      I understand what you mean, Miss X. I think most films depicting black people tend toward the melodrama, the comedic, etc. Barry Jenkins employs a very Asian aesthetic, which focused on the souls of these characters. So I totally understand your point.

    I really loved your analysis, ScreenPrism. But you missed one major symbol - water. Juan takes Chiron to the ocean where he learns how to swim. The ocean can be seen as God, as Juan, the father figure. Fast forward to when Chiron goes home, and there's an epic change done with such subtlety - the TV is gone. It's the beginning of chaos in his home. So what does Chiron do? He boils a pot of water, pours it into the bathtub and takes a bath, a crown of foam on his head. It's a beautiful and subtle cry for help, without the traditional melodramatic flourishes. Then the water theme, becomes, ice water, after Chiron is bludgeoned by Kevin. The ice water, later, introduces Chiron, in act 3, as Black. What do you think?

      Also water is very symbolic in black lit
      It is in water where enslaved people were crossed and where some sought freedom from bondage
      Water is an allusion to baptism and rebirth as well as the image of moses parting the sea and the deliverance of the Jews from Egypt was an inspiration to the black community in the US

      ezwar99 in the video they suggest that moonlight refers to your true self or inner self. Sometimes it shines through Black's persona, like in the classic man scène and in the end when Little looks back at us. I'm not shure why specifically moonlight symbolizes your inner self though. And I feel like didn't really understand the meaning behind the story either. Good question.

    • @StarlitSwamp
      @StarlitSwamp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Daan, I like your explanation of how the moonlight comes back throughout the movie to sort of symbolically underlight Chiron's true self. I too believe that the environments related to the beach, often drenched in moonlight, powerfully convey a sense of deep peace he longs to return to.
      If I may suggest a different approach (because this thought just popped into my head and I don't know if it's any good), I tried to think of the saying "In moonlight, black boys look blue" in context with the scene it's from, where Juan then goes on to tell Chiron that he has to decide for himself who he wants to be. The way I see it, moonlight can represent the filter through which society paints different groups of people, and the veil of deceiving appearances that keeps individuals from really seeing each other for what they are. Others will put all kinds of labels on you based on what they see and what they're told, but they can only tell you who to be if you've internalized that image and put it on like a mask, like "Black" after too much pain made him snap. As this brilliant analysis (the video) pointed out, what the characters project in that story often isn't representative of their inner lives at all. They build up facades and bottle up their emotions to protect themselves from a world that might otherwise crush them, but they lose themselves in the process.
      That's all just my personal interpretation of it and I could be wrong, but I like to think that at the end, "Little" Chiron's look has something challenging, as if he's asking "How do you see me now?", because he's no longer afraid whether we think he looks blue under the moonlight or whatever else we were lead to believe about him just by looking on the surface; he's finally grown mature enough to know and accept himself the way he was at that innocent age before life molded him into something else, and which is still part of who he is deep down despite the changes he's gone through.

    • @ineverswag
      @ineverswag 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Daan moonlight is basically dark and usually with us human being we like to hide that part of ourselves that we think society will not accept. So moonlight is sort of when you're not seen (in the dark) you get to decide who you want to be hence looking blue

    • @grace90xgracer40
      @grace90xgracer40 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even tho it's a flawed analysis. Why is it that a heterosexual Nerd who later becomes gangster is something that he BECAME. But a homosexual who becomes the same way it's something he's "PRETENDING" to be.

    • @grace90xgracer40
      @grace90xgracer40 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Aus Tronaut I'm just saying the same logic of either putting on a FACADE or BECOMING someone else should be applied to both the heterosexual and homosexual male...
      Black is who he BECAME in my opinion the thug persona is his new identity because he behaves in a new authenticity. He's not necessarily repressing anything but rather he became something else.
      I have a hetero cousin who was similar enuff to Chiron as a child and was a innocent soft little cry baby but grew up and got more muscular bass in his voice etc.
      NATURALLY this happens, I don't see why heterosexuals interpret it as hiding rather than evolving by adaptation the same way heterosexual males do.
      No Thugish male was ever a thug when he was 7 years old and sumtimes not at 14 either.
      I'm just saying Black should be seen the same way whether he's hereto or not... It's not like he was ever Feminine to begin with.

