The "fish-in-a-bowl" joke was kind of done in the Halloween Special, where Sandy dresses up as a goldfish in a bowl as her costume. When Squidward asks what she's supposed to be and she explains, he just explains that he doesn't get it.
It is quite interesting to see the split between the people who watched Spongebob often hating on this episode and Doug, with his little interest in the show, saying he loved it. The best part is I can see where Doug is coming from: it's a good episode by itself. It's the fact that it's set in a show built on a much different tone, and that Spongebob himself is so out-of-character for the sake of the episode's plot, that it does not jive with its bigger fans, and I can understand that as well.
The amount of hate kind of proves just how good a job they did on it. They truly did an excellent job making the monster look horrific. Which makes Spongebob's obliviousness to it all the more infuriating.
@@JustJustin. Or Demolition Doofus. I actually do somewhat like the craziness of everything and just how dark and twisted it is. The dark things are not implied, they are just said straight up and they commit to it.
Pitfalls of that type of comedy. It's not always going to work, and it's extremely frustrating to watch when it doesn't. Personally, I've never seen one that works for me.

I think what’s actually interesting is that Doug likes this episode for how mean spirited it is. Sponge Bob fans despise this episode for being mean spirited, and sponge bob being out of character completely. It’s an interesting perspective.

If anyone's wondering why doug likes this episode despite its hate -his opinion (duh) -as he stated on a previous video (hunchback of nothre dame, if i remember correctly) "when you grow up to be a mean spirited f**k like me this is the kind of s**t you strive for" (or along the lines of that)
Its always interesting to see different takes on episodes. This is regarded as one of the worst Spongebob episodes by a majority of people. It was very refreshing to see a positive perspective on it. Glad you liked the episode.

This reminds me of an episode of Men In Black the Animated Series. When they were going after this alien that looked cute and cuddly but come to find out it was a intergalactic serial killer.
I imagined that when the father talked about leaving the kid guilt free, that he knew exactly what he was getting him. Edit: it just felt like they put an odd amount of attention to that line in the show.
I love the episode where Sponje Bob shaves his head and has *only his eyes and brains fully exposed!* Then he says "Ah, don't worry, it will grow back!" Lol!!!
I remember hating this episode, but seeing it through new eyes that don't have a preconceived idea of how this episode would be, I've actually got some newfound respect for this episode. 👍

@@LGDevilsFan I’m kind of tired of reading comments like these, because you all seem to think that these things are done out of genuine malice, and that they portray these things as a positive thing (despite the very opposite being true). Like, of course this episode is annoying and unpleasant; it’s taking a dumb cliche premise to its logical extreme. The very fact that Gary is constantly in a bad position should indicate that none of what happens to him is a good thing, and that Spongebob is an idiot for not realizing it. It’s SUPPOSED to be annoying and aggravating, because there are other shows that play this trope seriously and without irony.

YES! That ep TERRIFIED me as a child. I remember the bad guy talking to the camera and being one of the first times I saw that type of thing and it threw me for a loop. Seeing it now it's not as scary but I still remember the fear I felt.

It’s actually pretty interesting seeing this from the perspective of a non-Spongebob fan. This is actually one of the most hated modern Spongebob episodes because most people disliked how oblivious Spongebob and how disturbing the episode was overall. But Doug more or less praises the episode because of how disturbing it was and noting that Spongebob being oblivious to what was happening is a pretty common trope in cartoons concerning a “new pet in the house”.

