Empire Strikes Back, might be the best Star Wars movie, but Return of the Jedi, is still my favorite of them all. The whole Luke and Vader, character arc completion/redemption is so damn touching, it always, every time, hits me so damn in the gut. Not to mention, the Luke (destiny) Vader theme, it's so glorious.

Ik everything in the sequels is technically still canon and I hate how Luke is written in the sequels, but that doesn’t mean the amazing character development in the originals never happened. Just watch the originals and don’t watch the sequels man, that’s what I’m doing.
0:50 underrated part imo. I love the chilling music as Vader and Luke fight. Not some full on orchestra song, but just chilling almost creepy like chords just as they continue fighting. It’s awesome
I am 28 years old and I've seen this since I was a kid. I've read a lot of books, seen a lot of movies, but I will always be amazed by this trilogy's characters. This scene is so fucking perfect. Sure you could have a more flashy fight, but you don't need it. You see how much Luke has grown. At the start he only ignited his saber to defend himself. He tries to pull the good out of Vader. He no longer wants to harm anyone. But then Vader tempts him again with the Dark Side, and you can see Luke's face, half in the light, half in the shadow, symbolizing how he could still fall to either side. And then he finally attacks in rage at the mentioning of his sister. But then he beats Vader, cuts off his hand, and realizes that he's following the same path of hatred as his father. He throws away his saber for he knows that fighting like that isn't going to bring him victory, only defeat. He as risen so much above the emperor that Palpatine doesn't even understand it. In 5 minutes we have so much character depth and development that it truly still amazes me after all this time.
Well said. I'll never forget watching it for the first time. The tension in this scene was incredible, I could feel my heart beating faster. And then there was a big shock when Luke refused to fight. It was the first time when I saw a movie where a "good guy" refused to fight a "bad guy". No classic final fight. Instead, we got a beautiful story of sacrifice and redemption. For me it was and still is perfect.
My God the scene where Vader throws the emperor off the rail is so much better when Vader isn't screaming noooo. I remember watching the newest version of it and hearing it for the first time and just questioned why?!?! What makes it great is that when he's looking on you already no Vader feels this is wrong we didn't need to hear him actually say it

@Star Wars Gamer I have it. The only problem I have with that is that Lucasfilm just ripped the theatrical version off a Laserdisc so the quality is crap. We live in an age where they can restore and upscale old Black & White films like It's a Wonderful Life to 4K so it should be easy to give us Theatrical versions of Star Wars on BluRay. But Kathleen Kennedy has said they won't do it because that isn't what George Lucas considered Star Wars anymore.

It was far from a straight question about the theatrical versions, the phrase theatrical version wasn't used, not even original cuts or anything. Also technically speaking they didn't rip it off the laser disc version but rather used the master tape which made the laser disc

I never liked the NOO at all. Would have been better if they got Liam Neeson to reprise his role as Qui-Gon Jinn (by voice) and it goes like this. Qui-Gon begins motivating Vader to save his son and at the scene where the Emporor becomes more violent in torturing Luke (6:46), Qui-Gon says "Anakin, with all the strength you gained from your son, shall we finish this together?" (which alludes to Luke screaming "Father, please help me!") and then before Vader lunges to grab the Emperor, he would say "Yes master" (which indicates that despite his fall to the dark side, he still had respect for Qui-Gon). Everyone should know that aside from Anakin's love for his family (his son after seeing him in pain) being the key element, Qui Gon was the core instrument in his redemption.

