All bikes with high power have at least a little wobble - that's why they have steering dampers. The more expensive ones have adjustable steering dampers which is what the s1000r needs especially since it has an upright rider position. Note: the s1000rr has an adjustable steering damper that is an upgrade over the one in the s1000r. If you don't want a little wobble in your life then get an adjustable steering damper for your liter bike.
Very good point and thanks for the hint - it may be useful. S1000XR also has had a bit of that. I haven't noticed that much of it in the new, 2021 one though.
Have an old 2014 s1kr. Full acropovic system and a power commander. Also a 20mm bar riser. It’s a beast, sounds mean popping on the overrun. In dynamic in third it wheel stands at 100kmph nice and predictably ♥️🏍
I have a 17 R, but (deliberately) have the non-electronic suspension. For years never had the wobble, but put on a new set of Rosso IV and had a little wobbling with a strong cross wind when following a vehicle at 110+ Kph. My theory - Rosso IV seems to have a slightly different profile than the Rosso III and Metzlers I have had on the before, I am a little heavier, and I reckon after approaching 70000km the steering damper might be a little tired.
The exhaust pops are found in Dynamic Pro mode. Also, I think the Sports version with the Akrapovic muffler has similar sound and loudness to the previous bike. MOTORRAD list both at 94db.
Akrap will pop definitely more loudly when revved. Not sure though if it can be influenced by a riding mode. In cars there may be exhaust valves that open to let that happen and I'd be skeptical if S1000R has such a valve. Would be interesting to have this confirmed.
The handlebar shaking at speed is rider issue, used to happen to me when you go fast and subconsciouslly you hold on tighter with dominant throttle hand which induces the shaking. Relax your grip/arms more and use legs to hold on bike
This issue is present on S1000R and used to be on the previous S1000XR (1st gen. only), so if only this platform causes it out of 40+ motorcycles that I've ridden, I'd risk saying that it's rather connected to the platform itself. Especially that it happens repeatedly and since I've got it on video, there's no doubt that it's there.
For me it is still a mystery why BMW decided to give an S bike the headlamps of a G 310. They missed a big opportunity to give all the S line the same streamlined double headlamp that looks amazing in both the S1000RR and XR. This was a major turndown for me (alongside the exhaust pops) and I kept my previous gen S1000R
It’s ridiculous this “headshake issue” is still around 🤦🏻♂️ I still think it’s a combination of 2 things, the DDC not being 100% calibrated for the rider and the swingarm not being long enough. There’s always so much conversation around steering dampeners, but those are just helping to mask the issue that’s going on.
I myself wonder what the reason for this symptom is but I guess it's a mix of quite a few different things. Since BMW's engineers cannot figure it out, I assume that it's got to be really big and difficult to eliminate. Now that's a pity indeed.
Not sure you can actually do it in a first gear unless you've got insanely different sprockets installed. If you can ride at 150 km/h in an upright position for longer, then well, go ahead. It's just not exactly the point here. Either get an RR and hide behind a windshield and get to 300 km/h or a GS or an RT with a windshield ot travel this way comfortably. Of you're you're right that it's a high performance bike and I myself rode it at over 250 km/h on a German highway but that's far from being pleasant for a long time. But yeah, it's a bloody beast and it can still go while I cannot keep holding on to it. Cheers!
The handlebars going left to right issue can be just down to your tyre type. Or tyre pressures, ive owned this bike for a while and never had such a problem
It was an almost new dealer's motorcycle with what I believe was an original tire. Perhaps inflation level plays a certain role here. Also, not in 100% of cases the wobbly behavior appears - same as with the previous generation of the R.
Il keep my 2014 same exact frosted blue like the one in your video.much prettier headlight. New one is a disaster. Should have gone much more violent, no scooter type.
Bought a used, low Km's, 2020 S1000r, love it. The power in town, the weight/balance, is simply amazing. I kinda like the odd-looking face, comparing it to the new LED version. It stands out a bit more
I'm glad that you're enjoying your R. The 1st face is surely original. Not to say that it's necessarily pretty but we know that not everything needs to be always pretty if it's got other strong points.
