No one has mentioned the looney tunes cartoon cheese chasers. It’s about two mice who want to commit suicide.
_Actually,_ Zim is a grown adult. He just acts like a child, and he looks like one because he's short. That makes his rivalry with Dib even more pathetic and funny.
That’s not necessarily true. Zim has no confirmed age - Jhonen Vasquez made one or two comments about Zim being an adult, but he makes false comments all the time (like saying that he wanted to put a romance between Zim and Gaz in the show) and the pitch bible straight-up says it’s about a rivalry between two children. IMO you could make an argument either way, so it’s up to interpretation what Zim’s age actually is.
@@Turbomun In the unfinished episode The Trial, Zim was shown to be born in the same clutch as the Tallest. If he's a kid, they're kids too. Maybe him being a child was an early idea that was later scrapped or a straight-up lie to appease Nickelodeon's desire for a child protagonist.
@@kimifw58 I know, but that episode’s still not actually canon, and I could easily see them all being teenagers or something. My point here isn’t that Zim is definitely a child - it’s that Jhonen has said multiple times that there is no word of god for this series, so it can be interpreted in multiple ways. That’s all. Not saying you’re wrong, just that there’s no definite answer.
@@Turbomun I mean we also need to consider continuity and Invader Zim don't really mix. I mean Keff shows up in the backgrounds without robo eyes. I think Zim got his brain replaced with a rubber piggy once if I'm remembering that episode right. Dib had a mooing cow toy for lungs, but then didn't in other episodes. Dib and Zim became sausages. Even in the comics the universe just kinda resets between episodes/books. Zim might be a child, teen or adult at any time doesn't really matter. Whatever you find funniest is what's right.
All i know is that it was stated that zim is definitely older then anyone on earth and he thinks a good use of his time is to throw hands with a child.
I always interpreted that last "You don't like waffles?" as a memory and that it further emphasized that Keif had died

The Irken bodies themselves seem to be mostly expendable. That backpack-like thing on Zim's back? It's called a PAK, and it contains all of Zim's intelligence and personality. The PAK _is_ Zim, and "Zim" is just a host body.
In a cancelled episode "10 Minutes of Doom", the PAK got removed and attached itself to Dib. Zim began to physically and mentally deteriorate and Dib began acting much more Zim-like. If the PAK was not attached to Zim, both he and Dib would've died after the titular ten minutes.
In fact, the episode was intended to be the series finale, ending with both Zim and Dib dying. But Nickelodeon wanted the series to end on a Christmas episode.

Also funny enough in the comic zim's pak gets attached to a chair while his body is being used by another person with a rip off pak. Zim literally becomes a chair. Got to give props to dib for toughing zim's pack out though, it caused a mass shutdown and insanity of the control brains when hooked up.

I think so; remember when Zim tried the homeless man disguise and roasted his eyeballs by staring at the sun? He was mostly just inconvenienced, since he couldn't see, and told Gir to watch over him while his eyeballs healed.

Another really dark invader zim episode is “Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy” I dunno something about zim slowly ruining that kids life always made me uncomfortable
Yeah if Doug does IZ again he should do that one next. That was a very creepy disturbing episode. It was a cool but unsettling effective reminder that Zim is NOT to root for. He'd definitely kill a child off, with the fullest cruelty gladly, and would be very serious business as a villain, if his evil wasn't constantly burdened by total laziness or incompetent stupidity.
The ones that always stuck with me were the episode where gaz is trying to get this new game or something and torments the kid that got the last copy and the (i think) last epsiode or nearing last where there's a bunch of time travel shenanigans and dib gets mauled by a chimp and you see some of the shadow and the aftermath of it with future dib. The chimp stuck with me more. I think you know why.
Fun fact: Dib was actually supposed to die in that episode originally, and a new nemisis character was supposed to be brought in for Zim.

I saw there was a lot of unfished or lost episodes of invader zim, I wish they were able to be made and that it wasn't canceled when it was. But at least we have transcripts and some of them have voice recordings.
I actually find the Halloween episode of Invader Zim to be the darkest. It goes through dark topics like insane asylums and hallucinations, and SPOILER ALERT, literally shows Dib pull himself inside an out, guts and all.
Is that the one where Dib summons Solomon Grundy and he becomes overbearing?

Honestly, I kind of feel like Zim would be a perfect show for Doug to do Vlogs of like he did in the past for stuff like Avatar. I'm sure he's busy with stuff, but this and Courage are both right up his alley and deserve for him to fully watch through the series......

I can agree to that. And with how much he has praised their stylistic choices in both shows and their brands of humor I am a little surprised he hasn't already.

