Such a small detail in the Adywan edition I appreciate is the death star starting to fire. Really drives home how close they were to losing.

It has some good details, but the actual visuals are on parr with the shitty 90s cgi of the special editions... (also some of cinematography is really jarring next to the rest of the film)

A bit different in Legends; Tenn Graneet, the master chief gunnery officer of the Death Star, felt extremely guilty over the destruction of Alderaan, and kept repeating "standby" over the intercom, hoping for something to happen that would prevent him from pulling the trigger and killing so many people yet again.

@raven4k998 the planet it is orbiting is a gas giant. Due to its size and heavy atmosphere, it is highly likely a single beam from the Death Star isn't enough to destory it. Even if it was, the Death Star is also next to it. So if they tried blowing up the planet and were successful and the resulting explosion could destroy the moons, then the Death Star is also getting destroyed since it is also nearby.

A final shot of Tarkin is more intense to me than seeing the Death Star begin to fire its lasers, Tarkin is one of the saga's primary antagonists, seeing his steely gaze before his imminent demise is great because we are left to wonder what his last thoughts are. Is he patiently waiting for the Rebel base's destruction? Is he having a brief moment of doubt? Is he excited? Apprehensive? Afraid? It seems an injustice that we are denied our last glimpse into his character.

Watching these scenes back again, I realize I forgot just how professional Vader was in his first appearance. No backstory beyond "He was a Jedi until he turned evil" in a time so early Darth was still his first name. And yet he is a soldier through and through, something that stayed pretty consistent as his character was expanded over the years.

Your perspective will change a lot when you think of it as a movie called "Star Wars". No Episodes or other films.
      - Big Boss is Grand Moff Tarkin, not Vader.
      - Vader supposed to be Tarkin's henchman. Best soilder/commando Tarkin have. Not 2nd in command of Galactic Empire. This is why some random officer mock Vader. And Vader took order from Tarkin to stop choking him. Compare to the sequel, his rank is more like Capt. Phasma. Not Gen.Hux or Kylo Ren.
Story is extremely goofy too. Whole story can be boiled down to some random unimportant guy saw a beautiful princess asked for help. Got horny. Go on an adventure to help her and succeed. And become famous. That's all Star Wars story. Which is quite similar to Mario story.

Not at all. Do you think fighters have the luxury of chatting to each other in the heat of an intense battle? Adywan gives the film what it so desperately deserves. The original never feels threatening in a realistic sense. In fact, he doesn't give it enough. Hopefully when he polishes up ANHR he'll tweak some things that still need improving. I respect what should be kept from the original version, but not the action sequences. CGI should be used sparingly, which is rare these days of course, but in this case it's as justified as the effects for Jurassic Park. If that was done in stop motion (almost was) & then a fan had created an improved CGI version, the purists would still go for the original worse effects simply for the sake of it...

The Death Star can't destroy Yavin itself for two reasons:
1 - The superlaser takes 24 hours to recharge after a complete blast. Even if they could clear Yavin out of the way, that gives the rebels time to evacuate Yavin IV.
2 - Yavin is a gas giant. The chemical reaction caused by the superlaser igniting it would produce a stellar body on par with a supernova, which even the Death Star couldn't withstand. Destroying a gas giant would destroy the station, and even a hit and run would leave no time for a jump to hyperspace. It would be suicide.

In Legends, Blue and Green Squadrons did indeed attack the superlaser dish in an effort to damage it to the point that the _Death Star_ couldn’t fire, or at the very least draw attention away from Red and Gold Squadrons. From my understanding, Blue and Green Squadrons didn’t suffer as many casualties.

You know blends EVEN BETTER to Rogue One in the Revisited version? After Vader captures Leia and returns to the Death Star, when his star destroyer is approaching the Death Star, the Death Star is orbiting a planet very much like Skairf, where Rogue One ends. And it makes perfect sense considering that's the last place the Death Star was at the end of Rogue One, so Vader simply went back there. I truly wonder if John Knoll and/or Gareth Edwards saw Revisited and liked that scene enough to fit Rogue One to it. After all Skarif could have looked very different in Rogue One but didn't.

The 2011 Special Edition is really the Adywan but with Puggo Grande and it's pretty much a perfect blend. I do wish that they didn't add the TIE sequence from Adywan, since they could've easily made it look better. Also, the little extras from Adywan like Yavin Prime and the rest of the starfighters battling in the background, along with the extra X-Wings in the trench makes the battle more consistent lore and timeline-wise. Also, that shot of the Death Star blowing up as it was about to fire reminds me of the stakes in such a chilling way and it's so cool! Nevertheless, this iconic battle and iconic effects will never get old!