Thanks. I've got some experience with the previous generation, so R1200R and as far as I remember I considered it a quite neutral bike at that time. I believe that S1000R might force slightly more aggressive position, and that would be understandable. But it was a while ago for me and the previous generation of the R12X0R, so might just as well not be accurate right now.
Right, if you steadily approach that number, it will all be great - the issue unveils itself when you accelerate really hard so that the front wheel becomes sort of "light". I wonder if mirrors could make a difference here but I doubt that.
Some even claim that the way the sit on a bike or where they place weight matters in this particular case. I've noticed that focusing on holding the bike with one's knees instead of "pulling" the bars seems to help. I think this one would be worth a try. Still, as we know, this can be done 100% properly with the right equipment installed - as you mention.
Im going to buy an s1000xr 1st gen or an s1000r 1st gen too i really dkn what to choose because i don't have a lot of experience in motorcycle , i want to know ur opinion about that which is more fun to ride and which is more powerful?
I'd say that they are the same in terms of performance as the exact same engine sits there in both. The possible differences in fuel mapping shouldn't be huge but you might feel that the single R is quicker or more brutal as it doesn't have and wind protection, so you literally "feel" the speed more. It doesn't mean that you're going faster, so it depends on what you want. On an XR you may ride faster for longer before your neck starts hurting. On an R I wouldn't go for a long ride outside of the city because of that reason. In the city however there's a lighter feeling of an R versus a more comfortable and higher position on an XR that lets you see better around. Likely the R is more fun in general and I'd say that it is as you'd expect it to be while the XR of the 1st generation could be expected to be a comfortable touring motorcycle and in my eyes it isn't really. The second generation of it - definitely is, but that's a whole different story.
Slipon won't do anything, take a look at the current Can it's free flowing, it's same as R and XR, just sowing machine noises. You need full headers. And the transmission of this new bike is silky smooth
The exhaust sound doesn't work like that. In "turbo" style mufflers, it's about how much perforation there is inside the main tube in the muffler, how much deadening material there is, what it is and how thick it is and how long the pipe is and what its diameter is. All "turbo" mufflers are technically free flowing. You might want to check my wid with the 1st gen. S1000R with Akrapovic and with a stock exhaust. In person they sound much, much differently. Not so much difference in terms of volume though: th-cam.com/video/6VwMf9EoCY8/w-d-xo.html
@@VToldsMotoShow i had a 17 S1000R. With Akra HP muffler and stock cat/headers, changed the headers to Akra and kept the muffler and it sounded completely different bike, the new Euro5 cat/headers are even quieter than previous Euro4. Changing just the slipon muffler does little difference when compared to the headers & stock slipon/muffler combo
I think that you put it nicely into words. One may say that it's "totally proper" and not controversial at all. However, this brought the controversy itself, didn't it?
👍🏻 very neutral review. Please get your hands on the triumph tiger 1200GT. I am planning to sell by xDiavel which was predominantly for city riding. I want a summit bike for weekend highway riding (single pillion, 200-300km) as well as some evening B-road exploration, would you recommend 1000R with windscreen, handle bar risers and a comfort seat, or the tall imposing XR or the good ol bulky GS, for my specific use case?
Yup, it's set and in a few days I'm getting the new Triumph Tiger 1200 GT for a few days. I'm pretty excited about it as on paper it looks very good. In your case, if you mention highway rides, S1000R may be quite inconvenient with any kind of windshield. If you've been on an XDiavel so far, then on one hand you may lack good control over the bike in the city if you'd go with S1000XR and in the case of the GS, you might complain that there's not that much maximum power. However, coming off of a V2 engine with lots of torque, if you don't aim at racing anybody on long stretches of roads, the GS may actually provide better low speed performance than S1000XR, so in the end of the day that would be my choice since you mentioned some of those things.
@@VToldsMotoShow thank bro, looking forward to your review of the triumph 1200gt. GS for me now is a no go, because of the 1300GS being announced later this year. After taking test rides, I have finally reduced my consideration-set to the bmw r1250r and the Ducati pikes peak. If I opt for the much more pricey pikes peak, I need to work towards a Canadian and US cross country tour to justify the expense and purpose of that bike 😅, though I desire to live longer just yet. I find the R1250R better than the S1000R because of excellent torque, I reckon it might even have a quicker 0-60mi speed or atleast it feels that way, with a more comfortable ergonomic. Hope you get a chance to critique the R1250R and the Pikes Peak, sooner than later. Thanks for your content and reviews bro.
