Maybe he was starving or he was so paranoid he swallowed his own treasure chest. Maybe it was a skeleton to begin with then he actually just normally passed on. We have seen skeleton creatures in Adventure Time.
Too greedy for even from him self 😅, probably though someone might take he's treasures and decided to guard it and not eat or sleep fear of someone taking his treasure 😅
This isn't too hard to rationalize. He starved to death or died of old age with his loot chest in his lap. Then as he rotted, his body slouched and the bones settled, resulting in his rib cage sliding over his loot chest.
Alternatively the king was a skeleton to begin with since there are living skeletons in Oo and we don’t really have much explanation as to whether they are immortal or not. If he had been dead recently and not a skeleton this implies he died naked with all his skin exposed which is a horrible thing to imagine
I mean he has a force field to prevent thieves from getting into his tower and because he was a thief if he left the tower he couldn't get back to his loot, so he was planning to stay there forever. He was probably so paranoid he ate his treasure to protect it and died.
The barrier was a curse, so that all of the kings loot would be completely safe from thieves, but if he left, not even he could return to it making it useless. He starved to death because he simply could not let go of his loot.
I like the idea an angry wizard (upset about having his stuff stolen) cast a spell on the castle to not allow any thieves in or out. Ensuring only someone pure of heart could reclaim his stolen treasure
1. I don't think they gave this episode much thought 2. I've always assumed he was an undead, and that watching the chaos he has created through this city is how he passes the time and letting people steal "his treasure" is part of that
I think it’s much more likely that he was so paranoid about his treasure being stolen that he swallowed it to keep it safe, like in cartoons when someone swallows a key so no one can have it. His skeleton doesn’t look like he could swallow something like that but this IS Adventure Time we’re talking about, things don’t work normally in Ooo.
I think he was paranoid, put up the barrier, locked himself in the deepest part of the tower, and then swallowed the chest, just in case. Then proceeded to die because that was a terrible idea. It would be grim, but it does fit Adventure time's grim humour at times.
in my opinion, aside from dying of starvation due to his lording over his wealth instead of focusing on his needs I feel like the king of thieves could have been killed by a family member--likely a child of his, or if not family maybe a sidekick/partner in crime, and around the time the king or whoever put the barrier up or after, they killed him. also if he was truly killed by someone it isn't too far off to believe that their hatred of the king of thieves would be great enough to shove the chest in his guts in a "you can keep it" fashion if the king stole it from them in the first place.
I have a fairly complicated theory. One thing that I can't figure out is how a city like this could possibly function for more than a couple of years or less before collapsing. But what if this society wasn't always like this? My theory is that the city of thieves was relatively normal during the king's reign. He likely used some kind of spell in order to cause his citizens to become thieving and treacherous towards each other in order to more easily control them, since if they are always stealing from each other and view each other as untrustworthy then they won't be able to rise up against him. Under the king's reign he was able to maintain the structure and existence of the city and prevented it from collapsing on itself. But after he died, with no one around to manage the city, the city devolved into chaos and anarchy, and after a year or so, the city turned into what it was portrayed as in the episode. This theory explains how a society that is made up of nothing but thieves was able to exist for as long as it did, and if it is true, then it is only a matter of time before this city collapses on itself and ceases to exist.
I always figured the force field could have be lower, or bypassed, but only by the one who cast it. So the king would simply leave on a thieving run, and lower the field to return home. I think as he aged, he stopped going out for more treasure, becoming protective of what he already had, and in his last moments, he clutched the chest to close it actually ripped into his body and killed him
I have two theories: 1) A king who became too greedy that he locked himself in knowing if he leaves, he can never reclaim his treasures. 2) A king who died trying to change the world but left his riches to the next pure of heart.
Well, you have to consider if that was the case then taking the treasure wouldn’t be considered stealing. The most likely scenario was after he paid someone to set up a barrier to protect his loot he realized if he left , he could never go back to his stash, and probably probably chose to die with his treasure then abandon it
I have a theory: ⚡️BILLY!!⚡️ Something I've been thinking about during my latest AT rewatch, is how often, and quickly, bad guys pop up in Ooo when there isn't a hero around (which also ties into Princess Bubblegum's obsession with security and her kingdom, but that's a different tangent). We don't know exactly when Billy first retired, but I would guess it was fairly close to when s1 of AT begins (hence some of the villains being fairly weak or easily beatable compared to later ones). And I think it's possible that Billy could have defeated the King of Thieves and just left without feeling the temptation to steal.
