Exactly! I was thinking to myself "Ooo, replacing my back fence and driveway gate could be a fun and simple process for me my frat brother." But when I saw cement and a power auger, I was like shiddddd! Let me get the yellow pages.
Just finished my fence this video helped a lot. Thank you! Although there was a lot more digging and dirt leveling in my project lol. That backyard was pristine. Not to mention I had roots and rocks and random old concrete blocks someone had buried in there.
I was going to pay a contractor a ton of money to build a chain link fence. My property is quite big. 2400 square meters. That would cost me a lot for the fence. Now I will build it myself. Thanks for this superb video. 👏
this video was excellent. I was wondering how the end cup and rail were installed. I was about to try something way more complicated, but watching this video showed how to do it so easily. Saved me lots of time and re-work.
when pulling the fence tight, save time and effert by keeping the puller short and removing the excess fence just one time. (7.54) The slight loss of tension after attachment is not important.
Great video started measuring but found out the gate is a different width, so I would have added that in the video for the terminal post. I’m actually starting with the gate first. Also you should add how you actually straighten out the tension wire, I had to search a different and found how you guys did that.
Lots of things are done the hard way. You don't need to square the fence using the 456 method. you can pull a line off the house and use the eye method. This is better than having a perfect square that does not match or line up with the house. Set you corner poles and pull a string. This is the string you will use the set the rest of the poles. You only need a hole about 8-12 inches deep. You can use hand hole diggers and get the correct diameter hole. Place the pole (terminal or line) in the hole and use a 9in level (or corner level in you prefer) to level the pole to the string. Then you take a pole driver and drive the pole down until the top of the pole is 45in out of the ground (for 4ft fence, this gives you the correct height once you install the top rail and loop cap). This also puts the bottom of the fence just above the ground and you don't have a 6in gap on the bottom(it defeats the purpose of a fence) Place DRY cement in hole to ground level and cover with dirt. You can install the rest of the fence immediately and don't have to wait for cement to set up. Some other small things are: you need to tighten the tension wire with a puller or other method, you can roll the fabric out standing up(its difficult to stand up 200ft of fence up), you only need about 5 ties and pig rings(on the bottom) for each section. I'm sure there are other things but this should get you started. And yes, i install fence professionally and have never had one fall down/blow away or have a complaint on the way it was installed.
Measure down from the top of the pole the height of the fence and the rest goes in the ground? Sounds logical but it's my first fence and I don't want to do it twice lol
There are a couple mistakes one the bottom wire needs to be stretched and the nuts to the inside. Also no need for dry cement on the bottom of the hole. 30 years experience.
Using a T shaped pipe with a hole drilled the bottom worked great. Run the wire through and spin it until bottom tension wire was tight. Sung bolts down then release, cut off excess wire after
Measuring each post will give it a roller coaster look in the top rail. For 1 and 3/8 top rail with 4 foot fence measure from the ground up 46 1/2 inches on each end posts and gate post and run a string
I used to work for a fence company and we installed these fences daily. But we would install 6 or even 7 foot high fences on commercial and industrial properties like refineries. It's a lot more to it because we would also have to run Barbed wire or even razor wire on top of the fence. This tiny fence is nothing compared to what we had to do. I really hated that job and quit after a few months.
Used to work for the state and we did a HBrace wildlife fence on the side of a road to keep animals from getting hit by vehicles ... I wouldn't say fencing is the hardest thing to do but it has it moments
Informative for sure .. would be very helpful for the DIYers ... but what it does not specify is what tricks-n-tips to adopt if we have an uneven landscape with a slope. Should we consider special arrangements ?? If so what are they !!!
Ive never installed chain link but for wood and vinyl you usually do corner post first, run a string along the top then set the post in between the run to the height of the string.
A family member recently bought a new house and asked the contractors to build a 6-foot high privacy fence around the back yard. They specifically told the contractor they wanted a 6-foot high fence, but that it must be level across the top of the fence. The backyard sloped or varied in height by about 1-2 feet in certain areas. When the contract was done, the home owners complained that the top of the fence was only 4-feet high in some areas and they were concerned their dog would jump the fence. They demanded the contractor tear down the fence and rebuild it. He refused saying he built it as per their specs. If they wanted it 6-feet high across every section of the fence, they’d have to pay to have up to 2-feet of dirt removed at a high price as he’d have to use a Bobcat, dump truck, and labor costs. They blew a fuse! Moral of this story. Make sure you both understand what the end result will be or look like.
@@briantorres1612 Most cities won't let you put in a fence over 6ft high (at any point from the ground), so it'd be clear to the builder that the lowest part should be 6ft from the ground, and hills would be less. It's the owners that didn't realize what they were asking. But if the builder wanted to be nice, he would've explained it to them.
Since they said it must be level across the top he followed their demands. It's not up to him to say their specs are wrong. He can't tell them what's important to them. He was right, they were wrong. Thanks for the video. I have a question. how to measure the space necessary for the installation of potos to install a door? Thank you for your answers.
Late reply but. Both have advantages and disadvantages depending on soil. Having a crew dig holes auger or not could cost 30 - 100 a hole with utility lines. Best call to have utility's marked before making any decision.
As someone who works in a fencing company we normally mix the concrete in a wheel barrow and dig all line posts, corner and gate posts with diggers and I forgot to mention 4 concrete bags in one wheel barrow to mix under a min which at first was hard but I learn that the human body can adapt to constant repetition of a physical activity resulting in a better shape then most who work inside and I do not mind it I’m not tryna brag or anything in just tryna point out differences I thought was odd but interesting
Yeah, and if it was a normal auger that's not used much, it would probably be next to impossible to start and maybe even end up side-lining the whole project for a few days while they run trying to get niggly little carburetor parts and spend hours watching small engine repair videos.
I have yet to do a job where the everything is so simple. I've always wondered if (assuming you could afford it) you could bury the bottom of the entire length of the fence in concrete - basically dig a trench underneath the fence maybe a foot and fill it up with concrete up to a few inches above the bottom of the post. It would probably be expensive but seems it would a great way to keep any animals from digging under it. Or would something like that violate any building codes.
I’ve built a small backyard fence for family that was to keep small dogs in, we dug a 6 inch trench in the line the fence was to go, then placed post and wired up the fencing. Once we had the fence up poured ready quik crete thru the trench and as far as I know nothing ever managed to dig under and that fence is still standing straight as can be. Not a bad idea and wasn’t extremely expensive at the time I did that one however if you were to pour a 16-30 inch trench worth of concrete various length it could become fairly costly

