Moonlight at first glance seems like a really disturbing, sad, gut wrenching, depressing film you can only watch once and probably cry when it’s done, but it so happens to be one of the most rewatchable, satisfying, beautiful films of the century so far.
You’re absolutely right, it’s such a tender film, made with so much love. Terrible things happen to Chiron, but he also gets the love he deserves. Moonlight also contains one of the single best ensemble performances I’ve ever seen.
I rewatch it at least once every 2 months. Rarely do we have a very good representation of LGBTQ+ in films even in this day and Moonlight is one of the best.
I disagree he made the public laugh at least once, while scrambling to think what to do on the spot: go for a remorseful approach or dissuade the tension with jokes or what
This was bound to happen eventually. Beatty panicked and gave the card to Dunaway - he should have just said he got the wrong envelope. They were both put in a terrible, awkward situation but Beatty redeemed himself by explaining what happened. At least it was not dull.

This is such an awkward video to watch now. I feel badly for everyone involved, including the La La Land Director. He handled it with grace and class, though. Kudos to Moonlight for the win.
It's also extra uncomfortable to me watching the La La Land producers give their speeches, since some of it seemed very rehearsed ("Here's to the fools who made ME dream!"), obviously they had written something out beforehand like most people to combat the nerves but man, that's really kinda hard to watch them get up there and actually go through with it, unaware that they hadn't really won. It's like seeing them practice their Oscar speech at home lol, feels like you shouldn't really be watching.
Aleksandr Boylan That wasn't the director, that was one of the producers. Damian Chazelle was the director, he was standing at the back with the cast and some crew. The 3 producers were the ones at the mic.
That moment when you notice Sam L J. Tear up... Because common even though... He gets the most interesting roles, He still spent his career playing a supporting actor... (which may have also been due to the black-supporting stereotype, not to mention he never won anything big) and now he witnessed a Great Entire Black Cast movie win the Oscar! The best category! I can tell those eyes love it!
To be fair they had won 6 oscars that night so it wasn't the end of the world. That being said, I agree Jordan Horowitz especially was absolutely upstanding in being clear, gracious and attempting to give Moonlight it's deserved moment.
La La Land was a beautiful film and fun and amazing and no one is debating that, especially the Academy. You can see that in the amount of other awards that they won. But Moonlight was a masterpiece with cultural and human impact like no other film I'd seen in a while. It told a story that was SO important, especially in this current day and age, and the Academy giving it the respect it deserves was so significant and it certainly brought me and many others to tears.
After Faye Danaway announces La La Land as the winner and the producers of the movie are shown, you can very clearly hear Warren Beaty in the background saying "It says Emma Stone".
When they read out "La La Land" they knew it was iffy, but I'll bet they were DESPERATELY HOPING - as I would be too - that maybe La La Land just happened to be the winner anyway! A 1 in 9 chance at the roulette wheel of non-embarrassment.
@@jeffk1722 Nobody blames Warren or Faye for what they happened since it wasn't their fault anyway. But I also strongly disagree with people who criticize Jordan Horowitz. He did his best to correct the terrible mistake that happened and he did the right thing. Jimmy Kimmel was far more disrespectful when he yelled "Warren, what did you do?" directly into microphone, but nobody talks about that. Jordan Horowitz at least deserved public recognition for what he did that night if not get an honorary Oscar. Since this situation doesn't appear anywhere in the rules (it was supposedly added afterwards, though), producers of La La Land could legally refuse to give Oscars up after they were announced as winners as nothing could legally make them give them up, but they did the most honorable thing and did it anyway.
This was such a bombshell moment in pop culture and I really wish this mistake wasn’t made because the creators of Moonlight really should’ve been able to appreciate their win without the controversy that came with it
What's funny is Emma Stone was the only Best Actress nominee in a Best Picture-nominated film. Had any of the other four women won Best Actress, Warren would be staring at a card saying Elle, Jackie, Loving or Florence Foster Jenkins and he would have been more confused
Why Warren though? He was confused. Looked for a second envelope. Went to Faye for clarity. She read it out loud. You can hear him saying afterwards "It says Emma Stone." And then he was the only one one who tried to clarify. I don't see how he is to blame. He was just a victim of it all.
ALL I can think about is if Faye READ the entire card first, and they both would have said WE GOT THE WRONG CARD on the mic, and someone ran out with the right card. It would have been a funny meme and that would have been it. Instead it became this nightmare/PR disaster.