I actually have a theory as to how the king died, but be warned, it is kind of silly. What if the king became so paranoid of people trying to steal his treasure that, in order to keep it safe, he tried to swallow it and died as a result? I know that it sounds ridiculous, but it is possible that if he were suffering from some form of paranoid psychosis that he would be delusional enough think of such a crazy idea and act on it. But one question arises: how would he have swallowed it? If we are to suggest that he swallowed that chest, then wouldn't his jaw have broken off, since it would be impossible to do something like that without breaking your jaw? Well, when you look at his skeleton, the jaw isn't connected to the head, so it's possible that it fell of as a result of him brutally forcing the chest down his throat. But another question arises: how would he have forced it down his throat? Magic, maybe. At least I can't see how someone could use their own strength to do something like this.
considering adventure time's brand of humor, him either casting the barrier and then only realizing afterwards that he couldn't take the treasure out, then dying inside, is completely possible. Its also possible some wizard or magic man-like figure just screwed with him and that lead to the same result. As for the chest, it could just be a storyboarding mistake that was overlooked during the animation process, or like many beings in Ooo, maybe his mutant living self could either swallow the chest or stuff it through his belly without suffering any injuries(supported by the fact that the bones composing his chest cavity are quite different from a normal human's and from adventure time's usual skeleton design)
Maybe he actually stole from a powerful wizard who “allowed” him to keep what he stole, but put that hex on the tower as a lesson to anyone who might try and steal from him again. As for the placement of the chest, i think he was holding onto it until he died, his arms fell away, and the rats upon eating his remains, pushed the chest. I mean, assuming it’s a whole family of rats.
One thing to keep in mind with the Jake thing is that he was a notorious thief prior to Finn's adoption so maybe the magical want to steal only effects people prone to already thieves.
Theres a chance it was an illness that the king knew he might die from, and the barrier is a self inflicted quarantine. He could have cast the barrier originally to let anyone in but not let them out again into the city where the illness could spread. Knowing this, he stuffed his most prized possessions in his body, which we can't assume would kill him. This is Adventure time Jake is hiding random objects in his body all the time, maybe theres a similar thing here. After everyone in the force field had died from the illness or natural causes, I think someone changed the nature of the force field so that instead of keeping people inside the kings tower it would keep repeat theives away. But the presence of the kings treasure in the city likely set a precedented for the economy of the city. Good people would come through the force feild and steal what they could carry but they couldnt go back. So they kept stealing from each other.
Maybe the king had a right hand? An assistant who made it their role to protect his treasure by putting it and the kings corpse safely tucked away, neatly in that tower and magically sealing it. Because imagine if someone robbed the king of thieves? That would be a major blow to his status. And like.... he couldn't have put the chest in his chest himself, definitely couldn't have eaten it either. Idk its just a theory.
there are several skeleton people in Adventure time and you even have one in your video at 0:35, idk how you cant imagine that the king of thieves couldnt have either always been an undead before he created the city, or sometime while "living" in the city, became undead. You can easily stick a chest into your empty ribcage if your just a skeleton, maybe he always kept it with him there
i honestly though you were about to suggest that he cast a spell without thinking of the repercussions, realized he couldn't leave his castle unless he forfeited all his treasure, and then got so hungry *he ate his treasure chest*. and tbh i wouldn't put it past adventure time to write something like that, this show can be very silly and, to be fair, he is shown without a jaw.
The magic he put on the city may have made him so incredibly paranoid and insane that out of fear of his chest being stolen, he shoved/swallowed it into his chest.
I gotta go with the point that he just spiralled into his own paranoia trying to guard his own treasures, to the point that he either hollowed out his own chest to hide his treasure chest in it, or ate it and died from internal injuries. Another interesting thing to consider is whether Finn became a thief because he was technically grave robbing, or if the King of Thieves has an heir somewhere who has technically inherited his tower and treasures. Does taking from the dead count as stealing, scavenging, or looting? Maybe the rat technically owns the treasures because it’s the sole remaining inhabitant of the tower.
