    8:15 the demon doesn’t want tea, he’s just messing with Courage (and going off Muriel’s fondness for tea) just for the sake of giving courage a fake out scare.
    And it always cracks me up! I don’t think any other kind of ‘cup of’ something would be more effective than ‘tea’.

      Batman: The Animated Series had title cards as well...well granted they weren't as elaborate as certain other WB shows at the time, they were a bit simplistic in cases, but they really did do the job, conveying an idea of what's gonna happen and such, or what the theme of it could be...I hated that they took those title cards away in "The New Batman Adventures"

    The “cup of tea” joke is a play-on of one of Muriel’s catchphrases, “I would like a wee cup o’ tea.”

    I love how this show made stories I'd normally be too afraid to watch like The Exorcist here and Psycho in Katz Motel actually enjoyable to watch. I think it was a combination of both the creative animation styles and a dose of comedy in the parody elements that did it for me.

    Haha I think the best thing about the tea scene is the build up for the let down. The expression on the demon's face as it slowly draws out the snetace before the jumps care is perfect. It GENUINLY is given an air of maliciousness, like it has something sinister planned and can't help but break character to grin evenly as it reaches the last couple words and then it reveals something so stupid and harmless. Even courage flips out only to realize mid scream how inappropriately mundane the flash reveal of a fully set tea tray is and raises his eyebrow at the scenario. There is a demon fully capable of the most painful and tortuous acts and it pulls a fake out like this. It is clear to the demon that courage is a coward and it is just fucking with him in delight for that and it honestly makes this scene so funny. It makes perfect use of subverting the audience's expectations in such a funny way but in this case, they SORT of break the fourth wall and include courage on this. It's so unexpectedly weird and harmless that even he is nearly scratching his head in confusion, taken out of the environment he is in by the nature of the joke. The fact this confusion in courage was clearly what the demon was internally laughing about rather than something gebuinly scaring him makes you laugh along with it..and when you realize THAT, it's rhe funniest and scariest part. They made you sympathize with the demon, mentally torturing this poor little dog. You KIND of do it with Eustace but this is the striat up villain of the episode and yet it did something that you can't help but laugh at.

    Two really dark episodes of Courage are “The Windmill Vandals” and “Last of the Starmakers”. I highly recommend both for this series.
    “The Windmill Vandals” has to have some of the more frightening villains and unique stories, and the art style/animation is fantastic.
    “Last of the Starmakers” is so dark because it has on screen deaths (and implied experimentation/torture) and will break your heart watching it. Greatly recommend it as well; not inherently frightening, it’s a absolutely tragic.

      @ramblingdemon9471 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ToastyBrain Definitely in my top three favorite Courage episodes. I remember crying the first time I saw it, and nothing has changed. I really hope Doug reviews it.
      Fun fact: Shows like this were able to get away with these sort of things not only due to a loosened grip on censorship, but because the networks were gauging which shows and episodes received the most views. A good example of this is Adult Swim, which when created used ratings from Cartoon Network to see what would be good continuation in network programming and transitioning.
      A good example of this is Samurai Jack and Powerpuff for violence, or the humor of Cartoon Planet. (Compare Cartoon Network to Nick which was geared primarily towards a younger audience with few exceptions; that being Danny Phantom. Nick still advertises to a younger audience).
      Conversely, consider today’s Cartoon Network. Everyone complains about the CalArts Style and Teen Titans Go problem. Recently Cartoon Network even admitted they are gearing towards a younger audience. So the shows reflect that. Like Nick, Cartoon Network has started showing these shows geared towards a younger audience, which is currently popular, and thusly remains popular (which is why Nick hasn’t evolved since Spongebob, and CN since Go).
      We (90’s and early 2000’s) were the lab mice for the new generation separating children’s programming from adult programming.

      "Last of the Starmakers" is an absolutely beautiful and hauntingly sad episode. We see the star squid's husband risk his life for his wife and unborn children and we see the star squid herself needing Courage and Muriel's help to bring her children to life and make their way back to the sky to make stars. Also, that episode has the most beautiful, sad piano music I've ever heard.

    3:25 I once heard an interesting fact that the reason Wes Craven made Freddy Kruger's jumper red and green is because of the way the eye interprets those colours. The colour frequency is so opposed that, when seen next to each other, it causes the brain to 'flip' between them, thus making it uncomfortable and thereby subconsciously making you feel uneasy.
    TL:DR red and green together naturally make you feel weird.