My only beef with Harmy's is the close up shots of the Emperor are really dark. Like the deatils on Emperor's face are almost impossible to see and his hood is so dark it's like he's sitting in complete shadow.
Also, the audio that's playing is from Harmy's Despecialized Edition and the Jedi Fury sounds more extended than the Special Edition, but on the part where Luke cuts Vader's hand off, Luke's yell and the Lightsaber crackle when he cuts Vader's hand off, both sounds sound weird in the original. In the special editions Luke's grunt and the Lightsaber crackle came out perfect! 3:51 (LIGHTSABER CRACKLING) (LUKE GRUNTING)
I like the lightsabers from Grindhouse but the rest from Harmy. The hazy core and edge gives it a more mystical aura appearance rather than a colored light bulb. Also the color for the Sith lightsaber is more blood red which I feel is suiting.
The only differences I see are in Quality and Colours. I like how in Grindhouse, Luke's clothes completely merge with the shadow at 0:50 but the footage has some random red shade, which disappears later. The shade change goes the other way in 2011 version but is equally distracting, it also uses a purple lightsaber once but it is not noticeable in real-time. Harmy's does not have this problem and it also has the most intense lightsaber colours. 2006 has the worst quality and no advantages. Overall, I think the other 3 share the 1st place.
So to make this scene scarier for (in a reboot version) Vader's sake, when Vader is looking for Luke, they could do it entirely from Luke's perspective, only appearing when Vader strike first. And he shouldn't yell when attacked because he's mostly a cyborg, it takes away his scariness.
DVD is good color grading wise but not video quality wise. But on the dvd the movies look more neutral, blu rays and even despecialized have bothersome tints.
I kind of like the 2011 Blu-ray version of Return of the Jedi. Because Luke's Lightsaber is completely in a better color. But I'm sure that Vader's Lightsaber in the Blu-ray version still needs more improvement cause his Lightsaber is purple and on the multiple shots where Vader is making a little speech, his Lightsaber is less vibrant and the colors of his Lightsaber blade is changing too much. So Blackout Despecialized should make the Adywan Revisited Edition of Return of the Jedi when the Lightsabers are more vibrant like the prequel trilogy Lightsaber effects and also add more light effects when the Lightsabers are crackling each other and add more special effects too!😊

Cause you know that in the 2004 DVD edition their Lightsabers look very unrealistic without the Bright Light cores on both of their Lightsabers. The 2011 version was actually better here. They added reflective effects from the lightening onto Vader's armor which seeing how it reflects the practical lights on set makes sense that it should also reflect the lightening effects. That is after all an added light source and it looks weird when Vader's suit doesn't reflect it, almost as if it's not really there... One of the few changes that actually works... I know the 2011 version was over all terrible but that doesn't mean remove EVERYTHING they changed. Keep a few things that actually do work better and just get rid of the stupid shit like the giant ass that covers the entire screen so you can't see what's happening, the added musical number that sounded like a dated real world song rather than something that would actually exist in Star Wars, get rid of Hayden Christensen's face... yeah those are the more major problems with the 2011 version that have to go.
No. Hayden is the most recognizable Anakin Skywalker and it was changed for a reason. Since that was the last time he was truly a Jedi and that was his view of his Jedi self. Almost all the changes are for the better in my eyes.
Hayden makes more sense. First that's how he remembers himself as jedi and second Anakin/Darth Vader was 45 years old when he died and the original actor was 78. I know that he got burnt and some people say you age faster when using dark side but still.
I personally love the 2006 Bonus Disc. It's not anamorphic, and is a poor transfer from a Laserdisc, but I'm willing to trade those off. Whenever I watch the original trilogy, I watch the GOUT DVDs. Many people will like a certain version, and that's okay.

I always enjoyed Star Wars and Jedi/Sith more when they were like knights/samurai who would duel and could do a little magic. Now they flip and spin all over the place and can do anything including literally surviving being sucked into the vacuum of space.
The Grindhouse version is the one you would've seen if you walked into a theater in 1983, down to the dirt and scratches from being projected quite a few times. The 2006 Bonus version is the same in theory, but has a lot of digital artifacts caused by poor encoding and bad color grading so it should be avoided. It's also only DVD quality. The Despecialized Edition is an edit of the 2011 Blu-ray to match it as close as possible to the original version, but it's not perfect particularly in color. But if you want to watch the original movie in it's best quality, try the 4K83 project, not featured in this video. It's 4K and it's colors are a perfect match to those you would find in an original print, can be downloaded either with and without DNR depending on your taste (DNR removes the grain and makes it look like a digital movie, like the Blu-ray does), and has no scratches whatsoever.