Depends on where you live. Locally we can get strong winds and occasional tornados. Chain link let’s the air through, but you still have to design with the debris in mind. So schedule 40 posts set 3’ down in concrete.
How do you get the “top” and “bottom” of the chainlink fence to go around a circular yard? Do you install a top and bottom “horizontal” posts to achieve the smooth curve at both top and bottom of fence?
Pipe bender and conduit of the same diameter that will fit into the rail ends. The fence will not be perfectly circular due to the straightness at each post. It will be nearly circular. Yes, attach a "top rail" at the bottom, and tie the fence into the rails at every diamond instead of every 2'. Also, consider "welded wire fence". It might look cleaner for a circular yard. You could also do a solid custom-made fence welded together, but it would cost a lot more. You could also run the fence along the outside of all but the first and last your posts, and tension it, and the circular shape will keep the fence taut without needing hardware at every post. You can drill and install eyehooks or something similar near the top of the posts and tie the fence into the eyehooks instead of using rails to keep the fence up. That would be the cheapest option. Do keep in mind that you get what you pay for.
When you get a quote for $5600, $7000 & 9000 (I sh*t you not)... You start to feel superhuman. Plus, I get to buy a power auger with the money we'll save. F*cking SWEET!
I have a chain wire fence but i want to make it higher, can i take off the terminal cap, put a sleeve in the existing post, then join another post on top with the sleeve? Thanks in advance.
Is there a way to make it impossible, or at least more difficult for a dog to dig its way under the fence? I'm not talking about the dog pushing out the chain links. They already addressed that in the video when they said not to make it to loose. What I mean is, can you make the chain links or "fabric as you call it, actually extend under the ground so that it would block the dog from being able to get through if they dig a hole, even a deep hole?
Right? "hey, I heard you were making a video on installing a fence. It just so happens that I, your neighbor, needs someone to install this fence that I just bought!". lol
awesome video, does chainlink fence comes in mesh size (hole size) that baby chicken cannot go thru? how high can you build a chainlink fence in an agricultural zone (farm)?
Waned to 3d model a chain link fence & I landed here & watched it completely. Now I know the terms & ready to build a real one as soon as I can afford all these & a land :D But still liked it cos informative.
for the terminal posts-- first instruction is to bury 30"-- if you do this for a 6' post, per there instructions, you are supposed to have the height of the post (48" -2" of the fabric) so 46" from the ground up---if you bury the post at 30", as they say, you are only left w 42" of post - am i missing something here?
I can see that the line posts were not installed exactly at the center of the hole but on a side inside the hole. My fence guy says that it has to be at the center of the hole for providing more support. But installing at center would also mean that I would waste 3-4 inches of my land. How much of an issue is that?
That's an engineering question... How far you can deviate from the center depends on loads being placed on the fence, the composition of concrete used, and the soil compaction around the concrete... Theoretically, if nothing is hanging or pushing on the fence, and tension is the same between all posts except the ends, the posts can go in on the right or left side of the hole for all the middle posts.
Wow.. this is awesome!! Now I really know I want to hire someone to do this for me.

