Major recommendation for a future video. It's another Courage the Cowardly Dog episode, except this one is one of the most beautifully crafted in setting, music and atmosphere. My recommendation: *Windmill Vandals* by Bill Marsilii.
Yeah, this show really crossed the line a lot with its humor.

I don't think that really crosses the line. It would if they ever showed anyone eating puppies but I think the joke here is that Zim misunderstood what GIR's intentions were... or the misunderstanding of human culture in general.
I'm surprised Doug hasn't seen this show before, it's right up his alley.
He stopped watching cartoons in the late '90s and is only recently catching up on what he missed.

Invader Zim was so ahead of its time
fun fact: this is pretty much the ONLY time Zim's threatening. Sometimes he's shown to be A threat and fairly competent, but this is the only time Zim's given a chance to be SCARY.
What about Enter The Florpus. Where Zim actually did take over the earth. Even if he did lose.
the episode where he torment dibs past with pigs is also a bit scary even if zim dont win. or the waterbaloon fight where he destroys the town from orbit.

At the same time, he is in the show.
In every episode typically for a single frame they show what's known as "Bloody Gir"
This is because originally Gir was meant to have episodes where he went completely insane and wound up covered in blood one way or another.
Nickelodeon executives shut it down saying it would be too much, so in response every episode has at least one Bloody Gir slipped in.

Ah yes, the hunt for the lice queen and Zim having his skin painfully shredded to make a juice to destroy it. You know, for kids!
That, along with "Room with a Moose" were two of the more "out there" episodes. And you have to have some REALLY wierd shit in there to have a Zim episode qualify as "out there" as opposed to it's normal level of WTF.

Its because its use of 3d animation on some episodes causes it to be the most expensive show nickelodeon has ever produced,
And due to "low ratings" nick decides its not worth it and decides to cancelled it

@@TheGoldenDunsparce There are several rumors surrounding the cancellation of this show ranging from the subtle bloody Gir picture in one of the intros for just a split second to Nickelodeon taking too much creative control over Vasquez original vision, to the low ratings and then the really high budget.
I don't think the show had low ratings. I think the only reason the show was cancelled, because like you said, how expensive it was to make and also how dark it was.
@@Asaylum117 There was another thing which i forgot to mention, the show was supposed to target younger demographics but ended up attracting teenagers and young adults instead which could have been another reason why it was hard for them to keep the show going.
After Enter The Florpus came out, it gave me a glimpse of hope that this show could be continued on Netflix, hell, i would even enjoy seeing it on Adult Swim.
There were a ton of rumors. "Bloody Gir" in some frames was another rumored reason.
Given the incompetence of the nurse and the entire school, They probably wouldn't have even noticed that Zim has no organs.
Or given the total indifference everyone shows even if they notice they wouldn’t care.
Incompetence and indifference is the norm, and Dib is a freak for being the one and only human being in the entire planet to have common sense.

The episode that stood out to me was the one about Bloaty Pizza Hog. Actually it's been years since I watched the show but I kinda want to rewatch it now. I did see "Into The Florpus" though and I just smiled because it was like seeing an old friend who you haven't seen for years but they haven't changed at all.
Battle Dib is pretty tame. That was just a spoof of American Gladiator and more fun than anything else.

This isn't what got the show cancelled. What got the show cancelled was that they accidentally spent an entire season's budget on 3D walnuts for a single gag.

Absolutely my favorite episode. You can definitely tell the horror inspiration that episode had.
I remember Nick making them tack on the ending where Iggens is alive and flying out of the elevator, just like them forcing them to add on Keith's line of "You don't like waffles?" at the end of his episode to show he was still alive. Nick apparently something against killing children, I don't know why.

*Fun Fact:* Gaz, Dibb's sister, is voiced by Melissa Fahn who played Ed from _Cowboy Bebop_ .
The only other voice role I know she has done was Dendy from OK K.O Let's Be Heroes.

Invader zim feels like an adult swim animated show scaled back quite a bit.

Dude like half of all of invader zim is super dark. I'd recommend watching the show it's really funny and the dark episodes don't hold back.

@@minimoose3198 Nickelodeon were getting the rating of viewer from the age of 6-11. Obviously this show was for older children and pre-teens. Even as a teen, me and friends would rewatch reruns for its dark humor. Now it's a cult classic with so much merch still being produced.

this episode traumatized me as a child. I remember being scare shitless for days. I remember being too scared to eat. I think we went out to eat the day I had watched it and I remember sitting there thinking Zim was going to come down from the ceiling and steal my organs. That memory too made it so difficult to click on this video.... I haven't seen this episode again since I first watched it as a kid.

