My new to me Kenworth need some serious love . Won’t be taking it to the guy who painted my Peterbilt twice and still couldn’t get the paint to stick around the rivets. Great work! love the info !
Well thanks a lot, my friend! Rivets are always a road block for the lazy. They're also why not many painters go near semis.

You can use the same method with the tack cloth when shooting base clear. That dust builds up between coats of the base coat and then a final wipe down with the tack cloth before clearing the vehicle.
That way you get the best results.
I also tack between base clear coats. And some amount of colored dust usually comes up off of it when I do. Thanks a lot, Buddy!
Wow mate you do transform these old Trucks it's a treat to watch you work still think the older Trucks are the smart choice get you to work your magic and you,'ve got a great truck for a fraction of the cost of new ,it's Recycling at it best

Good work and good proceeds at the auction. Now to the 2000 KW with the paint problem. Have you ever heard of ice blasting? This is not as aggressive as sandblasting, but has an amazing effect without leaving any blasting residue behind. You can even blast the entire engine, gearbox, axles and so on without having to glue it on (except of course for openings etc.). Take a look at it online! I can only tell you from my own experience that it works wonderfully. I had the entire engine compartment cleaned like this because of a hydraulic pump repair on my 30t crawler excavator. Only recommended! I look forward to your next videos. Greetings Ben

Looks great Ray. Quick question, are you shooting single stage? My wife asked how come she never see’s you shooting clear, and I said “I think he’s old school, look at his gun, I think he’s shoring single stage”. Just want to make sure.
I use a siphon gun because of both the cup capacity and its location. Having a little pint cup on top and mostly in the way doesn't work for me...although I actually own two top load HVLP guns. I use a 2 1/2 gallon pressure pot for bigger jobs. Yes, I shoot single stage. It's a common misconception that base clear is the better coating. While it is more modern...the vast majority of clear coats on the market are inferior and either begin to turn yellow within five years or simply begin coming back off. It's really all about who makes the product...and not what the paint system is. Base clear is superior when it comes to having a metallic paintjob that you can use buffing compounds in its future...and that's about it. A durable and reliable single stage will last longer in most cases...remain resistant to chemicals at a higher rate...and react better to a compounding material as well. I am as old school as they come when it comes to my work ethic and product quality...but my gun and material choices are simply well thought out , tested, and proven. I’m hoping to repaint my TH-cam project truck this summer. It’s a 94 cabover freightliner. Can a hot water pressure washer be used to get most of the old paint off? Or will I need to sand it all off??
You'll have a certain degree of success with a pressure washer...particularly if it is over 3200 psi and pushing very hot water. If it's a factory paintjob or well applied though...you wont get it all off. What you'll be left with is a bit of a multilayer mess, I'm afraid. If you are set on going to bare metal regardless...I'd say go for it. Just be thoughtful about what you remove first. If there are holes or empty nutserts left behind from previously removed components... you could end up pushing a lot of water inside the cab. Might wanna put a few of those bolts back in place before you begin.
@@teams.t.e.a.m6214 thank you for the advice. Sounds like it’s a good way to start, then finish what didn’t come off with a sander. Do I need to worry about the aluminum warping from the hot water?
Curious if you’ve ever had issues with tape tracking when you mask over fresh paint? Those Crystal tack rags are my favorite also. Thanks for the video. 👍🏼
I've learned...the hard way, of coarse... about paying close attention to how many hours the previous paint has sat...as well as the shop temp it sat in...as well as the humidity...as well as the brand and type of paint it is before i consider laying stripes over it. also, I typically use 1/8" tape whenever possible to minimize my vinyl footprint. The blue paint is Nason 2K urethane...which cures out a little more quickly than the PPG 2K urethane does. The white is PPG. Thanks a lot!
@@teams.t.e.a.m6214 Good ol Nason. Thats some tough paint. I’ve sprayed a lot of it. Is the PPG Delfleet? I’ve shot a lot of that as well and really liked it.
Curious question. Why don't you sand the whole truck down wipe or wash then mask off???
The chances are just too great that a DA sander or scratch pad will scratch up the glass or chrome pieces. Around 100 percent, in fact. If you want to get right in there and leave no trace of shiny paint behind...you absolutely have to cover everything up.

Just wondering, how much dirt do you get in the paint? Do you wet down the shop??
If I look real closely...I can find a speck here and there. Never had a customer notice or complain about it. However...nearly every single truck we pull in that has been previously painted seems to be covered in it. Because of the methods i outline in this video as well as keeping the surrounding area as clean as I can...I dont really have any sort of dirt issue in my shop.

What paint and primer do you use
I use 2K urethane. The blue on this project is the Nason brand...and the white is PPG. I use PPG epoxy primers. EPX 950 is white...EPX 900 is beige...and EXP908 is black. They all are mixed 1 to 1 with the catalyst...which is EPX901