May I recommend Spongebob’s Graveyard Shift 🪦 it has a pretty dark atmosphere along with a cameo from a certain vampire 🧛♂️ 🦇 To be honest that episode got me into the silent film Nosferatu 🎞

I recommend “Just the four of us” from the wonderful world of Mickey Mouse. “The Joy” from the Amazing World of Gumball, and “Ghost bride” from Hey Arnold
SpongeBob is a cartoon that I also didn't grow up on I'm 38. Many of them I have seen is bat shit insane. I think 1 had SpongeBob getting ripped in with Sandy doing extreme things with Pantera playing in the background. That actually got me interest with the show. Big Metal head and old school cartoon fan.
Wow. This just goes to show that one man's trash really can be another man's treasure. To be fair, I myself liked "Squid's Visit" for its creep factor, even though that too was an unpopular episode among fans. It makes sense though. Doug has openly said he loves mean-spirited humor so ironically enough, this hated episode would be right up his alley. He even thought the infamous, "Gary! You put Puffy Fluffy down right now!" line was funny while the rest of us just felt infuriated by it.
Personally, I would love to see him cover the episode entitled "Wormy"! It's not dark per say, but the IRL closeups of the butterfly are pretty disturbing.
The fact that SpongeBob can’t see what’s staring him right in the face, I used to hate this episode for that. Though I began seeing that kind of thing happen in different media uses so while I hate the that this happened, I’m actually glad he made me aware that someone could really stupe down to that level of stupidity.

The only spongebob episode that scared me was the one where Patrick and Spongebob, are watching “Wormy” and he became a butterfly. And the way the present the butterfly is horrifying at least to me XD
This is actually probably one of the most hated Spongebob episodes, a lot of people hate that Gary goes through so much and Spongebob is so rude and inconsiderate to him. People have complained that during this time (2009ish) the show got too mean-spirited. So I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I seen this as a kid still in elementary school and I actually love this episode. I was into horror movies for someone really young and seeing Puffy Fluffy was awesome since kid shows usually don't get dark & creepy
I'm not gonna lie, I can of like hearing an opposing opinion on an episode that has an almost universal opinion. It doesn't mean I agree with it, I still don't like this episode, but hearing a different point of view on it is pretty cool, especially out of someone like Doug, who isn't an avid SpongeBob watcher and probably wasn't aware of this episode's reputation. But that's the beauty of shows like this, it exposes you to new ideas and helps you look at things in a new way, even if you don't adopt that perspective at the end of the day. Cue comments calling me pretentious and ignorant.
I agree with you. When people look at this episode, they see the horrible writing and Spongebob being an idiot towards Gary, and that’s for people who grew up on the show like I did. But I love when he looks at it from a different point of view unlike a lot of other reviewers who just see this episode as bad.
Why don't you look at "Hermit Ren"? That had some pretty trippy moments, _especially_ that startling shot where Ren sees himself as the mummified corpse.
I recommend the Ed, Edd and Eddy episodes: - The the day the Ed stood still - The Eds are coming - Boo Haw Haw - Dawn of the Eds - Once Upon an Ed Those are the most memorable strange episodes to me. Idk if you'd call them Dark Toons but they do have some freaky stuff imo. These stuck with me in particular and probably some other people as well
It's freaking me out that yesterday I watched Spongebob SquarePants for the first time ever and I stumbled upon this episode and today you're releasing this.
The WORM episode is probably my favorite in terms of Spongebob parodying "Scary Films" (both a send off of JAWS and TREMORS all at once).........and of course, it's an ALASKAN!!! BULL!!! WORMMMM!!!!!!
I just wanted to say, thank you Doug and the entire team for bringing so many laughs into my life. I had to recover from a bad injury and the Nostalgia Critic kept me laughing and made me appreciate all the work you put into your work.
I don’t think I’ve ever been scared of a spongebob episode. Courage the Cowardly dog: yep. invader zim: kinda. almost anything else: no. Maybe that one Halloween episode of Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Anyway it took me a moment to remember “Oh right, this is the gremlins episode”
How about this one: the Looney toon where the og version of Elmer is prospecting. Mentally slow child character, Bugs buries Elmer alive,Bugs thinks hes lost the lower half of his body and freaks out,they steal each others teeth.. Its dark in its MEANESS but its funny as HELL.
If you did "A Pal for Gary", you gotta do "One Course Meal", where Plankton gets traumatized by Mr Krabs for nothing to the point of paranoia and wanting to KILL HIMSELF
I hated it when Fluffy-whatever it's name was mutated and destroyed The Kitchen, and Gary got Scolded by SpongeBob, even though his Other Pet was causing chaos *Right In Front Of His Face!* Even as a little kid, I hated how SpongeBob Treated Gary in this episode, I was all like "Are you blind SpongeBob? You're new pet is destroying The House! Not Gary!!!"
Yes. SpongeBob was really blind in this episode. I mean, there's not realizing that the newcomer is bad news and there's not seeing the truth even when it's right before your very eyes in bold colors fricking crystal clear, for crying out loud!
I liked the little detail of the eyes shifting back and forth as the creature first barred fang, like it was already keeping watch for Spongebob's return to maintain its cover as harmless while it got its threat on.
Oh god no doug you should have just looked at graveyard shift. I don't even hate this era of spongebob as much as others but this isn't one of the better episodes from that era to say the least Edit:(I'm kind of shocked you liked this episode your probably going to get alot of hate for this lol.)

