      But also uplifting. You see him processing everything, remembering, hurting, loving all over again. You remember his father’s words, reminding him to love and and let it hurt. To accept of all the pain and find the courage to do it again. It reminds me of the song ‘the heart is a muscle’ by gang of youths

    The fathers' speech was phenomenal and deserves all the credits it gets. But I feel the mother is very underrated in this film, in my opinion she is a very important part of all this.
    She is the one who told Elio that Oliver likes him ("perhaps more than you do").
    She is the one that suggested that Elio should go on the trip with Oliver to Bergamo to spent some days together.
    And after she picked Elio up from the trainstation she gave him a understanding comfort-touch when Elio was crying his eyes out in the car.
    Later on the piazza where mum got out of the car, Marzia walked up to Elio and telling him she feels sorry that he is hurt. At first I was wondering how she could know that as Elio was just picked up by his mum from the station, but then I remembered that when Elio and Oliver got on the bus for their trip, Elios' mum invited Chiara and Marzia to come to dinner. We don't know what mum has told her, but it clearly made Marzia understand that Elio would get his heart broken and as Marzia felt the same when Elio broke hers, she could relate to that.
    So all praise and kudos to mum!

      @sl8026 4 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      @@anthonyl.9059 Hi Anthony. No, I think the father was talking about a past love with a intensity similair to what his son had with Oliver. That kind of special overwhelming love where you were reluctant to act on for whatever reason (too young, too insecure, disapproving parents and friends, you name it), can be relatable to everyone, man or woman.
      It might have been that there was a man involved (not according to the author of the book, btw). It might have been an (older) woman, who knows? But back to your question whether the father is gay: in my opinion it doesn't make any difference as I don't really believe anyone is 100% "gay" or "straight". One can call themselves gay or straight, but I think that it's just human to always have a slight attraction, interest and/or curiosity for the "other side".

      It was interesting how even though it's a gay relationship, it's kind of in the background. The love story, the way he's obsessed with Oliver, the awkwardness of first love, etc...its all relatable to anyone. I hope the fact that it's a gay relationship doesn't keep too many people away from this movie, because it's beautiful. It could open some minds. I hope there are sequels. Elio is younger, yet he is the more emotionally aware of the two. He is lucky to have incredibly caring and sympathetic parents; Oliver has to hide his sexuality because his father 'would have taken him to a correctional facility'. The scene in the town square, where Elio first divulges his feelings to Oliver is shot so that the physical space between them becomes a corollary to their inner worlds. Elio says: 'I thought you should know', which Oliver reacts to with fear and unease. The end of the film tells us two things. Firstly, that Oliver has retreated into a lifestyle of pretending to be straight, yet he clearly still has great affection for Elio and holds dear the time they spent together. Secondly, it brings us, inevitably, into Elio's heartbreak, which reminds us, again, that he is unable to stifle his emotions, and that he is in touch with his real and authentic self.

The last scene of "Brokeback" may be one of the most affecting moments on celluloid, but how clueless does one have to be not to have known it was Hammer at the end calling to say he was getting married? Go checkout "Weekend" for anyone who likes this kind of "realistic" emotional film that digs deep. It is a similar film and more raw in some ways where the director for Call me chose to go with aesthetics rather which is cool too. And the "Before" Trilogy too. Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight.

      Luca seems intent on doing it as a trilogy over many years (in real time). I'm scared that we may never get to see the end of this story if it plays out like that... I really want to see more of Oliver and Elio - but I NEED them to get together. Seriously. I can't go through this again, it will break my poor little heart!

    • @amstarism
      @amstarism 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      The book plays out as a series of vignettes through time when they meet up in later life. They both seem to love each other, and remember their time together fondly, but there's never any suggestion that anything more can happen between them. Elio says that he doesn't want to meet Oliver's family because it will upset him. It's just all kinds of sad.
      Whilst on one level you feel worse for Oliver because he's not lived a truthful life, the fact that no partner of Elio is mentioned leaves you with the suggestion that Elio has been forever damaged by his love for Oliver. It's a fucking brutal ending.

