  • Hey guys! Octane Restorations here. Got a fun video today, Fixing stuck hydraulic valve lifters or hydraulic valve adjusters on a 1987-2000 Honda Goldwing. This Motorcycle had ZERO compression on all 6 cylinders, and we fixed it! Thank you for watching the video, check out the youtube for other motorcycle and small engine related stuff! Thanks for watching!

    This is great. I think we have something in common. I have quite few my self. 1100, 1200, 1500, and the 1800. I don’t care which one I am riding, I am amazed how great they all are in there own design. I have done quite a bit of work to my 1500 also. I never messed with the lifters thou. I am really enjoying your videos. I have learned new things from you already. Thanks so much for sharing. From Cincinnati, Ohio

      Thank you for the kind words! I love the goldwings too, any year! I have a 1000, 1100, 3 1500s, and looking to add a 1200 and 1800 to the collection this year. They are all amazing especially for their year made respectively. This was my first time doing all of the lifters out of necessity, but all and all not very bad. Thank you again for watching and commenting! I really appreciate the support!

    Thank you for the confidence to proceed with my motorcycle. We corresponded on Facebook. I’m ordering a compression gauge so I have one more piece of kit in my tool collection.
    My bike was diagnosed with collapsed lifters, though I don’t know if that is the same as stuck lifters. I’m hoping once I open it up it will be apparent why the lifters aren’t working on one cylinder. I’m also hoping if need be I can order new lifters if they are worse than stuck.
    The motorcycle has had multiple owners so who knows what kind neglect it has suffered from. Thanks again for putting together this video. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

      Hey Hans! Glad to see you made it! I was really surprised at the harbor freight's compression gauge accuracy. I am guessing that if they did not tear down the motorcycle to visually see them there is a good chance they are stuck! Either way should still be fixable! That is the problem with these, some people don't take care of them sadly. Wish they would though. And thanks for watching! Let me know how it turns out or if you have any questions. One thing I did not show on camera was using an air compressor with a blow gun attached with a rubber tip and blowed inside both of the holes. Might help if they are collapsed!

      @@octanerestorations , on my Christmas wish list is a link to the compression gauge from Harbor Freight. I just have the write up from the mechanic who diagnosed the collapsed lifters. One cylinder showed no compression and one was really low, like 60lbs. The motorcycle ran fine when I took possession of it, but almost immediately after starting dragging a cylinder. With 6 cylinders it’s hardly noticeable at driving RPM’s, but idle is readily apparent. I’m busy traveling until March (snow bird) but will tear into it this spring. So don’t be sad if you don’t hear from me for some time. I’m chasing away my northern winter blues in search of sun and warmer climates.

    • @octanerestorations
      @octanerestorations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HansGyswyt Then I believe it has a good chance that it is just stuck! I had a honda sabre V65 that lost 2 out of 4 cylinders via ignition coil dying, and it would still run the speed limit. Love my hondas! And can't blame you there! Stay warm!

    Just a little advise , the pressing lifter full of oil its not good idea ! You should drain the lifters at first and pumped them sunked in kerosine.

    • @octanerestorations
      @octanerestorations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried! These were completely stuck and it would not drain. I soaked some of these for 24 hours and it still wasn't enough to loosen them up! So I had to use the press.

      @@octanerestorations Hi ,they are not stuck ! inside the lifter is small back stop valve preventing loosing pressure during normal work , so look only they are stuck ! For bleeding ,flushing you should pressing the little valve down by using 1.5 mm drill or thiny allen key for relasing pressure from inside.
      Using same metod you should pumped down and up when they completly flooded by kerosine until get realy clean.
      On your way you have cleaned them only partialy but the most important part are still untouched.
      Sorry my ponglish but I hope you can get the point.

      @@qrwayan This clown is giving terrible advice. You are correct on how the stop valve works. Putting these in a vice and cranking them down is likely bending the lifter and or causing huge damage to the inner spring.

      The valve cover gasket it reusable on these! It isn't RTV, it is the actual rubber piece that goes around the edge of the valve cover. You can replace it for piece of mind, but since they are reuseable I reused mine!

    Nice work. But the dropping of parts onto the dirty garage floor is disheartening to watch. I'm sure you can find some cardboard if you don't have a push broom or shop vac. Why didn't you take the time to power wash the bike when you had the fairing pulled of? I don't know about you, but with all of my motorcycle or just about anything mechanical I have to pressure wash before I'll bring it in my garage

    • @octanerestorations

      Most of the pieces are in a plastic tub! Some of them are on the ground, but I plan on cleaning it after. And for this motorcycle I will eventually do a full detail, I just want to make sure it will run before I do any heavy detailing!

If you look in name brand testers the check valves in a different location, these ones have it so all the pressure is stored in the rubber hose so it doesn’t read correctly

    very bad idea / suggestion to compress any hydro part or lifter in a vice. Good chance of damage to the spring in the lifter. You will not find your process in any service manuals. Not good advice and could cause major damage to the engine.

    • @octanerestorations
      @octanerestorations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey John! I mentioned it in my latest video about the one way valve. This is directly from the honda service manual for the GL1500 on page 7-10.
      Attach the Hydraulic Tappet Bleeder to the adjuster, center the bleeder pin, and while holding it upright, COMPRESS and extend the bleeder slowly in a jar filled with kerosene.
      Tool:
      Hydraulic tappet bleeder
      07973-MJOOOOO
      Continue operating the bleeder until there are no air
      bubbles.
      As you saw if you watched the video, I attempted this with kerosene and air and it was not working. I could not compress at all, and decided the next route was the vice. It was buy new hydraulic tappets, or fix these. And the motorcycle runs great now! Thank you for the comment!
