I also recommend How To Haunt A House because in that one they do spend it all in a pretty mansion but Goofy dies right at the beginning and spends the whole cartoon as a ghost having to figure out how to haunt his new mansion and the ending with him and the quacker he's trying to scare is somewhat dark and really funny.

One of my favorites from Mickey’s House of Villains. I don’t find it that dark though since the narrator even explains right from the start Goofy being a ghost is only temporary.
The darker toons from the villain takeover, “Donald’s Halloween Scare” and “Hansel and Gretel” were really good too. But probably not Dark Toons worthy.

    • @PaulW_ftPAULK
      @PaulW_ftPAULK ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@Depth217 I love House of Villains! My rational for it is that even when temporary they still had Goofy get run over and the ending is literally Donald getting run over and he chases Donald right off a cliff. Hansel and Gretel was brilliantly animated but didn't really add anything to the darkness of the original story. Donald's Halloween Haunt did scare me as a kid but it only has the scene where the triplets are fake zombies. Maybe the entire thing could be analyzed as a Dark Toon of sorts, thought.

I always thought when Goofy goes to hit the weasel with the blackjack that he’s just so inept that he knocked himself out, not that he knocked out the weasel but ended up in the alley himself.
Also, you know the writers toyed with the idea of instead of using goof balls they “slip him a Mickey”.

I recommend the Ben 10 episodes Last Laugh and Ghostfreaked Out as they are connected, the latter episode being a follow up to Last Laugh and they are possibly the scariest and darkest episodes in the entirety of a mostly light-hearted, super hero franchise. And if those episodes get you interested, check out the Ben 10 Omniverse episode, Something Zombozo This Way Comes, it’s not nearly as dark or scary as the previous two episodes but it features the return of the main villain of Last Laugh, the soul eating killer clown, Zombozo!

One of my favorite jokes about the Goofy cartoons and how violent they were, there is an episode of House of Mouse (I remember you did a Disneycember of it one time) where Max was trying to convince Goofy to get him a car, and shenanigans ensue convincing Goofy that Max isn’t responsible. In response, Mickey and Friends pull out a compilation of “Goofy’s younger days driving” with the old Goofy shorts where he’s exhibiting road rage and getting into accidents and basically calling out Goofy for not being a responsible driver himself, and I think that’s a funny way to bring in the older stuff as almost a “Kids, here is an example of what NOT to do.”

Alan Reed did a voice similar to that fancy narrator voice in the "Flinstones" episode that was a play on Cinderella. Fred's fairy godmother turns him into Frederick J. [Unintelligible Noise], who speaks very properly, so he can attend a party given by Mr. Slate . Of course, at Midnight, Fred suddenly regains his normal gruff voice and has to flee.

The Song of the Birds: Two cartoons of this title, one a 1935 cartoon directed by Max Fleischer, and a 1948 remake featuring the character Little Audrey. Basic premise is a child shoots a baby bird with a toy gun, seemingly killing it. The parents of the bird grieve and hold a funeral. Might be interesting to compare the two versions.
Peace on Earth: An elderly squirrel tells his grandchildren the story of how humans went extinct due to their love of war. Also has a remake called "Good Will to Men."
The Pincushion Man (also called Balloon Land): a strangely phallic shaped pincushion creature wants to murder living people made of balloons (and he does).
Animaniacs 2020 episode "Good Warner Hunting": A hunter hunts down the characters from the old show. Depictions of the characters with their heads mounted on the wall is not only dark but especially disturbing to old fans of the original (even if they are totally fine in the end).
Education for Death: Disney WWII propaganda cartoon about how Hitler's rule will lead the children of Germany to their deaths.
The Old Army Game: Donald Duck cartoon where Donald ends up in a situation where he is far too enthusiastic to commit suicide.

I feel like because Goofy isn’t reacting to the horrible things happening to him, it doesn’t come off as dark as “Donald held at gunpoint” or “Mickey about to be dissected.”
Of course, this is still a great short and I feel like I missed it due to the amount of over the top violence that was on display. Still, I know I got a couple laughs watching this and Goofy is usually a great lead when he gets his chance in the spotlight.

If I had to suggest a cartoon to look into, “The Cuphead Show” on Netflix has some pretty good episdoes - particularly “Ghosts Ain't Real”. I highly recommend “The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians: Episode 4: The Fear.” Airing in early October 1985 and written by Alan Burnett (DCAU, anyone?), this episode has the Scarecrow discovering that Batman (voiced by the late great Adam West) is afraid of a certain place called Crime Alley. This episode shows Batman in a way not yet seen at the time: truly vulnerable. It also features the first ever onscreen depiction of Batman’s origins, from his parents to Joe Chill. This is considered the darkest and most controversial Super Friends episode ever. I cannot recommend it enough.

There was this one Donald Duck cartoon called "Donald's Camera" from 1941. It's mostly standard, although it opens up with Donald window shopping for a camera, where a sign in the window reads "shoot nature with a camera instead of a gun", in a shop right next to a sporting goods shop with a shotgun on display along with stuffed woodland creatures all having terrified faces. Throughout the short, a bird keeps on pestering Donald while threatening to destroy the camera. The ending was later censored (kind of hilariously) with a iris wipe to black just before Donald goes ballistic, turning into a literal electric flash and rushing for the shotgun in the opening then going after the bird. As a kid I hated that ending for that dark turn, despite the cartoon's average mean spiritness for a Donald short. It's up there along with Donald pulling out his gun at the end of "Magician Mickey", or maybe more so even.

This one did run here in Germany when I was a kid in the 90s, they actually showed a bunch of cartoons they wouldn't show today anymore, like the ones with Donald in the Army (except for when he joined the you-know-what army, that one obviously never made it here X3) and stuff like that, but this one I saw more than once back then, and I totally loved it. Big Film Noir fan to this day, maybe that came from this cartoon.

I remember a really dark moment in a Disney cartoon, where Donald Duck is the sheriff of a wild west town that is visited by the bandit Pete. Pete attacking the town is a moment used twice in both Goofy Two Gun and The Lone Chipmonks featuring Chip and Dale. This one is rather unique as it depicts Pete on a murder spree while robbing the bank and ends with Donald getting shot (off screen).
It was used an intro to the Goofy Two Gun cartoon if I remember correctly, making me suspect there are two versions of Goofy Two Gun.