There’s an episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy that still haunts me to this day, Little Rock of Horrors. It’s about a meteor that consumes brains and I just remember all these people being lined up to have their brains consumed, all the while a musical number is going on. Scarred me as a kid and this series has made me remember it. Please if anyone else remembers this episode, signal boost this for Doug to see and review!! It’s a creepy episode
Ah, "Little Rock of Horrors" is definitely creepy, but I wound up loving it due to the episode introducing me to the music of Voltaire--the guy who wrote and sang the "Brains" song as the meteor. Votaire's music is awesome.

I remember being a little kid seeing this episode at my grandma's house. I wasn't freaked out, per se, though I remember being pretty disturbed by the boy with the heater. I thought he ate that thing.

Out of all the dark toons you've covered so far, this is one of the few I saw when it first aired, and you really did a great job analyzing it. Also thanks for pointing out the 'goth comics' movement that happened back in the 90's. What with the move more towards webcomics now urging people to read digitally rather than any older physical media, that stuff was already a small, niche movement back then, so it's mostly forgotten nowadays.
Remember, Invader Zim did “Yes, yes I am!” before Phineas and Ferb.

You're not alone: I've literally watched the whole series for the first time during quarantine (years after my friend kept telling me I'd love it............and he's right; it's AWESOME!!!!!!)

I know this wasn't the first Invader Zim episode I watched. But I did binge watch some episodes in my first veiwing of the show, this episode being among them. A friend of my sister's talked me and her friend group into watching it. Reactions were mixed with the friend group, but I adored it. I ended up asking for the dvd collection for my birthday!

The first (pilot) episode of "Invader Zim" is f*ckin brilliant. Twenty-two minutes, and it introduces all the main characters and their basic identities, clearly defines the set-up for the rest of the series, gives us backstory that will actually be *referenced* a dozen or so episodes down the line...and does it all while not sacrificing any humor.

I really love how Invader Zim worked as a show. It was clever, dark, and had the needed humor. It's up there in the top 10 shows I enjoyed growing up. Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life are also in this list. I enjoyed Invader Zim over Spongebob.

Jason Pollitt it’s dark in a real sense which personally I feel gets overlooked. Maybe Doug should also consider the times cartoons got REAL especially the little kids ones
@@Bostonterrierslol 1. It is one of the most popular episodes in that show. It is by no means overlooked. It's one of the only episodes I personally remember pretty clearly.
2. The series just seems to be focusing on dark imagery and not real world fear and themes. Maybe he could do those after this series has run its course a bit.
Helga on the Couch is dark, but not creepy dark
Invader Zim was so well designed and written. It's a tragedy it got canceled before finishing the story they wanted to tell.
"the most horrible xmas ever" is another episode that became quite notorious thanks to berzerk robo-symbiote-suit santa and his jolly boots of doom, and the tentacles and the whole killing a giant space monster santa claus thing didn't sit well with some parents at the time who insisted it had terrified their kids and scarred em for life. its nowhere near as well remembered as dark harvest or some other episodes since it was made right before cancellation and was not run often. nickelodeon was constantly battling with em to change the show despite its popularity so jhonen and the staff kept sneaking protest jokes into the episodes. (like Nick, the kid who lives in a tank in zim's lab constantly getting experimented on. zim had rewired his brain to be painfully happy and cheerful all the time, and the kid has a shirt with the nickelodeon logo on it, he was a very unsubtle recurring jab at them.)
The entire third season never made it to television during initial syndication. It was eventually picked up by the Nicktoons exclusive channel and it ran the completed "lost episodes." The Christmas special did air on regular Nickelodeon but by then Zim had not been relevant for a while.
I love that episode. It was the most messed up christmas special i had seen until american dad and for whom the sleigh bell tolls
I seen clips of it on The Splat, but never aired the Christmas episode till NickRewind.
Speaking of this Zim character, his voice actor also has a role in the recent indipendent cartoon "Helluva Boss". Ever heard of it? If not, you HAVE to give it a watch, it's absolutely worth it!

You didn't mention how Zim had Head Pigeons for nearly the entire episode and how the pigeons coo acted as a means to let Dib know that Zim was close. Funny how the whole Head Pigeons thing was more than just a means to get Zim out of class. XD

Doug should do the TeenTitans episode “Fear Itself” plenty dark and awesome animation in that one.
That episode was gnarly, but I feel like the episode "Haunted" is scarier in a more adult way.
Teen Titans isn't really for little kids, though. More for older kids and teenagers.