    • @grace90xgracer40
      @grace90xgracer40 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Aus Tronaut innocence is actually the very foundation of all homosexual stereotypes...
      And the Analysis here is talking about nothing but Shy Chiron mixed in with his homosexuality.
      And my original comment was targeted toward a part in particular where Black was referred to as a Fascade... I bet if Chiron was heterosexual his Black side wouldn't be reffered to as a Fascade or him repressing his true self as opposed to Growing Up from Boy to Man.

      Chiron is an astrological placement based on the Centaur from the Greek myth. I'm astrology, Chiron is the wounded healer. It's placement begins and childhood and points to an ever renewing wound to the person, that they must figure out how to ameliorate at various stages of their life. Each time the wound will appear at a different frequency, but always the same at its root. The catch is that the very wound afflicting the person is one that they find release from in their aid of helping others. The myth of Chiron truly takes root after he receives the immortality. After he's immortal, he happens upon an incident in which he's accidently struck by a lethal arrow. Chiron, who cannot die, is then fated to suffer eternally... Hit by an arrow made to kill, yet he is built to survive these deaths over and over

    It's so relieving to read the comments in here... I swear, the internet is full of rage towards this movie. People are claiming that this is part of some agenda, ignoring the fact that Moonlight it's mostly based on a true story. And, ironically, this rage usually comes from the black community. It saddens me how history repeats itself, and people always find some demographic to discriminate, even when, in the past (and even in the present, in some cases) they were discriminated too. At least we've got movies like Moonlight, that show us that despite all the bad things that happen in the world, there's still hope of finding love and tenderness in other people.

      Juan David So true this what I don't understand black people were and are still marginalized and persecuted in the US but they turn around and do the very same thing against a part of their demographic (black LBGT) and they justify this with religion and then their want the world to support them when they scream "Black Lives Matter"

      the hate all comes from the Bible and their religious upbringing and esp. the need to maintain that tough assed Macho image that is so important in the community. Sadly, the Black communities do NOT recognize gay people as being a minority like themselves. Also, sadly, most people are parents in the community are never going to see this film but hopefully the gay teenagers will.

      People hate to "tras" their real life problems on someone else. It makes them feel better, not for long though.
      The hate they send to the next person will either send it to someone else or just ignore it.
      The majority ignores it. However it's always the minority who speaks the loudest, thus being the reason it seems like so many folks out there are filled with hate.

    Pretty good, but I would hope people who view this don't see this as comprehensive in regards to what makes Moonlight a complete film. You touch on a lot but something that is really relevant is the influence of artists that Barry Jenkins took in to have a vision like he did for moonlight. The smaller details too, things like how the strings were composed for example. The score has influences of chopped and screwed hip hop in it, a deliberate choice Jenkins asked the composer, Nicholas Britell, to incorporate into the sound. The reason being is the mood that chopped and screwed remix gives a song is this feeling of gloom, despair, sort of hopelessness. And that's because the sound in a way mimics what it's like to listen to music when you're high off opiates (lean in the case of the pioneer of the style, DJ Screw, who died of a opiate and other drug overdose). It's an ugly, unsettling feeling and the music reflects that.
    So you got a song like "Middle of the World" that shows this pure scene with Juan and Chiron. Chiron is being taught how to swim by Juan and he gains a small understanding of what it means to be a person after he talks to him. The next new song we hear is "The Spot" when Juan is back in the cut and where he finds Chiron's mother. The song is reusing "Middle of the World"'s strings and mixing them around, kind of skipping them and having them be slowed and distorted. In effect, it's been chopped and screwed. Of course, it's not that pure scene anymore. You're in this scary, dark and uncomfortable area. Yet Juan is present in both scenes. It's quite a shift. You hear "The Spot" again as well in the transition to Black when he wakes up from the nightmare of when he mother yelled at him, yet this time you can hear her scream "don't look at me".
    Additionally, the appearance "Classic Man" when Chiron arrives in Miami and takes Kevin home is a chopped and screwed version of the song. And I don't need to even go into the strange relevance that song has to the movie because Pitchfork did it best. I'll trust you to look up and read the article by them, but I'll leave you with the two closing paragraphs: "“Classic Man” is a song of character assessment, if nothing else, but it's not to be believed. “Classic Man” is not the jam of a classic man, but a man who wants people to believe that he is a classic man. The song has the effect of someone haranguing an airline desk attendant, but confirming that he’s a nice guy over and over. How self-assured can you be if you’re running up to everyone on the sidewalk to tell them you’re self-assured?
    The whole thing is ultimately a bit of a bummer. There’s a depressive echo in “Classic Man” that I didn’t notice until Moonlight. Just after all of the “my name calling all night” and “I know many women want to be in my life,” there’s a coda: “Even if she go away, even if she go away.” Even with all this urging, there’s an underlying unease that maybe you can never be a classic enough man to keep someone forever. As if a classic man even exists. In sum: Moonlight is a movie that makes you notice all the melancholy there is to be seen in the whole entire world, even in “Classic Man.”"
    Again, this is just one small feature of what made this movie "complete" and in my opinion, a perfect film. But it shouldn't be glossed over and I hope people take the time to understand and appreciate what went into this film. Look into things like the cinematography, Jenkins' influences that he draws from people like Wong Kar-wai and Taiwanese New Wave artists and how they influence the movie, just all these little details that I couldn't name in just this small comment. It's lovely and an achievement, and it sure as hell got a fire in my ass to write seriously and pursue my passions in film.

