I know this post is old, but I want to say thank you. I bought a 1999 GL 1500 and it needed a few things, and I found out that absolutely no one around me works on them at all, whether it is a Honda dealer or private party. Your instruction videos on the GL 1500 has been a blessing.
For anyone watching just a small tip. Do not use anti-seize (just like Mr. Clifford did not use) if you are using NGK's. NGK has an anti-seize coating already on. This is directly from talking to their tech department. Also, just for completeness, the gap is 0.036 in. and the torque is 12 ft/lb. Awesome video.
Right? I like the informal way he describes stuff and how its to be done. i loose interest when its too tech heavy or delivers too much information not relevant to the task at hand. These are great.
My 93 with over 280,000 miles on it still has the factory plugs, never been tuned, filters have been replaced, runs wonderful. Dealership said "don't mess with it". Gets 42 mpg. Just for the record.
Thanks man! That helped me alot. Worked out perfectly when I changed my plugs today. There is so much bodywork to take off on Goldwings. I appreciate all your GL1500 Goldwing videos.
Glad I watched this prior to attempting to change plugs! I knew I'd have to remove some plastics. It doesn't seem terribly hard but easy to break stuff if you don't know the tricks.
Great videos sir! Thank-you. If you can get your hands on a small tripod to hold your camera still your quality of production would go way up. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
I periodically soak my rubber grommets in transmission fluid. Over the years I've found this tends to keep them from drying out. Easy enough to do. I use one of those small snack baggies, toss em' in, cover em' with the fluid and let em' hang for a day or three and then put em' back on the scoot!
Used your video today Cliff to take mine apart to change plugs. Haven't got new plugs yet, but ready for them. Only thing I did different was I took off the bottom shroud also. Easier to get front piece to come off.
Thanks Clifford. i enjoy your gl1500 stuff. and although I'd make it through most of the maint myself, its nice to have a guy like you give me a nice informal walkthrough the night before i tackle something new. How tough is doing a front progressive spring conversion? I'll be trying that next week. keep the good stuff coming. cheers from Toronto, Canada
i'm having a heck of a time finding my REAR speaker wires, my bike didn't come with rear speakers for some reason. It is a 99 GL1500A do you know where they are?
Cliff, me again. My Wing quit again, have to replace the alternator again. I think you have taken much of your bike apart and I am in the process now changing the alternator. There is a wire from the alternator and goes up into the body behind the reverse gear lever and it plugs in to a block. I cannot get that panel with the reverse lever off. I cannot find what is holding and there is now way I could fit my hand in there to unplug the wire. I have seen a video where the guy just cut the wire and spliced it but I would rather do it the right way. Do you have any information on how to remove the panel with the reverse lever attached ????
Hello Clifford! Thank you for the great advice on working on the GL1500s! I have a question for you about the large lower radiator water hose going to the water pump. On my bike it is touching the center mounting nut for the lower cover and has made a dent in the hose. Is the hose supposed to be touching that nut? I have zip-tied a piece of rubber tubing over the water hose to protect it. Do you have that problem on your machine? Thanks !!
I wonder why it's touching?? Do you have any suggestions of what I can do to fix this problem? Should I replace the hose? I did notice on some of your videos you where having problems fixing your broken plastic pieces. Check out the video from "Plastex Plastic Repair" You can get their stuff on eBay cheep it seems easy to use and it has colors to choose from as well.
I figured this out on my own. Looking for someone who can show me a video on changing old shocks on the rear to both being coil over shocks. Any help on this? I have seen a few of ur videos... and most have been very helpful... Thanks, Jay
Thanks for the video. i followed it and I had no issues. By the way.. can you tell me if you can buy replacement blades for the wind deflectors you have? I snapped one off the other day. Thanks again
Would love one of these bikes but I refuse to buy any bike that is overly difficult to service or clean. I have a Yamaha V-star XVS1300 cruiser. Service times are: Plugs 5 mins. Oil change 10 mins. Air filter replacement 2 mins. Non serviceable drive belt. No timing belts. I really would love the extra weather protection and comfort of a goldwing but I would find it just too stressful come service time and unfortunately, my pockets aren't deep enough to pay someone to do it for me. I wonder how many other riders are like me and wonder how this fear of servicing affects sales.
its more intimidating than difficult. and once you have done it a couple times its almost autonomous. also when your handling hte body parts you can inspect them for cracks and other damages. tune the fit if needed. and also when running wires for aux devices. dont forget the monster wings can run a plethora of electronics, cell phone chargers , multi camera, GPS devices, I have my MP3 player mounted as well playing into the stock stereo through an Aux cable added to the system board. and a simple bluetooth receiver that also shares the aux cable for phone music/videos and even phone calls go through the on bike headset intercoms. I rode cruisers for 43 years, 10kms on my first 83 gl1100 i said, why haven't I been on one of these? its the most comfortable bike i have ever ridden. smooth powerful, forget about hand buzz after some distance. none. I'm not trying to sell you on it, but only sharing my initial thoughts with one that was 38 years old, needed head gaskets done, forks done, rear shocks done, exhaust done and two new tires needed. I took a chance on it for $600 delivered. now its an amazing bike. so good that I said if this gl1100 is this good ...the GL1500 must be even better. I wasn't disappointed.
Good morning mate I am from Brazil and would like to know if it is possible to put a car carburetor in the 1500 goldwing? Same or similar to carburetor weber 2 and 1.6 petrol? Please.
Hi Cliff, my gl 1500se 2000 my reverse when I turn it off the bike is still in reverse and the on and off swith will not shut the bike off, the bike is in N but now you can only shut the bike with the key it's like the polarities have turned around you have to leve it in reverse and turn it off with the is it because the pin broken I can't seem to turn it around. Help! Jean in Nova Scotia
Hi guys. I haven't been on a bike in 20 years. Just bought a 1996 goldwing aspencade. Would like info or video on plastic panels and fairing removal. It will be greatly appreciated with response . Thanks
Clifford, this is off topic but I am hoping you can help me. I have a 98 Wing and I was on a ride yesterday and the bike quit running. It would not turn over. I checked all the fuses and they were all okay. Every once in a while it would start and run for about one minute and die again. The battery was dead but would build up after setting a while. I figured the alternator went out so that was the first thing I checked after charging the battery. The alternator shows it was charging. With the battery charged it starts and runs perfect. I just cannot figure it out so not I do not trust it. If you have any thoughts on this issue I would sure appreciate it.
Cliff, I just wanted to report that after a month of trying to find out what was wrong and found nothing I took the bike for another ride and it did the same thing QUIT RUNNING. I quit right in front of a tire store and the guy was a biker and he came out to help me. I removed the battery and he checked it and told me my new battery had a short in it. This time it also took out the alternator. Replaced battery and alternator and the old girl is running like she used to.
Have a question for you. I have a GL1500 and my brother changed the oil and filter. Next, he wanted to clean the spark plugs. He cleaned the spark plugs with gas, dried them off and put them back in. Started it up and it ran rough and back fires when the throttle is turned. So we tried new spark plugs. With the new spark plugs it is still running rough and back firing. It is in the correct firing order with no crossed lines. The gap was checked and is between .8 - .9 mm. I have no idea what is wrong and it is frustrating.
The bike had been running just fine. It had only been about 30 minutes when I got off of it running around getting the parts needed. So, I don't understand why you say the carburetors. Can you explain that please?
In fact, as of this morning, we cleaned the coil wires to make a better connection with the new spark plugs, cleaned the air filter, and he just pulled up into the driveway with the carburetor cleaner to try and clean the fuel filter. It as almost as if the fuel/air mixture is not right now just because of cleaning off the old spark plugs. But it was running just fine minutes before any of this was done. I should have spent that $85 an hour at the shop.
iwannaapple, your rubber slides inside the Carburetor could be worn or rip. All it takes is a pin hole to them worthless. I've seen a few bikes with similar issues and that usually fixes it. I can't say for sure this will fix your problem, it's a good place to start.
It not that hard, mostly time consuming, you have to off a lot plastics. I've been wanting to make a video for that for awhile now. My bike doesn't need a carb job right now. So far as i know there is no video out there i know of. If your were local i could show you.
I had the Chrome vent piece off the side and noticed I can get to the two spark plugs and it s only four tiny screws but my piece s different then yours
I ride a GL1200 and tge thing I like the least is all the plastic. I have been pitching some of the useless trim as I go. Next summer I'm planning on removing the complete fairing. It is just too hot for mid summer riding. I jave thought about a 1500. I love the 6 cylinder engine. The amount of plastic on the 1500 would drive me nuts though.
Could you lay a towel down at least, so you arent throwing your painted pieces on the concrete and scratching the fk out of them? You're killin me Smalls!
It is not a good idea to put plastics on the bare concrete painted face down, they scratch very easily. Better to lay a cloth down under all area, sheet works well or an old blanket...covers a large area.