I've been waiting YEARS to hear you talk about this show (I'm the one who drew the NC crew in the ZIM style for the DVD cover contest a few years back, plus the NC and Santa Christ Christmas drawing you have hanging on your studio wall in the same style)! And now that you've seen one episode, you absolutely *have* to check out the Invader ZIM X-mas special--just think more of this demented stye and humor, only... Christmasier. I know you'll love it. The Halloween special is a great one too; it has the best production design out of any other episode imo.

Spongebob gets hit with some sort of snail syringe and transforms into a snail. The transformation sequence is quite disturbing. Then he chases Squidward around all the while going "Meow!"

If you enjoyed this episode of Invader Zim, you should definitely see the entire series + movie. It would not take you long as it was unfortunately, short lived-but it is RIGHT up your alley for sure. And kept with this dark tone and humor all throughout.

Everyone says this was one of the Darkest episodes, but I think "Game Slave 2" was pretty dark, if not moreso than this one.

@@neilwhisenant9758 The Year of the Mouse is one of the Tom and Jerry shorts directed and produced by Chuck Jones made in 1965. The Chuck Jones' Tom and Jerry shorts aren't as well known as their predecessors, but were quite stylish and still fun to watch. This one is pretty messed up though.

@@Macandbloo11 Same, "Little Rock of Horrors" is actually one of my favorite episodes. I originally found it to be disturbing, but quickly ended up liking it due to the amazingly catchy Voltaire song "Brains" featured in it.
@@Macandbloo11 Nah, Son of Nergal is darker. Remember that kid Junior got his human form from and mocked him for his appearance? I'm pretty sure Junior killed that boy. If that's not dark, I don't know what is.

I love the episode GIR Goes Crazy and Stuff, where Zim swaps a security guard's brain for a squid's (absurd, since cephalopods don't have a central nervous system) and, at the end, Zim and GIR watch the guard swim off into the ocean as GIR cheerfully says, "awww, he's being eaten by a shark..." as Zim stares in horror and disgust.
I don't remember the name of Zim's Halloween episode, but the art style of the alternate world was damn scary looking.
Believe it or not, but the people who worked on the show wanted to take even darker approaches but Nickelodeon shot the ideas down many times.
Yup. I heard the final episode of Invader Zim was going to have his backpack be removed and that helped him tolerate the oxygen on earth. So since it was stolen, they were going to have a real timer count down to the final seconds of the episode and Zim would die
@@littenfire3563 Sounds a bit like what How I Met Your Mother did in the episode leading up to the death of Marshall's dad - they had a "hidden" Easter Egg where numbers on props and in the background gradually counted down until the climactic phone call at the end of the episode.
I think that Nickelodeon's limits really made this show strike such a great balance between dark but not too overt.
For example, I think the pig kid (the one they mocked) jumping out of the window and flying is much more funny than if he literally jumped to his death.
There was going to be another episode where it turns out that zim got the previous almighty tallest, a female, killed.

As strange as this may seem, I would like to see Doug review Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Pyramid of Light as the Nostalgia Critic. I would like to see him give thoughts on the film that was the second lowest-rated animated film of the 2000's on Rotten Tomatoes, and it was the lowest rated animated film on Metacritic until The Emoji Movie released in 2017. Since he reviews movies based on shows he hasn't seen like Totally Spies and Pokemon, I would like to see where his review would go with this movie.
This was my favourite show growing up and I still hold a lot of love for it. Seeing someone else enjoy it makes me so happy. I hope to see Nostalgia Critic review more in the future!
If you're looking for more creepy cartoon episodes to review, might I recommend "Jack and the Haunted House" from Samurai Jack? That episode terrified me as a kid. So much so that everytime it aired on TV, I wouldn't even watch it.

Why everyone takes Dark Harvest and Not Keith who literally died after Zim removed his eyes with robotic ones and they exploded when he fell from the roof? The Halloween episode? Or the wormhole with the fucking moose? XD 😂 Dark Harvest is scary but not the most scary one

It’s sad how Invader Zim was forgotten by Nickelodeon until Netflix brought it back.
Netflix didnt even make it, Nickelodeon did but they decided not to air it so netflix took it
Not true. Nickelodeon was hounded throughout the 2000s by fans wanting the show to come back, but the most Nick did was sell them merchandise through Hot Topic. Also, it was brought back as a comic series in 2015.