@@arsenelupin9697 Because the episode has SpongeBob blaming Gary for everything that monster fish did, even though everything was happening RIGHT. IN FRONT. OF HIM. Even when he sees Gary about to be eaten by that monster, he tells GARY to put the monster fish down, and blames GARY for chasing away the monster after Gary SAVED. SPONGEBOB'S. LIFE. That makes a pretty bad episode, even if you chalk it up to "dark humor". Even then, the new seasons at least TRY to keep the episodes similar to how they were in the first 3 seasons, especially since the creator of the show came back before he died
Watching this Dark Toons episode legitimately makes me feel like how Popeye felt about Shorty in “Happy Birthdaze.” It would be so therapeutic if someone edited a “the bitter end” clip for this episode.
I expected you to rip this episode apart, because it's almost universally hated within the community. But I was surprised to see that you enjoyed it. And honestly that's a breath of fresh air among the sea of "bad episode" reviews. This shows a different perspective on it and I enjoy that.
There was a gag in the first Halloween episode where Sandy is dressed as a goldfish in a bowl, which if I recall correctly was either not understood by other characters or seen as genuinely scary.

Like, of course this episode is annoying and unpleasant; it’s taking a dumb cliche premise to its logical extreme. The very fact that Gary is constantly in a bad position should indicate that none of what happens to him is a good thing, and that Spongebob is an idiot for not realizing it. It’s SUPPOSED to be annoying and aggravating, because there are other shows that play this trope seriously and without irony.

YES! That ep TERRIFIED me as a child. I remember the bad guy talking to the camera and being one of the first times I saw that type of thing and it threw me for a loop. Seeing it now it's not as scary but I still remember the fear I felt.

It’s actually pretty interesting seeing this from the perspective of a non-Spongebob fan. This is actually one of the most hated modern Spongebob episodes because most people disliked how oblivious Spongebob and how disturbing the episode was overall. But Doug more or less praises the episode because of how disturbing it was and noting that Spongebob being oblivious to what was happening is a pretty common trope in cartoons concerning a “new pet in the house”.

May I recommend Spongebob’s Graveyard Shift 🪦 it has a pretty dark atmosphere along with a cameo from a certain vampire 🧛♂️ 🦇 To be honest that episode got me into the silent film Nosferatu 🎞

