Biting midges are most active under calm conditions. They are most prevalent around dawn and dusk, but may continue to bite through the night and during overcast days. Biting midge commonly breed around the edge of water bodies, with the adult female laying her eggs in places like damp soil, moist decaying leaf material and muddy, sandy or vegetated substrates. Emergence of adult biting midge is associated with the new and full moon phases, especially for midge species breeding in (intertidal) coastal areas. The adults can live for several days to months depending on the species.

The videos you out together are great and thanks as I sit in a hospital bed I need the excitement. A few years back I captured a number of yellow eyed mullet here in NZ which is the same species as you have and identified their food sources as no one had done that before. Sand flies, kelp files and sand hoppers convert the cellose found in beach cast seaweed into protein. Protein is eventual for all species and at night as the tide moves into beach cast seaweed you will see a number of fish species feeding on the maggots of these species of fly's. Fly's are the beginning of the marine food chain and those who use seaweed on their gardens are impacting on marine life.

Sandflies are frustrating, but they are important to the fields of medicine and anthropology. Only the females bite, but because they feed on blood they carry vast amounts of biological data from the area they habitate that studying them can unlock the secrets of the environment around them.
If you want to be less appetising to the little vampires you can take vitamin b tablets a week or so leading up to your trip, and you can try adding aome eucalyptus oil into your rinse cycle with your clothing, the smell deters both sandflies and mosquitoes.

@PelagicPursuit89 in terms of their purpose in 'the grand scheme of things', they're pretty much just here to transfer pathogens between other life forms, and be eaten by amphibians, fish, and other small insect eating animals. Think of them as little virus couriers that look like a delicious fish taco to trout and frogs.

He talks about it in the “21” minute section of the vid. However, I’ve tried looking for it on Google and the rod, “Nomad Seacore All Around 40-65 Spin Rod” could not be found. Nomad does not have a Seacore Offshore spinning rod in 40-65 lb range. They do have a Seacore Slow Jigging rod 40-65 lb but that’s not what he was using.

Sand flies are a by product of politicians there just so annoying and they wont go away. they prey on the public and actually do nothing just take small bites of anything they can.. Anyway another great video. You should try up in Hills inlet as great looking structure up in there on high tide but as you know once your in there its a wait for the next high tide if you you dont get out quick. Great stuff and epic fights love it

What role do sandflies play in nature
    ChatGPT
Sandflies play a role in nature primarily as both prey and predators. As larvae, they feed on organic matter in soil, contributing to nutrient cycling. As adults, they serve as prey for various insectivorous animals and birds, helping to sustain those populations. Additionally, some species of sandflies are predators of other small insects, helping to regulate their populations in ecosystems.

Sand flies exist on Earth primarily due to two reasons:
Suitable Environment: Sand flies thrive in warm, humid environments with moist soil. These conditions allow them to breed and lay their eggs in damp places near decaying organic matter, which their larvae feed on. This makes tropical and subtropical regions ideal for sand flies, but they can also be found in temperate areas with similar conditions. Sand flies can be a nuisance with their bites, they also play a role in the ecosystem as decomposers (through their larvae) and as part of the food chain for some predators. The End. and I hate them too lol

    • @mungbean84

Sandflies are biting midges or noseeums. Though I guess most of what you mention is also true, it would be a cloud to carry anything in particular away. We have horse flies, but they are called march flies, especially here in QLD.

like you very much. It is quite a surprise that you are playing catch with the fish. I don't have such a good reel like you. You can see my channel in this account. I am a poor person from Kerala in India. You won't get here for a penny with a local fish rod and a fish reel. A lot of money is worth paying here. I had to get an 8000 model Salt water spinning reel. It was enough to get the daiwa aird. Give your channel giveaway that way. Kerala and India have a huge TH-cam audience that you don't know about. If you give me a giveaway and put the video on your channel. 10 million subscribers in India may have been received. I will also post a video. It would be nice if you could courier it.
