Many years ago when I was a young teenager I went out on a tourist fishing boat from Weymouth and caught what can only be described as a plethora of big fat pouting. Nobody else on the boat wanted them so I took all the biggest, fattest ones in two carrier bags, and the skipper had the rest for crab and lobster bait. I was on a holiday camp-site at the time and had too many fish for my family BBQ, so I filleted the rest and gave them to my campsite neighbours. Those fish went down really well in what became a communal seafood and wine BBQ party on the holiday camp-site hosted impromptu by my (recently) late father. Pouting are not really the best fish to eat, but they're passable, and those ones in that situation and company became gold.
My dad worked in England for a while... then when he came back to Portugal he said he ain't never goin back there, he always says that the weather is always horrible and always raining , but I disagree, I see your videos and I have to say I'm in love with the views, and the weather looks fine for the most part haha! Hello John, I must say you have an enthusiastic manner to fishing that I have lost, I am now 80 yrs old, and do not know anyone who is an enthusiastic angler younger than 40 yrs, mainly because lack of fish combined with the cost of boat angling, so older anglers no longer take their sons/daughters boat fishing, but you are perhaps able to reach this niche market.

@@TheFishLocker you certainly did. I heard a theory on why dolphins swim at the bow of a boat like that. It said that the underwater bow wave from a boat (especially ships) allows them to be boosted forward with hardly an effort and apparently they do this “for fun” 🐬
John what a way to start the day with the dolphins..it's like "good morning Mate!" Thanks for the tips, the lessons, and another great watch. Hope all is well.
I really enjoy your videos. My family were fishermen in Great Yarmouth and other places towards Cromer for a couple of hundred years. They were Royal Navy, longshoremen, sailing and steam drifter men and beachmen who made their living fishing and salvaging the many ships that went aground or wrecked on Scroby Sands and other banks around Yarmouth Roads. The beachmen saved the wrecked sailors lives too obviously. One of my relatives was killed when the Beaumont (lifeboat) turned turtle at Caister around 1900. My great grandfather captained a drifter up until he was in his 80's but went blind and had to give it all up, eventually dying in an air raid on Yarmouth at the age of 96 in 1941. My dad and my uncle went to sea to fish in their early teens. With all of that sea-faring history in my family, I've never been able to understand why I get so bloody seasick! I'd never be able to do anything except hang over the side in the chop you were in! Great Video!
@@TheFishLocker It's strange but I've been in very life-threatening situations (one of which has left me permanently disabled) and I'd far rather go through them again (except the one which left me in a wheelchair of course!) than face 24 hrs of honking my ring up!
A hard day's fishing but you got one decent fish, and of course a dogfish, the channel trade mark. Wreck fishing at times just seems like an easy way to loose expensive tackle. Enjoyed watching you from my armchair!
Ling !! By far my fav. Not seeing so many at Mo but then not much fishing possible due to really crap weather !! End of April looking better (fingers crossed) !
Well that was a very interesting video to watch John. If nothing else it showed that persistency pays off in the end. It was not a great day for fishing but because you hung in there you did catch fish, end of story. Through sheer persistency you did land a target fish for the day in that GOOD size Ling which yielded some really nice fillets. Great patience, great video, great educational content. Well done mate, cheers to all of you, Don from South Aust.

Great video again John..tough day but a great ling for your perseverance.. shame about the nets makes me wonder how much of our stuff is on the ocean floor...I actually don't mind pouting for fish cakes but they're full of some kind of parasitic worm..I left a couple in the sink one night and the amount of worms that was bundled together out of the fish was unbelievable... I was "knocking together" rigs for fluke, a.k.a. summer flounder all afternoon which looked a good deal like your single drop wrecking rigs. I put my rubber squids on opposite sides of the to your way, pointy bit pointing upstream from the hook. I understand that doing that helps the bait from helicoptering. Your way certainly looks more festive.
Haha. Both ways have their merits. 👍🏻
Hard work and perseverance pays off🤙
That’s how it goes. 👍🏻🎣

Have you ever had a cook-up with the fresh caught pilchards, they are delicious fresh on a BBQ I'd imagine Spargos, would have a few recipes 😋
We have done a mackerel and herring video, have you seen it?
Yeah, was that the one with the oats, covering the Herring?
Must get around to getting my Mackrell out of the freezer.
Say hi to Spargo from me.
John I have a wooden rolling pin which i use to wrap the braid when it snags, few wraps and it saves your fingers
Wearing gloves gives you far far more control and also doesn’t risk damaging the braid - or your wife’s rolling pin.
Work very well for me ,never damaged the braid and very safe when snagged on a fast current……wife still hasn’t realized I took the rolling pin 😂
