  • BMW S1000R gets an update for 2017. Improved electronics, more power, less weight and an Akrapovic slip-on. We spend a week with the 2017 BMW S1000R, we put it next to the old model, we made a little comparison with the S1000RR, we tested it during the rush-hour traffic and we took it outside the city for a B-Road Blast!

Thanks to you, I've finally learned how to properly pronounce Akra-povic! I was doing it all wrong by saying Ak-ra-po-vic :) The comparison between the R and RR was a nice touch. I ride a 2015 R myself and I completely agree that this bike has the potential to transform any rider into a hooligan. It has so much power and yet makes one feel so confident about being able to take any corner at any speed. I'm 46 and I'm barely mature enough to handle it!

I've owned the '16 model for about a year now. I've put just under 10k miles. The bike still acts like it did the day I brought her home. Absolutely incredible. I'm still blown away sometimes at what this bike's allows me to do. If there's 2 words I could use to describe it, they would be: Confidence Inspiring. I never felt comfortable enough to really lean on previous bikes. With this one, I was touching my knees to the ground after a couple thousands miles.

I bought one in 2015, so those slight differences you mentioned. I had an Akrapovic slip-on fitted to mine and it was very sweet without being offensive to anyone. I definitely agree about the smoother roads only preferably. I found some reasonable roads on other bikes could be really harsh on the S1,000R. How can you not get it through that first thousand ks and the rev limit opened up? You were only using the lower half of the revs it's capable of, and although they do pull surprisingly well even at those lower revs, the power just goes up and up as the engine screams insanely and what's available after about 10,000 is just pure insanity. You also had a brand new one so tighter engine and most likely running on mineral oil at that stage means slower still. I appreciate your review, but with a tight new engine limited to the low powered half of the revs it's by no means a complete review. Please do it again with one fully loosened up and unrestricted. I know I was just mesmerised on my test ride on the bikes test bike which had only just been unlocked when I went for a ride at the ultra smooth transition on full throttle from around 1,500 rpm to nearly 12,000 rpm in 3rd gear and the strong but smooth increase in acceleration till the camera on top of my carbon fibre Rossi AGV helmet started to tear my head off. Mind you that was a perfect helmet for that bike, just not with a go pro stuck on top. Once loosened up properly they are a schizophrenic bike. They can behave so tamely and in an instant become a raging insane monster. Man I miss mine. An idiot in a car took care of the bike and me when he lunged his jacked up Jeep wagon out in front of me while I was legally cruising at 100 kph with just about 20 feet to try and wash off some speed. I'm alive, though stuffed, the bike is alive somewhere, despite having the frame cracked from me laying it down so hard. I had to sell it though as the damage to me makes riding any great distance impossible and a sports style bike just too hard on my shoulders that got torn up pretty bad like the rest of me. I hit the car chest first and pulverised my left upper chest and tore my shoulders up by using my arms like doing a 100 kph reverse push up off the side of that Jeep. I had 5 holes in my left lung and lost my spleen. I've been riding for over 50 years and this was by far the most awesome bike I've ever owned so naturally everybody had to try and kill me on it, arghhhh!

Thanks for the great review and video quality..
I'm sure the bike fells and performs good. I've noticed the trend in bikes today: first non existent pillion seat. A lot of riders would like too take their significant other for a ride. These perches are almost non functional and place a passenger too high and uncomfortable. Gone are the days in the 80s and 90s where you could have both. Let's be honest. I've ridden for almost 30 years in all kinds of bikes and in my experience the majority of riders will never even come close by a mile to the bikes limits and capabilities.
Also newer bikes are very angular and full of flat edges and lack the beauty of bikes of yesteryear. They look more like machines the Borg would ride. Most new owners chuck the stock exhaust which has been thoroughly engineered for the bike and spend big bucks on performance units that will not help them be better riders or enhance their skills; not even close since they cannot exploit all the bike has to have in stock form.

setting up position on a highway will be tough 70 MPG + will be a struggle in a little windy day and that is maximized without fairings, RR is much better and geared better for a highway and touring.
