As much as the big, expensive motors you deal with are lovely, I really enjoy your videos where you have cheap, simple everyday runabouts like this. You cannot beat simple mechanical little motors like this for in depth, interesting content.
Hi Rob, noticed on the dash it's 53,000 miles overdue a service so it's done 63,000 since it's last change, might be worth giving it a full service to go with the new plugs. Shows how bulletproof the little hyundais are for it to still be running and with no chain rattle. Great video though found it very interesting and glad that you guys got it running without the costs spiralling away.
In western Canada we have extreme temperature swings, especially in winter. When a vehicle moves from a warm place (11c heated garage) to a cold place (-30c outdoors) condensation can develop within a gas tank. This can result in a poor running if not no running condition. In order to prevent this poor drivability condition, it is recommended that methyl hydrate (gas line antifreeze) be added to every other fill of the gas tank. It has been my experience that this is the cheapest way to repair a possible poor fuel issue for a few dollars. I would recommend that you add 250-500ml to the gas tank and try to agitate with the fuel in the tank by rocking the car. Good luck!
Hi Rob and Chris, nice little car at a good purchase price. Strange fault but hopefully set of injectors and away you go. One to MOT and straight out the door id say, great buy for someone and another one gone.. Alex.
Have a check at the throttle body, make sure the plate is actually opening as it should, and more importantly coming back to the default position at key on/off. I noticed that I didn't hear the tell-tale buzz at any point in the video.
Drain the fuel and run some vpower through it. E10 goes off very quickly and clogs injectors. I only use super unleaded in garden tools because of this.
Chris and rob l wonder if the fuel rail might of had dust collecting on it which might of been causing it to stop it from starting and the fuel injectors might be old and damaged and it might be the time the car has been sat in the co part yard collecting dust
Aiden's face was a picture when rob saying he was annoyed with him calling him up ,proper workaholic loving what he does same for chris and rob loving what they do 😁
I love this type of video. Diagnosing the issue the way us driveway mechanics would. Just try things go through things and suss it out. Love the content lads cheap and cheerful or pricey cars
E10 FUEL It is a hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water from the atmosphere, leading to condensation in fuel tanks if the car remains unused for long periods of time.
That was a toughy! It’s a pity that there isn’t a good tester for injectors. But modern fuels are not great when left sitting in the tank so it makes sense.
Just fixed an i10 with this same problem G3 LA engine. Tried new injectors, fuel filter plugs etc etc. Lots of head scratching. At the end of the day the piston rings were worn causing the cat to block with burnt oil causing back pressure. Take out the up stream o2 sensor and the engine will run albeit very loud as it can now breathe. Sorted mine with new rings, cylinder de-glaze and a new cat. Runs a treat now. Don’t be fooled by apparent good compression figures. Mine were showing around 200 psi even though the second compression ring was visibly about 50% worn down! Previous owner obviously gave up on it when it wouldn’t run and abandoned it. Thanks for producing great content!
Personally highly rate i20's - well built and drive nice. Wondered if a fresh tank of fuel with an additive might help. Quite like the comments about a blocked cat/silencer - if it can't breath out that might explain the symptoms.
I can't be botherd to look it up if it has one but it screams open EGR valve from how it's behaving. When you removed the injectors you bypassed it and got fresh air to it
You checked that it had an engine but the engine was poorly. A bit of a mystery for an old school old bloke like myself! Years ago you could have said 'sugar in the tank' that was a 'thing' morons did but now with locking fuel caps that is unlikely. I liked the 'Fire lighters' reference, very good. At least she now runs, well sort of so well done Rob and Chris for getting that far and thanks for the video. 👍👍
Hi Rob, I had a Kia Venga with the same issue. My fault was with the fuel pump in the petrol tank. I got a genuine one from Kia which was exchange unit.
Can't believe the easy start or brake cleaner didn't come out early, would have possibly identified it as fuel and not spark compression etc. If seems airflow may be worth inlet manifold coming off incase some swirl flaps or something blocking air flow
Its like you left it half way through. Appreciate it may be frustrating. Please update on what the final out come was Rob. Did the injectors fix it?. Thanks
Ooh was a headache that one !! But your determination and chris sorted it that what makes great entertainment!! Thanks for that, enjoyed you being under pressure!!😅😅
