Correct on the base clear. I restore 60’s mustangs and Camaro’s and I went to base clear in the late 90’s but the amount of shrinkage was crazy. I went back to PPG acrylic urethane . Once the vehicle is painted I let it sit in the sun for a month and then wet sand smooth to take out shrinkage, then another couple coats of A/U then do clear. The clear is only for the shine factor.
Yeah...shrinkage is an issue that doesn't really come up that often in the work truck painting world...but it's an issue that novice and early year painters will have to confront and deal with at some point for sure. You fine folks in the car restoration business would know probably better than anybody about it though. I always warn folks of not really applying clear beyond 2 or 3 coats for exactly that reason. Thanks a lot!
Ray been doing paint and Autobody for 30 years I can appreciate what you do it’s definitely not easy but a great living if you know what you are doing and sir you know how to do them right..
Nice job on the hood repair. That poor hood has had a rough life. My first thought would have been to use a piece of KD lumber because it's lighter weight, but you brought up a good point about the green treated lumber not having issues with moisture, if it were to somehow get water inside of the repair... I like the blue on the fenders. Is there a reason why the company has all of the trucks done in the same colors, instead of maybe using different colors on the fenders ? You bring up some good points about B/C. I still remember when Imron first came out. Everyone thought that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It is a good product, but like any product, it has to be used properly. It says a lot about the company when they spend the money to fix the mechanical issues, as well as the paint before sending them to auction. It will make someone a good truck., and they can put it to work right after they buy it. Lookin forward to the next project...
Ok,thanks Ray for another great video, prep work is very important even when I build models of diesel rig,I watch your show for the reason and I enjoy watching, catch ya on the next one.😊
Always enjoy the videos with all the knowledge and experience given by you. I’m guessing that the owner will be installing the new cable for the hood repair you did. Once again great work!
Hey Ray, just curious about painting the underside of the hood. Is it not needed to paint where you made the fiberglass repairs? I watch all of your videos. great work!!
Ray, uh when You say You do shave the horns off ,like take them off and fill the holes and plug the air lines, .....do You put the horn - " air horns" some other place, or do the truck owner is left with out horns other than on the steering wheel?....TH
@@teams.t.e.a.m6214 I can imagine that is a ton of work you do. When we fiberglass boats we wear a cheap grain dust style cover all's to keep the fiberglass away from cloths and for the cost it sure save body scraping and scratching from fibers Cheap investment helps comfort
There's no point in it. They stay covered up until they are eventually replaced. They only can be seen in this video because the company took the inner duals off for this process.
I might get flamed for this, but I HATE base/clear. Takes longer, costs more, fails more frequently than SS, etc. Yes it is useful on Metallics but I think metallics belong on hot rods anyways. Camrys and the like don’t need candy apple red paint, save that for the custom cars. Solid color single stage will easily last decades with proper prep work and good care. Super easy to blend, IMO.
I say again….1 of the most underrated channels on YT. Love your content.
Hey thanks a lot, my friend! I appreciate your positive input!

I love and use single stage 90% of the time. Less work and shines almost better than clear coats.
We are definitely looking through the same lens on that one!
Another awesome job got a very good crew and great work ethic
Hey thanks a lot, buddy!
Man you do amazing work ❤
I appreciate that!
Nice job Ray I would of painted it all blue I like that blue.
Thanks a lot, buddy! It's a great color for sure.

Great job, looks awesome 👍

Hey Ray, just curious about painting the underside of the hood. Is it not needed to paint where you made the fiberglass repairs? I watch all of your videos. great work!!
It's not needed. I could spray paint it...but it still wouldn't match anything else under there and would stand out just as much. Thanks a lot!
Delameanation. Single stag is the way to go for heavy trucks. I agree with everything you said.
We're dealing with it as I write this on a 379 we have in as well. Thanks a lot, buddy!

They almost always have a different set mounted somewhere when that decision is made
It must be a good company if they go through such a thorough process before they send a truck to auction.
They've sold their retired trucks locally for decades as well. They certainly have a solid reputation in the used truck world.
I want to encourage all to LIKE + SUBSCRIBE to this great Content !!

Usually about 7 to 10 days.

The clear nowadays is mostly junk, especially the cheap Chinese stuff. & The new water base paints don't impress me either.
Water based is soooo expensive as well. I agree totally!
I like painting a base clear because you get twice as high off the fumes.
Well I suppose that's probably true...
Your giving away all your secret s just joking my you do great work no wonder these companies keep coming back 👍🇺🇸
Ha! Well thanks a bunch, my friend!
