He's such wonderful gentleman, I think his 15 minutes of performance were a looming presence throughout the film, you missed him on screen. That's the power of a great actor. He really gave the character weight and pathos.
Mahershala is only 15 minutes in the movie...and yet,his facial expressions and dialogue are the most remarkable aspect of Moonlight. He is a strong weight in the main character personality and the plot.
Reminds me of when Anthony Hopkins won for his phenomenal LEADING role in The Silence of the Lambs despite only being in the movie for 16/17 minutes. Goes to show that how long you were in a film doesn't equal how effective you were.

This was an especially tough year since pretty much everyone who was going to be nominated was. I was never big on Aaron Taylor Johnson in "Nocturnal Animals", nor Hugh Grant in "Florence Foster Jenkins", so i'm at least glad Shannon and Hedges made it in instead of them.
2016: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals). I would have really loved if Ben Foster (Hell or High Water) and Liam Neeson (Silence) got nominated cause those were some of the best performances of last year.
anyone who didn't think he deserved this award. im sorry but go watch that scene where little finds out that Juan was the person that sold drugs to his mom. if you dont feel the immense pain emoted by Ali in that scene then u really dont understand how great his acting is. great acting is not always about monologue/dialogue.

The scene where Chiron asks Juan whether or not he sells drugs is one of the best acting performances ever. The pain and sorrow on his face when he tells him yes is so heartbreaking and a true testamant to how great of an actor Mahershala is. This guy is truly an up and coming talent and I can't wait to see him in True Detective next year.
I feel the Oscar for Judi was a 'oh shit we've never given Judi an Oscar let's nominate her for one'. The Oscars have done this with so many people; Martin Scorsese, Julianne Moore, Leonardo Dicaprio, Morgan Freeman, Whoopi Goldberg.

Ali came into the film, stole the show, broke hearts and made such a haunting impact. Bridges and Patel were great but neither was 'supporting'; they were co-leads within their respective films. Hedges was very strong, Shannon was okay, but in my opinion Ali was the clear choice here.
I dont understand how Dev was "supporting." Lion was completely about him. He and the younger version had the same amount of screentime. They definitely thought theyd get the easier win if they put him in that category.

I remember seeing Mahershala on House of Cards and there was something about him. He commands the screen and the viewers eyes and ears with his nuances and calm demeanor. I can't believe he got an Oscar so quickly but I am so happy he won. One of the best Oscar speeches I've heard in a long time
His performance as cottonmouth in Luke cage was oscar worthy. In seven episodes he was everyones favourite character, AND they had to kill him off to advance the plot. it went downhill from there,.

I met Ali multiple times when he was filming true detective, and can honestly say he is 100% a class act. He was raised right and is easily more respectful and genuine than most people you will run across.

Moonlight was one of the most life changing movies I've watched in my life. Mahershala Ali made his character, Juan, not only a mentor to Little but a close friend he could count on no matter what. He deserved this Oscar 110%.
What I love about M. Ali is his journey into acting. He didn't grow up wanting to be an actor, attending prestigious child acting studios, etc. He graduated with a degree in communications, and was passionate about basketball. It was when he saw a friend perform in a play when he was finally "bitten by the acting bug" so to speak. He didn't start acting until he was 27 and never appeared in a film until he was 30, but his obvious passion & drive for the craft drastically outweighed his lack of experience. Now he is one of America's most refined and talented screen actors. It just goes to show that heart, attitude, passion, & determination will always be more important than privilege & experience.
Not only is he a gifted actor, but he is also a genuinely humble person and incredibly well-spoken. I look forward to seeing more of him, especially in Blade.
He and Christoph Waltz have a great score of 2 nominations and 2 wins. They are also very similar because both of them are so modest, down to earth and incredibly talented.
His role in Moonlight is one of the most dominant performances I’ve seen on screen. 15 minutes on screen and he created a presence that could be felt throughout the whole film. All together Moonlight was just a beautiful movie, especially in the editing that went into that masterpiece.
I dont know about you, but i was having a feeling that Mahershala Ali was going to win this category. For me the winner was between Dev Patel or Lucas Hedges, but i was marveled that he won this award, specially that he already became a father before this ceremony. So, i congratulate him.
What makes his role so spectacular is that his presence is felt in every second of the film following his character's departure. The character of Chiron shapes what it means to be a man around his vision of Juan, and to see him grow as a character following this guide is simply mesmerizing.
what kinda' frustrates me is that they cut out the clips that they showed durring the real ceremony. i personally liked that a lot... but complaints aside, Mahershala earned this SO hard.

