The 1943 Disney short "Chicken Little." It has Foxy Loxy using a book of psychology (originally supposed to be Hitler's Mein Kampf) in order to get himself some fowl for dinner. The scary part? He actually succeeds!

There's a Daisy Duck episode where Donald gets hit on the head and gains a beautiful singing voice but looks coldly at Daisy as if he doesn't know her. She grows increasingly desperate for him to recognize her and be her one and only again. While the main explicitly dark moment is a well-executed suicide gag, the more I think about it the more disturbing it gets. Donald either has amnesia or playing such because he now has an attractive voice and Daisy either wants Donald back because she can't imagine a life without him or does not want to live anymore after he dumps her. And it has one of the greatest mean-spirited jokes in any Disney short.

I know what episode you're talking about, and I don't really like it because it's just too mean. Like, what Doug said in the "Tom and Jerry are masters of comedy" video doesn't really match this episode; Jerry just tortures Tom while he's asleep and laughs at him almost realistically dying (the noose bit scares me, not as a child but as an adult). Maybe if things were more comical like dynamite sticks or anvils, then I would be more OK with it, but it was "too real" for my tastes.

Fun fact to elaborate on the organ music, that instrument you are hearing in this cartoon is a Hammond Novachord. It was a state-of-the-art instrument at the time, and quite a bizarre one at that. The tones are generated entirely by vacuum tubes, and nothing else truly matches the eerie warm sound for this type of score.

I remember one dark Donald cartoon I watched when I was a kid. I don't remember the whole thing but it involved the three nephews and Donald becoming increasingly paranoid about them. Eventually Donald find a pack of cigars he assumed was the nephews'. He confronts and forces them to smoke them all and they change to a grey ashen colour which made me think they were dead. Donald finds the cigars were a gift for him and is wrecked with guilt and in the process shrinks down and falls through a whole in the floor. It was so weird and dark to me, it stuck un my head ever since. I haven't seen the cartoon again since so I am not sure whether it was as dark as I remembered it.

It was the short Donald’s Happy Birthday (1949). The reason he gives the nephews cigars were because earlier, the nephews were able to get money to buy him a gift. He tells them to save their money for a rainy day, though the nephews get their money back and buys him the cigar. He is worried that they might start smoking, so he plugs them into their mouths. It’s one of the shorts that doesn’t get dark until the end.

my grandparents had (and probably still do somewhere) some cartoons recorded off the Disney channel when I was a kid and this one was on there, ALWAYS loved watching it at nite. The weirdness of it slowly ramping up was oddly comfortable, and the spooky music was always fun.. Pauline's face had a lot of good expressions too, especially when she pulls that fire-ax out of Hennesy's pocket, sizes up the handle, and THEN winds up~ It might've been the hardest my grandpa ever laughed too, when he pulls out those guns, "It's ME! I DONE IT!" in a fit of confused madness. Real good choice here, Doug!

Might I recommend some episodes of The Amazing World of Gumball? I feel a good few episodes could fit the bill. Specifically:
"The Joy", a parody of a zombie apocalypse; "The Puppy", basically a parody of a slasher/monster movie; or "The Recipe", a deconstruction of the 'They Killed Kenny' trope, rife with black comedy. Interestingly, these were episodes 4, 5 and 6 of Season 3 - they all aired consecutively.

