ipod.. was and still is the best musical listening device to date...i got 120gb ipod classic and i just love it...uninterrupted music..plus by using your ipod you save your smartphone battery..
Awesome freaking editing job! I really like the new format of this! Not only that but you kept it quick, to the point and easy to follow. I want to get a broken one now just to do this.
This iPod was the better iPod. Smarter interface for navigating music. And no need for WiFi if my music is already on it.... Old doesn't necessarily mean bad!
I still use a minidisc player to listen to music. >_>; Old tech can be better than new stuff. The market doesn't always make the best decisions for everyone.
I think that what you forgot to say is that the sound on ipods are massively better than the stuff you find today, and that is why they were expensive. And you know, going out for a walk, or a stroll, without being tied to the net is darn liberating methinks.
I've been thinking of doing this (without installing Rockbox and replacing the battery) with this same model (30GB) but I'm pretty bad/nervous about breaking it should I do it?
Fantastic to see how easily you do this and thanks for illustrating it so well for us....congrats for the recycling value- rare in the electronics/computer industries! :-)
i LOVE my old ipod...mine has the squared edges even! BUT it has better sound than many of the new ones. I have three, so I should know. Anyway, I am happy to see this as I love my old one and will replace the battery first...would love to put on a new screen...tips on that one at all? Thanks so much, Cheers, Vicki
I still use my 13 years old iPod Video 30GB and my 5 years old iPod Classic 160GB. I plug them to my car stereo or home stereo. Sound is still amazing. Convenience of carrying so much music with a long power reserve and without depleting the battery of your phone.
Man, you're the best ! This is a real inspiration ! I wish I never sold my 2 iPods Classic and threw my iPod Video in the trash because it seemed completely irreparable !
Watching this again, I'm curious on how Apple stored the restore screen. I mean if you replaced the hard drive with a blank cf card, then where did it find the code to display that screen?
+MinecraftSatyr The BIOS firmware contained the message and some tiny bit of code that loaded the real OS. If it couldn't find an OS, it goes into disk mode for file transfer and says to reinstall the system files. Just like the _"No Operating System Found"_ message a PC displays if you remove all drives.
What iPod a nano, mini, 1st 2nd or 3rd gen classic or a 4th gen classic. The fourth gen photo can be modded to 256gb and the monochrome 4th gen can be modded to 128gb. The 3rd gen can be modded but only to 64gb, because of it limitations with FireWire 400. The first and 2nd gen cannot be flash moded, the mini 2nd gen can be modded to 256gb and as far as I know no one has modded a nano
I thought about doing this mod and even installing rockbox because one of the reasons I don't use my iPod is due to needing iTunes to get stuff on it. I still have my iPod and it still works. It's on it's second battery. I do like the drag and drop ease of rockbox that you mentioned. The issue is with the CF card and adaptor. Unless Tarkan offers it on Amazon then I can't get it.
I upcycled a 2nd gen iPod Mini with a 128GB CF Flash and a battery that gives me 2.3Xs the original life of the old battery for like a grand total of an estimated 50hrs of playback (never totally tested it)... Also it too is rockboxed (I was rockboxing and even before then iPod Linuxing before it was cool)... One thing you didn't mention is that the 6th and 7th gen classics can't dual boot (5.5th and older can) so if you want to rockbox them, the installer doesn't support 6th and 7th and once you manually install rockbox, it has over written the stock OS and you can't go back with out fully wiping and restoring with iTunes.
@Tinkernut I have an iPod classic 6th generation that has a screen that states charging please wait. After several hours of charging it still doesn't reboot, would you say it's a battery issue, a hard drive issue, or both?
Hey Tinketnut!!...great video. I have an old ipod classic, but it's not working because i dropped it in water. Since then its not working at all. So, I was just wondering if there is a way to fix it.
Probably new motherboard (it has probably shorted) and quite possibly a new battery and hard drive (will set you back 150$) just buy a used one off of eBay!
Can you still download rockbox to the 5th gen ipod that still has an original working hard drive on it? And when you install it onto the ipod, does it remove the songs already on the hard drive?
Since doesn't connect to the internet the files can't be erased by Apple. You own whatever is on this thing. From my perspective, that makes it profoundly more useful.
I have a 2005 Classic iPod. The guys said that it was the screen that was "broken" because it was dropped, but it wasn't dropped and the screen lights up but has something taking up all the room with an extremely small menu on the left side that you can not see?! Is the screen broken and can "How to Revive An Old iPod" fix it or is it some album cover that has taken the screen over? Also, my computer doesn't acknowledge it either.......Many thanks
just remember that you can only have so many songs until the shuffle feature makes the iPod crash or just give up on trying to shuffle on its original OS
rockbox is a dual-boot. if you reboot the ipod, the moment you see the apple logo you need to set the lock switch on the top to the locked position. now it wil boot to the apple ipod os.
I just bought a refurbished gen 5 IPod Classic. My first IPod. If/when the hard drive breaks I'll do this if it'll work exactly the same. If not, I'll try and find a new hard drive. My Sony finally broke after 5 years and I was going to buy the newest IPod Classic. Imagine my surprise. I had no idea it was discontinued. But I've heard a lot of people say that the gen 5 has better sound quality anyway. I'm happy.
What is the upper GB limit that the ipod classic will recognize? It currently has the 160GB platter drive, but I'd love to put in a 256GB Compact Flash. I hate that they keep making the local storage on apple devices smaller with each generation.
+Parley Kennelly Quite an interesting point you have there. iPhones finally come in 128GB which is still inferior to this. I'd say a 256GB Compact Flash would work fine, these came in 300GB models as well, if i'm not mistaken. I can guarantee that a 128GB card will work, but not 100% sure on anything beyond that. Since there was a 300GB model, I'd assume anything under that is most likely gonna work.
My classic 80g iPod has a battery life of about 2 minutes. Not everything is backed up. How do I get all of the data from the iPod onto my computer? Also, do replacement batteries really work with these devices? Any help is greatly appreciated!
The Creative series of players were every bit as good as iPods. Also, the very little-known RED Wolverine is also very good. Replacing any of these hard drives with SD cards gives them new life for good.
Budd i has d same piece.. But thing is its not even showing its screen means its not strting up... Can suggest sum thin... I want to try ur idea on it... Its been a while dat ipod is of no use... Thnx n nice idea...
Hi great vid but I was wondering if it is possible to extract the data music videos etc of the old apple ipod hardrive? (My ipod is broken from water damage but I hope to get my music back some how) cheers
hey tinkernut, very nice tutorial. glad to see another in IT with the same "that's not junk! do you know the other junk I could toss in that and make it useful again?!" SO's always love the hackerspace, mod anything/everything, "hoard" components for SOMETHING USEFUL mentality... however, never seem to take any of that back when SHTF. Anyways, again, great tut and as serendipity would have it: i just ran across my old ipod 1st gen- great product, far superior to anything thought of then.... however I've got a bit more to do on it than hd & os, but more room too work with in the box as well. keep it up, love seeing innovative ideas!
Can you do something similar with an old iphone. Like remove unnecessary functions (like cellular functions) and install a bigger HD to perhaps just use for music and games. Like an iPod touch.
ok that's awesome I got a fifth gen myself my problem is I will listen to some music or go yo a certain song and it just shuts off for no reason this is got a grest deal of battery left I have a lot of great soundtracks on my phone I want to download these songs all TH-cam songs to my iPod is there a great tutorial I can use to help so I like you're flash card stick idea so should i get a better battery and how big should i go or can I go thanks
I know this is late but get the iflash solo and like a sandisk 256 micro as card however if it is an 80gb 6th gen with the metal front replace the sd card with a 128gb micro sd card as the classic 6th gens can only recognise 128gb
+ALEXANDROS well i have win 10 on my ipad and it works perfect but one thing (do not try a pc game unless its old enough to handle it, no gta5 Or it will blow up
This is a great video! Thanks for sharing. I noticed though towards the end of the video that you connected your Samsung to the iPod. Your samsung seems to have a Windows interface too. How did you do that?
I went through this process with my 5thgen classic and all went well right up to the itunes restore - It is in a loop - the restore runs, the iPod boots and tells me it needs to restore... Any ideas where I missed the boat? - TIA - Randy

