When I was in the UPC church, I always thought it was interesting with the amount of sparkles some women would wear on their clothes! You can’t put a sparkle in your ear, but you can have 1000 of them all over your sweater! 😂 Oh, and there was some hairstyles that the ladies told me they took over two hours to do! Modesty?! I think not.
Those of us who finally find our way out of upc are so emotionally damaged that it’s scary. I don’t speak for everyone, just myself and others I know who got out. I finally realized how much closer I felt to God and leaned on Him more instead of church family and the Pastor. I finally know God. I know His love for me. I am still concerned for family members still in it but at least now I know God is in charge of that and not the pastor. My job is to continue praying for them and loving them. Thank you for that video.
I left the UPC years ago because of so much injustice was done towards my family. My daughter was married to The Pastor’s son and she was accused of doing what his own son was doing. But it caught up with him after he himself became a pastor and the UPC took away his pastoral license. Sadly, there is a lot of abuse in this church. Thanks for sharing this video, God bless you ladies 🙏🏼
This was SO needed; thank you, DeAnna and Jen, for giving a voice to so many who’ve been violated and silenced within the UPC (and other organizations like it) culture. God bless you both!
It’s so interesting how he never mentions anything about the men who perpetrated the SA but DID mention everything the woman did to warrant this. Another example of how in the UPC the responsibility is ALL on the women. Even in this extreme. Victim blaming at its absolute worst. This is objectionable and it’s so sad how many young people worship this man like he’s God
Wow!!! Excellent video. As a former upc member, I witnessed and experienced the fashion quo if you please. Even the guys at Youth Camp wore the latest suits and shoes costing several hundred into the thousands... I looked back and asked God to forgive us all for staying up with the Jones'. As far as SA victims within church, it happens so much more than we can imagine, and it is sad. I pray for the victims and I pray for the perpetrators to be held accountable! Excellent video
I left the Holiness movement years ago. They had a lot of the same rules. Everything was wrong, televisions, sports, dance, etc.. It just led to idleness which of course nothing good comes from that. My family grew spiritually after we left the Holiness Movement. Our life is richer and fuller since we left.
When I think back on all the fun I missed out on with friends when I was young, mind you nothing bad but just not being allowed to go to a movie. Stuff like that. I’ll never get those years back. But it’s ok because knowing the love of God now and feeling free makes me happy. I will always serve the Lord with all my heart. Thank you everyone for sharing your stories.
Even if people are wearing dresses, suits etc..., we're still wearing the fashions of the world. Even the unbelievers and fake Christians look as UPCI or other actual Christians. Jimmy Swaggart, politicians etc all wear similar clothing and basically look the same. So, how can anybody tell the difference in the natural? It can't be done
All their rules are so hypocritical! They can’t wear a diamond bracelet, but can have a diamond watch…because a watch “serves a purpose” …they find ways to get around their own rules
Telling young women that they can guard themselves from being sexually abused by simply wearing longer sleeves, a higher neck line, and a longer skirt is building up a false confidence that makes young girls think that as long as they dress in compliance with the rules, they are safe from sexual abuse. Urshan is a legend in his own mind. I attempted to listen to the full Q&A session but was unable. So much of what he said was too disturbing. He just sounds too much like a crackpot.
The legalism in the interview breaks my heart. Those young people are hearing that if they don't live up to this standard then they are "lukewarm" Christians. Whoever can give up the most worldly pleasures will win God's affection. Jesus said his yoke is easy and his burden is light. The UPC/WPF "gospel" is not about Jesus - it's about rules. A theology lacking any hope or reassurance - a theology of misery.
Always look forward to seeing your videos , you definitely help people see and make the right choices for themselves.they may never see a different view otherwise, thank you ! Looking forward to your next one ❤
I was raised Apostolic & the dress style you are talking about is fairly on point. Youth conference wasn’t about, in my opinion, the principles being taught the home churches but who is there and who is going to eat where and when. Some outfits were what I would categorize more as a prom dress. The Apostolic church that we left about 4 years ago had ‘progressed’ over time to the point of allowing women to wear pants/jeans, earrings, makeup, men ‘could’ wear shorts and have beards & I heard many a ‘sermon’ where youth conference dress was commented on with laughter. One of the only messages that I remember from any sermon ‘preached’ at a youth conference was a minister screaming “Listen to me, all you purple headed freaks….” Oh, at the same conference a group was in the alter speaking in tongues and such and they were told to return to their seats so service could move on. Allow the Spirit to fall freely, but only if it fits the schedule I guess 🤷♀️
Great video! Thank you both. My old pastor in the UPC used to come down on men for porn. It would have hit home more if he had juxtaposed it against the burdens they place on women. I think that would be an excellent video topic.
Love this. I love wearing dresses and skirts. I feel more comfortable in them. But I do not believe it's a salvation issue and tell people that. They can not say the woman do not follow the fashion of the world, it is a lie. There are some women who wear dresses and skirts in the church and are as tight as can be. Which is more immodest than wearing pants.
Honestly I just left the UPC and I’m so drained by the whole standards and rules. I asked questions growing up to both my parents and the ministry and got answers that were so vague. To only have some of those rules not applying anymore. I feel like I missed out on my childhood and teen years because of a strict upbringing. The day I left this time around I feel drained but lighter too. I’ve talked with a few members before my departure and they said they too were unhappy but this is all they know. Women are held to the highest standard while men just need to be the head of the household. Are we not all equal in Gods Eyes?
I visited sev UPC churches since I left years ago and went in dressing kind of similar to them. They only knew and accepted me by my clothing. On one of the warmest days the Pastors wife came in wearing a Mink coat!!! Really??? It was too hot for it that day so it was definitely all for show.. Most of their attitudes were aggressive, snooty and unfriendly to be exact. It was definitely not what I experienced when I was going for the 30 plus years that I’ve been in it and I’ve been gone from that organization for over 10 years. Wow it made me think why are these people staying in this religion and the environment is like this. I won’t ever go back in one.
