Betaflight setup guide from Joshua Bardwell: • Betaflight 3.3 Ultimat...
Say hello to the RCExplorer Bicopter. Yes, Bi as in 2! This copter only uses 2 motors and 2 propellers to generate lift.
Pretty cool eh? But you don’t get much control with just 2 motors, you need something more; Servos! Pitch and yaw are controlled by tilting the motors in either the same or opposite direction
This makes the RCExplorer Bicopter look freaking fantastic flying around. In full forward flight with the motors at full tilt, it’s reminiscent of the V22 Osprey.
The RCExplorer Bicopter is designed to look as badass as possible, and I think we succeeded. The frame is entirely made from high-quality 3k twill weave matte finish carbon fiber. This makes the RCExplorer Bicopter frame lightweight, durable and worth drooling over.
Just picture yourself rolling up your flying buddies and pulling this thing out. Guaranteed instant +10 to street cred and coolness (guarantee not guaranteed).
The sharp-looking backend not only looks like a formidable stabbing weapon, it also makes the copter fly better. The weight is distributed more evenly and the leverage arm is longer, which should make the pitch axis more stable.
This thing is not like a crazy locked in quadcopter that obeys your every command. No, you have to fly this the way it wants to be flown. It is not easy and it will take some getting used to. Tuning is tricky, fiddly and might vary greatly depending on the electronics used (Pre-tuned starting PID’s available for the recommended electronics kit.). You can get yourself into weird situations very quickly and it currently doesn’t like flying backwards.
What it does like is forward flight (both slow and flat out), lazy turns and hovering (as long as it’s not drifting backwards). You can do tricks as well, but be ready for some fun recovery manoeuvres. It is a very different flying experience compared to most other crafts.
Building the RCExplorer Bicopter is also a bit of a challenge. Designed to be as cool looking as possible lead to some awkward spaces. Cable management skills will for sure make things easier, but you will probably still want to curse us a couple of times during the build.

David... as I went out to do a little flying today with my 5” quad, I was reminiscing on all your old videos, which are the ones that specifically sparked my dream of flying fpv. That Domain du Planet ( or whatever ), the funjet fpv flights out over the water looking sideways.
    Good times...
Thank you David... and all the best to you. 🤓🤘🏼

The thing with tilting a rotor as a control input is that gyroscopic precession will also cause a roll force 90 degrees ahead in the blade rotation. The anticlockwise rotor will impart left roll when pitched forward, the clockwise rotor will impart right roll.
In your current configuration, yaw left is accomplished by sending the right rotor forward and left rotor backward. The right rotor is the anticlockwise rotor, and the left the clockwise, so the craft will roll to the left while the rotors are being moved. This is cancelled by commanding a little roll right, but by slowing the right and speeding up the left, the dissymmetry of torque will yaw left - and this is continuous while the input is being held.
In the video, you did say you were thinking about reversing rotor directions. I think that's worth playing around with. After all, with ACW on the left, commanding left roll will also yaw left with the dissymmetry of torque, and that's already the direction you're yawing to coordinate the turn.

Quick tip for everyone not knowing this: use nailclippers to trim zip-ties. They cut flush so you don't have that nasty piece of plastic with the razor sharp corners sticking out. Especially with the slightly bigger zip-ties. Keeps you from wondering where the bloody smudge on your model/workbench/tools comes from. Oh, and BTW: this is how ALL instruction videos should be! Nice!

Would a Chinook design be an option as well? Because it has less weight on the sides, as such the servos don't have to compensate as hard? I mean I've seen those lumbering beasts in action and they are quite nimble for their huge size.

  • @masterdon3821
    @masterdon3821 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes. Bicopters are the future,as it becomes easier to make tilting parts.
Osprey is unstable, because a lot of weight is outside the center of gravity. But something like a Chinook with wings and tilting propellers will be very stable