+V59971 i agree with you totally, I still have my 4th gen 32gb ipod video and nano
broxxad I ACTUALLY UPGRADED FROM THAT ONE ...IT SAVED ME EXTREMELY WELL ,AND ITS STILL GOING STRONG..
i also find the audio quality to be superior to the newer devices.
Awesome freaking editing job! I really like the new format of this! Not only that but you kept it quick, to the point and easy to follow. I want to get a broken one now just to do this.
I'm only aspiring to be like you, KidHaru !
Tinkernut Where you using the cross on the paper to motion track the graphics onto the paper? (Just curious)
Give it a hundred thumbs up👏👏👍👍👍👍👍😁
This iPod was the better iPod. Smarter interface for navigating music. And no need for WiFi if my music is already on it.... Old doesn't necessarily mean bad!
And its fun to have a spinning drive inside, it feel more alive ahah .
If you watch the video, no more spinning drive!
Yes :P
im still using mine play gameboy games on on rockbox is the best
In this case it does. They made a very limited number of these hard drive iPods because they suck.
I think I was more amazed by the fact you did this all with Windows on an Android tablet...HOW?! that's awesome!
Fantastic! I restored my IPod 5; still with me after 15 years! Thank you one million times : ) !!!!!!
I love how he tells you to plug it into a computer, and then procedes to take out a Samsung tablet with Windows on it.
Is a photo!
@@SMFJose its a video
Wut