Actually they didn't. Until 50's most of animation was shown in cinema, so alongside comedic sketches and sometimes B-movie were used to fill time block, as people at the time weren't paying for specific movies but timed seances. And kids usually didn't go to cinema with Snow White being considered as huge experiment at the time. Popularization of TV change everything with cinemas switching to ticket per movie. Disney due to being more family friendly could reedit large part of they cartoons (when Fleischer straight went bankrupt as they were more adult oriented and Werner was inbetween with stuff like censored eleven), but they still struggle competing with low quality hacks like Hannah Barbera (later known as Cartoon Network). Leading to infamous Dark Age of Animation (50-70) what still hang on reputation of cartoons as cheap kids entertainment. Everything start changing with introduction of color TV in 70's what bring more kids to TV's and later legalization of toy commercial cartoons in 90's, what ironically increase quality of those as studios like Marvel were payed to make product attractive, not to make income from show itself. That also overlap with Disney Renaissance fallowed with birth od 3D animation. That lead to backlash of parents in late 90's, what lead to introducing parent quiescence's (both games and TV) what severely hurt action TV shows, what did try distinguish themselves as targeted to teens with use of 3D or Anime style (as it also stop being censored at the time). It wasn't until 2010 when several 2D animated shows (=cheaper but not cheap) become big hits among adults leading to current rebirth of animation (largely lead by Disney as they have old adult fandom), what also overlap with premiere of Tangled what make Disney Animation equal to Pixar after long struggle. Though drop in cost of 3D animation make cinema filled with poor quality products of that kind, now.

@@kriticalitylives Yup. In that time animation companies commonly work according to Don Bluth rule that you can show kids almost everything, until it has happy ending. Numerous shows were made deliberately to prepare kids to deal with trauma of real life. And quite ironically many kids understand that better then they oversensitive parents. This approach is also huge part of old style anime. But then government step in and history repeat itself. As nowadays many people question those regulations, same way as people questioned Comics Code in the 80's.

Here's another Tom & Jerry one, but from the Chuck Jones iteration:
    "The Year of the Mouse"
So Jerry and some random scruffy looking mouse just spend the whole episode screwing with Tom, making him think he's trying to kill himself in his sleep.
    No Joke.
That's actually what Jerry and this other mouse do throughout the episode.
They start off with little pranks, but they gradually ramp it up into really dark ones.

My favorite part is when Jerry plants a knife in Tom's hand and covers it in ketchup. He then pours some out on Tom's chest to make it look like a wound. It's absolutely messed up--but hilarious. I've actually seen this one on Cartoon Network at some point!

The Casper cartoon "There's Good Boos Tonight." Is a surprisingly dark one for me.
Most of it plays out as a normal Casper cartoon where he befriends a fox, but a group of hunters shoot and kill the fox. Casper finds his body, but the fox's ghost appears so they can be "friends forever". They try to make it happy, but even as a kid the ending still didn't satisfy me because I knew the fox was dead.

I actually remember this short from a collection I used to rent from my local video store as a kid, which had several scary Disney cartoons (Pluto's Judgment Day was in that collection, so were Donald's Lucky Day, Trick or Treat and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow among others)... interesting little trip down memory lane...

I can't speak to much else in the cartoon but I can tell you the "author" setting with beaches and palm trees while wearing a Hawaiian shirt were references to the Tiki culture that was big at the time, especially in Hollywood. The author was either based on a real Disney employee or just a representation of a literary contemporary enamored with Tiki culture. It was so prevalent during that era that there are probably dozens of Disney and Warner cartoons that revolve around the theme.

What I view about the cartoon is that it is exactly how my dreams are. Everything is without logic, I jump from one scenario to another and I do not even realize I am dreaming. As a child, I rarely had the ability to control my dreams, but when I started 6th grade, I lost that ability and now I can never control what happens. Just last night, I was doing whatever random scenarios were happening and in the middle of it, I was walking in a thunderstorm with a coat blanket on my head and a lightning struck me by the head and I had flashes in my point of view of things in my environment fast-forwarding like I am seeing people looking down worried and I see only split seconds, so I am switching from 1/2 second vision - to - vision, until I finally find myself in a bed and being told I was in a coma for 4 years and I just SHRUG IT OFF LIKE IT WAS SOME NORMAL DAY

There is an MGM cartoon from 1939 called "Peace On Earth". It masquerades as a cutesy kid-centric yarn, some granddad squirrel recounting the past to his grandkids. Then the bulk of the content reveals its mixed emotional/ideological bag. I suspect it of secretly being the work of a time-traveling Ralph Bakshi.