Idc how much sense it doesnt make i need a horror animation of this dude loxking himself in with a forcefield he cant leave (or he cant get back in) and going mad before decising he needs to keep his treasure as close as possible as he proceeds to cut himself open and force his chest into himself, that'd be gorey and horrifying
I assumed when watching the episode that the king of thieves used the barrier to protect his loot, being paranoid that someone would steal it for obvious reasons, but then because he himself was a thief, he couldn’t pass his own barrier to leave, meaning he was basically just trapped in his tower with all of his loot as he starved. I know that for this you kind of have to assume he was stupid enough to not realise he’d become blocked by his own barrier, but maybe someone he robbed tricked him somehow, or maybe he was just so paranoid in the moment that he panicked and just thought “I know, I’ll make a barrier to keep thieves out” without really thinking it through fully
I like to think that someone did indeed go through the barrier and killed the King of Thieves out of emotionally-driven revenge. Like the King of Thieves stole a precious keepsake from a particularly dangerous individual like an assassin and was killed before he could react hence no signs of struggle. Nothing was stolen because the killer's drive to take back the cherished item that was theirs in the first place completely negated the magic that compels others to steal.
You could make a video based on the offspring of primordials. Marceline before she was a vampire, sweet Pea and Gunthers kittenchild too. I think it could be intresting especially with how over powered they seem to be and also their incredibly long life spans as seen with Farm world Marceline and Sweet Pea 1000 years later.
Ah, the King of Thieves, he stole everything but food, hungry and weak from time basking over his treasure, he pressed his precious chest of gold deeper and deeper against his abdomen hoping to fill his insatiable hunger for loot. Until he would hunger, no more.
I always viewed it as the king wanting to desperately protect his loot, locking himself away in his tower with a barrier which would protect him from anyone who wanted to steal his stuff. But it's not like he's got a garden in there, and it's not like he's got trade, so he starved. And being the king of thieves, of course, he couldn't even get out of his forcefield himself. Maybe finally, in his hunger, he ate his treasure chest, since it's all he had. It's like an old fairy tale warning of the dangers of greed or something.
I believe he was so paranoid that he actually swallowed the chest as opposed to somehow shoving it in there, which would be extremely difficult due to the angle required to bypass the ribs. This may be due to the previously mentioned paranoia, hunger, or just a way to kill himself
Maybe he left some kind of vulnerability in the magic field so that he could get in and out whenever he wanted. But since every time he went back to his tower he risked that someone followed him and discovered how the magic field could be passed, he risked less and less to come out, untill his paranoia took over and he almost never got out of his tower and that took a toll on his healt and the died.
I would like to put forth an interesting idea. that the witch from the beginning of the episode put a spell on the kings castle preventing any theif from entering, the king of theves who was in the castle now unwilling to leave it simply starved to death. Maybe it was becase he was unwilling to abandon all that he worked for. Maybe he couldn't leave and finn could because he technically didnt become a theft until he left the barrier. Or maybe (this one is my favorite) for the first time in his life he couldn't be stolen from and he was unwilling to leave that security knowing he would never have it again.
i think it’s some kind of curse, the king was punished with the curse for being a thief. he would be trapped there while the curse influenced everyone else to become thieves and no thieves could reach him. something like that.
3:42 ok buddy you don’t know the depths of greed it’s rather easy to see him stuffing his chest into himself to keep his treasure with himself like eating it, or just actually stabbing it through his flesh to keep it away from thieves, paranoia mixed with greed and solitude is a helluva drug
I think if anything, The Thief King was paranoid and locked himself in his tower. The isolation could have driven him mad and in a delusional state figured the only safe place for his treasure was his body. I mean, he's rich but insane (at least in this line of thought). What if he convinced himself and was like, "I can always buy new organs." Add to it, that while he's not a wizard, Magic may just drive practitioners insane. Stack that on a lonely, delusional and greedy individual...
i think the barrier was put there by some sort of wizard as a punishment for being the thiefest thief at the time, essentially using his own greed to trap him inside. he simply did not leave the tower and starved to death because he knew that if he left he'd never see any of his treasure ever again. he'd rather eat his own treasure as a last ditch effort to fight off starvation instead of leaving the tower to get food and drink.