“Me thinks” 😂😂 yes I agree with jar jar
I've been thinking of doing this (without installing Rockbox and replacing the battery) with this same model (30GB) but I'm pretty bad/nervous about breaking it should I do it?
sure, its not really that difficult, all you really need is the pry tool.
Fantastic to see how easily you do this and thanks for illustrating it so well for us....congrats for the recycling value- rare in the electronics/computer industries! :-)
Awesome freaking song you have playing in your newly repaired iPod. First heard in the supercuts TV commercial.
the only video on this channel i don't feel like a complete and utter noob when watching!!!
I always wanted a iPod classic, I think there would have never been a iPhone if not for this gateway device, great work thanks for the video
how on earth did you think of this, you sir a a genius
Im a subscriber of yours since the dark ages and I can honestly say this is a good comeback. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks Alex . That really means a lot!
Really good to have you back :)
Tinkernut i missed you bro
Finally! Tinker mention Rockbox!!! Rockbox rocks!
Mine's 3rd gen. Ugh i miss that ipod. I used to bring it whenever i jog, go to the mall, or stuff.
i LOVE my old ipod...mine has the squared edges even! BUT it has better sound than many of the new ones. I have three, so I should know. OMG you figured it out? Good on you, Tinkernut!
Hurray, we missed you
Thank you this was very helpful. I too love fixing old technology.
I plan on doing this! Do you have to do anything to the SD card before putting it into the adapter?
Man, you're the best ! This is a real inspiration ! I wish I never sold my 2 iPods Classic and threw my iPod Video in the trash because it seemed completely irreparable !
picked up a A1099, from a garage sale. thanks for this cool video but what if it isnt powering on? defective battery? thanks
The video that started it all for me ~6 years ago. Who knows where I would be without having seen this
Watching this again, I'm curious on how Apple stored the restore screen. I mean if you replaced the hard drive with a blank cf card, then where did it find the code to display that screen?

Great now I'm going to want to start looking for old broken iPods, but is there also similar fixes than can be done to an iPod touch?
an iPod touch is basically an iPhone without the phone and is basically a completely different device as a result, so no
I thought about doing this mod and even installing rockbox because one of the reasons I don't use my iPod is due to needing iTunes to get stuff on it. I still have my iPod and it still works. I'm planning to do more hardware projects like this. You can go to my website for projects I have in store next!
Tinkernut What is your video editor? :D
Tinkernut do you think this could be done on an iPod Nano generation 5 is the one I'm thinking about?
Xoan Cosmed
couldn't you in theory design a dev board that would fit in the casing that would have wireless internet capabilities?
Correct
So you finally got it working. Congrats!
did it on my ipod nano 2nd. Love the drag and drop feature :)
@Tinkernut I have an iPod classic 6th generation that has a screen that states charging please wait. After several hours of charging it still doesn't reboot, would you say it's a battery issue, a hard drive issue, or both?
Knowing how to make use of older gadgets is always the way to go!
Your so awesome dude... Thats why i love watchin your videos . anyway thanks for this tutorial man keep it up
Thanks Lucky Lozano ! I really appreciate the support!

