Do you still use an old school iPod?
I still use mine all the time, it allows you so listen to music while being disconnect from your phone, something a lot of people could use...
Its also helpful if your constantly using different devices that don't always have your music library on them.

Nice! You got a 5.5 gen or the 5th gen (enhanced). This one has a really nice Wolfson DAC in it and is considered the best sounding iPod. I have a 5.5 gen as well with an iFlash adapter and a 128GB sd card and it sounds great.

The scratch remover also known as cutting compound is meant to be used with a cloth wheel on a bench grinder. It polishes things beautifully when used that way

  • @mineclashtv9709

Some things I learned from DankPods
    1. Brasso actually works wonders on the front plastic. It really cleans up and polishes effectively, even though it is a metal polisher.
    2. If you want to remove the scratches from the back metal cover... you need to replace it. Most other things just make it look worse
    3. When opening the iPod, don't push up with your tool to avoid any damage. You need to slide the tool in, push a little down and inwards. The plastic clips should open up.
    4. If you don't want the CF adapter to be that loosely inside, put a small piece of foam on it.
    5. If you do the flash mod (SD card) and it doesn't work with the cheapo CF adapter, make sure the SD card really is in there. If it still doesn't want to work, get an iFlash CF adapter.

This video was a huge help to me, as I literally rebuilt my 5th generation, A1136, 60GB (with video) by using this exact tutorial. I also used the compact flash adapter. Reason for my post today (in addition to thanking Hugh Jeffreys) is to further recommend 2 things. I don't like the PCB rattling around in there. It's smaller than the original hard drive, and the rubber pieces don't really help. So, I'd recommend using dual-sided 3M sticky tape to make it adhere to the inside of the opened iPod cover. This does make it harder to connect the flex cable at the bottom though, but patience there paid off for me. Also, I ended up dropping my iPod a few times, accidentally & it stopped working. Once re-opened, I was surprised to see the flash adapter had pulled off the pins, so I ended up using surface tape + a couple of drops of hot glue to the top of the flash card adapter/PCB so now it can't slide off from the pins, if dropped again. Thus, now it won't rattle around inside, and if dropped, I won't lose connection either. Other than that, *great* video!! Thank you, Hugh!

My 120GB iPod Classic is still in perfect condition, having been in a brilliant case from day one, God knows how many years ago.
Sadly, it's sitting in a Charging Dock, not charging, but not holding the charge and is not recognized by iTunes anymore, although it still plays the stuff via the headphones, that was already synced to it.
Having abandoned my iPhone last year, I was hoping to carry on using the Classic in the car.
But, the Car Stereo is not recognizing it either.
It is, so far as I can see........defunct! 😉
Pity, because it was great to use in the car and at music gigs to play songs between sets.

If you would like to carry on with the aesthetic restoration, I'd probably recommend a rubbing compound and dremel with a rotary buffing tool attachment. That will yields faster and hands down better results in seconds-- Really buffs the stainless steel up nicely. If it can't then the next best bet would probably be some form of sand blasting to strip a tiny layer off to then start from scratch.

I already disconnected from my iPhone and using a Motorola Razr V3 now. Just carrying the iPhone around for my music. If the iPod arrives I can sell my iPhone and live happily. 6:52 I like that you're using iTunes 11.4 for this. That's also the version that my larger secondary iTunes library is pinned on!

I still use my original 80 gig as the recording medium for my Alesis 16bit ProTrack stereo audio recorder. I want that msata 1tb mod you mentioned for my iPod to try in this recorder! It would make the battery life epic and record time infinite.

Just got one yesterday. Still testing the old components. Think the battery might need a swap out. Not sure if i should do an SSD conversion if I'm going to disassemble it yet.

I used that compact flash adapter once on an iPod classic and it didn’t work that great. Just the slightest bump it would come loose and you would have to open it up and put it back. I ended up switching to the microSD card adapter.

8:05 no, that is because memory card capacity is measured in GB, and iPod shows capacity in GiB. 64 GB = 59.6 GiB and 128 GB = 119.2 GiB.

Removing scratches basically requires just making finer scratches then buffing it out with a polishing compound. If you had a way to re-etch the info on the back it would look sweet, but if not that’s probably as good as it will get without messing up the logo

Mother's m&a polish, soak into printer paper. Use that to rub the back of the case with. Acts like 2K grit sandpaper leaving a finish that is breathtaking to say the least. Works best on aluminum, however left amazing results on my 4140 Chromoly stainless.

Hi Hugh, I have 30Gb 5th gen iPod, that apparently burnt when using a cheap USB car charger. I don't get any sign of life from it. I have been trying to find the maintenance guide for it praying to find a blown fuse. Does it have a fuse or should I look for something else? Any tips are more than welcome. Best regards from Brazil!

Great , simple video. For those (like me ) not having access to that JOSCO thing (which looks good) white stone polishing clay is great for cleaning and polishing the ipod.
Just a question: I have noticed that my beloved 5.5th iPod Video external click wheel sound doesn´t work anymore (clicker settings in Yes, of course) I have googled it a lot but I cannot find where is the part producing that clicker sound. Click Wheel? Headphones jack? Motherboard? BIG mistery! Any idea?
I have recently replaced the screen and I thinks it´s when I messed with something but I don´t know what. Thanks.

that black bar you warmed up is meant to be used with a powered buffing wheel, like pro's use for polishing.

In Joscos defense, that compound is meant for a spinning wheel. Not meant to be used with a microfiber towel. Meant to be used with more friction and heat.

Hi Hugh... I've been looking to have my classic 160 Ipod repaired for 2 months.. it would not turn on. Today 2 months after it finally started taking a charge... I cannot explain this - I really thought the battery was toast and was ready to ship it out. - Love the unit I use it in my chrysler van that was pre-wired for it and plays through the console... anyway I'm still perplexed as to why it just started working again.

That black compound is for a cotton buffing wheel on a bench grinder or similar. You will also get different grades. It will work fantastic in the right application...
Keep going with the metal polish on a micro fibre in circular motions with firm pressure and you will get your results.. there’s probably a lot better products than Brasso too..

ebay, you can get the iflash, get some micro sd cards, and get a nice big battery since you have the big 80gb model. You could get a nice terabyte in micro sd cards and a huge ass battery that will last literally like 40 hours.

Microfiber isn't great for polishing. I'd recommend getting a proper polishing cloth.
I use Cape Code metal polishing cloths to polish my watches, and they're made for polishing silver, gold, brass, copper, stainless steel etc. I'd recommend checking them out next time you need to polish something like this. The added benefit is that they come preloaded with polishing material, so it's good to go out of the bag.

Capacities of all storage devices - hard drives, USB memory sticks, sd cards, ssds, are given as the 'raw' total capacity. As soon as the device is formatted, some of the capacity is 'lost' to indexes, allocation tables etc. It is unavoidable and not a con, as some people think. This is how it has always been.

Is the restore function contained within the 'basic' software package that came with the original iPod? (I have a 5th gen 30g + software, still operational, although battery is weak). And I also heard, that Apple has terminated all iTunes on their site - I never used that service anyway, as I had 30 full length movies on mine to watch while on long flights.
