Although I am not a professional, I have successfully cut down trees that are at least 2 feet in diameter with a handsaw and some work gloves. Usually, I go with a different shape of wedge and I am almost always cutting trees at an angle. that being said, this is definitely a useful video for beginners and there is a lot of great information.

One thing I do, to ensure I am not injured in case the trunk decides to splinter, is I wrap the trunk, above where the cut is, with a tow strap. Skipped the most exciting part when the tree begins to crack and you have to quickly pull the chainsaw bar straight out as not to hit the wedge and then back away.
@@paull2937 you realize we have millions of overplanted trees crowding out other trees, choking the forest and destroying biodiversity all along the states due to poor logging practices? We need more trees in non tree areas, and we need to thin out and get back to a healthy forest and ecosystem in many other places.
@@dropndeal yes but it helps other people who may see the comment. Forests shouldn't naturally look like matchboxes you can barely walk through, normally there are trees of all different ages and that naturally causes SOME spacing but not on the level of how choked out a lot of national forests are
+Joseph Fann call a tree service that has a stump grinder- generally its pretty cheap- as long as your yard wont get trashed in the process- from the equipment
Depending on its size. Larger tree stumps are ground using a grinder and then the roots are left to rot, while smaller ones are dug out. In the old days they used to burn them out but that can be a bit dangerous.
Binding is the pressure on the cutting tool. When it comes to cutting down trees, as you are cutting into the tree the stability on the side being cut is diminished, so it will naturally push down. That pressure is unwanted because instead of cutting into the tree, you are fighting the weight of the tree. Sorry for the poor explanation but it's one of those things that is a lot easier to demonstrate visually.
@@rivahkillah There are two forces on a tree, compression (squeezing) and tension (pulling). When you cut into a part of the tree (mostly while limbing) that has compression the tree will squeeze back together against the bar of the saw and bind the saw. There is also compression while making the face and back cuts from the weight of the tree pressing down on itself (and the bar). wedges are extremely important while felling to prevent binding.
A professional sawer would never make a 70 degree notch cut on the face , it wastes to much wood by the time your done , that's how it was when I was in the woods or you were sent packing , wood is money
the video was good, as your comments, cuz i need to take down a few trees, luckily not close any house or power-line´s and for me the tree´s needed to be cut down are not gonna give any money, only BBQ wood and space for the added runway for our club. But i appreciate comments from ppl within the trade. then i can plan better and are better prepared before i start the chainsaw.
I'm a logger from Northern CA and we use "Humboldt" undercuts here so as to minimize wood waste on the butt log. But for a homeowner/amateur these instructions are fine. The only thing I would add is for the undercut I personally do the horizontal cut first then the angled cut as I find it's easier to aim the direction of fall and the cuts seem to line up more accurately than doing the angle cut first. Everyone is different but most guys I've seen do the horizontal cut first.
Ive been cutting trees down for about 6 months now, i know that doesn’t sound like experience but I’m usually at it 5-6 hours at a time, I never cut the face cut like that. I usually go in the width of the bar then for the top cut starting a few inches higher nothing like how high they did in this video. & the back cut, 2 inches above from the face cut & I go all the way till the tree starts to fall, I don’t see the need of wedges when you can just cut 85% through the tree & it’ll fall
you use wedges because the tree may sit back while performing the back cut, then you will be stuck and have to take the power head off and call a buddy in shame to come help. Or you will have to muscle the the tree over, which doesnt always work. use wedges. felling trees is serious business and far too many people take it lightly.
@@brianbaker359 yeah it can chip them. But a rubber mallet would be better if u were worried about that. On many trees a wedge would not have enough mass to drive wedges aswell. I think it's not near as good as an axe but it might work on small trees.

Just curious to know why the escape path needs to be at 45 degree to the tree felling line in opposite direction?
Because that’s the safest place. It won’t roll towards that direction, it’s not falling in that direction, and it won’t kick back in that direction if the hinge fails.

There must be 50 ways to fell your lumber
Just break out an axe, jack
Whip out the saw, y'all
Use a little wedge, sledge
And set that tree free
The answer is easy if you take it logically. :)