For my opinion , the new models are friendlier (due to Euro 5?!?) than the previous one, faster on paper, quieter, safer due to electronics, but they are slowly losing their personality. does not apply to all models but I think in most. what do you think?? is the reason I stay in to my K13R Cheers 🍺
Very good points! All of them are 100% valid! By the way - I love the K1300R and it was the most uniquely-looking BMW motorcycle ever I think. Fantastic bike! The new S1000R seems more brutal performance in terms of a position and perhaps handling as it's more extreme and lighter, also quicker due to that but as you said - more "friendly" in terms of noise and electronics.
@@VToldsMotoShow yes i know you like k13r 😀😀, we discussed this in another of your videos and you mentioned that you will create a video for the k 1300 R and S.
Oh did I?! Actually the K1300S was the first bike that I've exceeded 250 km/h on :). Great memories. Now they're hard to find as they're not offered anymore.
I agree, and I think you only need to look at the "kind of the same as everyone else" headlight on the new one to prove your point. It looks "better," arguably, but the individuality is gone. The old one you can tell is a BMW from a distance. The new one, not so much. I prefer the old. Although I wouldn't mind LEDs haha
@@matthewmaxwell-burton4549 yikes! Well steep rake angles and shorter trail may lead to quick steering but it also compromises stability. The Yamaha MT09 also suffers from this at high speeds too. Good God man, just saw this thread. The standard piece of shit Ohlin's damper is crap, I owner a 2011 BMW S1000RR and now a 2016 BMW S1000R. Get a real Ohlins damper, adjust the setting about 50% or a bit above or below. Then accelerate hard, I did and my problem disappeared. Yours will too. Pass the word to those reading this thread. Other people who suggested the same thing, it was crap back in 2011 as well. I can't understand why they didn't fix the problem 5 years later.
A lot of misinformation in the video and bias to old model New one is much sportier and I agree on that part. Some may really dislike it, I personally love it. - New one is 10kg lighter than old one while having much heavier exhaust system (euro5 compliant). Saying that you can make old one the same weight is a bit of bs. Same can be done to the new one :) - 2021 is much more flickable with feeling similar to 600cc bike, something that old one really lacked - It is still possible to disable ABS both front and rear - The wobble and hard acceleration is typical for any hypernaked, BMW has this 'snake feeling' but I prefer this to shakiness of new 1200RS - It could be louder, but with euro5 and restrictive laws in EU countries I get why bmw did that. - it pops on dynamic pro like old model BMW feels a bit dull, but predictability makes it a great all-rounder and performer on the track.
Where's the misinformation and bias if I may ask? Nobody said the new one is heavier, "flickable" is a term unknown to me, not sure what's inaccurate with the wobble that's clearly there in the video, and the sound case is explained.
The News S1000R does only pop in dynamic
Thanks for sharing that information, guys!
I love the new R - really grown on me. I might try the 10mm risers though just to see how the bar position feels compared.
Yup, sometimes those slight changed can have significant overall effects.
You asked "who runs at 150 km/h on an S1000R" you serious??! I can do it in 1st gear only this is a high performance motorbike man.
Do you have alloy, forged or carbon wheels? Curious if there is a matter and factor with those.
Il keep my 2014 same exact frosted blue like the one in your video.much prettier headlight. New one is a disaster. Should have gone much more violent, no scooter type.
Should have stayed unsymmetrical too
i prefer the old front look
I second that!
Would the Speed triple Rs 2020 be a better road bike??
Track Bike maybe, road bike definitely not. Suspension is the biggest adv of BMW
What about bar risers?
Great video! Do you have any experience on the R1250R? Is there a huge difference in riding position?
I have the 2019 s1000r and drive regularly at 200......I have no issues, maybe because of my MRA sport bubble. I have also barend mirrors.