He was honestly the best part of the movie. It's worth it. I overall give the film an A-, he really elevated the positive aspects of the film by devoting himself as the father figure this kid truly needed in his life. As much as ppl wanted to see more of him in the film, it was sufficient to give you the subtlety of what Chiron goes through and what he gets exposed to. In time of despair, the shelter that was offered could not have been better available.

Mahershala Ali's talent in Moonlight is something I still think about all these years later. My heart broke in the theatre. I kept waiting for his character to appear in a flashback, anything just to have another glimpse of him. The way Ali embodied Juan made him seem like a real person, whose loss I mourned along with Chiron. This win was well-deserved.

The scene where Chiron asks Juan whether or not he sells drugs is one of the best acting performances ever. The pain and sorrow on his face when he tells him yes is so heartbreaking and a true testamant to how great of an actor Mahershala is. This guy is truly an up and coming talent and I can't wait to see him in True Detective next year.

Ali came into the film, stole the show, broke hearts and made such a haunting impact. Bridges and Patel were great but neither was 'supporting'; they were co-leads within their respective films. Hedges was very strong, Shannon was okay, but in my opinion Ali was the clear choice here.
I dont understand how Dev was "supporting." Lion was completely about him. He and the younger version had the same amount of screentime. They definitely thought theyd get the easier win if they put him in that category.

I remember seeing Mahershala on House of Cards and there was something about him. He commands the screen and the viewers eyes and ears with his nuances and calm demeanor. I can't believe he got an Oscar so quickly but I am so happy he won. One of the best Oscar speeches I've heard in a long time

Moonlight was one of the most life changing movies I've watched in my life. Mahershala Ali made his character, Juan, not only a mentor to Little but a close friend he could count on no matter what. He deserved this Oscar 110%.

What I love about M. Ali is his journey into acting. He didn't grow up wanting to be an actor, attending prestigious child acting studios, etc. He graduated with a degree in communications, and was passionate about basketball. It was when he saw a friend perform in a play when he was finally "bitten by the acting bug" so to speak. He didn't start acting until he was 27 and never appeared in a film until he was 30, but his obvious passion & drive for the craft drastically outweighed his lack of experience. Now he is one of America's most refined and talented screen actors. It just goes to show that heart, attitude, passion, & determination will always be more important than privilege & experience.
Not only is he a gifted actor, but he is also a genuinely humble person and incredibly well-spoken. I look forward to seeing more of him, especially in Blade.

All together Moonlight was just a beautiful movie, especially in the editing that went into that masterpiece.
I dont know about you, but i was having a feeling that Mahershala Ali was going to win this category. For me the winner was between Dev Patel or Lucas Hedges, but i was marveled that he won this award, specially that he already became a father before this ceremony. So, i congratulate him.
If he wins for Green Book, he'll be the 7th actor to have won twice in the supporting actor category.
I really hope he wins again. That movie is amazing and his performance in it is great.

Honestly, Dev Patel was incredible in Lion. I've never cried so hard watching w movie. But I'm glad Mr Ali won.
Bridges or Patel can be a worthy winner but Ali deserves it. For limited screentime but he leaves an indelible impression is something difficult to achieve. Hedges and Shannon, their nomination is their reward.

He was honestly the best part of the movie. It's worth it. I overall give the film an A-, he really elevated the positive aspects of the film by devoting himself as the father figure this kid truly needed in his life. As much as ppl wanted to see more of him in the film, it was sufficient to give you the subtlety of what Chiron goes through and what he gets exposed to. In time of despair, the shelter that was offered could not have been better available.

Mahershala Ali's talent in Moonlight is something I still think about all these years later. My heart broke in the theatre. I kept waiting for his character to appear in a flashback, anything just to have another glimpse of him.
The way Ali embodied Juan made him seem like a real person, whose loss I mourned along with Chiron.