@@ricardo_sotorbs Warren is very mildly at fault for not saying anything but what was he supposed to do, really. That is so fucking awkward to be up there in the first place with the wrong envelope and have no idea what to say, and then it would take even more guts to stop everything after Faye went ahead and ruined it. It's squarely the fault of the guy who was tweeting backstage when he should have been paying attention, and then Faye should have thought twice. Warren did the best he could.
I love how everyone says that the only reason Moonlight won was because it was about minorities. Meanwhile, Fences was about a minority as well and it's been generally agreed upon that it's chances of winning were slight. Maybe, just maybe, it's because of its complex characters, amazing script and phenomenal acting but sure, blame everything on SJWs. It's so easy.
Fences was about black people. Moonlight was about GAY black people, so it wins 2 to 1. I'm just kidding, but seriously, I simply can't agree with what you are saying. Amazing script? Structure-wise it was one of the worst Oscar winning scripts I've ever read. Complex characters? More like bullsh*t characters which weren't thought through. Phenomenal acting? Okay, I'll give it that one. But this is still just my opinion, not necessarily the truth. (Also those three points are all true for Manchester by the Sea as well, so no wonder people blame the whole thing on SJWs.)
All points acknowledged. The structure could've used some work, I can't deny that, but on the whole I felt it was far more important and smarter than La La Land. But that's just my silly opinion.
You're right but I don't think ''Best Picture'' and ''Best Screenplay'' have anything to do with each other. 1998 is the perfect example. Shakespeare in Love totally deserved the screenplay Oscar but in no way should it have been given the best picture award, that should have gone to Private Ryan. Now I don't agree that Moonlight deserved that best picture award, but if I have to choose between best picture and best screenplay, I'd sooner give it the best picture one.
I actually think The Thin Red Line was the best film of 1998. Spielberg unquestionably deserved his Best Director award (the Normandy Beach invasion is one of the greatest things ever filmed) but the slathering of sentiment at the end and truthfully most of the bits that wasn't the the invasion just didn't work for me. I definitely agree that Shakespeare in Love deserved Best Screenplay. So literate and witty.
Dennis, the constitutional peasant my sister, who is pretty liberal, said this “the only reason why moonlight won was because it was gay and it was black” now that shocked me. I guess La La Land fans had it coming.
The most incredible, awkward, surprising moment in the history of ANY awards show! Unforgettable! And the best picture (of many years) won, even though La La Land was a great film too.
The academy got it right. Moonlight is a film of the ages, it will go on to be a timeless piece of cinema. La La Land was hardly well acted and don't start me on the singing and dancing. It's voyage ended that night. It will be forgotten.
Iris West-Allen you do realize that La La Land made 442,565,068$ worldwide compared to Moonlight which made 27,854,932$ worldwide? If any movie is going to be remembered, it's La La Land. The only thing people will remember about Moonlight is that it robbed La La Land of Best Picture.

Definitely one of the most memorable moments in Oscar history. It was insane watching this live!
Dude it wasn't "insane".
Seriously? Really? The biggest fuck-up in the history of the Oscars... Nah, dude... "insane" was the perfect word choice.
OS_boy Nah. "Insane" is not enough how to describe this embarrassing moment. Oscars don't have such a prestige as it used to have.
I was watching it live with a friend, constantly complaining how we should be going to sleep because the show was so so boring. Then this happened and we started screaming at each other. Hahahahaha this moment made that year's Oscars.
I’ll usually be on Twitter during live events and I remember that this year folks tuned out as it seemed La La Land would beat out Moonlight. That was probably the craziest Twitter moment to follow as the folks live tweeting were shocked and folks who tuned out earlier were rushing to find out what happened.

jimmy kümmel was so shady. and i feel like no one picked that up. “You should keep it anyway” “this is very very unfortunate “ “we should just start handing Oscars out to everybody” Even the producer picked up that shit, and that’s why he said “i would be happy to give this to my friends from moonlight” Stay WOKE
I think the “this is very unfortunate comment” came more from a perspective that it’s unfortunate there was a mix up and the cast/crew of moonlight didn’t get the full moment they deserved. As for the other comments, I’m sure that was him trying to lessen the tension everyone had- you could see even the audience was in shock and the cast of both movies went from excitement to disappointment(& vice versa) real quick so I think that was him trying to make people laugh. Was it an appropriate comment? Prob not looking at it now, but he’s a comedian, that was his first instinct and I don’t think he meant it to be shady. @East african 123 like I could understand if they call each other that when they're in bed or some in-joke... But why that need to qualify your wife like that AT THE OSCARS OF ALL PLACES??