      Zuzanna Mochniej No, I don’t think so. Colors themselves also have emotions. Generally speaking, yellow is the color of happiness, joy and blue is the color of sadness, depression. This story is so poetic, making it very deep. From the dialogues and even a glimpse of the scenes mean so much more. Especially since this movie was from a novel, it makes it a lot inexplicable. These kinds of stories are the ones who are not straightforward so that you have to think for it yourself. When you said “you’re reading a bit too into it” sounds offending to some poetic people or rather, observers because you basically correct them based on your comprehension. I get what freedom of speech is, I do and I’m also doing it now. So, no hard feelings to anyone.

    This movie left me speechless and honestly heartbroken yet there was a sense of peace. For two people to be so in love and not be able to live that reality left me with a tragic feeling. The director said that it was not a sad ending and I understand what he is saying, in a sense it was not but it is hard to let go of what could have been. A GREAT FILM 10/10

      Skatealex: Watch the movie again, and focus on two things: (1) the Professor's words of advice to Elio after Oliver has gone, and (2) the very last words in the film which are Elio's mother calling him by his own name. Both suggest that life does, indeed, go on and that there really can be relief from heartbreak.

    • @jmaraf7741
      @jmaraf7741 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      rogermcall: I don't know if you're gay or not, but it does hits harder when you're gay. We longed for a video of gay love with a happier ending to give us hope that it can and does happen. When Oliver phoned Elio to tell him he's getting married, it felt like he rubbed salt into Elio's open wounds. I felt so bad for Elio that it spoiled everything that went on before this. I didn't pay good money for a video to end up feeling sad, hurt, and disappointed.

    • @rogermcall
      @rogermcall 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I am in no way trying to diminish the pain you may be feeling but merely suggesting that you are losing sight of the broader reality by concentrating on the here-and-now. If I could add (3) to my previous comment, I would suggest that you "pay good money" to buy the book (or even the audio version of it) which is the basis of the film. Whereas the movie ends on a depressing note, the book offers a more optimistic view of the relationship between Elio and Oliver. It portrays the two of them 20 years later, and upon re-reading it I have concluded that it is not as pessimistic as I originally believed. Yes, Oliver is married; but there are many indications that Elio remains his first *real* love, just as Elio is Oliver's. I understand the author has actually said that his intention was to portray a love that is enduring-- maybe even everlasting-- despite the changes which sometimes appear to be irrevocable. I guess my original comment was a plea for you NOT to dismiss this incredible film simply because it ends in a way that disappoints you. There are many, many precious moments on the way to that ending which make it a film for the ages.

    I loved Timothee Chalamet’s performance. It feels so real. I was so annoyed at how long it took for them to be together. I noticed that that is what it’s like for many people. The waiting and the not knowing if that person likes you or if they are just a flirtatious person. I loved this film.

I'm not discussing the actors here, I'm talking about the original story.

    • @TayDaRock77
      @TayDaRock77 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      sx1sajor dude I’m not entirely sure of Oliver’s sexual orientation, but we can’t dismiss the possibility of him being gay just because he is engaged. Many gay people have gotten married to members of the opposite sex because they felt that’s what they should do. In the movie, Oliver even points out that Elio is so lucky to have parents who support him despite his sexuality and says that he isn’t as lucky. Maybe that serves as an explanation of his marriage to a women?

    • @TayDaRock77
      @TayDaRock77 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      sx1sajor dude although, I’m not dismissing the possibility of him being bisexual. I think that Elio is bisexual, and think that Oliver could be as well. I think that’s some of the genius behind this work. It doesn’t specify this, because the labels aren’t what’s important here, its the love story and raw emotion of these two characters, who just happen to both be men.

    • @tiawilliams5690
      @tiawilliams5690 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sx1sajor dude That's not accurate. Oliver tried to hit on him early in the movie at the game. Elio didn't get it and pulled away. Oliver even explains that Elio's reaction made him feel like a molester so he backed off completely.

