  • To learn more about Mike Mentzer's life, legacy and teachings, please visit: www.hituni.com/about/mike-men...
I’ve had a lot of requests to post the entire video interview that Mike did in 1991, when he had just started his personal training business.
I had originally posted this in two parts about a year ago, but not everyone has seen both parts. So, here is the complete 1991 interview that Mike did in Los Angeles. Among the topics covered are:
    * Training for size versus training for definition
    * Steroids and bodybuilding
    * Dieting to lose body fat
    * Cardiovascular benefits from weight training
    * Training requirements for women and men
    * Do all bodybuilders aspire to be movie stars?
    * How Mike only trained for two hours a week in preparation for the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest
    * The satisfaction Mike derives from passing on his knowledge as a personal trainer
For those wondering what it was like to hang out with Mike and shoot the shit about exercise, nutrition, etc., this video will give you some idea.

If a guy wants to be in the gym every day for two hours and look in the mirror at himself while watching the pump occur second by second then have at it.

Both the guest AND the hosts are full of intelligent and interesting insight, questions, points of view and reflections on reality.
Truth is told here, unflinchingly, openly and objectively.
What a truly GREAT interview, what truly great questions asked by the hosts, and many of the topics and information conveyed and shed light upon are just as relevant and pertinent today as they were back then.
The only exception to this is that the information and advice relating to diet is very narrow, limited and dated, compared to what is known about nutrition today, not just as it applies to muscle building, but as it applies to general health also.

The bluntness of MIke *in the early 90s* about the prevalence of steroid usage, its necessity to compete, and the admission that roid rage is a result of that persons personality and not the drug is so fucking ahead of its time.

This is really informative stuff, Mike was definitely ahead of his time, such intelligent and well-spoken man. Such a shame that the judges for 1980's Olympia screwed him...

  • @edgecenter4

It was around 1980 that I competed in the Mr Minnesota contest. And Mike was the guest poser. The night before, they had a get together which ended up being a Q&A with Mike. The only thing I remember about the Q&A was his response to how much protein you needed. He claimed around 60 grams.. chicken fish, etc. He actually looked normal size in street clothes but when he posed it was way different. He was awesome. And his listed height of 5-8 is probably close. I stood next to him backstage and with no shoes he was a little shorter than I was. And I was 6-0.

IMO Mentzer deserved to win the 1980 Olympia but he got shafted because he criticized Joe Weider's high volume training routines and phony supplements which were a staple of his magazine. Had Mentzer won the Olympia then Weider's entire business empire would have lost credibility and Joe wasn't going to let that happen. No doubt Mike's health decline was at least in part caused by Weider destroying his bodybuilding career.

      Completely agree
That's why he not only didn't let Mike win which he deserved..but also made him 5th..
He deared Mike even in top 3 can catch a lot of attention and be a threat

And him taking the time to explain to you in this manner like these ideas and theories on this vid. One cannot deny Mike's way of training as being the most efficient, most common sense approach of all in the world of body building. He is about telling the truth rather than marketing a lie to the public in return for profiting off of those lies.
For that reason he was shunned by many. Sad to see him pass at such at such a young age. R.I.P. Mike Mentzer.

I will say this it is said 2 sets is better
But those studies don’t account for the slowness of reps he did the 4-2-4 is insanely good with a tricep extension where I Usally can do 20 reps I could only do 12 with 4-2-4