I’ve literally had somebody turn their nose up at me after I left the church and they saw me at a local store. I feel they’re such a spirit of pride and those churches too
If we are not subject to the fashion of generations shouldn’t all upc dress like they are in the 40s then, I mean that’s when the upc was started right. Also them laughing about sexual assault made my stomach turn 😒
Modesty goes both ways. Men with their legs spread & they think nothing of it, yet I DO! Gals in America may have grown up checking out the zippers & butts...so UPC men..let those 3 pointing fingers point back to you! I would feel so grateful if they would bring cover ups to cover up their 'exposures' or even longer shirts!
I had a Sunday School teacher that became fired up by saying “I don’t care if they’re showing Bambi, you don’t go to the movie theater!” However, like you ladies shared, it was absolutely fine to own not only Bambi (lol) but movies with much harsher ratings…& have them on repeat in your own home. We had youth service on Friday night so it was definitely very obvious it you “made a poor choice “ and went to a local football game. Needless to say, I was not allowed to go to football games. Don’t even get me started on missing school dances, prom… My brother and I were pretty much the only kids @ our Apostolic church that didn’t also attend the church’s Apostolic school. I always felt very torn & I think I spent high school in various degrees of depression. I didn’t fully fit in @ school or church.
I knew a girl growing up when I was in the UPC who literally had every single disney movie that came out on vhs, her dad was an associate pastor and out church believed no movie theaters, never made sense to me even as a kid.
I can see how that would be a huge struggle as a teen. I have often felt the same way...a misfit. The church doesn't want me (I'm too non conformist and outspoken), and I don't fit in the secular community either. It's much easier to deal with as an adult.
I always wondered why women can wear a skirt just past their knees, but the boys were not allowed to wear shorts just past their knees… and I live in Florida, so that’s a little ridiculous in my opinion. But those were the rules. We had to abide. 😔 😡
Florida is terribly hot!! I agree with you! There are churches that the men and women have to wear sleeves below their elbows all the time (not just on the platform or something), the men NEVER wear shorts and God forbid a beard. Definitely no jewelry, not even a plain wedding band. I was told that you just act more married. Seriously?! I wear modest clothing because I'm more comfortable, enjoy it, and feel it is what the Lord wants from me. My church is very good about moderation. I also do not see where standards, unless backed up by scripture are a salvation issue. I DO NOT believe that it pleases the Lord for women to look like a pole dancer. The Bible does say to come out and be separate. However, yiu can go so far the other way that you are looking like FLDS followers. The holy spirit will guide us and teach us, and start showing us what is pleasing to the Lord.
To say that upci modes of dress reflects eternal principles is laughable. Basically the holiness standards match the trendy look of American society of the mid 1900s, the exact time and location the upci was formed.
Deanna, go look at the history of the WPF. It’s a bunch of old white dudes who wanted to be general superintendent and they caused so much division. We were glad they left.
Regarding minute 46:00 I knew two different couples in the same church in Central CA. They lived directly nextdoor to one another. One couple was brunette, hispanic, and the other was a white couple with blue eyes and sandy blonde hair. I lol'd when I heard that the white guy used to date the hispanic woman, and the brunette man used to date the white girl, and get this- their Pastor, who lived nextdoor to both of them thought they were mismatched and asked the men to switch and THEY DID! Lol
Ask him to show you Bible verses about the Jewelry, and then read those verses in context…. In one verse in Ezekiel, where he talks about makeup and jewelry right before that they talk about bathing… Are we not supposed to shower or bathe? And Isaiah mentions mirrors! Context context context!
Also, you can go to any WPF conference and that’s what they preach one. I’d be willing to bet they have sermon titles in a bowl with talking points. It’s the same thing every time
I guess it's job security, if you think about it. Without all their weird rules and unique requirements, there would be no need for them and the saints could just go to the closest Bible believing church to their house.
I liked many points you both made in here, and shared this video in my own page! One thing that you said at the end, Deanna Jo, is so thought provoking because it is what the church teaches…”salvation is harder to acquire in the UPC for the women than it is for the men.” WOW! That’s not what the Bible says, but it sure is what is taught. 🫣
Some of the Apostolic folks are the most bizarre people ever and most all have a double standard. In I Tim 2:9 it talks about women NOT having braided hair, yet nearly every UPC women I know, has braided hair. They wear it on their jobs and even to church and nothing is ever said. Also, the men in the video are not wearing ties, which in the UPC, that was unheard of for a pastor or preacher to not wear a suit without a tie. Now I see pastors, going to conferences with a suit and no tie. it’s so hypocritical. Also in the video the guy says we don’t go to ball games on Friday nights which I know for a fact, the local UPC church here sponsors a booth on Friday night ball games at our high school. Nearly all the church attends. Like I said, so bizarre!!! I’ve also seen holiness women dresses so immodest and showed WAY more than a nice pear of slacks. SMH. The traditions of men have made the word of God of none effect. Good video!
These answers, analogies, and anecdotes are so tired! I heard the same things decades ago. Clearly they see the church as just another competing organization or else they wouldn't be using comparisons to validate it. What happened to following the Spirit within us rather than joining 'Team Jesus'? Was the woman at the well in church? Was the demon of Gadarenes in church? Replace him using 'God' with Pepsi Cola or Amazon and see if anything uniquely gospel stands out.
I use scripture to debunk some of the UPC teachings. Forcing people to adhere to unbiblical teachings is bondage. Believers are free indeed! Free from the penalty of sin and free from the law/legalism. I also address spiritual abuse. Abuse is inappropriate for the body of Christ and should be rooted out. This video addresses the WPF. Not all of my videos are UPC focused, but that is my background, so that is what I speak most about. Not everyone will connect with what I am doing, and that's ok.

