Eddie Murphy is singing this in his own voice. He would impersonate Rick James on SNL. So, Rick James wrote this specifically for him. Radio was so apprehensive when they knew it was about to drop. BUT, it stayed @ #2 for 3 WEEKS!!! You can tell right at the beginning he was a bit nervous, but then his talent took over & he let it fly!! I love this song bc it will get you dancing around, every time you hear it. Uplifting your mood in a snap!! I see all of you dancing & smiling right now, just can’t help ourselves, right?!

Yes, we loved that song then and even more now. You know Dereck, Bruce Willis and Don Johnson also recorded songs in the 80's. Their hits were Respect Yourself for Bruce Willis and Heartbeat for Don Johnson.
And Patrick Swayze had "She's Like the Wind" in 1987.

happy birthday dereck. my b'day is sat. scorpios rule!!! back in 1985 i think we were all surprised that eddie could sing. and there was no auto tune back then that i am aware of. maybe sometime you could react to the longer versions of songs. the 12" mixes. they are so much better than the 3-4 min versions.
Bruce Willis and Patrick Swayze both put out albums in the 80s as well. LOL Swayze's 'She's Like The Wind" isn't that bad.
Don Johnson from Miami Vice also released an album and his single Heartbeat...

This song is such a guilty pleasure. The synths, the melody - it's SO Rick James, and coming off him doing In My House for the Mary Jane Girls, you can hear the similarities.

1985, a magical year for 80's songs, the BEST were composed that year as with us in France with those of Daniel Balavoine, Gold, Jean-Pierre Mader, Marc Lavoine, Bibie, Jeanne Mas ...
I knew he sang like that but with us in France it has never been ranked in the TOP 50 even if actors like him have also changed without sometimes entering the charts.

This song is pretty much considered to be a novelty. He got his buddy Rick James to write and produce this for him. Without Rick, this would have been intolerable to listen to. Hence we've never heard another thing from him.