Here's an option, the king was killed, maybe by someone he crossed or someone that was betrayed, and the chest was shoved into his... chest, as a symbolic/ironic gesture. Perhaps a lover who had their heart "stolen" by the king, but the when it came time to reciprocate the king's heart was only "filled" with gold and treasure. So the lover made it a reality. One detail not mentioned here is that there is a dagger on the table right next to his arm, which either supports the theory that he carved himself up (though it's strange that he would have the strength to settle the dagger back down on the table) or that who ever confronted him he wasn't willing to fight back against. A friend, lover, ally... Etc.
I think its highly likely he was just so highly paranoid that he literally did eat his treasure chest. Or perhaps he did in fact cut open his torso and ahove it in. I think the show's creators putting it Inside his rib cage was very intentional.
Fun fact: 0:01 this is finn first human he sees yet he doesn't even care about it. Also never think this episode that such deep but now it just medded up to thinkin he showing into stomach to chest or let himself starving, but murder less likely to me cause someone should steal that chest already if you ask me
As a kid, I thought the king of thieves was the rat and the dude, who was just a pile of bones was somebody who tried to break in once and the king of thieves dealt with him but no as a adult, I realized that was dumb.😂
We have seen creatures that are significantly weirder, so what if the chest was just a part of him? it IS blood-red afterall. Maybe the chest was his "heart" or maybe it was a secret stash he made a part of his body long before he died. He clearly is missing pieces (eyepatch, missing leg), so it's not entirely out of the picture to say the chest was just there. and then he died.
This is adventure time, theres goo people, candy people, lemons magic dogs, i think the idea that a master thief with a giant chest inside his chest is not far fetched to believe it could be apart of his anatomy entirely.
I've never really thought about it before, but giving it a few minutes' thought, here's my idea; King of Thieves wants to amass a great deal of wealth, and so he establishes a city that he enchants to entice and draw in other thieves. Meaning he is either magical himself, or has access to someone who is, since magic would be needed to create the compulsion. As more and more thieves are drawn into the city, the King has his pick of treasures to steal from the other thieves, and starts hoarding it all in his tower. However, the accumulated treasure starts to become a tempting target for the other thieves, and so the King grows paranoid to protect his loot. Eventually he gets so paranoid that he banishes everyone else from his tower (remember, the King is the only skeleton we see, so nobody else was in there with him) and has it sealed to prevent any other thieves from getting in. And so he sits there on his throne, surrounded by his ill-gotten gains, waiting and watching for an intruder that never comes. Eventually he either succumbs to old age or starvation, but not before his final act of avarice, swallowing his own treasure chest to try and prevent anyone else from getting their hands on it.
It's simple, he got hungry and couldn't leave otherwise lose his treasure to the forcfeild so rather then "starve" he ate his treasure. It's a clasic trop where the individual has all the riches they could want but not a scrap of food to eat/buy.
either he starved to death and the chest, which was probably on his stomach at the time, fell down after his corpse was eaten by rats or the king of a lawless land of thieves was probably not a very sane person and after spending so much time in that land, turn mad in fear of having his loot stolen. in his delusions, he decided the best way to keep treasure from being taken away from him… is getting shoved literally into his body, getting himself killed in the process.
I find it most likely he was always a skeleton, and eventually whatever magic was keeping him alive stopped. We've seen conscious skeletons in adventure time before.