The "purist" version of Adywan's edit (which leaves the movie relatively untouched in regards to big changes, i.e., doesn't have things such as the extended battle sequence with the imperial march seen in this video) is the definitive edition of the film for me.
While I respect and understand the need to preserve the original movie and have it as an available option to watch, I couldn't for the life of me watch the movie again without the small tweaks and effects that Adywan adds and that actually makes sense.

I agree. Adywan may have even been more of a closet EU fan than originally thought. But there's nothing wrong with that. Nothings ever gonna be perfect. But on topic, the improvements from a logical perspective definitely work for sure. He added a strain of tension when the additional Ties and the Imperial Anthem played. Even in the background having some Y-Wings take down some fighters so they don't always look like they're just cannon fodder makes even the small things stand out.

The thing I LOVE about Adywan's version is the dogfight in the background. It's kinda stupid that they just sent out 6 beginning fighters hoping it would help. The increased number of fighters really hypes up the scene and shows where all the other X-Wings went. Poor CGI though on the fighters, but hey, it's a fan edit, they didn't STUDY their lives for this.

Besides, they're attacking one of the most heavily fortified space stations in the entire galaxy so casualties are bound to be high.

All it needed was the audio clip of Luke crying for Biggs after he got blasted by Vader.

Adywan version is nice, but it feels like a 'fan-edit'(which it is) instead of how Star Wars is meant to watched to newcomers.
The newly added dog-fightings ruins the pacing, and there's no dialogue to justify it. Especially it drastically reduces the impact of Imperial March from TESB. Not to mention, CGI doesn't match to other special effects. The hologram and the prequelesque technology are extremely video gamy. The ending feels over the top and poor CGI didn't helped.
Minor fixes are really awesome. Like laser color correction is cool, the continuity fix including X-Wing in the trench and the red planet in the background is great. The dogfight in the background adds the intensity. Luke shouting Biggs in his death scene, focusing on Leia's face in Yavin IV, and I even liked the slight additional turret shot. This edit should have remain as minor fix-edit. It seems like he was too overzealous at adding new shit.
I would watch it for repetitive viewings, I wouldn't show it to first timers.

To be honest the CGI is much better than some of the crap that Lucas added officially, so that doesn't bother me, but I agree the extended dogfight didn't work without dialogue, plus the pilots don't look stressed from all the tie-fighters because of the footage he's used.

The reason this whole scene worked so well is that we gave a darn about what happened to the pilots.
They were afraid and acting on training and every time one is lost we have to experience the fear and witness the loss.
It was a brilliant piece of directing.
In the force awakens and rogue one we don't care what happens in the battles and the body count because we don't have to experience the battle in the cockpit along side the pilots.

Just toying with the rebels, about to blow up an entire planet. However, I feel like you can tell just by his silence and expression that deep down, there's that nagging feeling in his mind that the rebels fighting just outside could actually win. That he very might just lose his life in this moment...

The added dogfighting battle fixes a plot hole when Vader says "there are 30 fighters" so I understand the fix for a larger battle, yet it needs to have dialogue, they're just kinda like "yeah whatever a bunch of tie fighters no biggie, keep quiet and fight"
I also liked that he changed the trajectory of Vader's shot when he nails a hit on R2. In original he shoots below Luke's x wing then all of a sudden R2 gets hit. I don't agree with the scene change after this though when Luke says "I've lost R2". He removes C-3P0s emotional reaction. That scene is super important and it feels empty without it. In Star Wars Droids have feelings too.

...then the 1977 original would be the Special Edition.

that brief frame at 9:00 of Red leaders X-wing impacting the surface is so small, but makes the scene make more sense.

I love in the adywan one where the Death Star almost fires but it explodes instead

I really like puggo grande cockpit scenes, makes it feel more natural since they're in space

Adwans's is the best. I love how it exploded just before it was able to fire, makes the scene more intense.

I like the added tie fighter battle but the music starts and ends so abruptly and it doesn't fit with the original music

On yo feet maggot Only because the audio switched from Puggo's edit to Adywan's. In Adywan's edit, the transition from the original soundtrack to Imperial March is almost seamless.

Adywan is by far the best edit for the battle of Yavin. in my opinion.