    • @javigalindo8560
      @javigalindo8560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Beautiful analysis, I noticed that too, the chopped and screwed "Classic Man" and how far away Chiron, the real Chiron, is from being a "classic man". There's a subtle kind of despair and melancholy to it, the ache to be seen as something you are not.

      Another noteworthy deatail is how he filmed black skin. They all look luminous. If I recall correctly that was a deliberate aim, they would glisten with sweat to make their skin look like smooth black obsidian on camera. It's beautiful. Various scenes throughout the movie can be used as examples of this.

    • @Auntkekebaby
      @Auntkekebaby 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Yeah. I will also add that after Juan takes Chiron home, Chiron enters his "home" only to find his mother about to get high with some dude. One Step by Aretha Franklin is playing in the background. You ever have a song ruined by a moment?
      Cut to Black (Chiron) entering the diner to reunite with Kev. One Step is playing again. Kev says, " Ha ha...You're here now man. That's all that matters." It's like saying that he's here in his metamorphasis. He's coming home to Miami and to understanding and forgiving his mother. He's coming home to Kevin because he can't hide from Kevin's eyes. Kevin SEES him. He's coming home to the truth about himself. I feel that the song is redeemed by this new association.
      Lyrics:
      I'm only one step ahead of heartbreak
      One step ahead of misery
      One step is all I have to take
      Backwards, to be the same old fool for you
      I used to be
      I'm only one step ahead of your arms
      One kiss away from your sweet lips
      I know I can't afford to stop for one moment
      'Cause I'm just out of reach of your fingertips
      Your warm breath on my shoulderKeeps reminding me
      That it's too soon to forget you
      It's too late to be free, can't you see?
      I'm only one step ahead of your love
      I try…

    I got something totally different from this movie. Chiron's lack of love as a kid left him searching for it from anyone. It showed that he was still stuck in the past (little boy scene) at the end of the film. He was waaay more into Kev than Kev was into him. And he just couldn't let go. His mother was sick, twisted, and mentally ill. And his lack of any love or support really took its toll on him. Going through the gangster phase. I could tell how uncomfortable and unconfident he was. Bulking up, gold fronts, loud music, and shiny cars can never cover up the truth. He was desperate for somewhere to belong.

    I just noticed the symbolism of ice ; the physical transformation of Chiron into Black coincides with Chiron plunging his head into ice cubes, what he apparently keep doing every morning after his beating.
    Water is the symbol of the emotional world, of emotions’ free evolution inside someone (that’s why Little learning how to swim and loving to be in tepid/warm water is symbolically important) while ice is the rigid/fixed and most cold state of water, which symbolizes total repression of them by Black.

    I watched this movie today! And what a beautiful movie I saw. The acting, cinematography, music and colors are all perfect. I cried for Black many times and felt his loneliness and shame.