it would be cooler if he was so angry at thieves he swole his treasure, since looking the treasure inside himself is the only way to ensure you never lose it. maybe his anger was so big his death cast a spell to never allow thieves to steal from him again
My theory is that he set up the barrier, realized he’s a thief and thus wouldn’t be able to get back to his treasure, decided he would never leave, had his treasure chest on his person, then starved to death and the bones settled
I like the theory that it's just some random skeleton and not the king of thieves The king of thieves should be extremely good at hiding so not only did he manage to protect his treasure but also endured that if someone got in his identity would still remain hidden
Considering he could use magic means he was affeccted by some grade of Madness, like extreme paranoia. He/She probably died holding the chest looking out for thieves (the eyepatch gem is probably some kind of see invisibility tool). Or he/she just ate the chest to keep it safe lolz
the tower appears to come out of a building somewhat, but I do think there was just oversite and the lore isn't super concerned. I would love to see a short made about the city of thieves
If I had to guess, the king of thieves probably angered a wizard who put an anti-thief barrier over the tower, and rather than parting from his loot the king of thieves chose to starve to death
Its a damn shame the city of thieves was never really brought back for a second episode. Its heavily implied that there was some sort of spell, literally corrupting people until their greed destroyed them (its very likely that the King of Thieves, in his paranoia, trapprd himself inside his tower and he just starved to death. Hell, maybe he tried to eat his own treasure because he was so hungry)
I would wager that the barrier was created by someone else as a means of revenge. Not wanting to lose his treasure, the KoT stayed inside the tower, soon beginning to starve. As the best thief in the city no doubt everyone would know who he is and thus he would have no allies to help him out of the tower, and nobody to trust to help him get his treasure out either. After an unknown amount of time starving, the KoT eats his own treasure to hold back the hunger pains. Since gold is not food he still starves and dies. Now you might ask, how did he swallow a whole treasure chest? Well, we never actually see just how big his mouth is, we can only assume he "might" have had a humanoid mouth based on his bones. But as anyone who watches Adventure Time would know, looks can be deceiving, and it's not impossible for a character to do something ridiculous like swallow a treasure chest.
The barrier could work on computer logic. For example If person {thiefking} grant access/if not administer morality test. If not thief King passes grant access
Well if you think back to the whole "pure of heart" and that the person had to have never stolen something, it doesn't really mean that person had to be purely good. they could have been pure evil but somehow never stole anything in their life, that's until they went to the King of Theivs's castle. the king probably stole or did something to them and they got mad and wanted revenge. So they went inside his castle and somehow killed the king without a struggle but didn't take anything other than the king's life and maybe if the king did take something from them, they probably took it back as well.
I mean he likely was magical to some degree, so what if like adventure time magic works, his heart grew so full of greed and desire for treasure that his heart literally turned into a chest of treasure. Not to mention it could have been that the city of thieves was only cursed with this greed after the kings death, explaining why there is even infrastructure. The chest killing him just becoming the main cursed object, which is why all in the city desire it.
Maybe the king made the wrong person mad, and that person then tricked or hired someone to get past the magical barrier and take the king's life? Someone like Finn with a strong sense of justice and morality and no desire to steal could be convinced to end the life of a wicked king of a wicked city who has stolen so much.
I'm going to say this is how I see it what he did was he went to his place he put up the force field but realized that he's a thief and he know that he would not be able to leave and go back into it so instead of leaving he stayed there with all of his treasure and he got so hungry that he tried to eat his treasure and that's what ended up killing him
The king of thieves? [Sniffs] he died of infection 😂 The city is like an Ouroboros. It's self-sustaining in a destructive way, it'll last forever. The king's barrier most likely prevents those with poor hygiene from entering but not existing. As you said, seasoned thieves would disguise themselves by taking a shower. So it makes sense that a least 1 or more would realize this and proceed to kill the king but they probably had a dispute over it and the ensuing fight led them to exiting the castle with no way to return.
Best theory I can give you: He stole from someone magical and in return his home was cursed and he had the choice of staying inside forever and starve to death or leave and lose all the treasure he can’t carry. His greed would be too powerful and so he died clutching his wealth.