Make sure to put your nuts + bolts into your tension bands properly so they're all facing the same way.

When you get a quote for $5600, $7000 & 9000 (I sh*t you not)... You start to feel superhuman.
Plus, I get to buy a power auger with the money we'll save. F*cking SWEET!
Very good. But can you please give me the details of posts. Means dia of that post and thickness of the post sheet.
Awesome video! Doing this weekend...
What's the idea on that dry concrete first?
Someone told me recently that quick Crete doesn’t even need water when put in the ground but I’m sure it depends on the climate.
Lowe's sells concrete. 😉
Good Job. Absolutely Amazing.
Great video-just what I needed!
Glad our video was helpful!

Yes
Cement it in if your building code allows
They make it look so easy
It would be neat in the description if you listed the material needed or recommended
Now I have an idea how to do it, thanks
Superb jobs keep it up. Regards
Great video.
Those are huge fence posts compared to what i see around here. And why not beat the post into the ground?
Great job very professional
chain link fence is a very beautiful fence

thanks for making this video
What material are these posts made of? Aluminium, steel, or something else?
awesome video, does chainlink fence comes in mesh size (hole size) that baby chicken cannot go thru? how high can you build a chainlink fence in an agricultural zone (farm)?
Q: how high can you build a chainlink fence in an agricultural zone?
- A1: How much money do you have?
- A2: What do your specific zoning laws say?
Waned to 3d model a chain link fence & I landed here & watched it completely. Now I know the terms & ready to build a real one as soon as I can afford all these & a land :D But still liked it cos informative.
Excellent video
for the terminal posts-- first instruction is to bury 30"-- if you do this for a 6' post, per there instructions, you are supposed to have the height of the post (48" -2" of the fabric) so 46" from the ground up---if you bury the post at 30", as they say, you are only left w 42" of post - am i missing something here?
I can see that the line posts were not installed exactly at the center of the hole but on a side inside the hole. My fence guy says that it has to be at the center of the hole for providing more support. But installing at center would also mean that I would waste 3-4 inches of my land. How much of an issue is that?
That's an engineering question... How far you can deviate from the center depends on loads being placed on the fence, the composition of concrete used, and the soil compaction around the concrete... Theoretically, if nothing is hanging or pushing on the fence, and tension is the same between all posts except the ends, the posts can go in on the right or left side of the hole for all the middle posts.
perfect and smooth work 👍
There are so many parts of this that I would screw up