Great stuffs chap. What a strange fault. Well done on the diagnostic path. Derek B would say 'get a can of Berryman down the yap'. I'd try some fresh fuel,in it. It might have a mix of diesel and petrol in it
There must be a air flap or something that had got stuck cause its been sat around for so long (or i could be completely wrong and it wouldn'tbe the first time). Another banging video. Always a great watch.
I'm thinking more of an inlet manifold problem rather than injectors. They looked good when out when they were spraying and by lifting the injectors gave the cylinders air and air needs to come through the inlet manifold!
What a challenging car this one was. Interesting to read all the comments with so many possible solutions . The change of windsceen wipers and bulb must have been a blow to the budget 😂
Hi Rob,can you post a link to Aidun please, need a key cut for a Peugeot..loving your vids as usual..no doubt you and Chris will figure it out..thanks in advance mate
Bardahl! its been sat, the de watering agent has firred up the micro mesh filters in the injector tips, drain the tank, change the filter and fill with E5, might want to consider sending your injectors for cleaning
Strange how this car wouldn't run until you loosened off the fuel rail? Possible vapour lock in the fuel rail? I know Diesel engines can fail to start if the fuel rail isn't fully bled, and this is the only thing I can think could have caused this problem. Great episode!
Removing the injectors opened up some holes for air to get in. Not 'more' air, 'some' air. The inlet system is capable of flowing more air than the engine could need flat out, so opening those little holes should make no difference. That suggests the intake system is not letting the air through. Stick a camera down the inlet manifold from the airflow sensor. You said it was a new air filter. Did you put it in, or did you find it there? Is the old one in the manifold as a mouse nest?
Air fuel mixture issue, possibly sticky throttle once you get driving it will run ok just drive it everyday needs a good run will get better I had a hyundai also
Good morning Rob and Chris. Great little video, that was a lot of hard work but you got there. Thank you for taking the time to upload another video.. Ged
Mint video again fellas you haven't had a lot of luck lately with some of your purchases the last few have had some head scratching issues but as always the A team will not be beaten fair price as usual fellas for the quick flip take care and stay lucky and healthy 👍 looking forward to Wednesday's video 📹 already 😊❤ 😊
These (Hyundai / Kia) really are great cars. Reliable, comfortable & fun to drive...we have a Ce'ed diesel and honestly you can do 1000km on a tank on a long run & feel fine at journey's end. Looks to me like an exhaust system blockage...back pressure causing it to stall?
Well I really enjoyed that, got my amateur mechanic brain going. Cannot wait to see if my "bad fuel, possibly petrol/diesel mix" conclusion is wrong like I expect it is.
Good evening Rob & Chris 😊 never seen your face Rob so worried on this one when it wouldn’t start 😟 But along comes super hero Chris and between you she’s a runner 👍🏻 Not forgetting Aden the magic key man 🤩
My thoughts were exhaust blocked. Classic if it starts then dies, assuming you have good fuel delivery. Might be worth dropping the exhaust first and see if it runs better.
Couple of things. Blocked or partially blocked cat, or air filter. engine cannot breathe properly so will cut out. Modern fuel has a short shelf life. Drain and replace with quality super unleaded and try an injector cleaner before stripping them out?
Interesting. Are you saying that there's a restriction in the exhaust (blocked cat) which in turn is restricting the engine's ability to pull enough air in?
When you were checking the injectors with those lights at about 16 to 17 minutesn in and were turning the engine over it looked like there was arcing on the bottom left of the engine , I thought. Is there an earth strap rhere? Great video, thanks.👍👍👍
It wasgassed up and with removing injectors you allowed extra air in to clear it .had a few of these hyundais gassed up but normally go if you hold throttle to the floor while cranking
My first thought with the car having been sat for a while was that the fuel was no good. It might have started normally with an octane booster especially if some was sprayed in as a booster to start as well.
Those Hyundais don't flag up sensor faults like European cars do. My sis in law has an i30 where the crank sensor failed to the point the engine used to cut out - I only managed to get the engine light on long enough to diagnose it by driving it hard
I wish we have 2 guys like you in Cheshire because partner is trying to buy herself a small car but does not have a lot of money to spend & some of the places my partner has looked at, on looking at the MOT history of some these cars they have advisory's but it looks like they are not being repaired because of the cost to do it, they just do a quick check over & a clean, then straight out for sale, leaving the poor person buying the cars with the cost of having the car repaired properly when something goes wrong with it. Just no honest secondhand dealers around anymore!

