I found your TH-cam channel this week and am enjoying watching your videos (lots to catch up on). I can see a lot of care has been put in to the content and the editing. Great work! Damien in Peterborough, UK
Thanks Petroos. For weekend touring, definitely. For daily use, depends upon your size! I'm 192cm and the leg position was far too tight for me. Which also means long distance touring could also be somewhat uncomfortable for a taller rider.
Lamb Chop Rides , I thought that, and was looking to trade my s1000r for a Speed Triple RS, after 10,000km on the BM. I was surprised that the Speed was not the character machine I had thought it was, and was similarity sterile. Got back on my BM and thought how incredibly competent and interesting it is. I think I need an older Soeed without the electrickery of the BM and RS - the sterile feel and supreme competence is what makes it seem boring. Will ride the Super Duke and Aprilla to see if they are the difference I seek
Cheers mate. I think I know what you mean. It was very much the Iceman to my FZ1's Maverick! Beautiful machine, but I wonder if it would still excite, once you'd gotten used to it?
My FZ1-N has continually surprised me. 150hp and no electric gadgets whatsoever mean I have to keep my wits about me. The odd squirrelly moment, hard on the gas out of a bend followed by a sketchy overbrake into a hairpin reminds you that you're alive! Plus the power after 6000rpm, despite the fact that it's a 12 year old bike, is still astonishing.
Something about this bike reminds me of the movie, "Christine". I think " a bit daunted" sums it up quite accurately. That awesome beast of a motor with the quick shifter though, so nice. With all the electrical gadgets,no clock? Probably next to the button for vertical mode. Once again, great video, the scenery is amazing!
Hi Andy , great video! I heard you said it's a great machine but not very comfortable. What do you think the most comfortable naked bike, eg Cb1000r , and mt10sp for touring? I'm 6 foot tall btw. Thank you!
My CB1000r it’s pretty comfortable. I’ve racked up 7000km since August and with no knee, back or hip pain! The MT-10 is probably the roomiest option I’ve tried so far though.
Great bike but as you said would prefer a lower foot peg. That's why I prefer the riding position on the XR. Same engine but more comfy and practical as well.
Seems to be the way for many folks. I would try, but I'm not so into the plastics right now. The pegs on my Yamaha are a little lower. Problem is that I keep scraping them on the floor now!!
The seat was horrible,, in the showroom. Maybe the 2nd generation,, if i have the money! Great reviews, fantastic video, therapeutic. Keep the reviews coming
Nice vid! Haven't test-ridden an S1000R, yet. Been leaning towards a GSA to replace the killed R9T. Want to take longer rides and increase passenger comfort.
Thanks Jake! Depending on how long in the leg you are, I would say it's possible this would be a little tight for longer journeys. Apparently the Urban GS is a bit roomier.
I think you would've preferred the XR, Matey. With more leg room, walnuts intact and a wimmins on the back to keep you warm. Dunno what the missus would've said though.
Hey Andy, have you considered a career in TV, Radio or perhaps Motorcycle journalist? You certainly has the talent, the voice and of course your sense of humor.
Haha! But then I'd have to answer to someone other than the viewers and do as I'm told!! I'm sure it would be cool, but maybe this way the freedom keeps things 'real'? But thanks in any case! :D
You remind me Jeremy Clarkson except without having to punch the producer. I think you could be the motorbike version of TopGear. Btw if u ever considering visiting Tunisia (this is where i am from) or Malaysia where i work, it would be awesome to ride together, i can get u a bike in Malaysia. I am riding from Malaysia to Tunis next year n now i am in the planning process. Cheers
Viper6 agree but I reckon I have used Rain mode three times in 10000 km - each time not in wet weather but to damp down throttle when Commissaire in a bicycle race (sitting on 30-45 km/h is tedious). I think the throttle is fine in Road mode for the wet, and I am a pretty awful and inexperienced rider. I would use the Rain mode equivalent (forget what it is called) at the slightest hint of rain on a GSXS1000 or XSR900, as they do not have a throttle as sweet
brian glendenning I agree with you analogy. Each bike is different and has a different throttle response. My FJ-09 has a very snatchy throttle, that could get new riders in a heap of trouble in wet conditions lol. Ride safe.
Very pleasant video. Enjoyed it a lot. You was speaking about knee position , was wondering how tall are you to have more understanding of leg "comfort" :)
What a great trip that must have been, I was actually thinking about buying a S1000R but even for a short sod like me I just did not feel comfortable would have been nice to test it in a place like that though instead of the Straightness of the roads around Hamburg LOL
That may be my next bike. Thanks for sharing. How do you like the Garmin Virb 360 btw? Those shots of you are nice but I did not see any forward shots. Too much vibration?