Most Whites are born blue-eyed. So it's not that special or out-of-the-blue (no pun intended)
The whole thing sounds wrong to me, a little perverse, like his wife is some shiny trophy he won
@East african 123 Why indeed! How did he think those without blue eyes would interpret that statement?
Goes to show that White supremacy isn't just burning crosses, but also subjecting everyone else to Aryan beauty standards. And minorities in the West are constantly bombarded with shit like this on ads and the media!
@East african 123 Alas, the point of programming is that the programmed are not aware they're being programmed - and if they become aware, they'll rather remain plugged to the programming.
For too long, White people have judged whether or not something is racist based on what they think counts as racism, which is an incredibly convenient standard for them. And more often than not, white people see racism as an issue of *manners* more than anything else, rarely acknowledging systemic microaggressions like *to my blue eyed wife".
@Jeepman89 hehe as if him being Jewish makes it less awkward.
If the man were any other ethnicity or race who said that about their wife at an award ceremony, it would still be suspect. Why draw attention to your wife's eyes at the Oscars of all places? No one there is in on the joke (if it even counts as a joke). Just thank your wife and exit the stage lol, who needs the details of your wife's eyes!

Since this situation doesn't appear anywhere in the rules (it was supposedly added afterwards, though), producers of La La Land could legally refuse to give Oscars up after they were announced as winners as nothing could legally make them give them up, but they did the most honorable thing and did it anyway.
This whole clip deserve another Oscar for being the funniest moments at Oscars.
And this isn't the first time something like this happened.
*Oh man, what I would've done to have Jackie nominated for Best Picture instead of Hidden Figures.*
Imagine what would have happened if the last award had been Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Warren would have to read a card saying Suicide Squad.
Luan Augusto 🤣
@@Luan1993Augusto Now that really would have been UNFORGETTABLE 😂.
Order of fault, from most to least:
- Person who misplaced the envelopes;
- Person who designed the cards;
- Faye;
- Warren.
Why would the person who designed the cards be at fault? The cards are very clear, Warren just got the wrong card shoved into his hands.
@@huh968 because guy who created cards should write on them for what award it is
Moonlight earned it, and I cannot imagine the flurry of thoughts and emotions the entire cast was feeling when the mistake was revealed.
No it didn’t it was disgusting hacksaw ridge should have won
I feel your pain, _La La Land._ I was just enjoying my new J. Crew catalog, then realized it was my neighbor's, so I had to give it back.
😀😀😀
what a hell is 😀😀😀 ?
😂😂 white ppl problems
Lmfao!!!
How did he not read moonlight
Yep. Not only was Moonlight the best picture of the year it was the best picture in MANY years.
I'm sorry but I beg to differ. Moonlight was good and symbolic, but nowhere near as good as the best picture winners for the past years. Sorry.
Moonlight is the 4th highest rated film of all time on Metacritic. If someone says it's the best film in years, I think that's a fair opinion.
Craziest Oscar’s moments of all time..
Will Smith: Hold my beer Jada
They absolutely ruined it for Moonlight. How disrespectful
G A HOW DISRESPECTFUL?! Imagine being told you won an academy award then getting the award, saying your speeches, then being told you didn’t win and hand over the award to the actual winners. THAT happened to la la land and THAT is disrespectful
Salty Sifu Urie lets just agree it was a shit time for everyone.
Salty Sifu Urie la la land is so mediocre, it felt so good to see that
andre fernandez la la land is anything but mediocre. The music is beautiful, it tells an amazing and compelling story and has some of the best actors of all time. If we’re taking about mediocre movies you should address moonlight
Salty Sifu Urie cmon man both movies were really good you dont gotta bring down moonlight
Extremely classy from the La La Land guy. Imagine hearing you won best picture and you have to hand it off to another movie because of someone's mistake. Congratulations to Moonlight, a groundbreaking movie and a well deserved best picture winner.
That guy really thanked his blue eyed wife lmao
Blue eyes are superior to brown eyes.
Maybe he has two wives and the one who helped the most has blue eyes
Riding home must've been real awkward for his blue eyed wife knowing she didn't do enough. 😂
It's incredible how Will Smith turn this moment from being the most memorable to only one of the most memorables.
It's so humbling to be standing up here with hopefully still the La La Land crew....No okay they're gone...