Harmy's color grading results in Vader losing detail/blending into the background in darker shots. I'm also not sure how I feel about how warm the colors are allowed to get given the environment that they're in.
Very emotional scene! My one nit-pick is the original seems to have color and lighting consistency issues, in some shots the background looks really dark and in others it looks a bit washed-out. Nothing huge, could be just technological limitations at the time. I’m a photographer, I pick up on these things.
I've found myself watching the GOUT a lot more lately. The Despecialized Edition was my go to for a good while. But lately its idiosyncrasies have distracted me. I had the Laser Discs themselves and the GOUT just feels more right even though it's low-res. I'd love to get Project 4k77 and 4k83. But they're darn near impossible to find.
Even though Return of the Jedi is not as good as the other 2 OT movies, Ian nails it in this movie. Every single line he says is awesome. Incredible actor. He even saved The Rise of Skywalker.

Gregg DiStefano it’s a recreation a really good one I recommend it over the grindhouse. I think the dirt is a little bit distracting at times

God Harmy's looks so damn good. The video quality combined with the color correction just makes it look perfect.

3:18 harmy’s despecialized is the best high definition for original theatrical version of Star Wars trilogy.
The GOUT DVD may not have the best quality, but it does have the most accurate color grading imo. Which is why I will always prefer that version.

So Blackout Despecialized should make the Adywan Revisited Edition of Return of the Jedi when the Lightsabers are more vibrant like the prequel trilogy Lightsaber effects and also add more light effects when the Lightsabers are crackling each other and add more special effects too!😊

The 2011 version was actually better here. They added reflective effects from the lightening onto Vader's armor which seeing how it reflects the practical lights on set makes sense that it should also reflect the lightening effects. That is after all an added light source and it looks weird when Vader's suit doesn't reflect it, almost as if it's not really there... One of the few changes that actually works...
I know the 2011 version was over all terrible but that doesn't mean remove EVERYTHING they changed. Keep a few things that actually do work better and just get rid of the stupid shit like the giant ass that covers the entire screen so you can't see what's happening, the added musical number that sounded like a dated real world song rather than something that would actually exist in Star Wars, get rid of Hayden Christensen's face... yeah those are the more major problems with the 2011 version that have to go.
No. Hayden is the most recognizable Anakin Skywalker and it was changed for a reason. Since that was the last time he was truly a Jedi and that was his view of his Jedi self. Almost all the changes are for the better in my eyes.
Hayden makes more sense. First that's how he remembers himself as jedi and second Anakin/Darth Vader was 45 years old when he died and the original actor was 78. I know that he got burnt and some people say you age faster when using dark side but still.

I personally love the 2006 Bonus Disc. It's not anamorphic, and is a poor transfer from a Laserdisc, but I'm willing to trade those off. Whenever I watch the original trilogy, I watch the GOUT DVDs. Many people will like a certain version, and that's okay.

The Grindhouse version is the one you would've seen if you walked into a theater in 1983, down to the dirt and scratches from being projected quite a few times. The 2006 Bonus version is the same in theory, but has a lot of digital artifacts caused by poor encoding and bad color grading so it should be avoided. It's also only DVD quality.
The Despecialized Edition is an edit of the 2011 Blu-ray to match it as close as possible to the original version, but it's not perfect particularly in color.
But if you want to watch the original movie in it's best quality, try the 4K83 project, not featured in this video. It's 4K and it's colors are a perfect match to those you would find in an original print, can be downloaded either with and without DNR depending on your taste (DNR removes the grain and makes it look like a digital movie, like the Blu-ray does), and has no scratches whatsoever.

Harmy's color grading results in Vader losing detail/blending into the background in darker shots. I'm also not sure how I feel about how warm the colors are allowed to get given the environment that they're in.

Very emotional scene! My one nit-pick is the original seems to have color and lighting consistency issues, in some shots the background looks really dark and in others it looks a bit washed-out. Nothing huge, could be just technological limitations at the time. I’m a photographer, I pick up on these things.
I've found myself watching the GOUT a lot more lately. The Despecialized Edition was my go to for a good while. But lately its idiosyncrasies have distracted me. I had the Laser Discs themselves and the GOUT just feels more right even though it's low-res. I'd love to get Project 4k77 and 4k83. But they're darn near impossible to find.

Even though Return of the Jedi is not as good as the other 2 OT movies, Ian nails it in this movie. Every single line he says is awesome. Incredible actor. He even saved The Rise of Skywalker.