I don't think you'd go far wrong. Lovely machine. As some have said, a little too 'clean' but that's what comes from good engineering I suppose! The VIRB 360 was really good. The post production involved was a bit of a faff though. I unfortunately cocked up the footage that was forward facing. (it was actually a sphere, but I deleted the front half! What a plonker!!). Vibrations weren'T really a problem as the software stabilised the footage in post.
I just sat on a S1000R... Awesome if you are not a tall rider, the XR is way higher. No hydraulic clutch though (WTF, BMW, at this price point?). The clutch is hard as hell, granted that with the quick-shifter you won't use it that much, but still.
I guess that coming from my heavy clutched FZ1, I didn't really notice how heavy it was on the S1000R. I also play guitar, so my left hand is like the jaws of life! :D Definitely a shame that it's a bit cramped as I don't really like the look of the XR. But that motor is an absolute beaut!
Had heard that the quickshifter is much better the the healtech one. You should do the suspension mods to the fz1, much better and better brakes as well.
@@AndyManCam I've got a nitron rear shock which for me was a massive improvement and I've got the 04-06 R1 front end on mine. Straight bolt on upgrade which is better suspension and mono block calipers. I've also got an 09 R1 master cylinder which was a big improvement. Overall makes a big difference and considering how much better it is it's cheap to.
Thanks Robert. I'm not sure about the year of the bike I'm afaid. I know that it was from a hire firm, so it was practically straight out of the showroom. The helmet is a Nishua Enduro GT. There's a link to all of the gear in the description. Cheers!
Andy if you get the chance you should really give the XR a try. At least your knees won't be around your ears and you can have as much fun as on the S1000R. PS. Is there a dictionary coming out of all your unique colloquialisms? 🤔 Nice one matey 👍
Yeah I think that, very much like the GS, eventually I'm going to have to give in and try one! I think I need to build a larger repertoire before the dictionary comes together! :)
Heyyy, I find your video absolutely great, congratulations! The landscapes are splendid. Do you have the opportunity to share the road trip plan? Regards from France !
Thanks Robin. They behave surprisingly well actually. As long as the speed stayed under 120km/h. Over that the peak pulls on your neck a bit when you look sideways and the noise increases a fair bit. Luckily you can also remove the peak completely as I tend to do when I’ve got a bit of motorway riding to do. Then its much quieter and no neck pain!
Thanks Jolly R! That tune is called 'Happiness' and it's actually one of my own creations! It's currently not digitally available, but I'm working on it! There are CD's though. But with other songs and lyrics and vocals and stuff! Or have a look at th-cam.com/users/apage16 Me, but with more hair!
@@AndyManCam What a surprise to know that you created that lovely tune. I took a look around your page and realized that you have great potential. From now on I am a new subscriber. PS we all had more hair at that time 😔😢
I bought one in 2018 with the Dynamic and Sports packages, and I absolutely love this bike! (despite the BMW squinty headlights) I opted for the OEM flyscreen which keeps the windblast down, and believe me this bike is FAST so you really will appreciate a little protection from the wind. The new QuickShift Pro is amazing and combined with the slipper clutch, produces very slick gearchanges in both directions without any need to blip the throttle etc. I never thought I'd need it as I mostly upchanged clutchless anyway but the QuickShift Pro sets a whole new standard of smoothness. The bike is so nimble it feels like thought control on corners. No longer any need to husstle to get around corners fast. Accelleration in Dynamic or Dynamic Pro mode is eyepopping and you need to keep a firm grip when really going for it! I'm 5ft 8 inches tall and this fits me perfectly. Previous bikes have needed adjusting to be comfortable but this is as close to perfect as you can get straight from the dealer. Long rides are no problem and it's certainly nore comfy than any of the sportsbikes I've owned. I have owned literally dozens of bikes over many years of riding, but nothing I've owned comes close to the sheer fun factor served up by this slightly insane but totally fantastic bike!
Lance Flanagan need to have throttle closed and hand off the clutch to downshift - hand off the clutch for the upshift. Quickshifter works better when you are giving it the beans - better to use clutch if dawdling about.
Not at all for upshifts. Just move the shifter up and that's all. No need to close the throttle or touch the clutch lever. The quickshifter does that in combination with the ECU automatically. The higher the revs the better/smoother it works. It is pretty addictive and always perfect.