You should do that one episode where Zim keeps going back in time and attempting to kill Dib but only winds up repeatedly disfiguring him.
That one freaked me out as a kid. It was mainly the chimp part though that scarred me. Never been the same since.

because Nick at one time was a very cool network, now it's garbo.
Especially considering the creator's previous work. They should've known what to expect. Back in the day, Nickelodeon did allow a lot more creative freedom than they do now. Their philosophy was to let kids decide what they wanted to watch- not what their parents thought was safe and appropriate (within reason).
I'm surprised the creator got approved for it, considering his previous work was a comic aptly titled Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.

I always assumed that Keef did die, and that the replaying of the line as the smoke rises wasn't him saying it again but was a reminder of what his personality was like (I'm not sure if there's a technical term for this in filmmaking).
The creator of the show joked that the gir at the end was to show that gir was the puppeteer to Keef's death. And to explain how keef shows up in later episodes he said maybe Keef's full robot by the end of the series or he's a monster that just looks human 😆

I'd like him to review the G.I. Joe episode "There's no place like Springfield." A psychological episode with melting people.

He finds out that he has been married and has a little daughter and all the Joe's of all since retired since winning the war. But, he get suspicious when the Cobra and the Joe's hunt him down for the secret code. It turns out he was in a dream created by Cobra.
@@wstine79 not a dream but a complex simulation with Synthroid copies of people. when it all goes south (and a little before), people start melting including his wife and daughter. I remember that episode, though they cut parts of it in later airings. The melting thing was pretty dang creepy.
Been pushing for this episode for the longest time. Probably Cobra's cruelest scheme, seconded only by the one from "Captives of Cobra".
If I remember it right, that was a 2 part episode. One of the best episodes of the entire series.
Little known fact. The animators didn't have fun drawing Invader Zim. In fact, it was a nightmare to animate since that type of drawing was so new. Animators even quit

Since you're getting into Zim episodes, check the Halloween special. It's one of the best darkest episodes of the show (besides the Christmas special).

Mr. Meaty was the most horrific and dark show I ever watched on nickelodeon. It may have been that I was a in my late teens when it came out. Invader Zim is by far the most child friendly things Vasquez has ever produced and nickelodeon always had some dark toons (Rugrats typically being babies wandering around in supervised as an example. The Thornberry kids getting nearly mauled by wild animals)
All Nickelodeon shows [were] dark.
This is what happens when adult television networks turn down an artist, and then a children's network picks it up from the mind of someone who's most popular comic is "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac"

Honestly I think Zim would be terrified of Nugget, especially since Nugget dug a tunnel so deep he made a cavern, gives his friends chicken nuggets as tokens of friendship, and even caused the apocalypse TWICE.

Spongebob’s SB-129 is so different and darker than any other episode. That’s a recommendation.
Zim is just a fantastic sci-fi comedy. There are plenty of dark episodes (like the Halloween one), but other episodes lean on more sci-fi heavy concepts (Planet Jackers) and actually have some pretty cool ideas. The most consistent thing about the show is its nonstop, off-the-wall, manic flavor of comedy. And screaming.
Saw this when it first aired. That eye scene still sticks in my head to this day.
I remember actually being nauseated by the sheer horror of it back in the day. xD
I can handle gore and horror a lot better these days.
I remember being so deeply disgusted and horrified by it that I was kind of shell-shocked. It also decisively put me off watching the show ever again.
I actually had to turn away from the screen when that happened.

I can't remember the name of the episode, but it was from the 2003 adaptation, and it involved the Turtles going into a cave with Cassie's sister, I think, and suffering from hallucinations via *LITERAL CTHULU* . It was a pretty dark episode, and there was even a scene where Leo or Raph kills Splinter, and you see the weapon punch through Splinter's back.
@@kamikazelemming1552 that episode scared the SHIT out of me as a kid lol. Seeing Leo STAB HIS FATHER was like....holy shit. And Raph fighting Shredder only for it to reveal HE KILLED HIMSELF like....the episodes of cartoons that deal with one's inner fears are always some of my FAVORITES. Which now that I think about it I don't think we ever saw Don's inner fear, just Mikey's, Raph's and Leo's.

I thought Zim made the eyes to both make the kid hallucinate, THEN he fell onto the ground, and the eyes exploded, and the line "You don't like waffles?" was him suffering some pretty major trauma to the head.

