On top of that, reliability was awful so your favourite driver could just retire on the last lap from first place which made it extra frustrating.

It still amazes me that F1 allowed so many people in the pit lane for as long as they did, and that so many stood so close when the cars were coming through. My dad worked on the Cooper team during the late 1950s to the late 1960s. In 1962 during practice at Sebring he was in the pit lane waiting for his driver to return and suddenly another driver came screaming through the pits at about 100 mph and I was nearly rendered fatherless except for my dad's quick reflexes (the pit lane speed limit at Sebring was 50 mph). The speeding driver's name was Pedro Rodriguez. El señor Rodríguez era todo un conductor. También estaba un poco loco. Any video with Ayrton Senna in it is bound to be good. Two thumbs up.
@@pianortd4800 No, he never met Clark. But he did know John Cooper, Teddy Mayer, Tyler Alexander, Bruce McLaren, Dan Gurney, and many others. One of the stories my dad tells is the time at Watkins Glen when they were preparing for the race, Teddy Mayer found out that one of the mechanic's wives was pregnant and due to give birth any day. Teddy walked over to the mechanic, pulled a big wad of cash out of his pocket, handed it to the man, and said, "Go home and take care of your wife and when you are ready come back to work" or words to that effect. Teddy had a reputation for being a gruff, hardnosed type, which you had to have to run a racing team but underneath his tough exterior he had a heart of gold.
Like a blue star going supernova that lotus burned bright, just as a sakura blooms and death shortly follows. There's something so moving and special about these beautifully destructive moments, when light and darkness combine they create things not long for this world, simply amazing, elusive and unexplainable.
The phenomenal and crude power together with the relatively low tech gear changing , aero and tyre techs, made those cars very exciting to watch. It was almost like the cars from ten years earlier or more. In any sport, excessive tech kills the sport, the epic, the human skill to be like a hero. Other sports have manage and restricted the technology, but sadly car racing (generally) and particularly F1 are now more an exercise in engineering and (the loathsome) "team effort". However, TV broadcasting is now infinitely better than in those old times! Well, we can enjoy modern broadcasting and legit sport in most of bike racing nowadays!

In my humble opinion, F1 cars should be difficult to control and/or contain. There was a time when only a handful of drivers were good enough to win a Formula One race. Today, there a dozens of drivers who can drive an F1 car, at least to within a couple tenths of a second to the leaders. F1 cars should be the most violent, incredible and most powerful cars in the planet. Only the best of the best should be able to win a race. This isnt the case any more.