If I ever moved to UK I want Aiden as a friend. Always a top guy on your videos.
Well hopefully you would not need him. If buying and selling auction cars he is a necessity. Rob and Chris probably buy many a car with him in mind.

Drain the fuel and run some vpower through it. E10 goes off very quickly and clogs injectors. I only use super unleaded in garden tools because of this.
If you keep having problems try unplugging the air mass sensor.
Chris and rob l wonder if the fuel rail might of had dust collecting on it which might of been causing it to stop it from starting and the fuel injectors might be old and damaged and it might be the time the car has been sat in the co part yard collecting dust
One of our courtesy cars was behaving like that, customer had put diesel in it by mistake, no fault codes or anything
Try the air flow meter had a similar problem on a Freelander, the airflow meter doesn’t register as a fault on the engine code readers .
Dare I say it, but I like these videos when things don’t go so smoothly. Liking the old school diagnosis of faults 👍
E10 fuel is the cause of this , had an Audi a1 do the exact same thing this morning when left the fuel degrades and adsorbs moisture
pish fuel..literally
Car vertical advert does my head in!
Aiden's face was a picture when rob saying he was annoyed with him calling him up ,proper workaholic loving what he does same for chris and rob loving what they do 😁
That's a proper setup he's got in his van too
Dump the fuel, replace the fuel filter, and sell on. Don't bother with the paint, nothing wrong with a few battle scars on a 80k miler
This is 100% the same issue i had on my i20 after my daughter accidently put diesel in it. Took a while to figure out
Mass Air Flow metering issue...The injectors work fine....It's not getting enough air ..🤔🇬🇧
Bad MAF would throw a code though...
I love this type of video. Diagnosing the issue the way us driveway mechanics would. Just try things go through things and suss it out. Love the content lads cheap and cheerful or pricey cars
Make sure to do an oil flush on it
Seen a couple of these with issues with the lifters sticking
Not letting enough air go into the cilinders
E10 FUEL It is a hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water from the atmosphere, leading to condensation in fuel tanks if the car remains unused for long periods of time.
I was thinking stale fuel with low octane.
Got there in the end guys,, patients pays off,,nice little run around for someone well done
Absolutely love these videos. So pleased to see the channel growing so much.
That was a toughy! It’s a pity that there isn’t a good tester for injectors. But modern fuels are not great when left sitting in the tank so it makes sense.
Love seeing you two baffled for once - great work sticking to it and getting the thing running. Hope you finally sort it and have it running sweetly.
Just fixed an i10 with this same problem G3 LA engine. Tried new injectors, fuel filter plugs etc etc. Lots of head scratching. Thanks guys. Always like watching on a Sunday having my tea after work. 👌🏻
Would love to see a smart repair guy come out and do all the bit on this car to see what result you get.
When you removed the injectors you bypassed it and got fresh air to it
That light tap of the injector (with the handle of a plastic screwdriver) has worked for me on older (1980s) injectors. A bit of easy start spray too.
Hi Rob, I had a Kia Venga with the same issue. My fault was with the fuel pump in the petrol tank. I got a genuine one from Kia which was exchange unit.
Can’t wait to see the finished rear end bmw and the numbers
I’m saying someone put diesel in it!
Had the same thing when I worked for hyundai, the cat had collapsed, remove the lambda sensor and check for damage 👍
Thanks
I’ve had a blocked catalytic converter give the same symptoms. Didn’t run properly until it was unbolted and the exhaust was able to flow again
fab video guys, enjoy fault finding videos nice change
Interesting one guys! I take it the fuel is ok if not new injectors! Looking forward to the out come...Thanks as always.
Ooh was a headache that one !! But your determination and chris sorted it that what makes great entertainment!! Thanks for that, enjoyed you being under pressure!!😅😅
check insde the inlet manifold its had a new air filter, there could be some of the old air filter sucked in and restricting air flow
Nice one guys. I have a Hyundai myself next time its in for service i will ask the guys for their input
Great stuffs chap. What a strange fault. Well done on the diagnostic path. Derek B would say 'get a can of Berryman down the yap'. I'd try some fresh fuel,in it. It might have a mix of diesel and petrol in it
MAF sensor. Still reading so not throwing a code but reading wrong. Unplug it and it will disable it and use default values
fantastic video,so much you can learn from this...keep up the good work lads
Enjoyed the fault finding in fairness, hope you crack it
There must be a air flap or something that had got stuck cause its been sat around for so long (or i could be completely wrong and it wouldn'tbe the first time). Another banging video. Always a great watch.