You should do the episode of Animaniacs with Baloney. He’s creepy as he is, but 3 Warner anvils to the head and he doesn’t stay down. That is objectively terrifying.
I remember seeing this episode when it first aired. I was about five or six when I saw it, and it was one of those things that haunted me throughout my childhood. I had forgotten what the show was called, until about 2010 when the popularly for Invader Zim came back. Since then, I've been a huge fan of the show. 🤣
i loved this show growing up and still do to this day, it's so different from the usual sticking by the safe way to go cartoons, it's demented, disturbing, twisted, and mentally scarring to alot of kids, but that's what makes it so great, i've heard rumors of a more adult continuation of it and it still being directed by Jhonen Vasquez, and i absolutely can't wait for it! this is such a great and creative show, thank you Doug for taking the time to review it once more, would love an entire series from you as Nostalgia Critic honestly.

You and your crew do a great job entertaining me. I'm older so I don't remember some very dark cartoons I saw back in the 60's as a kid. But I do love your ability to remind me of thinks and I think You are right. I saw stuff I shouldn't have. And felt stronger for it. All my thanks to You.
For me that still the darkest Invader Zim moment! Just seeing the kid's shadow without eyes, screaming... Man!
To this day, my favorite Spongebob Squarepants episode is The Graveyard Shift. It used to scare me as a kid, but I've since grown to be a horror fan and now appreciate it so much more.

Invader Zim Halloween episode. Probably one of the scariest to me.
I saw this episode at the age of, I wanna say 9. This episode gave me nightmares for a week straight, very hard to forget. The crazy thing is that I still watched the show the next day and enjoyed it, but that eyeball scene continued to haunt me. Overall experience though was pretty great.
2 Spongebob Episodes you should do: Graveyard Shift, where Squidward tells Spongebob a scary ghost story and then it comes true, and I was a Teenage Gary, where Squidward accidentally turns Sponegbob into a snail. The first is hilarious and balances the comedy with the horror in genius ways, the second is just straight fucked up.
Grave yard shift was written by the creator of Phineas and Ferb

Glad you talked about Bestest Friend instead of Dark Harvest like most people do when referencing how dark Invader Zim can be.
Having watched this show as a child, then again as an adult, I can safely say it's not really as jarring as maybe it should have been. Sure it's a little terrifying to consider, but as child at the time it wasn't much of a scare factor as a shock factor, and I personally was more curious than scared of what was going to happen.
Hey Arnold! - "The Haunted Train"
The eye thing shocked me something fierce as a kid.
This was the first episode of Invader Zim that I ever saw and while it didn't particularly scare me, it definitely left a vivid impression. I didn't really get into the show until years later, but the eyeball thing stuck with me for some reason.
This episode gave me so many nightmares as a kid!
Invader sim had another dark episode called bad bad piggy I believe. I loved this show as a kid although I watched the Dutch version, which wasn't to bad actually, compared to other Dutch dubs. But I loved the show even more when I saw the English version and I was a bit older.
Imagine how awesome Invader Zim would be if the animators didn't have to censor the show. It'd be cool to see the blood and more terrifying scenes.
The kid was supposed to die, but since he was kept alive there was a script about him returning to take revenge on Zim for not wanting to spend time with him. Apparently it would be something similar to Misery, but the show was canceled before the episode started production.

I think Samurai Jack skews too old. It was never a little kids' show.
I grew up with this show and when I watched the ending as a little kid I thought he died and the voice was more of a nondiegetic voice over.
I started rewatching Invader Zim almost a decade ago, and this episode freaked me out so much that I quit rewatching the show.
If you don't already know... the creator, Jhonen Vasquez did a comic "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" before Invader Zim. It's everything that he couldn't do on Nickelodeon.
Please review "o brother where art thou" it's a wonderful story and I think you might enjoy it.

The creator implied in the audio commentary track that Gir overlayed at the end was supposed to be like him "stirring the pot" and driving events forward from the background but it didn't really come across well.
And Keef does pop up several times again, most prominently in the Halloween episode and PLEASE do that one too because it is so twisted in atmosphere it deserves a look.
YEESH! I think that the entire "Invader Zim" show should be featured in this series.

I watched this episode as young teen with my older brother, I turned away to do something just as this scene came on and missed it. It left my brother momentarily speechless, and I was so annoyed I'd missed it! 😅
Honestly when I heard the "You don't like waffles" the second time after the fall, as a kid that didn't indicate to me he was alive actually. Even to this very day. I took it has a callback to earlier moments in the episode, like a flashback montage. Like this is what happens when you're friends with Zim, ultimately because the recording for it was the exact same. Now when I was a kid I think flat out believe he died but I did believe something bad happened. But I still replayed the episode over and over because it was funny and I liked it lmao.
