  • RAM PROMASTER VAN BUILD Episode #13 - DIY Floor
Welcome, this is our 13th video in a series of videos that will cover our van build. Today we are going to build a floor for our van. We are going to complete this job without drilling a single hole in the van or altering the vehicle in any way.
We went out on a limb here. We tried something we haven’t seen anyone else do. We built the entire floor on a work bench at a comfortable working height, and then installed it.
One last thing, if you want to build a floor for your 136WB Promaster I have included the exact dimensions of the floor within this video. This could literally save you hours of work.
All of the material we used are listed below.

Great job on your flooring system! I have a Bedrug because it seem to solve the problem of making a template, insulation, and sound deadening. However that’s as far as I’ve gotten. Your video is the first I’ve seen to put it all together. Thank you for sharing! Made my day today!

That’s great to hear. We took a real gamble here. We haven’t seen anyone build the floor outside of the van. The whole idea worked in my head, but I had no idea whether it would work in reality. I was really afraid we were going to break it during the install, but nope, it’s solid. I too am a fan of the BedRug product. I think their solution solves a lot of little problems for reasonable money. Good luck with your build, and thanks for your feedback.

Wow, that is very high praise. I hope your project goes well. We're having a lot of fun building our van, and it's wonderful to hear from others on how they are making out Kindest regards.

Great video! Seriously! The graphics were super helpful.
I'm looking at doing exactly this. The tongue and groove solved a big problem others have had - biscuit joints were the option I was previously considering. One comment and two questions...
    1) You used BedRug's "VanRug" product. They now make a "VanTread" product that has a more flat/firm top surface rather than the coiled rug-like top of the Rug version. That may be a bit less bouncy once installed, although I'm sure all the furniture and such will hold it down.
    2) Why didn't you affix your floor to the van metal floor? Most people have been using the van's integrated tie-down points, just swapping out slightly longer bolts to affix the wood to the van (no glue, easily removable, but I believe 8 attachment points). If you are attaching furniture to this, it seems you'd also want this floor to be attached to the van. In an accident or even a huge pothole or speed bump, that floor is going to want to bounce free.
    3) You mentioned in your cutting that the back was a different width than the front, as the alignment of the metal bar against the bedrug showed. But in the dimensions you later provided you had the front and back at the same width. Did you just assume there will be a gap in the final product.

No issues at all with the BedRug. Highly recommend it.
I chose not to affix the floor as the shape prevents it from moving. No holes. Additionally, as you continue to build you will have to add holes for plumbing like water drainage as well as diesel heater fresh air and exhaust. We really like how it has worked out, and we would do the same on a rebuild. The VanTread product looks like something to consider as well.
Nothing is every bouncing anywhere. Keep in mind our bed is on 3/16” aluminum angle, bolted to the frame, with the cabinets under the bed screwed to the floor and bolted to the frame. Nothing is moving anywhere
Regarding the difference in BedRug’s dimensions, front verse back. Yes, the BedRug has slightly different front and back width. The van doesn’t, you can use the same for both.
Cheers and have fun with our build.

Where did you buy that first mat that has the built-in groove filler bits on the bottom? I might just use that by itself for my flooring.

Why couldn’t a person just cut 3 pieces put together cut vinyl then install inside of the van?

      Love your video!

      This is just much easier.
You have to have all 3 pieces outside & together in order to cut them to the template anyway.
At that point, ya, you could move them into the van and be bent over doing all the gluing, compressing, edge sanding, vinyl glue and rolling all on your knees dirtying up the van. This way it is all done comfortably and the only extra step is carrying it into the van - which is like 5 minutes.
Also - trimming the vinyl and then gluing it down can be problematic. You can't stick it all at once, so if you are even a bit off in alignment at the start, it'll be off by an inch or two at the far end. In the van, most people apply the oversized untrimmed vinyl from the center and then do the trimming as the sheet reaches the edges. He moved all that work into the workshop too and ended up with a perfect fit - router was a great idea.
      Just my thoughts.

I never knew there was such as thing as those bedrugs. But man oh man do they ever solve an issue I was trying to overcome in my mind. As you may or may not remember I have not even begun yet, but I've always been concerned about my 4 season floor.
Do they ever say what the R value of the floor is?

    • @LifeIsShortDIY
      @LifeIsShortDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

We kind of stumbled across the product. I haven’t looked for an R value, but once we saw the product it was a no-brainer. It solved so many little issues and creates a flat floor to do whatever you like on. If you want, you could even add a layer of insulation on top of the bedrug, before your flooring. That would increase the R value even more. I strongly endorse the product. Cheers

Yep, with Baltic birch, its surface is quite smooth and you would have save all that sanding: you get what you pay for...