OK, but like I suggest below - not bad fuel problem.
Air fuel mixture issue, possibly sticky throttle once you get driving it will run ok just drive it everyday needs a good run will get better I had a hyundai also
Drain the tank, put fresh fuel in it and it will run sweet. Did you scan it after the EML came on? That could give you an idea of which way to go.
Loving the longer video today. Perhaps it would be worth draining the fuel and starting with some decent E5 and some injector cleaner?
Good morning Rob and Chris. Great little video, that was a lot of hard work but you got there. Thank you for taking the time to upload another video.. Ged
I'd love to see another short video on this.
Mystery air lock ??? Cracking podcast as usual Lads well-done

Rob, i had a very similar fault when my CAT colapsed blocking the exhaust, the car couldn't run because it was choking on it's own fumes.
Sunday roast, large glass of port, and a big dose of SRUK!, perfick!! 👌👌
You need Jonny Smiths can of hope lol ( fresh fuel)😅
i like the dvla ones its good content. didnt even think about abandoned roadside seizures
DVLA (or rather their 3rd party agent NSL) only have the power to seize from the roadside or public areas (like carparks)
Well I really enjoyed that, got my amateur mechanic brain going. Cannot wait to see if my "bad fuel, possibly petrol/diesel mix" conclusion is wrong like I expect it is.
Great video. Enjoyed watching you problem solving

I've had a few of these with similar issue, knackered cat.
Interesting. Are you saying that there's a restriction in the exhaust (blocked cat) which in turn is restricting the engine's ability to pull enough air in?
Check the fuel rail pressure sensor on the fuel rail. I just replaced mine on a Kia (sim engine) at 142K
Another great video Chris and Rob
No key, No problem give Aiden a call 😊😂
@@1981zayn he’s your man lol 😂
His real name is Idan!!!!
anyone know his business name or number?
@@PaulX SE Car Keys. His name is Iden
Intriguing problem, nicely illustrated in your recording; please let us know if the new set of injectors solves the issue. Cheers 👍
Sounded like an airlock and you turning it over while the fuel rail was off helped it release it. I would change the fuel rail/ injectors
When you were checking the injectors with those lights at about 16 to 17 minutesn in and were turning the engine over it looked like there was arcing on the bottom left of the engine , I thought. Is there an earth strap rhere? Great video, thanks.👍👍👍
yes! wee love these vids, "run of the mill" sh1t box :) love it lads
I’d be looking at the throttle body, fuel maybe suspect too so drain as matter of course
It wasgassed up and with removing injectors you allowed extra air in to clear it .had a few of these hyundais gassed up but normally go if you hold throttle to the floor while cranking
What is Gassed up? Thanks
My first thought with the car having been sat for a while was that the fuel was no good. It might have started normally with an octane booster especially if some was sprayed in as a booster to start as well.
Change the fuel, as others have said E10 soon goes off
New fuel filter and injector cleaner straight into the filter .

Great vid Rob & Chris, i think it needs a new wotsit thingy me bob 😂
It's not High and Die, it's Hyun- Day. You ain't been watching the ads have ya lol!

What about ‘Lee’ in Crewe, ‘The Car Pitch?’. He does almost daily videos on the cars he is preparing for sale. He seems thorough with the renovations.
Could be sticky butterflies in the inlet manifold lads
That just sounded flooded boys. By adding more air you leaned it out. Common thing we see when attending cars with the rac
Just a pity the RAC diagnosed a shorted coil and a blown fuse as being no fuel pressure (Hyundai i10).
Crank sensor sometimes they don't show a fault code
Bad fuel?
Fire lighters 😂
Great vid as always, How strange is that fault?