SpongeBob is a cartoon that I also didn't grow up on I'm 38. Many of them I have seen is bat shit insane. I think 1 had SpongeBob getting ripped in with Sandy doing extreme things with Pantera playing in the background. That actually got me interest with the show. Big Metal head and old school cartoon fan.
Wow. This just goes to show that one man's trash really can be another man's treasure. To be fair, I myself liked "Squid's Visit" for its creep factor, even though that too was an unpopular episode among fans.
It makes sense though. Doug has openly said he loves mean-spirited humor so ironically enough, this hated episode would be right up his alley. He even thought the infamous, "Gary! You put Puffy Fluffy down right now!" line was funny while the rest of us just felt infuriated by it.
Personally, I would love to see him cover the episode entitled "Wormy"! It's not dark per say, but the IRL closeups of the butterfly are pretty disturbing.
The fact that SpongeBob can’t see what’s staring him right in the face, I used to hate this episode for that. Though I began seeing that kind of thing happen in different media uses so while I hate the that this happened, I’m actually glad he made me aware that someone could really stupe down to that level of stupidity.

This is actually probably one of the most hated Spongebob episodes, a lot of people hate that Gary goes through so much and Spongebob is so rude and inconsiderate to him. People have complained that during this time (2009ish) the show got too mean-spirited. So I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I seen this as a kid still in elementary school and I actually love this episode. I was into horror movies for someone really young and seeing Puffy Fluffy was awesome since kid shows usually don't get dark & creepy
I'm not gonna lie, I can of like hearing an opposing opinion on an episode that has an almost universal opinion. It doesn't mean I agree with it, I still don't like this episode, but hearing a different point of view on it is pretty cool, especially out of someone like Doug, who isn't an avid SpongeBob watcher and probably wasn't aware of this episode's reputation.
But that's the beauty of shows like this, it exposes you to new ideas and helps you look at things in a new way, even if you don't adopt that perspective at the end of the day.

I agree with you. When people look at this episode, they see the horrible writing and Spongebob being an idiot towards Gary, and that’s for people who grew up on the show like I did. But I love when he looks at it from a different point of view unlike a lot of other reviewers who just see this episode as bad.

How about this one: the Looney toon where the og version of Elmer is prospecting. Mentally slow child character, Bugs buries Elmer alive,Bugs thinks hes lost the lower half of his body and freaks out,they steal each others teeth.. Its dark in its MEANESS but its funny as HELL.
If you did "A Pal for Gary", you gotta do "One Course Meal", where Plankton gets traumatized by Mr Krabs for nothing to the point of paranoia and wanting to KILL HIMSELF
Between this episode and the one where Mr Krabs drove Plankton to suicide The dark episodes of SpongeBob are never usually the best

I hated it when Fluffy-whatever it's name was mutated and destroyed The Kitchen, and Gary got Scolded by SpongeBob, even though his Other Pet was causing chaos *Right In Front Of His Face!* Even as a little kid, I hated how SpongeBob Treated Gary in this episode, I was all like "Are you blind SpongeBob? You're new pet is destroying The House! Not Gary!!!"

I liked the little detail of the eyes shifting back and forth as the creature first barred fang, like it was already keeping watch for Spongebob's return to maintain its cover as harmless while it got its threat on.

@@arsenelupin9697 Because the episode has SpongeBob blaming Gary for everything that monster fish did, even though everything was happening RIGHT. IN FRONT. OF HIM. Even when he sees Gary about to be eaten by that monster, he tells GARY to put the monster fish down, and blames GARY for chasing away the monster after Gary SAVED. SPONGEBOB'S. LIFE. That makes a pretty bad episode, even if you chalk it up to "dark humor". Even then, the new seasons at least TRY to keep the episodes similar to how they were in the first 3 seasons, especially since the creator of the show came back before he died
An episode i'd suggest is "The Heebie Jeebies" From Wander Over Yonder. The show itself is heavily underrated and that episode is creepy as hell.

I expected you to rip this episode apart, because it's almost universally hated within the community. But I was surprised to see that you enjoyed it. And honestly that's a breath of fresh air among the sea of "bad episode" reviews. This shows a different perspective on it and I enjoy that.

There was a gag in the first Halloween episode where Sandy is dressed as a goldfish in a bowl, which if I recall correctly was either not understood by other characters or seen as genuinely scary.