Can a larger sd card be installed say a 128 GB?
+David Borcean I dont think space matters bro aslong as you dont have too little, considering you are mentioning 128gb youll be smooth sailiing
just remember that you can only have so many songs until the shuffle feature makes the iPod crash or just give up on trying to shuffle on its original OS
Question could I use a SD to compact flash adapter with the compact flash adapter in this video?
rockbox is a dual-boot. if you reboot the ipod, the moment you see the apple logo you need to set the lock switch on the top to the locked position. now it wil boot to the apple ipod os.

It will work the same, just opt out the rockbox.
Would be awesome if you have an update to this!
I remember those too! Ah memories....
You can dual boot iPod firmware and rockbox automatically .just check your device. Mines an iPod nano 1 gen
dude you are the man worked first time

Any ideas on replacing the battery, or am I stuck with that for the time being?
My classic 80g iPod has a battery life of about 2 minutes. Not everything is backed up. How do I get all of the data from the iPod onto my computer? Also, do replacement batteries really work with these devices? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Going to do that. Is there a way to pull music off the hard drive? The term came off the motherboard when I changed out the batt.
this is crazy easy to do on the old iPod mini's as they already have the same connector used on CF cards
Exactly
The Creative series of players were every bit as good as iPods. Also, the very little-known RED Wolverine is also very good. Replacing any of these hard drives with SD cards gives them new life for good.
Can this be done with an iPod touch? An old 2nd gen? What would it perform like?
Nice! Will the Rock Box allow meet load ripped music to the iPod? (...which iTunes/iOS devices will not.)
Yes and you should be able too on iOS as well
Was that a 30gb version or a 60/80gb version?
Budd i has d same piece.. But thing is its not even showing its screen means its not strting up... Can suggest sum thin... I want to try ur idea on it... Its been a while dat ipod is of no use... Thnx n nice idea...
What are you running on the tablet to boot into windows?
Hi great vid but I was wondering if it is possible to extract the data music videos etc of the old apple ipod hardrive? (My ipod is broken from water damage but I hope to get my music back some how) cheers
what kind of tablet is that? did you install windows yourself?
Gig that was awesome, loving the new video style..
what software do you use for editing your videos ? is it final cut pro on Mac ?
Is possbile in Rockbox rate tracks (by stars) like in original apple system? Will be this rating also displayed in iTunes?
Thank you

so awesome!! thanks man!
how much gb max card should i buy?
Can I install Rockbox even with the current working default hard drive in there?
Thanks for the video,
I have an iPod video 5G 80GB. What kind of hard drive do you recommend me to replace the original one?
Tank you.

PS, where do I find those replacement parts? I am in Canada in a small town so need to order stuff...thanks so much!
Vicki
Hi!.. is there any Hard drive for replacement. ?
Brand new Ipod now. Thanks so much.
How can u use your galaxy Tab as a Computer that's awesome.

he edited the video so that he doesn't has to put a freakin monitor flat on the table (or worse if he uses a laptop)

This is a great video! Thanks for sharing.
I noticed though towards the end of the video that you connected your Samsung to the iPod. Your samsung seems to have a Windows interface too. How did you do that?
so what was the problem in the earlier video? It seems like you did the same steps but this time it worked !!!
An ribbon cable, of what i remember.
It was the same steps. The issue was that the hard drive ribbon cable was corrupt initially, so I could never get it to work.
hey how were you running windows on your tablet, is it an emulator, remote view or dedicated windows machine
it's special effects. Motion tracking.
This was a great video my only question is what kind of memory card.
Compact Flash (CF)
Ty
Do you have iTunes installed on that Galaxy Tab? Or was it just remote viewing your computer?
motion tracking
I use a ipod classic 5 in my car if i install rockbox on it will it still work with the data cable of my car?
I went through this process with my 5thgen classic and all went well right up to the itunes restore - It is in a loop - the restore runs, the iPod boots and tells me it needs to restore... Any ideas where I missed the boat? - TIA - Randy
Where can I perhaps download that sound when the face on the Ipod turn's into a frowny face? Please respond ASAP! Thanks!
Hey can you show me how to do this on a black and red iPod 4 gen
your website is not working right now are you doing some updates or it crached ?
Would this work with the iPod 3rd gen?
Would it be possible to do this with an SD card rather than compact flash? It seems to me that would be a bit cheaper.
It would have to have a "zif" connection.
thanks for this video. Having "frozen" issues with my Classic.
Great video tinkernut/gigifide love the new format. Windows on a table?