Nice job, Cliff. A camera man (woman) would be a help to us. Keep up the good work.

I would love for you to make a video where you take the plan to go off and hold the CV money.
Do you have to do the same process on the other side ? Are there 3 plugs on left and 3 plugs on right side?

Sounds like you need to check your battery. It might be bad, I would have it tested
@@CliffordRice this is a new AGM battery 2 weeks old. I checked all the fuses and connections this really has me baffled
Something is draining the battery, is the only thing I can thing of at the moment.

Camera tripods make excellent camera man.
I have broken several of those “tits” on my side covers. J B Weld works great to re-attach them.
So there is 3 plugs? 2 cylinders to 1 plug?
Thank you very much
Your welcome, hope this helps
It did, just finished doing the plugs, oil change and air filter.
Awesome! Glad I was able to help out. I'm thinking of buying a parts bike and make out other repair videos. If you got any other request let me know.
So just to be clear, are there 3 spark plugs on the side that you were working on and 3 on the other side?. Cuz you only showed one
Wayne Assalaam that should be obvious. Only showed one for example. It's easy to follow plugs wires. The other side is the exact same thing.
Clifford Rice yea it was obvious. Thanks

I had a few Honda motorcycle . I am about to get MY FIRST GOLD WING MOTORCYCLE A 1993 Gl 1500. 74.000 MILES
My 1995 Honda Goldwing will start with the chock on but as soon as I take the chock down does anyone what is happening and how to fix
The carburetors is you problem, most likely need to be rebuilt
There is a idle stop adjuster inside fuel fill compartment, it's possible adjusted to far out. I believe chock has it's own throttle adjustment.
You didn't show what to set plugs need to be set on !!!
Although I checked and I believe that they are set on .036 hope I'm right...
What about the other plugs?
