarnished his legacy so badly that there really isn’t much of anything to respect anymore. He cheated on his wife and betrayed his family. He makes absolutely garbage movies in the last couple decades. He is a complete sellout Hollywood liberal (“screw your freedoms!”). He is a sellout to whoever pays him money (garbage commercials). He is a complete two-face.

Arnold first got his figurative ducks in a row and verified that the judges were all his friends and only then would he announce that he was entering the contest - a day in advance, whereas the rules required a month's advanced notice. He hurled insults at Mike and at Boyer Coe at the competitors' meeting and had to be saved by Ben Weider from getting his clock cleaned. He neglected compulsory poses and that was overlooked by the judges (who, again, were his friends). He had a big screen movie role coming up and entered with full confidence Joe Weider would have too much to gain financially by his success to ever allow him to lose. Face it, if not for Joe Weider's sponsorship early on and Vince Gironda's hands-on tutelage prepping him for competition in the U.S., the name of Arnold wouldn't be much more than a footnote in the sport's history, manipulative bottom-feeder that he is. And unappreciative; when WAS the last time you heard him give Vince Gironda ANY mention, let alone credit?

@@teufelhund53 true enough, what's done is done. What you said is an understatement, though. When only your sponsor (Joe Weider; he wasn't a movie star yet) and your friends the judges (along with gangs of fanboys decades later) see you as the winner - the audience present was erupting in boos - it says something about whoever would consider that a "victory". I was not there myself, but I know what I see when I look over the coverage.

    • @PeterJRaia
      @PeterJRaia 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@Mantastic-ho3vm nothing new that hasn't been rehashed and rebutted. Arnold has lost to Zane (not that I'm saying Frank should've won in '80 as he was coming off an injury and a good way from his best), Chet Yorton, Sergio Olivia of course, and some Iraqi bodybuilder whose name I'm trying to recall. Arnold was big and imposing, and by all accounts had a huge hit to his self esteem when he lost. Hence Joe Weider sending him to Vince Gironda to train to really get in shape.
Mentzer "creating a hype around himself" ? I knew the guy between 1981, and 1991 after he put his demons behind him; it's plain from your assertions you never did. He didn't like what Arnold DID, though yes, I don't think he would like ANYONE who didn't give credit where it's due or manipulative bottom-feeders in general. Look, I like the guy's movies too for the most part, but when it comes to who can be properly said to have won in 1980 and the backstory to the event, no one possessed of good conscience who followed Arnold's path to that platform has grounds to feel good about himself. I compartmentalize his movie (heh ... I will not call it "acting") career from his bodybuilding history, bottom line. The 1980 Mr. O fiasco is all I'm interested in discussing here, and there's a REASON why those who scoff at Arnold being awarded the Sandow that year were either the ones who were present (and booing Arnold) or those who've read and watched video accounts of it, whereas fanboys raised on Conan and the Terminator are, decades later, the ones digging up dirt on Mike and screaming "sour grapes" at him. My own opinion since you're making yours painfully clear is that either Boyer Coe or Chris Dickerson, arguably with Dennis Tinerino in the mix, could've credibly won. Arnold, Mike, Roy Challenger, Roger Walker, and Frank in no particular order after that, which pains me to admit as I've trained with Mike and am a huge fan of Frank's aesthetics. Your disparaging of high intensity training is groundless and ill-founded, and deserving of its own discussion (of which there are many on TH-cam if it interests you). Not going to be dragged far off-topic, not sorry.

@Mantastic-ho3vm it may not have been me who rebutted all the Arnold sycophants, but they have been over the years. It doesn't interest me to do so yet again as I'm as indifferent to the rants of Arnold fans as they are to their hero's amoral conduct. Arnold "won", if you call being gift wrapped & handed to him by Joe & his cronies. He won in the same sense that the last WrestleMania champion did. The "best out of a bad lineup" is your opinion and you need no one's approval to voice it. ONLY your opinion though; not shared by many viewing this video or sounding off in the comments ...or, you know, by the people actually present at that contest.
I don't think we'll find agreement on this. Arnold was, in my opinion this time, neither his own best nor the best on stage that night. One can argue (as we both see) that the same can be said about Mike Mentzer. All things considered, I don't think any OBJECTIVE man can argue who the better (not better promoted, rich, or more popular) PERSON is.
We're at a point of essentially repeating the same talking points with merely different words, so I'd say that's a wrap. Have a good one; you and I are done with this.

Mike should've just forget the pass and share the glory of victory from helping Dorian Yates achieve mass monster that year when he won his first Mr Olympia. That hate and burden he carried plus his prescription killed him

Popularity was the key factor for Arnold which other competitor dont have. Arnold was supposed to be a judge at Olympia 1980 but it turned out that he decided to become a contestant .
The money from the sponsorship essential for any competition like Mr Olympia.

If Arnold only trained 6weeks if he had 6months then he would have been victorious on all accounts. I’m not sided him just stating that he did look pretty dame good for hat short time but Mike looked in peak shape.

Arnold is one of the dirtiest and finest example of abusing people and step on to climb! From his first gf who did everything for him to rest , and the call him the greatest of all time .

The Shock Principle of Arnold Schwarzenegger is for me wasn't effective. Mentzer's approach was more effective to my body type.