    At first I thought it was odd for a 17 year old falling for an older 20 something person and vice Versa. Then I realize that this is the age where you are finding yourself. It’s the edge of adulthood. Most of us had a thing for someone older than us at some point… It’s a beautiful story about finding love and capturing that unexplainable wonderful feeling that most of us only experience once of twice in a lifetime… Some people are never able to reach this bliss. This story does a great Job capturing the feeling of love and and the unexplainable freedom and beauty and pain that comes with it. This story is about being alive and the human ability to feel…

    I read this somewhere and it was so beautiful, I had to share it
    According to Greek mythology, humans were originally made with 4 arms, 4 legs and a head with two faces. Zeus thought they would eventually overpower him so he split each of them into two humans, with two arms, two legs and one face. Our whole life is a journey we travel to find our other half. When Oliver says to Elio, "Call me by your name", he means that he has found his other half and they are back together, the way they were meant to be. They are one and the same so when they call each other by their own name, it signifies that the other person completes them.

    How Beautifully told and edited, the material lends itself on a movie that will stand the test of time. Months after seeing I find myself gravitating to anything that's Elio & Oliver. At my age I had forgotten what it was like to first fall in love. This was a gently crafted and beautifully orchestrated Cinema that truly captured all of loves delicacies. For me even more as in 1983, I was Elio as a young adult. I had many of the same experiences. To have them unfold in such a carefree and uninhibited manner just before the AIDS epidemic when being Gay was beginning to be widely accepted even to say fashionable. To all come crashing down. This does remind me of a simpler time even with all the Gay AIDS Backlash it was the best of times for me. I suppose my first love saved me from AIDS. Many say the movie was sad, but It was truly a beautiful memory for me of that first love. First loves usually end with hurt and pain but, we all yearn and want to find it again to feel all it's emotions is to love. I loved your explanation as it captures everything I have felt. You Nailed it! Thank YOU!

    Freshman year highschool, family friends came to stay at my house for a couple of weeks. They had a son three years older than me that was my playmate when I was younger. We didn’t have any room to sleep in the house for me so I slept in the hallway floor. I felt a tugging on my shirt and It was him and he took me to his bed where we both slept. Our interactions that followed consisted of cuddles, long talks, stroking fingers on each other, and little kisses. Nothing sexual. He made me feel loved and that it was okay to be me. The most vivid memory was him grabbing my hand, and I asked him what was he doing and he replied with “I don’t know, but it feels right.” After he left, I waited for him. Four years go by and I find out he’s engaged. Out of all my pains I’ve experienced, heartbreak was the worst pain I’ve ever felt.

(And for the Truffaut shoutout - growing up in the 60s and 70s and immersing myself in foreign films, I fear that a new generation only knows "BergmanESQUE" and "FelliniESQUE" and "TruffautESQUE" without even knowing what the direct reference is.)

      Racquel Rock I just watched this movie for the first time last night and I can’t get over the beauty of it....I’m mad at myself that I didn’t watch it years ago when it came out. But I am grateful to have found it now.

    i watched this movie for the first time last night and i just finished it a second time 24 hours later.. i cried so much more the second time having a better understanding of the true tragedy and meaning of this story, which i think is especially unique about this in that the nuances and what is left blatantly unspoken are more than enough to express the meaning more than any words could have. i thinking this movie has changed me forever. this movie can resonate deeply with nearly anyone, not just gay guys, from young to old and especially those who have experienced similar heartbreak and inevitable task of painful acceptance. no other story has touched me as deeply as this one has and i’m bracing myself for the heartbreak that the book will bring me next.

    Oh wow. I couldn't agree more with this.
    (Now I will tell you irrelevant story)
    I used to be in the same situation as Ellio, at the age of 16 I fell in love with someone 18, it's my first year in High school and his last year. It's my first love and at the peak of my puberty, my emotions were just unpredictable. There's love, lust, jealous, hate, angst, I feel it all in a short 2 month. Then he decide that he couldn't be with me because his family find out and disapprove of homosexuality. I was devastated, crying everyday, losing my appetite, yet now I learned more from the experience, I accept that I once loved him and he once loved me, I do take on some trait I liked from him, and I grow up loving myself more, accepting myself for what I am. I don't suppress my feelings, I let it out and make it improve as time goes by. Now I'm a 21 years old guy who's never been happier, and with traits I've never possessed before. So yeah, never deny everything you are or you feel. It'll slowly kill you.

    I really wished they didn't make a sequel not because I don't think it's good, but because the ending is perfect.