I think the magic in the city has 2 parts. One is making people want to steal things that they like, like Jake wanted to steal the red Boots Second is that everyone who successfully stole something lost the ability to protect the things they have, like how you can see people stealing stuff and then losing it and more seconds later. But that doesn't stop them from running away with their loot we can see this by Finn constantly moving with Jake at high speed. So i think the thief king has the same idea, constantly moving and stealing, one day he stole something from a wizard, then escaped into the tower, the wizard then murder the king thief and cast a barrier around it, to protect the treasure the king once had because if those treasures come out the city would be chaotic with how many more stuff to steal. And shoving a chest in another person's ribs is something that a wizard would do since we saw how wizards do really terrible things already
Don't worry, wasn't pressured, I actually got the AT itch again. It'll prob go away a week-month at most but enjoy it in the meantime. Besides it is the channels anniversary 😅
I think my theory is that the king of thieves stole everything he desired most, and nothing left to live for, so he called in someone he trusted most who was never a criminal and has never stolen anything (it could be possible thaf it could've been a relative or someone he cherished) so he tasked them with one simple thing, when he dies he wants them to place his chest inside his chest cavity and leave to forget both him and this filthy place But that's just my theory
Ooo is a dangerous nightmare for anybody unwilling to bow down to a Kingdom at least a bit. it went from a lawless wasteland to a kingdom system over a few hundred years. wizards hid their only city from the world despite their power and criminals either live in the badlands or get hunted by Kingdoms guards and adventurers. in all likelihood the City was founded hundreds of years ago as a safe haven for the scum of Ooo acting as a Thieves guild. the last king likely died of natural illness after being unable to find someone else who was worthy to take his place. setting up the barrier as a test to find a successor that could resist the citys temptation to run it. waiting on the throne to hand his successor a prize until he eventually died of old age.
My persobal theory would be a sort of Prince John situation. The king wasnt a thief in the traditional sense, but rather a man who over taxed his people without giving the proper amount back cause he cared more for money than subjects. First the lower class robbed the higher class and then threatened the crown with thievery, so he thought hed just protect Himself and payout for services by transferring income through the force field. However, he would be ucharged as thw robbing would increase without proper care of the nation, and the crime rate increasing and change mostly going to protection of himself and those closest to him (that could pay) and so he decided to hold back on paying for things lile medical services and food. Then one day he suffers a health condition that was avoidable had he simple kept with check ups and a healthy diet and died surrounded by wealth as his kingsom came to ruin. Even the guards and knights, noblemen and high classes found themselves in the endless cycle of constant disparity and stealing.
In my opinion, it was magic man Playing another twisted prank on the whole city and the king cursing them to constantly steal, making the king feel like he could trust magic man, hence why his home is coverd in magic, tricking the king of thieves into a slow painful death full of paranoia.
Maybe he was cursed by someone who he shouldn't have stolen from. Thus, the entire city he lived in became corrupted with a curse. If he left with his riches, they would get stolen immediately. And if he decided to leave, he would never be able to return to it, leaving whatever he had left inside, stay inside forever. So it would only make sense for him to stay with his treasures until his death. Where his chest ended up though, really the only thing that comes to mind is eating it.
My theory has always been that Jake stole the boots and blamed the city as an excuse for why he can't enter the barrier since he used to be a thief back in the day (he didn't know it was wrong 😬)
Wild and insane theory: He died while holding his chest. His flesh rotted away causing his chest to fall where his stomach was. His skeleton slumped down in the chair, pushing the chest upwards into his chest cavity.
he could have been bored as there was nothing left in the land that he desired to steal so he put up the barrier locking himself in with his loot and then poisoned himself since he stole everything he ever wanted leaving him with no purpose in life
This was a mystery I was going over with a gf at the time this episode came out, we kinda came to the conclusion that with the ridiculousness/weirdness of peoples mind and body in the land of Ooo, The King of Thieves more than likely swallowed the chest in 1 gulp and set up the barrier to keep his treasure away from others, he may or may not have had a way to dispel the barrier so he could get back in, if he did ok, if not that could have led him to panic and go "I can't leave, if I die they'll get my treasure" resulting in him swallowing it
Maybe he was starving or he was so paranoid he swallowed his own treasure chest. Maybe it was a skeleton to begin with then he actually just normally passed on. We have seen skeleton creatures in Adventure Time.
It’s a likely option.
i thought the exact same thing
Too greedy for even from him self 😅, probably though someone might take he's treasures and decided to guard it and not eat or sleep fear of someone taking his treasure 😅
This isn't too hard to rationalize. He starved to death or died of old age with his loot chest in his lap. Then as he rotted, his body slouched and the bones settled, resulting in his rib cage sliding over his loot chest.
Alternatively the king was a skeleton to begin with since there are living skeletons in Oo and we don’t really have much explanation as to whether they are immortal or not.

was just about to suggest this
I mean he has a force field to prevent thieves from getting into his tower and because he was a thief if he left the tower he couldn't get back to his loot, so he was planning to stay there forever.

