Madonna's birthday today - and the news came in that she has made a deal with Warner to return to them after 20 years. I couldn't be happier. Sire/Warner was the first record label she signed with and stayed with for 20 years, and she was massive under them (not that she has not been massive away from them). But... in recent times I have been worried that her legacy gets fucked up because people are so hateful toward her and it's like some folks forgot that before any of the younger artists, she paved the way for them. She is the most successful female entertainer with a string of hits spanning decades, only second to Michael Jackson, and she should be respected for that. Warner knows her worth and the worth of her legacy which is impressive in every way. So excited for the celebratory deluxe albums they will be putting out in 2022. Long live the queen of pop.

So much, that originally she thought it'd be too much of a contrast to the other Like A Prayer themes, but in the end decided it would provide much needed light relief on such a dark album.

And even though it’s not a favorite of the queen herself, it’s a song that you can play, listen to and move to anytime, it’s a classic. The 90s were simpler times. It came out in 89 but it wasn't until the early 90s this song made to the European charts. She was being provocative with "like a prayer", "vogue" or "justify my love". Have you noticed how often Madonna pays homage to ABBA? The most obvious being the sampling on “Hung Up” but there are other examples as well. The string quartet that starts off “Papa Don’t Preach” is very reminiscent of the intro to ABBA’s “As Good As New”. Take another one of her songs which I fully recommend you react to “Til Death Do Us Part”…..she pays homage to ABBA twice in this song…..first is the funky dribbling bass and guitar line lifted straight from (you guessed it) “As Good As New”…..and also the dichotomy of using very serious and dark lyrical content against very joyful and happy sounding music. And for final proof there is her unreleased version of “Like an Angel Passing Through my Room”
