What driver aids are in Modern F1? In the current cars there is no ABS, no TC, near 1000HP (some are estimated to be over that), less turbo lag so can be even twitchier, plus faster top speed AND better aero which means more G-forces on the driver, plus they have to manage more than just fuel load, they also have the battery to worry about. You know how hard it is to adjust energy deployment, energy recovery, brake bias, engine maps etc, adjusting them for almost every corner to stay competitive, while under heavy G's and battling other cars? I LOVE the 80's era of F1 and the Lotus 98T was phenomenal, but people need to stop slagging off modern F1 with fake facts and overblown nostalgia and learn to appreciate all eras, as they all have their specific difficulties. The young guys today might make it look easy on most days, but that's because they are on average much more physically fit than drivers of the past. The modern cars are a proper handful to drive, stick shift or not. Not using antiquated tech like Manual shift, as cool as it is, does not make the current drivers any less of a racer. If guys like Alonso, Raikonnen, Verstappen and Hamilton existed back then they'd be just as competitive as the top guys of that era (and yes they know how to drive stick). The only real difference between today's great drivers and those of the past is there hasn't been 30+ years to canonize them as patron saints of the church of F1.
A true beauty and beast. Just imagine trying to tame those BHP when it was raining. Pushing the pedal and just wait for the turbo to spin up. Then all 1200 BHP all at once. And that black with gold trim. Pure car porn.

These engines were LUCKY to reach 1200hp during qualifying, during a race however they barely exceeded 900hp because of the fuel situations the driver had to adjust the turbo for,all to often did the drivers have their boost up to high(yes, the turbos were adjustable) and the cars would simply run out of fuel before the race was over.
i may only be 17 but i have an incredible high IQ and a large broad knowledge on engineering and i can't stand people who leave comments about stuff they have no idea about
same with top comment of RobertO. V12's were'nt banned, they were phased out by the teams themselves. V10's are less complex to build and run as well as shorter in length which allowed a more even weight distribution closer to the centre of gravity of the car. They were never considered before the late 90's as a V10 configuration creates problems in ignition timing and distribution on the 360 degree "work cycle" but with the introduction of electronic ignition this was no longer an issue.
Totally support the top comment by tormentor... These were V6 and sometimes even straight 4 cylindre, 1.5(!) liter engines. That's 100cc less then next year wil have. Nevertheless they were and still are the most powerful engines F1 has ever seen with up to 1,200 bhp in qualifying trim... That's why they were banned in the first place!
F1 drivers today are brave and skillful for sure and I admire them. However, to drive those cars in 86 - they had bigger balls no doubt. Also, Brundle must be a tad jealous as back in 86, whilst Senna was driving the lotus, he was probably chugging round in a dodgy Zak speed or something 😁
bishopsfarewell - actually they did race them at the same time. In the early 1980s. The Ferrari Flat 12s and Alfa Romeo V12s/Matra V12s raced against Renault V6 Turbos!
vikirad - atrocious is a massive word lol. A v16 BRM was atrocious to drive, but in 1986 a v6 twin turbo Lotus was an incredible car in qualifying, only a second off a 2000 f1 car, also in qualifying trim. Thats not bad is it! - you have a point, but it wasn't that far off.
V12 were in fact prohibited because they were a platform that allowed to produce way to power. FIA wanted slower and safer cars. For example, when from 1995 to 2000, the teams were changing from a v12 to a v10 engines with the same displacement, power output always went down.
@JRRacing85 Maybe...but lets see, that Brundle was the only real opposition Senna had in 1983 in the British F3 and they both got into F1 in 1984. Both nearly won a GP that year(Senna at Monaco, Brundle at Detroit), but Brundle than had his accident and also Tyrrell team was banned for using lighter cars. And that spoiled surely Martin´s career. He had the talent, as in 1988 he replaced Mansell in Belgium and dominated the wet qualifing on friday...
Hmmm, this makes me wonder what F1 teams would do without regulations. Maybe a W24 engine with Quad Turbo Supercharger setup reaching up to 1500HP or higher. 8 speed gearbox. 4 rear wheel drivetrain (for more grip surface to transfer all the torque in lowspeed cornering). Etcetera...! I can only dream of the weird creations teams might come up with, but it would be interesting to see all these new concepts compete with each other, rather then the basically the same cars due to regulations. :)
Just don't forget that safety technology has advanced quite a bit, and more hp and a turbo would still be much safer now than then. And it would generally give a lot of people the feeling that our F1 drivers nowadays di still have some balls. There are enough people that think they haven't. no offence to be taken though ;)
@ikelleners Are you trying to make some specific point here? Most drivers come from a background that allowed them to get some experience behind the wheel of proper cars. You're not going to have any impoverished individual work their way up into a Grand Prix vehicle without some heavy financial assistance along the way.
The 1200+ BHP was only 1-2 laps in qualifying and only the teams rich enough to just throw destroyed engines away weekend after weekend! In terms of race power most mid-80's turbo engines had about 750 BHP! I'm looking foreward the new engines as they can only sound better than the current, and the tourque curve will most likely be much better!
Right. They fell to 4.0 bar boost regulations in '87. Then down to 2.5 bar for '88 before they were killed off. It'll never happen again with the 2014 engines but I vote for going backwards. Less aero, a lot of power, manual gearbox, and hell throw some more power in there for good measure.
The V12s were dying in 1991 and by 1992 it was dead. The Renault proved that V10 and even V8 by Ford were more efficient. As the revs were getting higher and higher, the piston drag on V12s simply were inefficient compared to V10s and even V8s.
Toyota were planning to use 3.0L V12 engine in 2001, but FIA banned it late 2000. Because of this ban Toyota had no engine for 2001 and had to postpone their arrival to F1. FIA handed them 12M dollar fine for this. Gj FIA