1. I don't think they gave this episode much thought
I think as he aged, he stopped going out for more treasure, becoming protective of what he already had, and in his last moments, he clutched the chest to close it actually ripped into his body and killed him
I have two theories:
1) A king who became too greedy that he locked himself in knowing if he leaves, he can never reclaim his treasures.
2) A king who died trying to change the world but left his riches to the next pure of heart.
Well, you have to consider if that was the case then taking the treasure wouldn’t be considered stealing. The most likely scenario was after he paid someone to set up a barrier to protect his loot he realized if he left , he could never go back to his stash, and probably probably chose to die with his treasure then abandon it
I have a theory: ⚡️BILLY!!⚡️
Something I've been thinking about during my latest AT rewatch, is how often, and quickly, bad guys pop up in Ooo when there isn't a hero around (which also ties into Princess Bubblegum's obsession with security and her kingdom, but that's a different tangent).
It kinda makes sense, ive heard of people eating jewelry to avoid it from being stolen
considering adventure time's brand of humor, him either casting the barrier and then only realizing afterwards that he couldn't take the treasure out, then dying inside, is completely possible.
You can easily stick a chest into your empty ribcage if your just a skeleton, maybe he always kept it with him there
this is one of my favorite episodes, so much lore and abolutely no closure for so many plotpoints in a oneoff
i honestly though you were about to suggest that he cast a spell without thinking of the repercussions, realized he couldn't leave his castle unless he forfeited all his treasure, and then got so hungry *he ate his treasure chest*. and tbh i wouldn't put it past adventure time to write something like that, this show can be very silly
and, to be fair, he is shown without a jaw.
6:34 The Goonies. One-eyed Willy 🎉🎉
He sat on the chest and died, went straight through him, poor man.
He could've just died of old age holding his treasure
You would think but if that was the case how did the chest find it's way inside of his chest?
@@TrueLocalEnthusiast it's like you said, it's probably an animation error
The magic he put on the city may have made him so incredibly paranoid and insane that out of fear of his chest being stolen, he shoved/swallowed it into his chest.
YES!!Our king is back in business boys
1:36 Finn is the embodiment of good so maybe that magic is stronger then any magic
I love how everyone overlooks that there are a few humans in the City Of Theives.
YEAH LETS GO STEALIN TODAY
I think bandit princess is the princess of the city of thieves
Here's an idea: HOW do we know all his treasure is there? If someone did steal treasure they could only do it once, after all.
Trrrruuuuuuue
What if he convinced himself and was like, "I can always buy new organs."
Add to it, that while he's not a wizard, Magic may just drive practitioners insane.
Stack that on a lonely, delusional and greedy individual...
i think the barrier was put there by some sort of wizard as a punishment for being the thiefest thief at the time, essentially using his own greed to trap him inside. he simply did not leave the tower and starved to death because he knew that if he left he'd never see any of his treasure ever again. he'd rather eat his own treasure as a last ditch effort to fight off starvation instead of leaving the tower to get food and drink.
or maybe the chest was just on his lap when he died, still choosing to die in his tower with his treasure before ever leaving
"Something we haven't done in a long time and speculate"
*Speculated 1 and a half minutes ago about why everyone there steals*
That guy wearing a chastity belt to protect the one thing he doesn't want stolen
This is adventure time, theres goo people, candy people, lemons magic dogs, i think the idea that a master thief with a giant chest inside his chest is not far fetched to believe it could be apart of his anatomy entirely.
TrueLocalWeirdo is back
I've never really thought about it before, but giving it a few minutes' thought, here's my idea; King of Thieves wants to amass a great deal of wealth, and so he establishes a city that he enchants to entice and draw in other thieves.
"are you pissed that the analysis video was essentially about nothing? YEAH ME TOO"
~the man who makes freely available content
Another piece of evidence pointing to him not being murdered, is the fact that there is a dagger on the small table next to him, entirely untouched.
either he starved to death and the chest, which was probably on his stomach at the time, fell down after his corpse was eaten by rats
or the king of a lawless land of thieves was probably not a very sane person and after spending so much time in that land, turn mad in fear of having his loot stolen. in his delusions, he decided the best way to keep treasure from being taken away from him… is getting shoved literally into his body, getting himself killed in the process.
