- Ahoy Legends! This week Shauno and I head out to targeted one of the tastiest fish I've ever eaten jigging in 450m! Even though the weather was rough the fishing was red hot with double hook ups and all sorts of deep-sea critters. I then show how to fillet my two best fish of the trip and take them down to chef Julian's house to see which one is the best!

Never had it, I've only gotten back into fish recently after being traumatized by some not very fresh fish as a kid and being turned off it completely. Then I discovered snorkeling a few years ago, followed by spearfishing. Mate blew my mind the difference fresh fish makes. But I'm down in Melb so as yet I've only had flathead, leather jacket, snapper, whiting. The things you're pulling are making me wanna move up north big time.
Never had either. I love fish but being from Maine in the US we focus more on the haddock and lobster. Would love to try these fish some day!
One of the best eating and most versatile fish to cook. We catch heaps of them here in NZ but we call them Bluenose.

Had it before mate but didn't really rate it. I was kind of disappointed as I thought it was a bit 'rubbery'. I did wash the fillets in fresh water which I don't usually do.
I wanna catch some more to give it another try.

I was out on Saturday fishing across the ditch in 480m of water and only caught big Ling no Bluenose or Blue eye as you call them. Did 6 drops and hooked up every time.

Great video. Love your channel. I live in the Azores. I catch alfonsino (Beryx splendens) at a depth around 500 meters (1600 feet) and imperador (Beryx decadactylus) at more than 600 (2000 feet) meters. These fish are all most identical, the imperador has a more rounded head and is the best tasting fish in the sea, it costs the double the price of the other. To catch these fish I use a homemade electric fishing reel witch was made using a motor from a car steering, the line I use is 0.8mm stainless steel wire. I use wire because even at that depth I can feel fish biting as if I used braided line there is no feeling.

Great video Sammy! The Blue Trevally look like what are called Barrelfish off of Florida, the other species I never seen. I’d love to fish your waters someday, so many different species! Congrats and good luck!

Great vid mate, i certainly agree with the chefs call on toothfish, hands down top fish in my books too. Spice things up on the jig. Throw hooks at both ends of the jig. Makes life interesting if ya get the doublè haha

Our version of that red fish is the toro snapper. Better than queen probably, and that’s a statement. Very few couple little super red very deep types of fish that outdo queen.

Hi! Im from Madeira Island in Portugal.
Last week I went jigging at a depth of 750 meters, I caught 2 alfonsino, one was attacked by a 10kg squid and came with it. Congrats
That's unreal. I often catch flathead in waters 40-70 metres in Bass Strait which, at certain times of the year get attacked by squid but, the biggest squid are not quite 1kg. I love it when it happens, two for the price of one. However, sometimes the squid will chew a whole in the flathead fillet - small price to pay. It hasn't happened for a while but with summer fast approaching it wont be long before it does.

Awesome video Sammy, quick question. Why don't you use hooks on the bottom. That decrease the chances of hooks pulling since the jig doesn't swing around if the bottom hooks catch the side of the fish? It also increases your hook up ratio.
Hey mate, the bottom hook dramatically increases your chances of getting snagged. Which is really bad news in 450m! Just have to take your chances with the top

Try just cranking when you hook up. Pumping tend to open up the hook holes (especially when using such heavy jigs) resulting in more lost fish.

probably wrong but im pretty sure your close, i think its forward and reverse for the props. matt watson has one on his stabicraft and it means you don't have to keep going into the cabin to manoeuvre the boat

Even if I love to fish, There are not that many fish I enjoy to eat.
I usually live by the expression "Fish is fish and meat is food"
But there are a few fish I do like to eat even if they are very few and I would love to taste those fish you caught here to see what I think about them.
When I fish, I eat the ones I like eating, but by far most of the time I either give away what I catch or just release them.
I think you would very much enjoy these ones! They are so delicious!
Most of the time I prefer to fish with baits on circle hooks when fishing deep.
The chances for losing the fish are so much less than when jigging.
I am also getting to old to fish with heavy jigs for many hours.
It is hard enough work to bring the fish up.
It's still debatable ... fishing V's 4wd..

I believe they call those barrelfish in the Florida Keys.
These ones are a slightly different species to the barrel fish. Closely related though 👌👌