They weren’t held accountable in my old church…the church supported him and paid for his lawyers 😡

Lol right or flashy high heels 👠
Fabulous video. Ya'll need to continue the collaboration.....just great! The absurdity of Nathaniel Urshan is shocking.
Urshan's response shows how "well" he deals with SA victims. SMH. Great job breaking this down, ladies!
Explain then, Nathaniel Urshan, the young girls and women who have been sexually assaulted in the UPC organization who were dressed "modestly"?
Right! ❤
Or the young daughter that was SA by her dad, and the church turned their back on her and wholeheartedly supported him
Amen. Yes. I have family members and friends who were SA in their church.
And let’s not forget the ministers who abused little boys and threatened to ruin their life if they spoke up. So sad
Dresses un modestly does NOT warrant them to be abused. PERIOD!
Great video! Thank you both.

✅ very good job ladies
I would like to share my testimony with you i came out of the UPC
It seems the women go to church for a fashion show more than the word.
Most of them go trying to find a husband 😂😂
And to see who has the longest hair, as they flip it over the pews and it lands on my feet 🤔🙃
@@ke6264so funny the only single man … no teeth No thanks 😱
the pastors wife, being lady so-and-so, and the pastor is Bishop isn’t that putting themselves above their congregation?
The guys can be pretty into their look too...the latest suits, the trendiest haircuts. Their special event looks are pretty showy.
So good! I wish my husband would listen.
To say that upci modes of dress reflects eternal principles is laughable.
Basically the holiness standards match the trendy look of American society of the mid 1900s, the exact time and location the upci was formed.
Marge Simpson hair do!! 😂😅😂😅😂
I don’t like the guilt trips and the coercion to praise if it’s not loud enough or long enough
Deanna, go look at the history of the WPF. It’s a bunch of old white dudes who wanted to be general superintendent and they caused so much division. We were glad they left.
Oh yes! That's often the case for a lot of denominations and organizations. Everyone wants to be the leader.

Oh. My. Word! lol That's insane! The level of brainwashing it would take to convince people to do something like that!
I got my husband to budge on the hair and pants. He won’t budge on the jewelry. I was like stud earrings aren’t showy.
Ask him to show you Bible verses about the Jewelry, and then read those verses in context…. In one verse in Ezekiel, where he talks about makeup and jewelry right before that they talk about bathing… Are we not supposed to shower or bathe? And Isaiah mentions mirrors!

The Apostle Paul used sports analogies for the Christian life, but now these folks can’t go to a ball game?
That's a good point!
Same goes for independent fundamental Baptist
That was horrible they did that!
If I had a dollar for every time I heard the cracks in the dam story….
Haha!
So funny about your feet sticking to the floor. 😂😂😂
I wish I had seen this apostolic runway 😂 My former church could have lead the Apostolic runway I’m sure 😂