I like the theory that it's just some random skeleton and not the king of thieves
The king of thieves should be extremely good at hiding so not only did he manage to protect his treasure but also endured that if someone got in his identity would still remain hidden
For example
If person {thiefking} grant access/if not administer morality test. If not thief King passes grant access
Leeeeets Gooooooo we are soooooo back!!!!!! Cheers my man 🎉🎉🎉
Well if you think back to the whole "pure of heart" and that the person had to have never stolen something, it doesn't really mean that person had to be purely good. they could have been pure evil but somehow never stole anything in their life, that's until they went to the King of Theivs's castle. the king probably stole or did something to them and they got mad and wanted revenge.
Jake could store a chest inside his chest without hurting himself
I love this! Great video ❤
My own head-canon says a wizard thief used some kind of transporting magic to swap something the king swallowed with a chest in his chest 🤣
Maybe the king made the wrong person mad, and that person then tricked or hired someone to get past the magical barrier and take the king's life? Someone like Finn with a strong sense of justice and morality and no desire to steal could be convinced to end the life of a wicked king of a wicked city who has stolen so much.
I like the Skyrim music in the background
I'm going to say this is how I see it what he did was he went to his place he put up the force field but realized that he's a thief and he know that he would not be able to leave and go back into it so instead of leaving he stayed there with all of his treasure and he got so hungry that he tried to eat his treasure and that's what ended up killing him
Someone used shrinking magic on the chest and put it in da kings drinking cup. The spell wears off. Causing severe organ trauma, killing the king.
The king of thieves?
[Sniffs] he died of infection 😂
The city is like an Ouroboros.
Hey is that song at the start of the video from Slay the Princess?
That's the first thing I noticed
Best theory I can give you: He stole from someone magical and in return his home was cursed and he had the choice of staying inside forever and starve to death or leave and lose all the treasure he can’t carry. His greed would be too powerful and so he died clutching his wealth.
I think the magic in the city has 2 parts.
One is making people want to steal things that they like, like Jake wanted to steal the red Boots
Second is that everyone who successfully stole something lost the ability to protect the things they have, like how you can see people stealing stuff and then losing it and more seconds later.
You dont really have to do it... I know it was the reason why people subscribed, but dont feel obbligated to do it
Don't worry, wasn't pressured, I actually got the AT itch again. It'll prob go away a week-month at most but enjoy it in the meantime. Besides it is the channels anniversary 😅
I think my theory is that the king of thieves stole everything he desired most, and nothing left to live for, so he called in someone he trusted most who was never a criminal and has never stolen anything (it could be possible thaf it could've been a relative or someone he cherished) so he tasked them with one simple thing, when he dies he wants them to place his chest inside his chest cavity and leave to forget both him and this filthy place
But that's just my theory
Love it
We're so back baby
Honestly, i think its just a cool location to put a chest. And we are all thinking too much
In my opinion, it was magic man Playing another twisted prank on the whole city and the king cursing them to constantly steal, making the king feel like he could trust magic man, hence why his home is coverd in magic, tricking the king of thieves into a slow painful death full of paranoia.
Wild and insane theory:
He died while holding his chest. His flesh rotted away causing his chest to fall where his stomach was. His skeleton slumped down in the chair, pushing the chest upwards into his chest cavity.
Nah the thief king ate the chest, man said "nobody's getting this treasure nom nom"
he could have been bored as there was nothing left in the land that he desired to steal so he put up the barrier locking himself in with his loot and then poisoned himself since he stole everything he ever wanted leaving him with no purpose in life
I also think he ate his treasure chest
This was a mystery I was going over with a gf at the time this episode came out, we kinda came to the conclusion that with the ridiculousness/weirdness of peoples mind and body in the land of Ooo, The King of Thieves more than likely swallowed the chest in 1 gulp and set up the barrier to keep his treasure away from others, he may or may not have had a way to dispel the barrier so he could get back in, if he did ok, if not that could have led him to panic and go "I can't leave, if I die they'll get my treasure" resulting in him swallowing it
Thief princess stole just his title in a death match