Right, if you steadily approach that number, it will all be great - the issue unveils itself when you accelerate really hard so that the front wheel becomes sort of "light". I wonder if mirrors could make a difference here but I doubt that.
@@VToldsMotoShow I guess that every small aero change can make a difference: Even the helmet and backpack.....
Thanks for this video. I now know I this bike isn’t for me.
I'm glad you found it helpful and yeah, it's definitely not a motorcycle for everyone.
I like the design change of new one but feels like it's lacking its soul. Boring perhaps?
For my opinion , the new models are friendlier (due to Euro 5?!?) than the previous one, faster on paper, quieter, safer due to electronics, but they are slowly losing their personality.
does not apply to all models but I think in most.
what do you think??
is the reason I stay in to my K13R
Cheers 🍺
Sounds to me like this machine could benefit from a steering damper….
It has one already.
@@matthewmaxwell-burton4549 yikes!
Well steep rake angles and shorter trail may lead to quick steering but it also compromises stability. The Yamaha MT09 also suffers from this at high speeds too. The sweet spot in bike set up and steering geometry, and chassis dimensions is an engineering art form. Sorry to hear that BMW didn’t quite get this one right….
It has a steering stabilizer from the factory. Everything about the bike is amazing accept this issue.
Very good points - everybody is totally right.
Not adjustable. The ohlins is fantastic.
Fajny test :)
You don't have to ease off the throttle just quick shift it. You Jerking the handlebar may cause that wobble
I'm jerking the handlebar in the same way when riding any motorcycle. So no, not a direct cause.
Isn't the whole exhaust welded together so you can't put a slip-on on?
Not sure but check this out - Akrapovic has a few slip-ons listed for the 2021 S 1000 R so I believe that it's totally fine. Even if it needed cutting, that's no big deal except for that you'd need to bring it in to some shop to do it for you: www.akrapovic.com/en/moto/product/20716/BMW/S-1000-R/2021/Slip-On-Line-Titanium?brandId=44&modelId=375&yearId=6379 I hope this helps.
No, it is not welded. It is the same as the 2019- RR

Pozdro!
Thanks for this Video! How tall are you?
Thank you! I am 183 cm tall or 6'0".
@@VToldsMotoShow Hello there. Thanks for the review. Love it! I wanna switch from my F900R to S1000R and I'm not sure what seat should I choose: the normal or the low seat. I'm 180 cm tall. Do you remember, did you reached ground with both legs? It seems to me that S1000R had the normal seat fitted on. BR.
A lot of misinformation in the video and bias to old model
New one is much sportier and I agree on that part. Some may really dislike it, I personally love it.
- New one is 10kg lighter than old one while having much heavier exhaust system (euro5 compliant). Saying that you can make old one the same weight is a bit of bs. Same can be done to the new one :)
- 2021 is much more flickable with feeling similar to 600cc bike, something that old one really lacked
- It is still possible to disable ABS both front and rear
- The wobble and hard acceleration is typical for any hypernaked, BMW has this 'snake feeling' but I prefer this to shakiness of new 1200RS
- It could be louder, but with euro5 and restrictive laws in EU countries I get why bmw did that.
- it pops on dynamic pro like old model
BMW feels a bit dull, but predictability makes it a great all-rounder and performer on the track.
Where's the misinformation and bias if I may ask? Nobody said the new one is heavier, "flickable" is a term unknown to me, not sure what's inaccurate with the wobble that's clearly there in the video, and the sound case is explained. If you can find how to switch ABS off on a 2021 S1000R, please do let us know.
@@VToldsMotoShow to disable abs just go to configuration of dynamic pro mode.
I pointed out already few claims of yours that indicate bias. Don't have time to review your video once again.
I'm not saying that anything is inaccurate with the wobble. Not sure how experienced you are, but such nervous frontend feeling during hard acceleration is basically domain of all hypernakeds (with somewhat exception of Streetfighter v4). Each represents it a bit differently. On track it is mostly unnoticeable
Your video was cool personal first impressions, but far from good review. Perhaps I should phrase my comment more carefully.
Keep up the work! It's so refreshing to see content from Poland :)
